Joshua 10
1 And it came to pass, when Adonizedec, king of Jerusalem, heard that Joshua had captured Ai, and devoted it to destruction, as he had done unto Jericho and her king, so, had he done unto Ai and her king, —and that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and had come into their midst,
Adoni Tsédek, roi de Jérusalem, apprit que Josué avait pris Aï et l'avait dévouée par interdit, comme il avait fait à Jéricho et à son roi, et que les habitants de Gabaon avaient fait la paix avec Israël et se trouvaient au milieu d'eux.
2 then feared they greatly, because Gibeon was, a great city, as one of the royal cities, —and because, it, was greater than Ai, and, all the men thereof, were mighty:
Il eut une grande crainte, parce que Gabaon était une grande ville, une des villes royales, parce qu'elle était plus grande qu'Aï, et que tous ses hommes étaient puissants.
3 therefore sent Adonizedec, king of Jerusalem, unto Hoham, king of Hebron, and unto Piram, king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia, king of Lachish, and unto Debir, king of Eglon, saying:
Alors Adoni-Zedek, roi de Jérusalem, envoya dire à Hoham, roi d'Hébron, à Piram, roi de Jarmuth, à Japhia, roi de Lakis, et à Debir, roi d'Églon:
4 Come up unto me and help me, that we may smite Gibeon, —for it hath made peace with Joshua, and with the sons of Israel.
« Montez vers moi et aidez-moi. Frappons Gabaon, car ils ont fait la paix avec Josué et avec les enfants d'Israël. »
5 So they gathered themselves together and came up, even the five kings of the Amorites—the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, —they, and all their hosts, —and encamped near Gibeon, and made war against it.
Alors les cinq rois des Amoréens, le roi de Jérusalem, le roi d'Hébron, le roi de Jarmuth, le roi de Lakis et le roi d'Églon, se rassemblèrent et montèrent, eux et toutes leurs armées, ils campèrent contre Gabaon et lui firent la guerre.
6 So the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua, unto the camp at Gilgal, saying, Do not withhold thy hand from thy servants, —Come up unto us quickly, and save us, and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the hill-country, are gathered together against us.
Les hommes de Gabaon envoyèrent dire à Josué, au camp de Guilgal: « N'abandonne pas tes serviteurs! Monte vite vers nous et sauve-nous! Aide-nous, car tous les rois des Amoréens qui habitent dans la montagne se sont rassemblés contre nous. »
7 So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, even all the mighty men of valour.
Et Josué monta de Guilgal, lui et toute l'armée avec lui, y compris tous les vaillants hommes.
8 And Yahweh said unto Joshua: Do not fear because of them, for, into thy hand, have I delivered them, —not a man of them shall stand before thee.
Yahvé dit à Josué: « Ne les crains pas, car je les ai livrés entre tes mains. Pas un seul d'entre eux ne tiendra devant toi. »
9 So then Joshua came in unto them, suddenly, —all the night, came he up, from Gilgal.
Josué vint donc à eux soudainement. Il marcha toute la nuit depuis Guilgal.
10 And Yahweh confused them before Israel, and smote them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, —and chased them along the way that goeth up Beth-horon, and smote them as far as Azekah and as far as Makkedah.
Yahvé les confondit devant Israël. Il leur fit subir une grande défaite à Gabaon, les poursuivit par le chemin de la montée de Beth Horon, et les battit jusqu'à Azéka et à Makkéda.
11 And it came to pass, when they fled from before Israel, they, being on the slope of Beth-horon, that, Yahweh, cast down upon them great stones out of the heavens, as far as Azekah, and they died, —more, were they who died by the hailstones, than they whom the sons of Israel slew with the sword.
Comme ils fuyaient devant Israël, alors qu'ils étaient à la descente de Beth Horon, Yahvé lança du ciel sur eux de grosses pierres jusqu'à Azéka, et ils moururent. Ceux qui moururent à cause des pierres de grêle furent plus nombreux que ceux que les enfants d'Israël tuèrent par l'épée.
12 Then, spake Joshua unto Yahweh, on the day when Yahweh delivered up the Amorites before the sons of Israel, —yea he said, in the presence of Israel—Thou Sun! in Gibeon, be still, and thou Moon! in the vale of Aijalon.
Et Josué parla à Yahvé, le jour où Yahvé livra les Amoréens aux enfants d'Israël. Il dit aux yeux d'Israël: « Soleil, arrête-toi sur Gibéon! Toi, lune, arrête-toi dans la vallée d'Aijalon! »
13 So the sun, was still, and, the moon, stayed, until a nation should be avenged on its foes. Is not, that, written in the Book of the Upright? So then the sun stayed in the middle of the heavens, and hastened not to go in, about a whole day.
Le soleil s'arrêta, et la lune resta immobile, jusqu'à ce que la nation se soit vengée de ses ennemis. N'est-ce pas écrit dans le livre de Jashar? Le soleil resta au milieu du ciel, et ne se pressa pas de se coucher, pendant tout un jour.
14 And there was no day like that—before it or after it, when Yahweh hearkened unto the voice of a man, —in that, Yahweh, himself fought for Israel.
Il n'y a pas eu de jour comme celui-là, ni avant ni après, où l'Éternel ait écouté la voix d'un homme, car l'Éternel a combattu pour Israël.
15 So Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp at Gilgal.
Josué retourna, et tout Israël avec lui, au camp, à Guilgal.
16 So these five kings fled, —and hid themselves in a cave, at Makkedah.
Ces cinq rois s'enfuirent, et se cachèrent dans la caverne de Makkéda.
17 And it was told Joshua, saying, —The five kings are found, hid in a cave at Makkedah.
On fit dire à Josué: « On a trouvé les cinq rois, cachés dans la caverne de Makkéda. »
18 And Joshua said, Roll ye great stones against the mouth of the cave, —and set over it men, to watch them;
Josué dit: « Faites rouler de grosses pierres pour couvrir l'entrée de la grotte, et placez des hommes à côté pour les garder;
19 but do not, ye, stay, chase after your enemies, so shall ye attack them in the rear, —do not suffer them to enter into their cities, for Yahweh your God hath delivered them into your hand.
mais ne restez pas là. Poursuivez vos ennemis et attaquez-les par derrière. Ne les laisse pas entrer dans leurs villes, car Yahvé ton Dieu les a livrés entre tes mains. »
20 And it came to pass, when Joshua and the sons of Israel had made an end of smiting them with a very great slaughter, until they were spent, then did, the remainder that were left of them, enter into the fortified cities.
Lorsque Josué et les enfants d'Israël eurent achevé de les tuer par un très grand carnage, jusqu'à ce qu'ils fussent consumés, et que ce qui restait d'eux fut entré dans les villes fortifiées,
21 And all the people returned unto the camp, unto Joshua at Makkedah, in peace, —none sharpened his tongue at any man of the sons of Israel.
tout le peuple retourna en paix au camp de Josué à Makkéda. Personne ne remua la langue contre aucun des enfants d'Israël.
22 Then said Joshua, Open ye the mouth of the cave, —and bring out unto me, these five kings, out of the cave.
Alors Josué dit: « Ouvrez l'entrée de la caverne, et amenez-moi ces cinq rois qui en sont sortis. »
23 And they did so, and brought out unto him, these five kings, out of the cave, —namely, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon.
Ils firent ainsi, et lui amenèrent ces cinq rois hors de la caverne: le roi de Jérusalem, le roi d'Hébron, le roi de Jarmuth, le roi de Lakis et le roi d'Églon.
24 And it came to pass, when they brought out these kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war who had been with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. So they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.
Lorsqu'ils eurent amené ces rois devant Josué, celui-ci appela tous les hommes d'Israël et dit aux chefs des hommes de guerre qui l'accompagnaient: « Approchez. Mettez vos pieds sur la nuque de ces rois. » Ils s'approchèrent, et mirent leurs pieds sur leur cou.
25 Then said Joshua unto them: Do not fear, nor be alarmed, —be firm and bold, for, thus and thus, will Yahweh do unto all your enemies, against whom ye do fight.
Josué leur dit: « N'ayez pas peur et ne vous effrayez pas. Soyez forts et courageux, car c'est ce que Yahvé fera à tous vos ennemis contre lesquels vous combattrez. »
26 And Joshua smote them after this, and put them to death, and hanged them upon five trees, —and they remained hung on the trees, until the evening,
Ensuite, Josué les frappa, les mit à mort et les pendit à cinq arbres. Ils restèrent suspendus aux arbres jusqu'au soir.
27 And it came to pass, at the time of the going in of the sun, that Joshua gave command, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave, where they had hid themselves, —and put great stones upon the mouth of the cave, [which remain], until this very day.
Au moment où le soleil se couchait, Josué donna l'ordre de les descendre des arbres, de les jeter dans la grotte où ils s'étaient cachés et de poser sur l'entrée de la grotte de grandes pierres qui subsistent encore aujourd'hui.
28 And Joshua captured, Makkedah, on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and, the king thereof, devoted he to destruction, them and all the souls that were therein, he left no survivor, —but did unto the king of Makkedah, as he had done unto the king of Jericho.
Ce jour-là, Josué prit Makkéda et la frappa du tranchant de l'épée, avec son roi. Il la détruisit entièrement, ainsi que tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient. Il ne laissa subsister personne. Il fit au roi de Makkéda ce qu'il avait fait au roi de Jéricho.
29 And Joshua passed over, and all Israel with him, from Makkedah unto Libnah, —and fought against Libnah;
Josué passa de Makkéda, et tout Israël avec lui, à Libna, et il combattit Libna.
30 and Yahweh delivered, it also, into the hand of Israel, with the king thereof, and he smote it with the edge of the sword, with all the souls that were therein, he left therein no survivor, —but did unto the king thereof, as he had done unto the king of Jericho.
Yahvé la livra aussi, avec son roi, entre les mains d'Israël. Il la frappa du tranchant de l'épée, ainsi que tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient. Il n'y laissa personne. Il fit à son roi ce qu'il avait fait au roi de Jéricho.
31 And Joshua passed over, and all Israel with him, from Libnah unto Lachish, —and encamped against it, and fought against it;
Josué passa de Libna, et tout Israël avec lui, à Lakis; il campa devant elle, et la combattit.
32 and Yahweh delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, and he captured it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, with all the souls that were therein, —according to all that he had done unto Libnah.
Yahvé livra Lakis entre les mains d'Israël. Il la prit le second jour, et la frappa du tranchant de l'épée, avec tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient, selon tout ce qu'il avait fait à Libna.
33 Then, came up Horam, king of Gezer, to help Lachish, —and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had not left him a survivor.
Alors Horam, roi de Guézer, monta au secours de Lakis; et Josué le frappa, lui et son peuple, jusqu'à ce qu'il ne lui restât plus personne.
34 And Joshua passed over, and all Israel with him, from Lachish unto Eglon, —and they encamped against it, and fought against it;
Josué passa de Lakis, et tout Israël avec lui, à Églon; ils campèrent devant elle et la combattirent.
35 and captured it on the same day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and, all the souls that were therein, on that day, devoted he to destruction, —according to all that he had done to Lachish.
Ils la prirent ce jour-là, et la frappèrent du tranchant de l'épée. Il dévora par interdit tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient ce jour-là, selon tout ce qu'il avait fait à Lakis.
36 And Joshua went up, and all Israel with him, from Eglon unto Hebron, —and they fought against it;
Josué monta d'Églon, et tout Israël avec lui, à Hébron, et ils combattirent contre elle.
37 and captured it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, with all the souls that were therein—he left not a survivor, according to all that he had done to Eglon, —he devoted it to destruction, and all the souls that were therein.
Ils la prirent et la frappèrent du tranchant de l'épée, avec son roi, toutes ses villes et tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient. Il ne laissa rien subsister, selon tout ce qu'il avait fait à Églon, et il la détruisit par interdit, ainsi que tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient.
38 Then Joshua turned back, and all Israel with him, unto Debir, —and fought against it;
Josué retourna, et tout Israël avec lui, à Debir, et il l'attaqua.
39 and captured it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and smote them with the edge of the sword, and devoted to destruction every soul that was therein, he left not a survivor, —as he had done unto Hebron, so, did he unto Debir, and unto the king thereof, as also he had done unto Libnah, and unto her king.
Il la prit, avec son roi et toutes ses villes. Ils les frappèrent du tranchant de l'épée et dévouèrent par interdit tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient. Il ne laissa personne en vie. Ce qu'il avait fait à Hébron, il le fit à Debir et à son roi, et à Libna et à son roi.
40 So Joshua smote all the land—the hill country, and the south, and the lowland, and the slopes, and all their kings, he left not a survivor, —but, every breathing thing, devoted he to destruction, as Yahweh, God of Israel, had commanded.
Josué frappa tout le pays, la montagne, le midi, la plaine, les coteaux, et tous leurs rois. Il ne laissa subsister personne, mais il dévora tout ce qui respirait, comme l'avait ordonné Yahvé, le Dieu d'Israël.
41 Yea Joshua smote them, from Kadesh-barnea, even as far as Gaza, —and all the land of Goshen, even as far as Gibeon.
Josué les battit depuis Kadesh Barnea jusqu'à Gaza, et tout le pays de Gosen jusqu'à Gabaon.
42 Yea, all these kings and their land, did Joshua capture at one time, —because, Yahweh, God of Israel, fought for Israel.
Josué prit tous ces rois et leur pays en une seule fois, car l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël, combattait pour Israël.
43 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp at Gilgal.
Josué retourna, et tout Israël avec lui, au camp, à Guilgal.
