Job 29
1 And Job again took up his measure, and said,
Et Job, ajoutant à ce qui précède, dit:
2 Oh that it were with me as in the months of old, as in the days, when, GOD, used to watch over me;
Qui me rendra les jours d'autrefois, le temps où Dieu prenait de soin de me garder?
3 When his lamp shone over my head, by whose light, I could go through darkness;
Alors sa lampe brillait sur ma tête: alors avec sa lumière je ne craignais pas de marcher dans les ténèbres.
4 As I was, in the days of my prime, when, the intimacy of GOD, was over my tent;
Alors je foulais de mes pieds la voie; alors Dieu veillait sur ma maison.
5 While yet the Almighty was with me, round about me, were my young men;
Alors je m'asseyais à l'ombre de mes arbres, et mes enfants étaient autour de moi.
6 When my steps were bathed in milk, and, the rock, poured out beside me, rivulets of oil:
Alors mes sentiers ruisselaient de beurre et mes collines de lait.
7 When I went out to the gate unto the city, in the open place, made ready my seat,
Alors j'entrais dès l'aurore en la ville, et un siège m'était réservé sur les places.
8 Young men saw me, and hid themselves, and, the aged, arose—they stood;
Les jeunes gens à mon aspect se voilaient; et les anciens restaient debout.
9 Rulers, restrained speech, and, a hand, laid they on their mouth;
Les forts cessaient de parler; ils se mettaient un doigt sur la bouche.
10 The voice of nobles, was hushed, and their tongue to their palate, did cleave;
Attentifs à mes discours, ils me déclaraient heureux, après quoi leur langue était collée à leur gosier.
11 When, the ear, heard, then it pronounced me happy, When, the eye, saw, then it bare me witness;
L'oreille m'avait ouï et l'on me proclamait heureux; l'œil m'avait vu et l'on s'inclinait.
12 Because I used to deliver the oppressed who was crying out for aid, the fatherless also, and him that had no helper;
Car j'avais délivré le pauvre des mains du riche; j'avais protégé l'orphelin qui manquait d'appui.
13 The blessing of him that was ready to perish, upon me was wont to descend, and, the heart of the widow, caused I to sing for joy;
La bénédiction de l'abandonné s'adressait à moi; la bouche de la veuve aussi me bénissait.
14 Righteousness, I put on, and it clothed me, Like a robe and turban, was my, justice;
Je m'étais revêtu de justice; je m'étais enveloppé d'équité comme d'un manteau double.
15 Eyes, became I to the, blind, and, feet to the lame, was, I!
J'étais l'œil de l'aveugle et le pied du boiteux.
16 A father, was, I, to the needy, and, as for the cause which I knew not, I used to search it out;
J'étais le père des faibles; j'étudiais des causes que je ne connaissais pas.
17 And I shivered the fangs of the perverse, —and, out of his teeth, I tare the prey.
Aussi j'ai brisé les mâchoires de l'injuste; j'ai arraché de ses dents la proie qu'il avait saisie.
18 Then said I, Like a stem, shall I grow old, yea, as the sand, shall I multiply days:
Et j'ai dit: Mon âge se prolongera comme celui du palmier; ma vie sera de longue durée.
19 My root, is laid open to the waters, and, the dew, shall lodge for the night in my boughs;
La racine se montrera hors de l'eau, et la rosée passera la nuit dans ma moisson.
20 Mine honour, shall be young again with me, and, my bow, in my hand, be renewed.
Ma gloire est pour moi chose vaine, et elle marche mon arc à la main.
21 To me, men hearkened, and waited, and kept silence for my counsel;
A peine m'avait-on entendu que l'on s'attachait à moi; on gardait le silence en recueillant mes conseils.
22 After I had spoken, they spake not again, and, upon them, used my speech to drop;
Nul n'ajoutait à mes discours, et les hommes étaient pleins de joie que je leur avais parlé.
23 And they waited, as for rain, for me, and, their mouths, they opened wide for the spring-rain;
Comme la terre altérée reçoit la pluie, de même ils recevaient mes paroles.
24 I laughed at them—they lost confidence, and, the light of my countenance, they suffered not to fail;
Lorsque je riais avec eux, ils n'y pouvaient croire, et l'éclat de mon visage n'en était pas amoindri.
25 I chose out their way, and sat chief, —and abode, as king, in an army, as one who, to mourners, giveth comfort.
Je leur avais indiqué la voie, ils m'avaient institué leur chef, et ma demeure semblait celle d'un roi entouré de gardes ou d'un consolateur des affligés.
