1 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister.
anantara. m mariyam tasyaa bhaginii marthaa ca yasmin vaithaniiyaagraame vasatastasmin graame iliyaasar naamaa pii. dita eka aasiit|
2 And Mary was she who anointed the Lord with perfume, and wiped his feet with her hair—whose brother Lazarus was sick.
yaa mariyam prabhu. m sugandhitelaina marddayitvaa svake"saistasya cara. nau samamaarjat tasyaa bhraataa sa iliyaasar rogii|
3 The sisters, therefore, sent out unto him, saying—Lord, see! he whom thou tenderly lovest, is sick.
apara nca he prabho bhavaan yasmin priiyate sa eva pii. ditostiiti kathaa. m kathayitvaa tasya bhaginyau pre. sitavatyau|
4 But Jesus hearing, said—This sickness, is not unto death, but for the glory of God, —that the Son of God may be glorified thereby.
tadaa yii"surimaa. m vaarttaa. m "srutvaakathayata pii. deya. m mara. naartha. m na kintvii"svarasya mahimaartham ii"svaraputrasya mahimaprakaa"saartha nca jaataa|
5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
yii"su ryadyapimarthaayaa. m tadbhaginyaam iliyaasari caapriiyata,
6 When, therefore, he heard that he was sick, then, indeed, he abode in the place where he was, two days.
tathaapi iliyaasara. h pii. daayaa. h katha. m "srutvaa yatra aasiit tatraiva dinadvayamati. s.that|
7 Then, after this, he saith unto the disciples—Let us be leading on into Judaea, again.
tata. h param sa "si. syaanakathayad vaya. m puna ryihuudiiyaprade"sa. m yaama. h|
8 The disciples say unto him—Rabbi! just now, were the Jews seeking to stone thee—and, again, goest thou thither?
tataste pratyavadan, he guro svalpadinaani gataani yihuudiiyaastvaa. m paa. saa. nai rhantum udyataastathaapi ki. m punastatra yaasyasi?
9 Jesus answered—Are there not, twelve hours, in the day? If one walk in the day, he doth no stumble, because, the light of this world, he seeth;
yii"su. h pratyavadat, ekasmin dine ki. m dvaada"sagha. tikaa na bhavanti? kopi divaa gacchan na skhalati yata. h sa etajjagato diipti. m praapnoti|
10 But, if one walk in the night, he stumbleth, because, the light, is not in him.
kintu raatrau gacchan skhalati yato hetostatra diipti rnaasti|
11 These things, he said, and, after this, he saith unto them—Lazarus, our dear friend, hath fallen asleep; but I am going, that I may awake him.

12 The disciples, therefore, said unto him—Lord! if he have fallen asleep, he will recover.
yii"su rm. rtau kathaamimaa. m kathitavaan kintu vi"sraamaartha. m nidraayaa. m kathitavaan iti j naatvaa "si. syaa akathayan,
13 But Jesus had spoken concerning his death; whereas, they, supposed that, concerning the taking of rest in sleep, he had been speaking.
he guro sa yadi nidraati tarhi bhadrameva|
14 Jesus, therefore, then, said unto them, plainly, —Lazarus, died;
tadaa yii"su. h spa. s.ta. m taan vyaaharat, iliyaasar amriyata;
15 and I rejoice, for your sake—that ye may believe, —that I was not there; but let us be going unto him.
kintu yuuya. m yathaa pratiitha tadarthamaha. m tatra na sthitavaan ityasmaad yu. smannimittam aahlaaditoha. m, tathaapi tasya samiipe yaama|
16 Thomas, therefore, the one called Didymus, said unto his fellow-disciples—Let, us also, be going, that we may die with him.
tadaa thomaa ya. m diduma. m vadanti sa sa"ngina. h "si. syaan avadad vayamapi gatvaa tena saarddha. m mriyaamahai|
17 Jesus, therefore, coming, found that, four days already, had he been in the tomb.
yii"sustatropasthaaya iliyaasara. h "sma"saane sthaapanaat catvaari dinaani gataaniiti vaarttaa. m "srutavaan|
18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off;
vaithaniiyaa yiruu"saalama. h samiipasthaa kro"saikamaatraantaritaa;
19 and, many from among the Jews, had come unto Martha and Mary, that they might console them concerning their brother.
tasmaad bahavo yihuudiiyaa marthaa. m mariyama nca bhyaat. r"sokaapannaa. m saantvayitu. m tayo. h samiipam aagacchan|
20 Martha, therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet him; but, Mary, in the house, remained sitting.
marthaa yii"soraagamanavaartaa. m "srutvaiva ta. m saak. saad akarot kintu mariyam geha upavi"sya sthitaa|
21 Martha, therefore, said unto Jesus—Lord! if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;
tadaa marthaa yii"sumavaadat, he prabho yadi bhavaan atraasthaasyat tarhi mama bhraataa naamari. syat|
22 And, now, I know, that, whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God, will give unto thee.
kintvidaaniimapi yad ii"svare praarthayi. syate ii"svarastad daasyatiiti jaane. aha. m|
23 Jesus saith unto her—Thy brother shall rise.
yii"suravaadiit tava bhraataa samutthaasyati|
24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise, in the resurrection, in the last day.
marthaa vyaaharat "se. sadivase sa utthaanasamaye protthaasyatiiti jaane. aha. m|
25 Jesus said unto her—I, am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth on me, even though he die, shall live again!
tadaa yii"su. h kathitavaan ahameva utthaapayitaa jiivayitaa ca ya. h ka"scana mayi vi"svasiti sa m. rtvaapi jiivi. syati;
26 And, no one who liveth again and believeth on me, shall in anywise die, unto times age-abiding. Believest thou this? (aiōn g165)
ya. h ka"scana ca jiivan mayi vi"svasiti sa kadaapi na mari. syati, asyaa. m kathaayaa. m ki. m vi"svasi. si? (aiōn g165)
27 She saith unto him—Yea, Lord! I, have believed, that, thou, art the Christ, the Son of God, —He who, into the world, should come.
saavadat prabho yasyaavatara. naapek. saasti bhavaan saevaabhi. siktta ii"svaraputra iti vi"svasimi|
28 And this saying, she went away, and called Mary her sister, secretly, saying—The teacher, is present, and calleth thee.
iti kathaa. m kathayitvaa saa gatvaa svaa. m bhaginii. m mariyama. m guptamaahuuya vyaaharat gururupati. s.thati tvaamaahuuyati ca|
29 And, she, when she heard, was roused up quickly, and was coming unto him.
kathaamimaa. m "srutvaa saa tuur. nam utthaaya tasya samiipam agacchat|
30 Not yet, however, had Jesus come into the village, but was still in the place where, Martha, met him.
yii"su rgraamamadhya. m na pravi"sya yatra marthaa ta. m saak. saad akarot tatra sthitavaan|
31 The Jews, therefore, who were with her in the house and consoling her, seeing Mary, that quickly she arose and went out, followed her, supposing that she was withdrawing unto the tomb, that she might weep there.
ye yihuudiiyaa mariyamaa saaka. m g. rhe ti. s.thantastaam asaantvayana te taa. m k. sipram utthaaya gacchanti. m vilokya vyaaharan, sa "sma"saane roditu. m yaati, ityuktvaa te tasyaa. h pa"scaad agacchan|
32 Mary, therefore, when she came where Jesus was, seeing him, fell at his feet, saying unto him—Lord! if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
yatra yii"surati. s.that tatra mariyam upasthaaya ta. m d. r.s. tvaa tasya cara. nayo. h patitvaa vyaaharat he prabho yadi bhavaan atraasthaasyat tarhi mama bhraataa naamari. syat|
33 Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, was indignant in the spirit, and troubled himself,
yii"sustaa. m tasyaa. h sa"ngino yihuudiiyaa. m"sca rudato vilokya "sokaartta. h san diirgha. m ni"svasya kathitavaan ta. m kutraasthaapayata?
34 and said—Where have ye laid him? They say unto him—Lord! come and see.
te vyaaharan, he prabho bhavaan aagatya pa"syatu|
35 Jesus wept.
yii"sunaa krandita. m|
36 The Jews, therefore, were saying—See! how tenderly he loved him!
ataeva yihuudiiyaa avadan, pa"syataaya. m tasmin kid. rg apriyata|
37 But, some from among them, said—Could not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that, this one also, should not have died?
te. saa. m kecid avadan yondhaaya cak. su. sii dattavaan sa kim asya m. rtyu. m nivaarayitu. m naa"saknot?
38 Jesus, therefore, again, being indignant within himself, cometh unto the tomb. Now it was a cave, and, a stone, was lying thereon.
tato yii"su. h punarantardiirgha. m ni"svasya "sma"saanaantikam agacchat| tat "sma"saanam eka. m gahvara. m tanmukhe paa. saa. na eka aasiit|
39 Jesus, saith, Take ye away the stone! Martha, the sister of the deceased, saith unto him—Lord! by this time, he stinketh, for it is, four days.
tadaa yii"suravadad ena. m paa. saa. nam apasaarayata, tata. h pramiitasya bhaginii marthaavadat prabho, adhunaa tatra durgandho jaata. h, yatodya catvaari dinaani "sma"saane sa ti. s.thati|
40 Jesus saith unto her—Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldst believe, thou shouldst see the glory of God?
tadaa yii"suravaadiit, yadi vi"svasi. si tarhii"svarasya mahimaprakaa"sa. m drak. syasi kathaamimaa. m ki. m tubhya. m naakathaya. m?
41 So they took away the stone. And, Jesus, lifted up his eyes on high, and said—Father! I thank thee, thou didst hear me:
tadaa m. rtasya "sma"saanaat paa. saa. no. apasaarite yii"suruurdvva. m pa"syan akathayat, he pita rmama nevesanam a"s. r.no. h kaara. naadasmaat tvaa. m dhanya. m vadaami|
42 I, indeed, knew that, always, unto me, thou dost hearken; but, for the sake of the multitude standing around, I spake, —that they might believe that, thou, didst send me forth.
tva. m satata. m "s. r.no. si tadapyaha. m jaanaami, kintu tva. m maa. m yat prairayastad yathaasmin sthaane sthitaa lokaa vi"svasanti tadartham ida. m vaakya. m vadaami|
43 And, these things, having said, with a loud voice, he cried out—Lazarus! Come forth!
imaa. m kathaa. m kathayitvaa sa proccairaahvayat, he iliyaasar bahiraagaccha|
44 He that was dead came forth, bound feet and hands with bandages, and, his face, with a napkin, was bound about. Jesus saith unto them—Loose him, and let him go.
tata. h sa pramiita. h "sma"saanavastrai rbaddhahastapaado gaatramaarjanavaasasaa baddhamukha"sca bahiraagacchat| yii"suruditavaan bandhanaani mocayitvaa tyajataina. m|
45 Many therefore from among the Jews, who had come unto Mary, and gazed on what he did, believed on him
mariyama. h samiipam aagataa ye yihuudiiyalokaastadaa yii"soretat karmmaapa"syan te. saa. m bahavo vya"svasan,
46 but, certain from among them, went away unto the Pharisees, and told them what Jesus had done.
kintu kecidanye phiruu"sinaa. m samiipa. m gatvaa yii"soretasya karmma. no vaarttaam avadan|
47 The High-priests and Pharisees, therefore, brought together a high-council, and were saying—What are we to do, in that, this man, doeth, many signs?
tata. h para. m pradhaanayaajakaa. h phiruu"sinaa"sca sabhaa. m k. rtvaa vyaaharan vaya. m ki. m kurmma. h? e. sa maanavo bahuunyaa"scaryyakarmmaa. ni karoti|
48 If we let him alone thus, all, will believe on him, and the Romans will come, and take away, both our place and nation.
yadiid. r"sa. m karmma karttu. m na vaarayaamastarhi sarvve lokaastasmin vi"svasi. syanti romilokaa"scaagatyaasmaakam anayaa raajadhaanyaa saarddha. m raajyam aachetsyanti|
49 But, a certain one from among them, Caiaphas, being, High-priest, for that year, said unto them—Ye, know, nothing at all;
tadaa te. saa. m kiyaphaanaamaa yastasmin vatsare mahaayaajakapade nyayujyata sa pratyavadad yuuya. m kimapi na jaaniitha;
50 nor do ye take into account, that it is profitable for you that, one man, should die for the people, and not, the whole nation, perish.
samagrade"sasya vinaa"satopi sarvvalokaartham ekasya janasya mara. nam asmaaka. m ma"ngalahetukam etasya vivecanaamapi na kurutha|
51 This, however, from himself, he spake not, but, being, High-priest, for that year, he prophesied, that Jesus was about to die for the nation;
etaa. m kathaa. m sa nijabuddhyaa vyaaharad iti na,
52 and, not for the nation only, but that, the scattered children of God also, he might gather together into one.

53 From that day, therefore, they took counsel, that they might put him to death.
taddinamaarabhya te katha. m ta. m hantu. m "saknuvantiiti mantra. naa. m karttu. m praarebhire|
54 Jesus, therefore, no longer openly, was walking among the Jews, but departed thence, into the country near the desert, unto a city called, Ephraim; and, there, abode, with his disciples.
ataeva yihuudiiyaanaa. m madhye yii"su. h saprakaa"sa. m gamanaagamane ak. rtvaa tasmaad gatvaa praantarasya samiipasthaayiprade"sasyephraayim naamni nagare "si. syai. h saaka. m kaala. m yaapayitu. m praarebhe|
55 Now the passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up unto Jerusalem, out of the country, before the passover, that they might purify themselves.
anantara. m yihuudiiyaanaa. m nistaarotsave nika. tavarttini sati tadutsavaat puurvva. m svaan "suciin karttu. m bahavo janaa graamebhyo yiruu"saalam nagaram aagacchan,
56 They were therefore seeking Jesus, and were saying one to another, in the temple, standing—How seemeth it unto you? that he will in nowise come unto the feast?
yii"soranve. sa. na. m k. rtvaa mandire da. n.daayamaanaa. h santa. h paraspara. m vyaaharan, yu. smaaka. m kiid. r"so bodho jaayate? sa kim utsave. asmin atraagami. syati?
57 Now the High-priests and the Pharisees had given commands, that, if anyone came to know where he was, he should inform [them], so that they might seize him.
