Job 12
1 Then responded Job, and said: —
Job reprit la parole et dit:
2 Of a truth, ye, are the people, and, with you, wisdom, will die.
Sans doute, vous êtes l’humanité entière, et avec vous mourra la sagesse!
3 I also, have a mind like you, I, fall not short, of you, But who hath not such things as these?
Moi aussi, j’ai un cœur comme vous, je ne vous le cède en rien: qui ne, peut user d’arguments pareils?
4 A laughing-stock to one’s neighbour, do I become, one who hath called upon GOD and he hath answered him! A laughing-stock—a righteous man without blame!
Je suis la risée des amis, moi qui invoque Dieu et à qui il répond; le juste, l’homme intègre est un objet de dérision!
5 For ruin, there is contempt, in the thought of the man at ease, —ready, for such as are of faltering foot!
Mépris au malheur! pensent les heureux du monde, voilà ce qui est fait pour ceux dont le pied chancelle!
6 At peace are the tents that belong to the spoilers, and there is security to them who provoke GOD, To him who bringeth a god in his hand.
Elles jouissent de la paix, les tentes des brigands; parfaite est la sécurité de ceux qui bravent le Tout-Puissant et ne reconnaissent d’autre dieu que leur force.
7 But, in very deed, ask, I pray thee, the beasts, and they will teach thee, and the bird of the heavens, and it will tell thee;
Toutefois, interroge, de grâce, les bêtes pour qu’elles t’enseignent, les oiseaux du ciel pour qu’ils te mettent au courant.
8 Or address the earth, and it will teach thee, and the fishes of the sea, will recount it to thee:
Ou bien adresse-toi à la terre pour qu’elle t’instruise, aux poissons de la mer pour qu’ils te donnent leur avis.
9 Who knoweth not, among all these, that, the hand of Yahweh, hath done this?
Qui ne sait, parmi tous ces êtres, que la main de l’Eternel a tout fait?
10 In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the spirit of all the flesh of men.
Il tient en sa main le souffle de tout vivant et l’esprit qui anime tout corps humain.
11 Doth not, the ear, try, words? even as, the palate, tasteth for itself, food?
L’Oreille n’apprécie-t-elle pas les paroles, tout comme le palais déguste les aliments?
12 In the Ancient, is wisdom, and [in] Length of Days, understanding:
La sagesse est l’apanage des vieillards, les longs jours vont de pair avec la raison.
13 With Him, are wisdom and strength, to Him, pertain counsel and understanding.
C’Est chez lui que se rencontrent la sagesse et la puissance; à lui appartiennent le conseil et l’intelligence.
14 Lo! He pulleth down, and it cannot be built, He closeth up over a man, and it cannot be opened:
Voyez, il démolit et personne ne peut rebâtir, il referme la porte sur un homme et personne ne peut l’ouvrir.
15 Lo! He holdeth back the waters, and they dry up, or sendeth them out, and they transform the earth:
Il arrête les eaux, et elles tarissent; il les déchaîne, et elles bouleversent la terre.
16 With Him, is strength and effective wisdom, to Him, belong he that erreth, and he that causeth to err.
Ses attributs sont la force et la sagesse; il est le maître de celui qui se fourvoie et du séducteur.
17 Who leadeth away counsellors [as] a spoil, and, judges, He befooleth:
Il fait marcher dans la démence les conseillers et livre les juges en proie à la folie.
18 The fetters of kings, He looseth, or hath bound a slave’s waistcloth about their loins:
II dissout l’autorité des rois et fixe une ceinture autour de leurs reins.
19 Who leadeth away priests [as] a spoil, and, men firmly seated, He overturneth:
Il frappé d’insanité les prêtres et culbute les puissants.
20 Setting aside the speech of the trusty, and, the discernment of elders, He taketh away:
Il enlève la parole aux orateurs éprouvés et ôte le jugement aux vieillards.
21 Pouring contempt upon nobles, and, the girdle of the mighty, hath He loosed:
II déverse la honte sur les nobles, et relâche la ceinture des vaillants.
22 Laying open deep things, out of darkness, and bringing out to light, the death-shade:
Du fond des ténèbres, il fait sortir au jour les choses cachées, et met en pleine lumière ce qui était couvert par l’ombre.
23 Who giveth greatness to nations, or destroyeth them, Who spreadeth out nations, or leadeth them into exile:
Il grandit les nations, puis il les perd; il les laisse s’étendre, puis il les déporte.
24 Who taketh away the sense of the chiefs of the people of the earth, and hath caused them to wander in a pathless waste:
Il ôte l’intelligence aux chefs des nations et les laisse s’égarer dans des solitudes sans route;
25 They grope about in the dark, having no light, and He hath made them to reel, like a drunken man.
là, ils tâtonnent dans une obscurité qui ne laisse percer aucune lueur; et Dieu les fait tituber comme un ivrogne.
