James 2
1 My brethren, do not, with respect for persons, be holding the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, [the Lord] of glory.
Mes frères, n'ayez point la foi en notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ glorieux, en ayant égard à l'apparence des personnes.
2 For, if there enter into your synagogue a man wearing gold rings in gay clothing, and there enter a destitute man also, in soiled clothing, —
Car s'il entre dans votre assemblée un homme qui porte un anneau d'or, et qui soit vêtu de quelque précieux habit; et qu’il y entre aussi quelque pauvre, vêtu de quelque méchant habit;
3 And ye eye him that hath on the gay clothing, and say, Thou, be sitting here, pleasantly, —and, unto the destitute man, say—Thou, stand, or sit there under my footstool,
Et que vous ayez égard à celui qui porte l’habit précieux, et lui disiez: toi, assieds-toi ici honorablement; et que vous disiez au pauvre: toi, tiens-toi là debout; ou assieds-toi sur mon marche-pied;
4 Would ye not have been led to make distinctions among yourselves, and have become judges with wicked reasonings?
N'avez-vous pas fait différence en vous-mêmes, et n'êtes-vous pas des juges qui avez des pensées injustes?
5 Hearken! my brethren beloved: —Hath not, God, chosen the destitute in the world [to be] rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?
Ecoutez, mes frères bien-aimés, Dieu n'a-t-il pas choisi les pauvres de ce monde, qui sont riches en la foi, et héritiers du Royaume qu'il a promis à ceux qui l'aiment?
6 Whereas, ye, have dishonoured the destitute man! Do not, the rich, oppress you? and, themselves, drag you into courts of justice?
Mais vous avez déshonoré le pauvre. Et cependant les riches ne vous oppriment-ils pas, et ne vous tirent-ils pas devant les Tribunaux?
7 Do not, they, defame the noble name which hath been invoked upon you?
Et ne sont-ce pas eux qui blasphèment le bon Nom, qui a été invoqué sur vous?
8 If ye are, indeed, fulfilling, a royal law, according to the scripture—Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, nobly, are ye doing;
Que si vous accomplissez la Loi royale, qui est selon l'Ecriture, tu aimeras ton prochain comme toi-même; vous faites bien.
9 But, if ye are shewing respect of persons, sin, are ye working, being convicted by the law as transgressors!
Mais si vous avez égard à l'apparence des personnes, vous commettez un péché, et vous êtes convaincus par la Loi comme des transgresseurs.
10 For, a man who shall keep, the whole law, but shall stumble in one thing, hath become, for all things, liable, —
Or quiconque aura gardé toute la Loi, s'il vient à pécher en un seul [point], il est coupable de tous.
11 For, he that hath said—Do not commit adultery, hath also said—Do not commit murder, —now, if thou dost not commit adultery, but dost commit murder, thou hast become a transgressor of law.
Car celui qui a dit: tu ne commettras point adultère, a dit aussi: tu ne tueras point. Si donc tu ne commets point adultère, mais que tu tues, tu es un transgresseur de la Loi.
12 So, be speaking, and, so, doing, as they who, through means of a law of freedom, are about to be judged;
Parlez et agissez comme devant être jugés par la Loi de la liberté.
13 For, the judgment, [will be] without mercy, unto him that hath shewed no mercy: Mercy, boasteth, over judgment.
Car il y aura une condamnation sans miséricorde sur celui qui n'aura point usé de miséricorde; mais la miséricorde se met à l'abri de la condamnation.
14 What profit, my brethren, —if one should be saying he hath, faith, but hath not, works; can his faith save him?
Mes frères, que servira-t-il à quelqu'un s'il dit qu'il a la foi, et qu'il n'ait point les œuvres? la foi le pourra-t-elle sauver?
15 If, a brother or sister, should be naked, and coming short of the daily food,
Et si le frère ou la sœur sont nus, et manquent de ce qui leur est nécessaire chaque jour pour vivre,
16 And one from among you should say unto them—Withdraw in peace, be getting warmed and fed, but should not give them the things needful for the body, What the profit?
Et que quelqu'un d'entre vous leur dise: allez en paix, chauffez-vous, et vous rassasiez; et que vous ne leur donniez point les choses nécessaires pour le corps, que leur servira cela?
17 So, also, faith, if it have not works, is dead, by itself.
De même aussi la foi, si elle n'a pas les œuvres, elle est morte en elle-même.
18 But one will say, —Thou, hast faith, and, I, have works, show me thy faith apart from thy works, and, I, unto thee, will shew, by my works, my faith.
Mais quelqu'un dira: tu as la foi, et moi j'ai les œuvres. Montre-moi [donc] ta foi sans les œuvres, et moi je te montrerai ma foi par mes œuvres.
19 Thou believest that God is, one: thou doest, well—Even the demons believe, and shudder!
Tu crois qu'il n'y a qu'un Dieu; tu fais bien; les Démons le croient aussi, et ils [en] tremblent.
20 But art thou willing to learn, O empty man! that, faith, apart from works, is, idle?
Mais, ô homme vain! veux-tu savoir que la foi qui est sans les œuvres est morte?
21 Abraham our father, was it not, by works, he was declared righteous—when he offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
Abraham notre père ne fut-il pas justifié par les œuvres, quand il offrit son fils Isaac sur l'autel?
22 Thou seest that, his faith, had been working together with his works, and by his works did his faith become full-grown, —
Ne vois-tu [donc] pas que sa foi agissait avec ses œuvres, et que ce fut par ses œuvres, que sa foi fut rendue parfaite;
23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith—And Abraham believed God, And it was reckoned to him as righteousness, and, God’s friend, was he called:
Et qu'ainsi cette Ecriture fut accomplie, qui dit: Abraham a cru en Dieu, et cela lui a été imputé à justice; et il a été appelé ami de Dieu.
24 Ye see that—by works, a man is declared righteous, and not by faith alone.
Vous voyez donc que l'homme est justifié par les œuvres, et non par la foi seulement.
25 And, in like manner also, Rahab the harlot, Was it not, by works, she was declared righteous, when she gave welcome unto the messengers, and, by another way, urged them forth?
Pareillement Rahab l'hospitalière, ne fut-elle pas justifiée par les œuvres, quand elle eut reçu les messagers, et qu'elle les eut mis dehors par un autre chemin?
26 Just as, the body, apart from spirit, is dead, so, our faith also, apart from works, is dead.
Car comme le corps sans esprit est mort, ainsi la foi qui est sans les œuvres est morte.
