Job 5
1 Call, I pray thee—is there one to answer thee? Or, to which of the holy ones, wilt thou turn?
»Ja, rufe nur! Ist jemand da, der dir Antwort gibt? Und an wen von den heiligen (Engeln) willst du dich wenden?
2 For, to the foolish man, death is caused by vexation, and, the simple one, is slain by jealousy.
Vielmehr den Toren bringt sein Unmut um, und den Einfältigen tötet sein Eifern.
3 I, have seen the foolish taking root, and then hath his home decayed, in a moment:
Ich selbst habe einen Toren zwar Wurzel schlagen sehen, doch gar schnell hatte ich seine Wohnstätte zu verwünschen.
4 His children are far removed from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, and there is none to deliver:
Seinen Kindern blieb die Hilfe fern, und sie wurden im Tor zertreten, ohne daß ein Retter da war.
5 Whose harvest, the hungry, eateth up, and, even out of thorn hedges, he taketh it, and the snare gapeth for their substance.
Seine Ernte verzehrte ein anderer, der danach hungerte und sie sogar hinter dem Dorngehege wegholte; und Durstige schnappten nach seinem Vermögen.
6 For sorrow, cometh not forth out of the dust, —nor, out of the ground, sprouteth trouble.
Denn nicht aus dem Erdenstaube erwächst das Unheil, und das Leid sproßt nicht aus der Ackererde hervor,
7 Though, man, to trouble, were born, as, sparks, on high, do soar,
sondern der Mensch erzeugt das Leid, wie die Kinder der Flamme einen hohen Flug zu nehmen pflegen.«
8 Yet indeed, I, would seek unto El, and, unto Elohim, would I set forth any cause: —
»Doch ich, an den Höchsten würde ich mich wenden und meine Sache Gott anheimstellen,
9 Who doeth great things, beyond all search, —Wondrous things, till they cannot be recounted;
ihm, der große und unerforschliche Dinge tut, Wunderbares ohne Maß und Zahl –
10 Who giveth rain, upon the face of the earth, and sendeth forth waters, over the face of the open fields;
ihm, der Regen über die Erde hin sendet und des Himmels Naß auf die Fluren fallen läßt –,
11 Setting the lowly on high, and, mourners, are uplifted to safety;
insofern er Niedrige emporhebt und Trauernde sich des höchsten Glücks erfreuen läßt;
12 Who doth frustrate the schemes of the crafty, that their hands cannot achieve abiding success;
ihm, der die Pläne der Listigen vereitelt, so daß ihre Hände nichts Erfolgreiches schaffen;
13 Who captureth the wise in their own craftiness, yea the headlong counsel of the crooked:
ihm, der die Klugen trotz ihrer Schlauheit fängt, so daß die Verschlagenen sich in ihren Anschlägen überstürzen:
14 By day, they encounter darkness, and, as though it were night, they grope at high noon.
am hellen Tage stoßen sie auf Finsternis, und am Mittag tappen sie im Dunkel wie bei Nacht.
15 But he saveth from the sword, out of their mouth, and, out of the hand of the strong, the needy.
So rettet er den Wehrlosen vor dem Schwert aus ihrem Rachen, und aus des Starken Faust den Geringen.
16 Thus to the poor hath come hope, and, perversity, hath shut her mouth.
So erblüht dem Schwachen neue Hoffnung, die Bosheit aber muß ihren Mund schließen.«
17 Lo! how happy is the man whom God correcteth! Therefore, the chastening of the Almighty, do not thou refuse;
»O wohl dem Menschen, den Gott in Zucht nimmt! Darum verschmähe die Züchtigung des Allmächtigen nicht!
18 For, he, woundeth that he may bind up, He smiteth through, that, his own hands, may heal.
Denn er verwundet wohl, doch er verbindet auch; wenn er zerschlägt, so heilen seine Hände auch wieder.
19 In six troubles, he will rescue thee, and, in seven, there shall smite thee no misfortune:
In sechs Drangsalen errettet er dich, und in sieben wird kein Unheil dich treffen.
20 In famine, he will ransom thee from death, and in battle from the power of the sword;
In Hungersnot bewahrt er dich vor dem Tode und im Kriege vor der Gewalt des Schwertes.
21 During the scourge of the tongue, shalt thou be hid, neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh;
Vor den Geißelhieben der Zunge wirst du geborgen sein und brauchst nicht vor der Verheerung zu bangen, daß sie dich erreicht.
22 At destruction and at hunger, shalt thou laugh, and, of the wild beast of the earth, be not thou afraid;
Der Verwüstung und der Hungersnot darfst du lachen und hast von den wilden Tieren des Landes nichts zu befürchten;
23 For, with the stones of the field, shall be thy covenant, and, the wild beast of the field, hath been made thy friend;
denn mit den Steinen des Feldes stehst du im Bunde, und das Getier des Feldes lebt mit dir in Frieden.
24 And thou shalt know that, at peace, is thy tent, and shalt visit thy fold, and miss nothing;
So wirst du es denn erfahren, daß dein Zelt in Sicherheit ist, und überblickst du dein Gehöft, so wirst du nichts vermissen
25 And thou shalt know, that numerous is thy seed, and, thine offspring, like the young shoots of the field.
und wirst es erleben, daß deine Nachkommenschaft zahlreich ist und dein Nachwuchs gleich dem Gras der Flur.
26 Thou shalt come, yet robust, to the grave, as a stack of sheaves mounteth up in its season.
In vollreifem Alter wirst du in die Gruft eingehen, wie der Garbenhaufen eingebracht wird zur rechten Zeit.
27 Lo! as for this, we have searched it out—so, it is, Hear it, and know, thou, for thyself.
Siehe, dies ist es, was wir erforscht haben, so ist es: vernimm es und beherzige es zu deinem Heil!«
