Job 38
1 Then Yahweh responded to Job, out of a storm, and said: —
Aussitôt qu'Elihou eut fini son discours, le Seigneur dit à Job à travers un nuage et un tourbillon:
2 Who is it that darkeneth counsel, by words, without knowledge?
Quel est celui qui me cache ses desseins? Il renferme des pensées en son cœur; croit-il qu'elles m'échapperont?
3 Gird, I pray thee—like a strong man—thy loins, that I may ask thee, and inform thou me:
Ceins-toi les reins comme un homme; je vais te questionner: réponds-moi.
4 Where wast thou, when I founded the earth? Tell, if thou knowest understanding!
Où étais-tu quand j'ai créé la terre? Déclare-le-moi si tu en as connaissance.
5 Who set the measurements thereof, if thou knowest? Or who stretched out over it a line?
Qui en a réglé les dimensions; le sais-tu? Qui a promené sur elle le cordeau pour en prendre la mesure?
6 Whereon were the pedestals thereof sunk? Or who laid the corner stone thereof; —
Comment en a-t-on attaché les anneaux? Qui a posé sur elle la pierre angulaire?
7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
Lorsque les astres ont paru, tous mes anges à haute voix m'ont applaudi.
8 Or [who] shut in, with double doors, the sea, when, bursting out of the womb, it came forth;
J'ai renfermé la mer, j'ai placé des portes pour que, dans sa fureur, elle ne pût s'élancer hors des entrailles qui la contiennent.
9 When I put a cloud as the garment thereof, and a thick cloud as the swaddling-band thereof;
Pour langes, je lui ai donné les brouillards, et pour vêtement les nuées.
10 And brake off for it my boundary, and fixed a bar and double doors;
J'ai fixé ses limites, je l'ai entourée de battants et de verrous.
11 And said—Hitherto, shalt thou come, and no further, —and, here, shalt thou set a limit to the majesty of thy waves?
Je lui ai dit: Tu iras jusque-là, tu n'iras pas plus loin; tes vagues se briseront sur toi-même.
12 Since thy days [began] hast thou commanded the morning? or caused the dawn to know its place;
Est-ce de ton temps que j'ai disposé la lueur de l'aurore? et que l'étoile du matin a su qu'elle avait pour devoir
13 That it might lay hold of the wings of the earth, and the lawless be shaken out of it?
De secouer la terre, en la tenant par les deux ailes, et d'en faire tomber les impies?
14 It transformeth itself like the clay of a seal, so that things stand forth like one arrayed;
Est-ce toi qui, ayant pris de l'argile, as formé un être vivant et l'as mis sur la terre, doué de parole?
15 That their light may be withdrawn from the lawless, and, the lofty arm, be shivered.
As-tu ôté aux méchants la lumière, as-tu broyé les bras des orgueilleux?
16 Hast thou entered as far as the springs of the sea? Or, through the secret recesses of the resounding deep, hast thou wandered?
Es-tu descendu jusqu'au sources de la mer? As-tu marché dans les profondeurs de l'abîme?
17 Have the gates of death been disclosed to thee? And, the gates of the death-shade, couldst thou descry?
Les portes de la mort s'ouvrent-elles sans t'effrayer? Peux-tu soutenir sans épouvante les regards des gardiens de l'enfer? (questioned)
18 Hast thou well considered, even the breadths of the earth? Tell—if thou knowest it all!
La vaste étendue que le ciel recouvre ne t'a-t-elle pas averti? Dis-le- moi, que penses-tu de sa grandeur?
19 Where then is the way, the light shall abide? And, the darkness, where then is its place?
Quelle est la contrée où la lumière passe la nuit? Quel est le lieu où résident les ténèbres?
20 That thou mayest conduct it unto the bound thereof, and that thou mayest perceive the paths to its house.
Pourrais-tu m'y conduire, en connais-tu le chemin?
21 Thou knowest, for, then, hadst thou been born! And, in number, thy days are many!
Ne sais-je point que si dès lors tu étais né, tes jours ont été bien nombreux?
22 Hast thou entered into the treasuries of the snow? And, the treasuries of the hail, couldst thou see?
As-tu visité les trésors de la neige? As-tu vu les trésors de la grêle?
23 Which I have reserved for a time of distress, for the day of conflict and of war?
Les tiens-tu en réserve pour l'heure où se montreront tes ennemis, pour les jours de la guerre et des combats?
24 Where then is the way the lightning is parted? The east wind spreadeth itself abroad over the earth.
D'où viennent les frimas ou le vent du midi qui souffle sous le ciel?
25 Who hath cloven—for the torrent—a channel? Or a way for the lightning of thunders;
Quelle puissance a préparé la chute des pluies violente et la voie des cataclysmes
26 To give rain over the no-man’s land, the desert, where no son of earth is;
Qui fondent sur des contrées où il n'y a point d'hommes, sur des déserts où les mortels ne possèdent rien;
27 To satisfy the wild and the wilderness, to cause to spring forth the meadow of young grass?
Qui fécondent des champs inhabités et leur font produire une herbe luxuriante?
28 Hath the rain a father? Or who hath begotten the drops of dew?
Quel est le père de la pluie? Qui a produit les gouttes de la rosée?
29 Out of whose womb, came forth the ice? And, the hoar-frost of the heavens, who hath given it birth?
De quel sein est sortie la glace, d'où est né le givre du ciel
30 Like a stone, are the waters congealed, and, the face of the roaring deep, becometh firm!
Qui descend comme l'eau coule? Quel est celui qui frappe de terreur les impies?
31 Canst thou bind the fetters of the Pleiades? Or, the bands of Orion, canst thou unloose?
Est-ce toi qui as enchaîné les pléiades et ouvert la clôture qui retenait Orion?
32 Canst thou bring forth the signs of the Zodiac each in its season? Or, the Bear and her Young, canst thou lead?
Feras-tu voir Mazuroth en son temps, et conduiras-tu sur sa chevelure l'étoile du soir elle-même?
33 Knowest thou, the statutes of the heavens? Or didst thou appoint his dominion over the earth?
Connais-tu les révolutions du ciel et ce qui arrive en même temps sur la terre?
34 Canst thou lift up, to the thick cloud, thy voice, and the overflow of waters cover thee?
Appelles-tu de la voix le nuage, t'obéit-il, en s'ébranlant verse-t-il des torrents d'eau?
35 Canst thou send forth the lightnings, so that they go, and say to thee, Behold us?
Convoques-tu les éclairs? Viennent-ils en disant: Qu'y a-t-il?
36 Who hath put—into cloud-forms—wisdom? Or who hath given—to the meteor—understanding?
Qui donc a enseigné aux femmes l'art de faire des tissus; qui les a douées de l'adresse d'y tracer des ornements divers?
37 Who can count the thin clouds, in wisdom? And, the bottles of the heavens, who can empty out;
Qui sait, en sa sagesse, dompter les nuages, et qui a courbé le ciel vers la terre?
38 When the dust is cast into a clod, and the lumps are bound together?
Il a été malléable comme de la terre en poudre, et je l'ai consolidé comme un bloc de pierre.
39 Wilt thou hunt—for the Lioness—prey? Or, the craving of the Strong Lion, wilt thou satisfy;
Chasseras-tu pour donner aux lions leur nourriture? Rempliras-tu l'âme des serpents?
40 When they settle down in dens, abide in covert, for lying in wait?
Ils craignent dans leurs repaires, et ils se tiennent en embuscade au fond des forêts.
41 Who prepareth for the Raven his nourishment, —when his young ones—unto GOD—cry out, [when] they wander for lack of food?
Qui a préparé au corbeau sa pâture? car ses petits, en secouant leurs ailes, ont crié au Seigneur pour demander à manger.
