Job 34
1 Furthermore Elihu responded, and said: —
C’est pourquoi continuant son discours, Eliu dit encore ceci:
2 Hear, ye wise men, my words, and, ye who know, give ear unto me;
Sages, écoutez mes paroles, et vous, savants, prêtez-moi attention;
3 For, the ear, trieth words, as, the palate, tasteth in eating.
Car l’oreille discerne les paroles comme le palais juge des mets par le goût.
4 What is right, let us choose for ourselves, Let us know, among ourselves, what is good;
Formons-nous un jugement, et voyons entre nous ce qu’il y a de mieux.
5 For Job hath said—I am righteous, But, GOD, hath turned away my right;
Job a dit: Je suis juste, et Dieu détruit mon bon droit.
6 Concerning mine own right, shall I tell a falsehood? Incurable is my disease—not for any transgression.
Car dans le jugement porté contre moi, il y a fausseté: une flèche ardente m’a percé sans qu’il y ait en moi aucun péché.
7 What man is like Job? He drinketh in scoffing like water;
Quel est l’homme comme est Job, qui boit la dérision comme l’eau;
8 And is on the way to keep company, with the workers of iniquity, and to walk with lawless men.
Qui marche avec ceux qui opèrent l’iniquité, et chemine avec les hommes impies?
9 For he hath said, It profiteth not a man, when, his good pleasure, is with God.
Car il a dit: L’homme ne plaira pas à Dieu, quand même il aurait couru avec lui.
10 Wherefore, ye men of mind, hearken unto me, —Far be it, that, GOD, should be lawless, or, the Almighty, be perverse!
C’est pourquoi, hommes sensés, écoutez-moi: Loin de Dieu l’impiété, et loin du Tout-Puissant l’iniquité!
11 For, what any son of earth doeth, he repayeth him, and, according to every man’s course, he causeth him to find.
Car il rendra à l’homme selon ses œuvres, et il traitera chacun selon ses voies.
12 Nay, verily, GOD, will not condemn unjustly, —nor, the Almighty, pervert justice.
Certainement Dieu ne condamnera pas sans sujet, et le Tout-Puissant ne détruira pas le bon droit.
13 Who set him in charge of the earth? Or who appointed [him] the whole world?
Quel autre que lui a-t-il constitué sur la terre? ou qui a-t-il établi sur l’univers, qu’il a formé?
14 If he should set against him his heart, His spirit and his inspiration, unto himself he should withdraw.
S’il dirigeait vers lui son cœur, il attirerait à soi son esprit et son souffle.
15 All flesh together, would cease to breathe, and, the earth-born, unto dust, would return.
Toute chair périrait en même temps, et l’homme retournerait en cendre.
16 If then [thou hast] understanding, hear this, Give thou ear to the teaching of my words: —
Si donc tu as l’intelligence, écoute ce que l’on dit, et sois attentif à mes paroles.
17 Shall, the very hater of right, control? Or, the just—the mighty one, wilt thou condemn?
Est-ce que celui qui n’aime pas la justice, peut être guéri? et comment toi condamnes-tu si hautement celui qui est juste?
18 Doth one say to a king, Abandoned one! Or, Lawless one! unto nobles?
Celui qui dit à un roi: Apostat; qui appelle les grands impies;
19 For he hath shewn no respect of persons unto princes, neither hath he recognised the rich rather than the poor? For, the work of his hands, are they all.
Qui ne fait point acception de la personne des princes, qui n’a pas connu un tyran, lorsqu’il disputait contre un pauvre, parce que tous les hommes sont l’ouvrage de ses mains.
20 In a moment, they die, even in the middle of the night, —A people are convulsed when they pass away, A mighty one is removed, without hand;
Ils mourront tout à coup, et au milieu de la nuit les peuples se troubleront, ils passeront et le violent sera emporté sans la main de l’homme.
21 For, his eyes, are on the ways of a man, and, all his footsteps, he beholdeth, —
Car les yeux de Dieu sont sur les voies des hommes, et il considère tous leurs pas.
22 No darkness, and no death-shade, where the workers of iniquity may hide.
Il n’y a pas de ténèbres, et il n’y a pas d’ombre de mort, où puissent se cacher ceux qui opèrent l’iniquité.
23 For, unto no man, doth he appoint a repetition, —in going unto GOD in judgment;
Car il n’est plus au pouvoir de l’homme de venir devant Dieu en jugement.
24 He shattereth mighty ones unsearchably, and setteth up others in their stead:
Il en brisera une multitude innombrable, et il en établira d’autres à leur place.
25 Therefore, he observeth their works, —and overturneth [them] in a night, and they are crushed;
Car il connaît leurs œuvres, et c’est pourquoi il fera venir la nuit, et ils seront brisés.
26 In the place of lawless men, hath he chastised them, in presence of beholders.
Il les a frappés comme impies, dans un lieu où on les voyait.
27 Forasmuch, as they turned from following him, and, none of his ways, did they teach;
Eux qui, de propos délibéré, se sont retirés de lui, et n’ont pas voulu comprendre toutes ses voies;
28 Causing to reach him the outcry of the poor, Yea, the outcry of the oppressed, he heareth.
En sorte qu’ils ont fait parvenir jusqu’à lui le cri de l’indigent, et qu’il a entendu la voix des pauvres.
29 When, he, giveth quiet, who then shall condemn? And, when he hideth [his] face, who then shall sing of him? whether unto a nation or unto mankind altogether,
Car, lui accordant la paix, qui est celui qui condamnera? et s’il cache son visage aux nations et à tous les hommes, qui est-ce qui pourra le contempler?
30 That impious men may not reign, nor be ensnarers of the people.
C’est lui qui fait régner un homme hypocrite, à cause des péchés du peuple.
31 For, unto GOD, hath one [ever] said—I have borne punishment, I will not be perverse;
Puis donc que j’ai parlé à Dieu, je ne t’empêcherai pas de parler aussi.
32 What I see not, do, thou, shew me, If, perverseness, I have wrought, I will do it no more?
Si j’ai erré, instruis-moi; si j’ai parlé iniquité, je n’ajouterai plus rien.
33 According to thy mind, must he requite it, that thou hast refused? For, thou, must choose, and not, I, What then thou knowest, speak!
N’est-ce pas à toi que Dieu demande compte de cette iniquité qui t’a déplu? car c’est toi qui as commencé à parler, et non pas moi; si tu sais quelque chose de meilleur, parle.
34 The men of mind, will say to me, yea any wise man hearkening unto me: —
Que des hommes intelligents me parlent, et qu’un homme sage m’écoute.
35 Job, without knowledge, doth speak, and, his words, are not with discretion.
Pour Job, il a parlé follement, et ses paroles n’annoncent pas la science.
36 Would that Job might be tested to the uttermost, for replying with the men of iniquity:
Mon père, que Job soit éprouvé jusqu’à la fin; ne cessez point de frapper un homme d’iniquité.
37 For he addeth—unto his sin—rebellion, In our midst, he clappeth his hands, and multiplieth his sayings against GOD.
Parce qu’il ajoute à ses péchés le blasphème, qu’il soit, malgré cela, pressé par nos raisons; et qu’alors il appelle Dieu en jugement par ses discours.
