Job 31
1 A covenant, I solemnised for mine eyes, —How then could I gaze upon a virgin?
J'avais fait accord avec mes yeux; comment aurais-je donc arrêté mes regards sur une vierge?
2 Or what would have been my portion of GOD from above? Or what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?
Et quelle [serait] la portion [que] Dieu [m'aurait envoyée] d'en haut, et quel eût été l'héritage que le Tout-puissant m'eût [envoyé] des hauts lieux?
3 Is there not calamity, for the perverse? and misfortune, for the workers of iniquity?
La perdition n'est-elle pas pour l'injuste, et les accidents étranges pour les ouvriers d'iniquité?
4 Would, he, not see my ways? and of all my steps, take account?
N'a-t-il pas vu lui-même mes voies, et n'a-t-il pas compté toutes mes démarches?
5 Verily I walked not in falsity, nor did my foot haste unto deceit: —
Si j'ai marché dans le mensonge, et si mon pied s'est hâté à tromper,
6 Let him weigh me in balances of righteousness, —and let GOD take note of mine integrity!
Qu'on me pèse dans des balances justes, et Dieu connaîtra mon intégrité.
7 If my goings have swerved from the way, —and, after mine eyes, hath gone my heart, and, to my hands, hath adhered any stain,
Si mes pas se sont détournés du [droit] chemin, et si mon cœur a marché après mes yeux, et si quelque tache s'est attachée à mes mains,
8 Let me sow but, another, eat. And let, what I have springing up, be uprooted!
Que je sème, et qu'un autre mange [ce que j'aurai semé]; et que tout ce que j'aurai fait produire, soit déraciné!
9 If my heart hath been enticed unto a woman, or, by the door of my neighbour, I have lien in wait,
Si mon cœur a été séduit après quelque femme, et si j'ai demeuré en embûche à la porte de mon prochain,
10 Let my wife, grind to another, and, over her, let others bend!
Que ma femme soit déshonorée par un autre, et qu'elle soit prostituée à d'autres!
11 Surely that had been a shameful thing! and that an iniquity for the judges!
Vu que c'est une méchanceté préméditée, une de ces iniquités qui sont toutes jugées.
12 Surely, a fire, had that been, which, unto destruction, would have consumed, and, of all mine increase, had it torn up the root.
Car c'est un feu qui dévore jusqu'à consumer, et qui aurait déraciné tout mon revenu.
13 If I refused the right of my servant, or my handmaid, when they contended with me,
Si j'ai refusé de faire droit à mon serviteur ou à ma servante, quand ils ont contesté avec moi;
14 What then could I have done when GOD rose up? And, when he visited, what could I have answered him?
Car qu'eussé-je fait, quand le [Dieu] Fort se fût levé? et quand il m'en eût demandé compte, que lui aurais-je répondu?
15 Did not he who, in the womb, made me, make him? And is not he who formed us in the body one?
Celui qui m'a formé dans le ventre, ne les a-t-il pas faits aussi? et ne nous a-t-il pas tous formés de la même manière dans la matrice?
16 If I withheld—from pleasure—the poor, or, the eyes of the widow, I dimmed;
Si j'ai refusé aux pauvres ce qu'ils ont désiré; si j'ai fait consumer les yeux de la veuve;
17 Or, used to eat my morsel alone, so that the fatherless did not eat thereof;
Si j'ai mangé seul mes morceaux, et si l'orphelin n'en a point mangé;
18 Surely, from my youth, he grew up to me, as to a father, and, from my birth, I acted as guide to her:
(Car dès ma jeunesse il a été élevé avec moi, comme [chez son père], et dès le ventre de ma mère j'ai conduit l'orphelin.)
19 If I saw one perishing for lack of clothing, or that the needy had no covering;
Si j'ai vu un homme périr faute d'être vêtu, et le pauvre faute de couverture;
20 If his loins did not bless me, or if, with the fleece of my lambs, he did not warm himself;
Si ses reins ne m'ont point béni, et s'il n'a pas été échauffé de la laine de mes agneaux;
21 If I shook—against the fatherless—my hand, when I saw, in the gate, his need of my help,
Si j'ai levé la main contre l'orphelin, quand j'ai vu à la porte, que je pouvais l'aider;
22 Let, my shoulder, from the shoulder-blade, fall, and, my arm, from the upper bone, be broken;
Que l'os de mon épaule tombe et que mon bras soit cassé, et séparé de l'os auquel il est joint!
23 For, a dread unto me, was calamity from GOD, and, from his majesty, I could not escape.
Car j'ai eu frayeur de l'orage du [Dieu] Fort, et je ne saurais [subsister] devant sa majesté.
24 If I made gold my stay, and, to precious metal, said, My confidence!
Si j'ai mis mon espérance en l'or, et si j'ai dit au fin or: Tu es ma confiance;
25 If I rejoiced because great was my substance, and, an abundance, my hand had discovered;
Si je me suis réjoui de ce que mes biens étaient multipliés, et de ce que ma main en avait trouvé abondamment;
26 If I looked at the sun, when it flashed forth light, or at the moon, majestically marching along;
Si j'ai regardé le soleil lorsqu'il brillait le plus, et la lune marchant noblement;
27 And befooled secretly was my heart, so that my hand kissed my mouth,
Et si mon cœur a été séduit en secret, et si ma main a baisé ma bouche;
28 That too, had been a judicial iniquity, For I should have been false to GOD, above.
(Ce qui est aussi une iniquité toute jugée; car j'eusse renié le Dieu d'en haut.)
29 If rejoiced in the misfortune of him that hated me, or exulted when calamity found him; —
Si je me suis réjoui du malheur de celui qui me haïssait; si j'ai sauté de joie quand il lui est arrivé du mal.
30 Neither did I suffer my palate to sin, by asking, with a curse, for his life:
Je n'ai pas même permis à ma langue de pécher, en demandant sa mort avec imprécation.
31 If the men of my household have not said, Oh for some of his flesh—we cannot get filled,
Et les gens de ma maison n'ont point dit: Qui nous donnera de sa chair? nous n'en saurions être rassasiés.
32 Outside, the sojourner lodged not for the night, My doors—to the wayfarer, I threw open.
L'étranger n'a point passé la nuit dehors; j'ai ouvert ma porte au passant.
33 If I covered, like Adam, my transgressions, by hiding in my bosom mine iniquity,
Si j'ai caché mon péché comme Adam, pour couvrir mon iniquité en me flattant.
34 Then let me be made to tremble at a great throng, yea let, the contempt of families, terrify me, so that, keeping silence, I shall not go out of the door!
Quoique je pusse me faire craindre à une grande multitude, toutefois le moindre qui fût dans les familles m'inspirait de la crainte, et je me tenais dans le silence, et ne sortais point de la porte.
35 Oh that I had one to hear me, Lo! my crossmark, May, the Almighty, answer me! And would that, a book, mine opponent had written!
Ô! s'il y avait quelqu'un qui voulût m'entendre. Tout mon désir est que le Tout-puissant me réponde, et que ma partie adverse fasse un écrit [contre moi].
36 Oh! would I not, upon my shoulder, lift it, or bind it as a crown upon me;
Si je ne le porte sur mon épaule, et si je ne l'attache comme une couronne.
37 The number of my footsteps, I would declare to him, Like a noble, would I draw near to him.
Je lui raconterais tous mes pas, je m'approcherais de lui comme d'un Prince.
38 If, against me, my ground used to cry out, and, together, my ridges did weep;
Si ma terre crie contre moi, et si ses sillons pleurent;
39 If, the strength thereof, I used to eat, without payment, and, the soul of the holders thereof, I made groan;
Si j'ai mangé son fruit sans argent; si j'ai tourmenté l'esprit de ceux qui la possédaient.
40 Instead of wheat, let there come forth bramble, and, instead of barley, a bad-smelling weed! Ended are the words of Job.
Qu'elle me produise des épines au lieu de blé, et de l'ivraie au lieu d'orge. C'est ici la fin des paroles de Job.
