Jonah 3
1 Then came the word of Yahweh unto Jonah, the second time, saying:
La parole de Yahvé fut adressée à Jonas pour la seconde fois, en ces termes:
2 Arise, get thee unto Nineveh, the great city, —and cry against it the cry that I am bidding thee.
« Lève-toi, va à Ninive, la grande ville, et prêche-lui le message que je te donne. »
3 So Jonah arose, and went his way unto Nineveh, according to the word of Yahweh, —Nineveh, being a city great before God, of three days’ journey.
Et Jonas se leva, et alla à Ninive, selon la parole de l'Éternel. Or Ninive était une ville extrêmement grande, à trois jours de marche.
4 So Jonah began to enter into the city, one day’s journey, —and he cried out and said—Yet forty days, and, Nineveh, is to be overthrown!
Jonas commença à entrer dans la ville à une journée de marche, et il s'écria: « Dans quarante jours, Ninive sera renversée! »
5 And the people of Nineveh believed in God, —and proclaimed a fast, and clothed themselves in sackcloth, from the greatest of them, even unto the least of them.
Les habitants de Ninive crurent en Dieu, proclamèrent un jeûne et se couvrirent de sacs, depuis le plus grand jusqu'au plus petit.
6 And the word reached unto the king of Nineveh, so he arose from his throne, and laid aside his robe from off him, —and covered him with sackcloth, and sat on ashes.
La nouvelle parvint au roi de Ninive, qui se leva de son trône, ôta sa robe royale, se couvrit d'un sac et s'assit dans la cendre.
7 And he caused an outcry to be made—and said—throughout Nineveh, By decree of the king and of his great men, Be it known: —Man and beast, herd and flock, Let them taste, nothing, let them not feed, and, water, let them not drink:
Il fit une proclamation et la publia dans Ninive par l'ordre du roi et de ses nobles, en disant: « Que ni les hommes ni les bêtes, ni le bétail ni le cheptel, ne goûtent rien; qu'ils ne se nourrissent pas et ne boivent pas d'eau;
8 Let both man and beast, cover themselves with sackcloth, and let them cry unto God, mightily, —Yea let them turn, every man from his wicked way, and from the violence which is in their hands:
mais qu'ils se couvrent d'un sac, hommes et bêtes, et qu'ils crient puissamment à Dieu. Oui, qu'ils détournent chacun de sa mauvaise voie et de la violence qui est dans ses mains.
9 Who knoweth whether God himself—may turn and grieve, —and turn away from the glow of his anger, that we perish not?
Qui sait si Dieu ne reviendra pas et ne s'apaisera pas, s'il ne détournera pas son ardente colère, afin que nous ne périssions pas? ».
10 And God saw their doings, that they turned from their wicked way, —and God was grieved over the calamity which he had spoken of executing upon them, and executed it not.
Dieu a vu leurs œuvres, et ils se sont détournés de leur mauvaise voie. Dieu a renoncé au désastre qu'il avait dit qu'il leur ferait subir, et il ne l'a pas fait.
