Job 12
1 Then responded Job, and said: —
Et Job, répondant, dit:
2 Of a truth, ye, are the people, and, with you, wisdom, will die.
Ainsi vous, vous êtes les seuls hommes, et avec vous mourra la sagesse?
3 I also, have a mind like you, I, fall not short, of you, But who hath not such things as these?
J’ai cependant un cœur comme vous, et je ne vous suis pas inférieur; qui, en effet, ignore ce que vous savez?
4 A laughing-stock to one’s neighbour, do I become, one who hath called upon GOD and he hath answered him! A laughing-stock—a righteous man without blame!
Celui qui est raillé par son ami comme moi invoquera Dieu, et Dieu l’exaucera; car la simplicité du juste est tournée en dérision.
5 For ruin, there is contempt, in the thought of the man at ease, —ready, for such as are of faltering foot!
C’est une lampe méprisée dans les pensées des riches, mais préparée pour un temps marqué.
6 At peace are the tents that belong to the spoilers, and there is security to them who provoke GOD, To him who bringeth a god in his hand.
Les tentes des voleurs sont dans l’abondance, et ils provoquent audacieusement Dieu, quoique ce soit lui qui ait mis toutes choses en leurs mains.
7 But, in very deed, ask, I pray thee, the beasts, and they will teach thee, and the bird of the heavens, and it will tell thee;
Certes, interroge les bêtes, et elles te l’enseigneront; et les volatiles du ciel, et ils te l’indiqueront.
8 Or address the earth, and it will teach thee, and the fishes of the sea, will recount it to thee:
Parle à la terre, et elle te répondra; et les poissons de la mer te le raconteront.
9 Who knoweth not, among all these, that, the hand of Yahweh, hath done this?
Qui ignore que la main du Seigneur a fait toutes ces choses?
10 In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the spirit of all the flesh of men.
C’est dans sa main qu’est l’âme de tout vivant, et l’esprit de toute chair d’homme.
11 Doth not, the ear, try, words? even as, the palate, tasteth for itself, food?
Est-ce que l’oreille ne discerne pas les paroles, et le palais de celui qui mange la saveur des aliments?
12 In the Ancient, is wisdom, and [in] Length of Days, understanding:
Dans les vieillards est la sagesse, et dans une longue vie la prudence.
13 With Him, are wisdom and strength, to Him, pertain counsel and understanding.
En Dieu sont la sagesse et la force; c’est lui qui possède le conseil et la prudence.
14 Lo! He pulleth down, and it cannot be built, He closeth up over a man, and it cannot be opened:
S’il détruit, il n’y a personne pour édifier; s’il enferme un homme, nul ne pourra lui ouvrir.
15 Lo! He holdeth back the waters, and they dry up, or sendeth them out, and they transform the earth:
S’il retient les eaux, tout se desséchera; et, s’il les lâche, elles ravageront la terre.
16 With Him, is strength and effective wisdom, to Him, belong he that erreth, and he that causeth to err.
En lui sont la force et la sagesse: il connaît et celui qui trompe et celui qui est trompé.
17 Who leadeth away counsellors [as] a spoil, and, judges, He befooleth:
Il amène les conseillers à une fin insensée, et les juges à l’étourdissement.
18 The fetters of kings, He looseth, or hath bound a slave’s waistcloth about their loins:
Il délie le baudrier des rois, et ceint leurs reins d’une corde.
19 Who leadeth away priests [as] a spoil, and, men firmly seated, He overturneth:
Il fait que les prêtres vont sans gloire, et il renverse les grands;
20 Setting aside the speech of the trusty, and, the discernment of elders, He taketh away:
Changeant le langage des hommes véridiques, et enlevant la science des vieillards.
21 Pouring contempt upon nobles, and, the girdle of the mighty, hath He loosed:
Il verse le mépris sur les princes, en relevant ceux qui avaient été opprimés.
22 Laying open deep things, out of darkness, and bringing out to light, the death-shade:
C’est lui qui découvre les profondeurs des ténèbres, et produit à la lumière l’ombre de la mort.
23 Who giveth greatness to nations, or destroyeth them, Who spreadeth out nations, or leadeth them into exile:
C’est lui qui multiplie les nations et les perd, et qui, après les avoir renversées, les rétablit entièrement.
24 Who taketh away the sense of the chiefs of the people of the earth, and hath caused them to wander in a pathless waste:
C’est lui qui change le cœur des princes du peuple de la terre; qui les trompe, afin qu’ils marchent par où il n’y a point de voie.
25 They grope about in the dark, having no light, and He hath made them to reel, like a drunken man.
Ils tâtonneront comme dans les ténèbres, et ils ne marcheront pas à la lumière, et il les fera chanceler comme des hommes ivres.
