< John 11 >
1 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister.
anantaraM mariyam tasyA bhaginI marthA ca yasmin vaithanIyAgrAmE vasatastasmin grAmE iliyAsar nAmA pIPita Eka AsIt|
2 And Mary was she who anointed the Lord with perfume, and wiped his feet with her hair—whose brother Lazarus was sick.
yA mariyam prabhuM sugandhitElaina marddayitvA svakEzaistasya caraNau samamArjat tasyA bhrAtA sa iliyAsar rOgI|
3 The sisters, therefore, sent out unto him, saying—Lord, see! he whom thou tenderly lovest, is sick.
aparanjca hE prabhO bhavAn yasmin prIyatE sa Eva pIPitOstIti kathAM kathayitvA tasya bhaginyau prESitavatyau|
4 But Jesus hearing, said—This sickness, is not unto death, but for the glory of God, —that the Son of God may be glorified thereby.
tadA yIzurimAM vArttAM zrutvAkathayata pIPEyaM maraNArthaM na kintvIzvarasya mahimArtham Izvaraputrasya mahimaprakAzArthanjca jAtA|
5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
yIzu ryadyapimarthAyAM tadbhaginyAm iliyAsari cAprIyata,
6 When, therefore, he heard that he was sick, then, indeed, he abode in the place where he was, two days.
tathApi iliyAsaraH pIPAyAH kathaM zrutvA yatra AsIt tatraiva dinadvayamatiSThat|
7 Then, after this, he saith unto the disciples—Let us be leading on into Judaea, again.
tataH param sa ziSyAnakathayad vayaM puna ryihUdIyapradEzaM yAmaH|
8 The disciples say unto him—Rabbi! just now, were the Jews seeking to stone thee—and, again, goest thou thither?
tatastE pratyavadan, hE gurO svalpadinAni gatAni yihUdIyAstvAM pASANai rhantum udyatAstathApi kiM punastatra yAsyasi?
9 Jesus answered—Are there not, twelve hours, in the day? If one walk in the day, he doth no stumble, because, the light of this world, he seeth;
yIzuH pratyavadat, Ekasmin dinE kiM dvAdazaghaTikA na bhavanti? kOpi divA gacchan na skhalati yataH sa EtajjagatO dIptiM prApnOti|
10 But, if one walk in the night, he stumbleth, because, the light, is not in him.
kintu rAtrau gacchan skhalati yatO hEtOstatra dIpti rnAsti|
11 These things, he said, and, after this, he saith unto them—Lazarus, our dear friend, hath fallen asleep; but I am going, that I may awake him.
imAM kathAM kathayitvA sa tAnavadad, asmAkaM bandhuH iliyAsar nidritObhUd idAnIM taM nidrAtO jAgarayituM gacchAmi|
12 The disciples, therefore, said unto him—Lord! if he have fallen asleep, he will recover.
yIzu rmRtau kathAmimAM kathitavAn kintu vizrAmArthaM nidrAyAM kathitavAn iti jnjAtvA ziSyA akathayan,
13 But Jesus had spoken concerning his death; whereas, they, supposed that, concerning the taking of rest in sleep, he had been speaking.
hE gurO sa yadi nidrAti tarhi bhadramEva|
14 Jesus, therefore, then, said unto them, plainly, —Lazarus, died;
tadA yIzuH spaSTaM tAn vyAharat, iliyAsar amriyata;
15 and I rejoice, for your sake—that ye may believe, —that I was not there; but let us be going unto him.
kintu yUyaM yathA pratItha tadarthamahaM tatra na sthitavAn ityasmAd yuSmannimittam AhlAditOhaM, tathApi tasya samIpE yAma|
16 Thomas, therefore, the one called Didymus, said unto his fellow-disciples—Let, us also, be going, that we may die with him.
tadA thOmA yaM didumaM vadanti sa sagginaH ziSyAn avadad vayamapi gatvA tEna sArddhaM mriyAmahai|
17 Jesus, therefore, coming, found that, four days already, had he been in the tomb.
yIzustatrOpasthAya iliyAsaraH zmazAnE sthApanAt catvAri dinAni gatAnIti vArttAM zrutavAn|
18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off;
vaithanIyA yirUzAlamaH samIpasthA krOzaikamAtrAntaritA;
19 and, many from among the Jews, had come unto Martha and Mary, that they might console them concerning their brother.
tasmAd bahavO yihUdIyA marthAM mariyamanjca bhyAtRzOkApannAM sAntvayituM tayOH samIpam Agacchan|
20 Martha, therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet him; but, Mary, in the house, remained sitting.
marthA yIzOrAgamanavArtAM zrutvaiva taM sAkSAd akarOt kintu mariyam gEha upavizya sthitA|
21 Martha, therefore, said unto Jesus—Lord! if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;
tadA marthA yIzumavAdat, hE prabhO yadi bhavAn atrAsthAsyat tarhi mama bhrAtA nAmariSyat|
22 And, now, I know, that, whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God, will give unto thee.
kintvidAnImapi yad IzvarE prArthayiSyatE Izvarastad dAsyatIti jAnE'haM|
23 Jesus saith unto her—Thy brother shall rise.
yIzuravAdIt tava bhrAtA samutthAsyati|
24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise, in the resurrection, in the last day.
marthA vyAharat zESadivasE sa utthAnasamayE prOtthAsyatIti jAnE'haM|
25 Jesus said unto her—I, am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth on me, even though he die, shall live again!
tadA yIzuH kathitavAn ahamEva utthApayitA jIvayitA ca yaH kazcana mayi vizvasiti sa mRtvApi jIviSyati;
26 And, no one who liveth again and believeth on me, shall in anywise die, unto times age-abiding. Believest thou this? (aiōn )
yaH kazcana ca jIvan mayi vizvasiti sa kadApi na mariSyati, asyAM kathAyAM kiM vizvasiSi? (aiōn )
27 She saith unto him—Yea, Lord! I, have believed, that, thou, art the Christ, the Son of God, —He who, into the world, should come.
sAvadat prabhO yasyAvataraNApEkSAsti bhavAn saEvAbhiSiktta Izvaraputra iti vizvasimi|
28 And this saying, she went away, and called Mary her sister, secretly, saying—The teacher, is present, and calleth thee.
iti kathAM kathayitvA sA gatvA svAM bhaginIM mariyamaM guptamAhUya vyAharat gururupatiSThati tvAmAhUyati ca|
29 And, she, when she heard, was roused up quickly, and was coming unto him.
kathAmimAM zrutvA sA tUrNam utthAya tasya samIpam agacchat|
30 Not yet, however, had Jesus come into the village, but was still in the place where, Martha, met him.
yIzu rgrAmamadhyaM na pravizya yatra marthA taM sAkSAd akarOt tatra sthitavAn|
31 The Jews, therefore, who were with her in the house and consoling her, seeing Mary, that quickly she arose and went out, followed her, supposing that she was withdrawing unto the tomb, that she might weep there.
yE yihUdIyA mariyamA sAkaM gRhE tiSThantastAm asAntvayana tE tAM kSipram utthAya gacchantiM vilOkya vyAharan, sa zmazAnE rOdituM yAti, ityuktvA tE tasyAH pazcAd agacchan|
32 Mary, therefore, when she came where Jesus was, seeing him, fell at his feet, saying unto him—Lord! if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
yatra yIzuratiSThat tatra mariyam upasthAya taM dRSTvA tasya caraNayOH patitvA vyAharat hE prabhO yadi bhavAn atrAsthAsyat tarhi mama bhrAtA nAmariSyat|
33 Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, was indignant in the spirit, and troubled himself,
yIzustAM tasyAH sagginO yihUdIyAMzca rudatO vilOkya zOkArttaH san dIrghaM nizvasya kathitavAn taM kutrAsthApayata?
34 and said—Where have ye laid him? They say unto him—Lord! come and see.
tE vyAharan, hE prabhO bhavAn Agatya pazyatu|
36 The Jews, therefore, were saying—See! how tenderly he loved him!
ataEva yihUdIyA avadan, pazyatAyaM tasmin kidRg apriyata|
37 But, some from among them, said—Could not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that, this one also, should not have died?
tESAM kEcid avadan yOndhAya cakSuSI dattavAn sa kim asya mRtyuM nivArayituM nAzaknOt?
38 Jesus, therefore, again, being indignant within himself, cometh unto the tomb. Now it was a cave, and, a stone, was lying thereon.
tatO yIzuH punarantardIrghaM nizvasya zmazAnAntikam agacchat| tat zmazAnam EkaM gahvaraM tanmukhE pASANa Eka AsIt|
39 Jesus, saith, Take ye away the stone! Martha, the sister of the deceased, saith unto him—Lord! by this time, he stinketh, for it is, four days.
tadA yIzuravadad EnaM pASANam apasArayata, tataH pramItasya bhaginI marthAvadat prabhO, adhunA tatra durgandhO jAtaH, yatOdya catvAri dinAni zmazAnE sa tiSThati|
40 Jesus saith unto her—Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldst believe, thou shouldst see the glory of God?
tadA yIzuravAdIt, yadi vizvasiSi tarhIzvarasya mahimaprakAzaM drakSyasi kathAmimAM kiM tubhyaM nAkathayaM?
41 So they took away the stone. And, Jesus, lifted up his eyes on high, and said—Father! I thank thee, thou didst hear me:
tadA mRtasya zmazAnAt pASANO'pasAritE yIzurUrdvvaM pazyan akathayat, hE pita rmama nEvEsanam azRNOH kAraNAdasmAt tvAM dhanyaM vadAmi|
42 I, indeed, knew that, always, unto me, thou dost hearken; but, for the sake of the multitude standing around, I spake, —that they might believe that, thou, didst send me forth.
tvaM satataM zRNOSi tadapyahaM jAnAmi, kintu tvaM mAM yat prairayastad yathAsmin sthAnE sthitA lOkA vizvasanti tadartham idaM vAkyaM vadAmi|
43 And, these things, having said, with a loud voice, he cried out—Lazarus! Come forth!
imAM kathAM kathayitvA sa prOccairAhvayat, hE iliyAsar bahirAgaccha|
44 He that was dead came forth, bound feet and hands with bandages, and, his face, with a napkin, was bound about. Jesus saith unto them—Loose him, and let him go.
tataH sa pramItaH zmazAnavastrai rbaddhahastapAdO gAtramArjanavAsasA baddhamukhazca bahirAgacchat| yIzuruditavAn bandhanAni mOcayitvA tyajatainaM|
45 Many therefore from among the Jews, who had come unto Mary, and gazed on what he did, believed on him
mariyamaH samIpam AgatA yE yihUdIyalOkAstadA yIzOrEtat karmmApazyan tESAM bahavO vyazvasan,
46 but, certain from among them, went away unto the Pharisees, and told them what Jesus had done.
kintu kEcidanyE phirUzinAM samIpaM gatvA yIzOrEtasya karmmaNO vArttAm avadan|
47 The High-priests and Pharisees, therefore, brought together a high-council, and were saying—What are we to do, in that, this man, doeth, many signs?
tataH paraM pradhAnayAjakAH phirUzinAzca sabhAM kRtvA vyAharan vayaM kiM kurmmaH? ESa mAnavO bahUnyAzcaryyakarmmANi karOti|
48 If we let him alone thus, all, will believe on him, and the Romans will come, and take away, both our place and nation.
yadIdRzaM karmma karttuM na vArayAmastarhi sarvvE lOkAstasmin vizvasiSyanti rOmilOkAzcAgatyAsmAkam anayA rAjadhAnyA sArddhaM rAjyam AchEtsyanti|
49 But, a certain one from among them, Caiaphas, being, High-priest, for that year, said unto them—Ye, know, nothing at all;
tadA tESAM kiyaphAnAmA yastasmin vatsarE mahAyAjakapadE nyayujyata sa pratyavadad yUyaM kimapi na jAnItha;
50 nor do ye take into account, that it is profitable for you that, one man, should die for the people, and not, the whole nation, perish.
samagradEzasya vinAzatOpi sarvvalOkArtham Ekasya janasya maraNam asmAkaM maggalahEtukam Etasya vivEcanAmapi na kurutha|
51 This, however, from himself, he spake not, but, being, High-priest, for that year, he prophesied, that Jesus was about to die for the nation;
EtAM kathAM sa nijabuddhyA vyAharad iti na,
52 and, not for the nation only, but that, the scattered children of God also, he might gather together into one.
kintu yIzUstaddEzIyAnAM kAraNAt prANAn tyakSyati, dizi dizi vikIrNAn Izvarasya santAnAn saMgRhyaikajAtiM kariSyati ca, tasmin vatsarE kiyaphA mahAyAjakatvapadE niyuktaH san idaM bhaviSyadvAkyaM kathitavAn|
53 From that day, therefore, they took counsel, that they might put him to death.
taddinamArabhya tE kathaM taM hantuM zaknuvantIti mantraNAM karttuM prArEbhirE|
54 Jesus, therefore, no longer openly, was walking among the Jews, but departed thence, into the country near the desert, unto a city called, Ephraim; and, there, abode, with his disciples.
ataEva yihUdIyAnAM madhyE yIzuH saprakAzaM gamanAgamanE akRtvA tasmAd gatvA prAntarasya samIpasthAyipradEzasyEphrAyim nAmni nagarE ziSyaiH sAkaM kAlaM yApayituM prArEbhE|
55 Now the passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up unto Jerusalem, out of the country, before the passover, that they might purify themselves.
anantaraM yihUdIyAnAM nistArOtsavE nikaTavarttini sati tadutsavAt pUrvvaM svAn zucIn karttuM bahavO janA grAmEbhyO yirUzAlam nagaram Agacchan,
56 They were therefore seeking Jesus, and were saying one to another, in the temple, standing—How seemeth it unto you? that he will in nowise come unto the feast?
yIzOranvESaNaM kRtvA mandirE daNPAyamAnAH santaH parasparaM vyAharan, yuSmAkaM kIdRzO bOdhO jAyatE? sa kim utsavE'smin atrAgamiSyati?
57 Now the High-priests and the Pharisees had given commands, that, if anyone came to know where he was, he should inform [them], so that they might seize him.
sa ca kutrAsti yadyEtat kazcid vEtti tarhi darzayatu pradhAnayAjakAH phirUzinazca taM dharttuM pUrvvam imAm AjnjAM prAcArayan|
