Joshua 10
1 And it came to pass, when Adonizedec, king of Jerusalem, heard that Joshua had captured Ai, and devoted it to destruction, as he had done unto Jericho and her king, so, had he done unto Ai and her king, —and that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and had come into their midst,
এদিকে জেরুশালেমের রাজা অদোনী-ষেদক শুনতে পেলেন যে যিহোশূয় অয় দখল করে তা সম্পূর্ণরূপে ধ্বংস করে ফেলেছেন, যিরীহো ও সেখানকার রাজার প্রতি তিনি যেমন করেছিলেন, অয় ও সেখানকার রাজার প্রতিও সেরকমই করেছেন, এবং গিবিয়োন-নিবাসীরা ইস্রায়েলের সঙ্গে এক মৈত্রীচুক্তি করেছে ও তাদের মিত্রশক্তি হয়ে উঠেছে।
2 then feared they greatly, because Gibeon was, a great city, as one of the royal cities, —and because, it, was greater than Ai, and, all the men thereof, were mighty:
রাজা ও তাঁর প্রজারা এতে ভীষণ উদ্ভ্রান্ত হয়ে গেলেন, কারণ যে কোনো রাজকীয় নগরের মতো গিবিয়োনও ছিল গুরুত্বপূর্ণ এক নগর; সেটি আকারে অয়ের থেকেও বড়ো ছিল এবং সেখানকার সব লোকজন ছিল ভালো যোদ্ধা।
3 therefore sent Adonizedec, king of Jerusalem, unto Hoham, king of Hebron, and unto Piram, king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia, king of Lachish, and unto Debir, king of Eglon, saying:
তাই জেরুশালেমের রাজা অদোনী-ষেদক হিব্রোণের রাজা হোহমের, যর্মূতের রাজা পিরামের, লাখীশের রাজা যাফিয়ের ও ইগ্লোনের রাজা দবীরের কাছে আবেদন জানালেন।
4 Come up unto me and help me, that we may smite Gibeon, —for it hath made peace with Joshua, and with the sons of Israel.
“আপনারা আমার কাছে আসুন এবং গিবিয়োন আক্রমণ করার জন্য আমাকে সাহায্য করুন,” তিনি বললেন, “কারণ তারা যিহোশূয় ও ইস্রায়েলের সঙ্গে সন্ধি করেছে।”
5 So they gathered themselves together and came up, even the five kings of the Amorites—the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, —they, and all their hosts, —and encamped near Gibeon, and made war against it.
তখন ইমোরীয়দের এই পাঁচজন রাজা—জেরুশালেমের, হিব্রোণের, যর্মূতের, লাখীশের ও ইগ্লোনের রাজা—তাঁদের সৈন্যদল সমবেত করলেন। তাঁদের সমগ্র সৈন্যদল নিয়ে তাঁরা এগিয়ে গেলেন ও গিবিয়োনের বিরুদ্ধে অবস্থান নিয়ে সেটি আক্রমণ করলেন।
6 So the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua, unto the camp at Gilgal, saying, Do not withhold thy hand from thy servants, —Come up unto us quickly, and save us, and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the hill-country, are gathered together against us.
গিবিয়োনীয়েরা তখন গিল্গলের শিবিরে যিহোশূয়ের কাছে খবর পাঠাল: “আপনার দাসদের ছেড়ে যাবেন না। তাড়াতাড়ি আমাদের কাছে আসুন ও আমাদের রক্ষা করুন! আমাদের সাহায্য করুন, কারণ পার্বত্য প্রদেশের ইমোরীয় রাজারা সবাই আমাদের বিরুদ্ধে জোট বেঁধেছেন।”
7 So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, even all the mighty men of valour.
অতএব যিহোশূয় তাঁর সমগ্র সৈন্যদল ও সেরা যোদ্ধাদের সবাইকে সাথে নিয়ে গিল্গল থেকে কুচকাওয়াজ করে এগিয়ে গেলেন।
8 And Yahweh said unto Joshua: Do not fear because of them, for, into thy hand, have I delivered them, —not a man of them shall stand before thee.
সদাপ্রভু যিহোশূয়কে বললেন, “ওদের ভয় পেয়ো না; ওদের আমি তোমার হাতে সমর্পণ করেছি। ওদের কেউই তোমার সামনে দাঁড়াতে পারবে না।”
9 So then Joshua came in unto them, suddenly, —all the night, came he up, from Gilgal.
গিল্গল থেকে বেরিয়ে সারারাত কুচকাওয়াজ করে এগিয়ে যাওয়ার পর, যিহোশূয় হঠাৎ তাঁদের সামনে উপস্থিত হয়ে তাঁদের চমকে দিলেন।
10 And Yahweh confused them before Israel, and smote them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, —and chased them along the way that goeth up Beth-horon, and smote them as far as Azekah and as far as Makkedah.
ইস্রায়েলের সামনে সদাপ্রভু তাদের বিহ্বল করে তুললেন, তাই যিহোশূয় ও ইস্রায়েলীরা গিবিয়োনে তাদের সম্পূর্ণরূপে পরাজিত করলেন। বেথ-হোরোণ পর্যন্ত উঠে যাওয়া পথটি ধরে ইস্রায়েল তাদের পশ্চাদ্ধাবন করল এবং অসেকা ও মক্কেদা পর্যন্ত এগিয়ে গিয়ে তাদের হত্যা করল।
11 And it came to pass, when they fled from before Israel, they, being on the slope of Beth-horon, that, Yahweh, cast down upon them great stones out of the heavens, as far as Azekah, and they died, —more, were they who died by the hailstones, than they whom the sons of Israel slew with the sword.
তারা যখন বেথ-হোরোণ থেকে অসেকা পর্যন্ত বিস্তৃত পথে নামতে নামতে ইস্রায়েলের কাছ থেকে পালিয়ে যাচ্ছিল, তখন সদাপ্রভু তাদের উপরে বড়ো বড়ো শিলা বর্ষণ করলেন এবং ইস্রায়েলীদের তরোয়ালের আঘাতে যতজন না নিহত হল, তার থেকেও বেশি সংখ্যক লোক শিলাবৃষ্টিতে নিহত হল।
12 Then, spake Joshua unto Yahweh, on the day when Yahweh delivered up the Amorites before the sons of Israel, —yea he said, in the presence of Israel—Thou Sun! in Gibeon, be still, and thou Moon! in the vale of Aijalon.
যেদিন সদাপ্রভু ইমোরীয়দের ইস্রায়েলের হাতে সমর্পণ করলেন, যিহোশূয় সমস্ত ইস্রায়েলের সামনে সদাপ্রভুর কাছে প্রার্থনা করলেন। তিনি বললেন: “সূর্য, তুমি গিবিয়োনে স্থির হয়ে দাঁড়াও, আর চাঁদ, তুমি দাঁড়াও অয়ালোন উপত্যকায়।”
13 So the sun, was still, and, the moon, stayed, until a nation should be avenged on its foes. Is not, that, written in the Book of the Upright? So then the sun stayed in the middle of the heavens, and hastened not to go in, about a whole day.
তাই সূর্য স্থির হয়ে দাঁড়াল, চাঁদও থেমে রইল, যতক্ষণ না সেই জাতি তার শত্রুদের উপর প্রতিশোধ নিল, যেমনটি যাশেরের পুস্তকে লেখা আছে। সূর্য মধ্যাকাশে থেমে রইল ও অস্ত যেতে প্রায় সম্পূর্ণ একদিন দেরি করল।
14 And there was no day like that—before it or after it, when Yahweh hearkened unto the voice of a man, —in that, Yahweh, himself fought for Israel.
এর আগে বা এযাবৎ আর কখনও এমন কোনও দিন হয়নি, যেদিন সদাপ্রভু কোনো মানুষের কথা এভাবে শুনেছেন। নিঃসন্দেহে সদাপ্রভু ইস্রায়েলের হয়ে যুদ্ধ করছিলেন!
15 So Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp at Gilgal.
পরে যিহোশূয় সমগ্র ইস্রায়েলকে সঙ্গে নিয়ে গিল্গলের শিবিরে ফিরে এলেন।
16 So these five kings fled, —and hid themselves in a cave, at Makkedah.
এদিকে সেই পাঁচজন রাজা পালিয়ে গিয়ে মক্কেদায় একটি গুহাতে লুকিয়েছিলেন।
17 And it was told Joshua, saying, —The five kings are found, hid in a cave at Makkedah.
যিহোশূয়কে যখন বলা হল যে সেই পাঁচজন রাজাকে মক্কেদায় একটি গুহাতে লুকিয়ে থাকতে দেখা গিয়েছে,
18 And Joshua said, Roll ye great stones against the mouth of the cave, —and set over it men, to watch them;
তখন তিনি বললেন, “সেই গুহাটির মুখে বড়ো বড়ো পাষাণ-পাথর গড়িয়ে দাও ও সেটি পাহারা দেওয়ার জন্য কয়েকজন লোক মোতায়েন করে দাও।
19 but do not, ye, stay, chase after your enemies, so shall ye attack them in the rear, —do not suffer them to enter into their cities, for Yahweh your God hath delivered them into your hand.
কিন্তু তোমরা থেমে থেকো না; তোমাদের শত্রুদের পশ্চাদ্ধাবন করে যাও! পিছন দিক থেকে তাদের আক্রমণ করো ও তাদের নিজেদের নগরগুলিতে পৌঁছাতে দিয়ো না, কারণ তোমাদের ঈশ্বর সদাপ্রভু তাদের তোমাদের হাতে সমর্পণ করে দিয়েছেন।”
20 And it came to pass, when Joshua and the sons of Israel had made an end of smiting them with a very great slaughter, until they were spent, then did, the remainder that were left of them, enter into the fortified cities.
অতএব যিহোশূয় ও ইস্রায়েলীরা সম্পূর্ণরূপে তাদের পরাজিত করলেন, কিন্তু প্রাণে বাঁচা কয়েকজন লোক তাদের প্রাচীরবেষ্টিত নগরগুলিতে পৌঁছে যেতে পারল।
21 And all the people returned unto the camp, unto Joshua at Makkedah, in peace, —none sharpened his tongue at any man of the sons of Israel.
সমগ্র সৈন্যদল নিরাপদে মক্কেদার শিবিরে যিহোশূয়ের কাছে ফিরে এল, এবং কেউই ইস্রায়েলীদের বিরুদ্ধে একটি শব্দও উচ্চারণ করতে পারল না।
22 Then said Joshua, Open ye the mouth of the cave, —and bring out unto me, these five kings, out of the cave.
যিহোশূয় বললেন, “গুহার মুখটি খোলো এবং সেই পাঁচজন রাজাকে আমার কাছে নিয়ে এসো।”
23 And they did so, and brought out unto him, these five kings, out of the cave, —namely, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon.
অতএব তারা সেই পাঁচজন রাজাকে—জেরুশালেমের, হিব্রোণের, যর্মূতের, লাখীশের ও ইগ্লোনের রাজাকে গুহা থেকে বের করে আনল।
24 And it came to pass, when they brought out these kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war who had been with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. So they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.
তারা যখন এসব রাজাকে যিহোশূয়ের কাছে আনল, তখন তিনি ইস্রায়েলের সব লোকজনকে ডেকে পাঠালেন এবং তাঁর সঙ্গে আসা সৈন্যদলের সেনাপতিদের বললেন, “তোমরা এখানে এসো ও এই রাজাদের ঘাড়ে নিজেদের পা রাখো।” তাই তাঁরা এগিয়ে এলেন ও সেই রাজাদের ঘাড়ে নিজেদের পা রাখলেন।
25 Then said Joshua unto them: Do not fear, nor be alarmed, —be firm and bold, for, thus and thus, will Yahweh do unto all your enemies, against whom ye do fight.
যিহোশূয় তাদের বললেন, “তোমরা ভয় পেয়ো না; নিরাশও হোয়ো না। তোমরা বলবান ও সাহসী হও। তোমরা যেসব শত্রুর সঙ্গে যুদ্ধ করতে যাচ্ছ, সদাপ্রভু তাদের সবারই প্রতি এরকম করবেন।”
26 And Joshua smote them after this, and put them to death, and hanged them upon five trees, —and they remained hung on the trees, until the evening,
পরে যিহোশূয় সেই রাজাদের হত্যা করলেন ও পাঁচটি শূলে তাঁদের মৃতদেহ টাঙিয়ে দিলেন, এবং সন্ধ্যা পর্যন্ত তাঁদের মৃতদেহ ওই শূলগুলিতে ঝুলে রইল।
27 And it came to pass, at the time of the going in of the sun, that Joshua gave command, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave, where they had hid themselves, —and put great stones upon the mouth of the cave, [which remain], until this very day.
সূর্যাস্তের সময় যিহোশূয় আদেশ দিলেন ও তারা ওই রাজাদের মৃতদেহ শূল থেকে নামাল এবং তাঁরা যেখানে লুকিয়েছিলেন, সেই গুহায় তাঁদের শবগুলি ছুঁড়ে ফেলে দিল। গুহার মুখে তারা বড়ো বড়ো পাষাণ-পাথর রেখে দিল, যা আজও পর্যন্ত সেখানে রাখা আছে।
28 And Joshua captured, Makkedah, on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and, the king thereof, devoted he to destruction, them and all the souls that were therein, he left no survivor, —but did unto the king of Makkedah, as he had done unto the king of Jericho.
সেদিন যিহোশূয় মক্কেদা দখল করলেন। তিনি সেই নগরের ও সেখানকার রাজার উপর তরোয়াল চালালেন ও সেটির মধ্যে বসবাসকারী প্রত্যেককে সম্পূর্ণরূপে ধ্বংস করলেন। তিনি কাউকেই প্রাণে বাঁচতে দিলেন না। আর যিরীহোর রাজার প্রতি তিনি যেমন করেছিলেন, মক্কেদার রাজার প্রতিও তিনি তেমনই করলেন।
29 And Joshua passed over, and all Israel with him, from Makkedah unto Libnah, —and fought against Libnah;
পরে যিহোশূয় ও সমগ্র ইস্রায়েল মক্কেদা থেকে লিব্নার দিকে এগিয়ে গেলেন ও তা আক্রমণ করলেন।
30 and Yahweh delivered, it also, into the hand of Israel, with the king thereof, and he smote it with the edge of the sword, with all the souls that were therein, he left therein no survivor, —but did unto the king thereof, as he had done unto the king of Jericho.
সদাপ্রভু সেই নগরটি ও তার রাজাকেও ইস্রায়েলের হাতে সমর্পণ করলেন। সেই নগরের ও সেখানে বসবাসকারী প্রত্যেকের উপর যিহোশূয় তরোয়াল চালালেন। সেখানে কাউকে তিনি প্রাণে বাঁচতে দিলেন না। আর যিরীহোর রাজার প্রতি তিনি যেমন করেছিলেন, এখানকার রাজার প্রতিও তিনি তেমনই করলেন।
31 And Joshua passed over, and all Israel with him, from Libnah unto Lachish, —and encamped against it, and fought against it;
পরে যিহোশূয় ও তাঁর সঙ্গে থাকা সমগ্র ইস্রায়েল লিব্না থেকে লাখীশের দিকে এগিয়ে গেলেন; তিনি সেই নগরের বিরুদ্ধে অবস্থান নিলেন ও তা আক্রমণ করলেন।
32 and Yahweh delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, and he captured it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, with all the souls that were therein, —according to all that he had done unto Libnah.
সদাপ্রভু ইস্রায়েলের হাতে লাখীশ সমর্পণ করলেন, এবং দ্বিতীয় দিনে যিহোশূয় তা দখল করলেন। সেই নগরের ও সেখানে বসবাসকারী প্রত্যেকের উপরে তিনি তরোয়াল চালালেন, ঠিক যেমনটি তিনি লিব্নার প্রতি করেছিলেন।
33 Then, came up Horam, king of Gezer, to help Lachish, —and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had not left him a survivor.
ইতিমধ্যে, গেষরের রাজা হোরম লাখীশকে সাহায্য করতে এলেন, কিন্তু যিহোশূয় তাঁকে ও তাঁর সৈন্যদলকেও পরাজিত করলেন—কাউকে প্রাণে বাঁচতে দিলেন না।
34 And Joshua passed over, and all Israel with him, from Lachish unto Eglon, —and they encamped against it, and fought against it;
পরে যিহোশূয় ও তাঁর সঙ্গে থাকা সমগ্র ইস্রায়েল লাখীশ থেকে ইগ্লোনের দিকে এগিয়ে গেলেন; তাঁরা নগরের বিরুদ্ধে অবস্থান নিলেন ও তা আক্রমণ করলেন।
35 and captured it on the same day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and, all the souls that were therein, on that day, devoted he to destruction, —according to all that he had done to Lachish.
সেদিনই তাঁরা তা দখল করে নিলেন এবং সেটির উপরে তরোয়াল চালিয়ে সেখানে বসবাসকারী প্রত্যেককে সম্পূর্ণরূপে ধ্বংস করলেন, ঠিক যেমনটি তাঁরা লাখীশের প্রতি করেছিলেন।
36 And Joshua went up, and all Israel with him, from Eglon unto Hebron, —and they fought against it;
পরে যিহোশূয় ও তাঁর সঙ্গে থাকা সমগ্র ইস্রায়েল ইগ্লোন থেকে হিব্রোণের দিকে এগিয়ে গিয়ে তা আক্রমণ করলেন।
37 and captured it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, with all the souls that were therein—he left not a survivor, according to all that he had done to Eglon, —he devoted it to destruction, and all the souls that were therein.
তাঁরা নগরটি দখল করলেন এবং সেটির উপরে ও সেখানকার রাজার, সেখানকার গ্রামগুলির এবং সেখানে বসবাসকারী প্রত্যেকের উপরে তরোয়াল চালিয়ে দিলেন। কাউকেই তাঁরা প্রাণে বাঁচতে দিলেন না। ইগ্লোনের প্রতি যেমন করেছিলেন, সেভাবে সেই নগর ও সেখানে বসবাসকারী প্রত্যেককে তাঁরা সম্পূর্ণরূপে ধ্বংস করলেন।
38 Then Joshua turned back, and all Israel with him, unto Debir, —and fought against it;
পরে যিহোশূয় ও তাঁর সঙ্গে থাকা সমগ্র ইস্রায়েল পিছনে ফিরে দবীর আক্রমণ করলেন।
39 and captured it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and smote them with the edge of the sword, and devoted to destruction every soul that was therein, he left not a survivor, —as he had done unto Hebron, so, did he unto Debir, and unto the king thereof, as also he had done unto Libnah, and unto her king.
তাঁরা নগরটির রাজা ও গ্রামগুলি সমেত সেটি দখল করে নিলেন এবং তাদের উপরে তরোয়াল চালিয়ে দিলেন। সেখানে বসবাসকারী প্রত্যেককে তাঁরা সম্পূর্ণরূপে ধ্বংস করলেন। কাউকেই তাঁরা প্রাণে বাঁচতে দিলেন না। লিব্না ও সেখানকার রাজার এবং হিব্রোণের প্রতি তাঁরা যেমন করেছিলেন, দবীর ও সেখানকার রাজার প্রতিও তাঁরা তেমনই করলেন।
40 So Joshua smote all the land—the hill country, and the south, and the lowland, and the slopes, and all their kings, he left not a survivor, —but, every breathing thing, devoted he to destruction, as Yahweh, God of Israel, had commanded.
অতএব যিহোশূয় পার্বত্য প্রদেশ, নেগেভ, পশ্চিমী পাহাড়ের পাদদেশ ও পর্বতের ঢাল সমেত সমগ্র অঞ্চলটি, এবং তাদের সব রাজাকে পদানত করলেন। তাদের কাউকেই তিনি প্রাণে বাঁচতে দিলেন না। শ্বাসবিশিষ্ট সকলকেই তিনি সম্পূর্ণরূপে ধ্বংস করলেন, ঠিক যেমনটি ইস্রায়েলের ঈশ্বর সদাপ্রভু আদেশ দিয়েছিলেন।
41 Yea Joshua smote them, from Kadesh-barnea, even as far as Gaza, —and all the land of Goshen, even as far as Gibeon.
কাদেশ-বর্ণেয় থেকে গাজা পর্যন্ত এবং গোশনের সমগ্র অঞ্চল থেকে গিবিয়োন পর্যন্ত, যিহোশূয় তাদের পদানত করলেন।
42 Yea, all these kings and their land, did Joshua capture at one time, —because, Yahweh, God of Israel, fought for Israel.
একই সামরিক অভিযানে যিহোশূয় এসব রাজা ও তাঁদের দেশগুলির উপর জয়লাভ করলেন, কারণ ইস্রায়েলের ঈশ্বর সদাপ্রভু ইস্রায়েলের হয়ে যুদ্ধ করছিলেন।
43 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp at Gilgal.
পরে যিহোশূয় সমগ্র ইস্রায়েলকে সঙ্গে নিয়ে গিল্গলের শিবিরে ফিরে এলেন।
