Isaiah 48

1 Hear ye this—O house of Jacob, Ye who call yourselves by the name of Israel, Yea from the waters of Judah, came they forth, —Who swear by the name of Yahweh, And, by the God of Israel, call to remembrance—Not in truth, nor in righteousness;

Ecoutez ceci, maison de Jacob, vous qui êtes appelés du nom d’Israël, et qui êtes sortis de la source de Juda; vous qui jurez par le nom de Yahweh, et qui célébrez le Dieu d’Israël, mais sans sincérité ni droiture.

2 For of the holy city, do they call themselves, And on the God of Israel, do they stay themselves, —Yahweh of hosts, is his name.

Car ils tirent leur nom de la ville sainte, et ils s’appuient sur le Dieu d’Israël, dont le nom est Yahweh des armées.

3 Things in advance, of old, I declared, Yea out of mine own mouth, came they forth, that I might let them be known, —Suddenly, I wrought and they came to pass.

Dès longtemps, j’ai annoncé les premières choses; elles sortirent de ma bouche; je les proclamai; soudain j’ai agi, et elles sont arrivées.

4 Because I knew that—Obstinate, thou wast, —And, a sinew of iron, was thy neck, And thy brow, brazen,

Comme je savais que tu es dur, que ton cou est une barre de fer, et que ton front est d’airain,

5 therefore told I thee—in time past, Ere yet it came, I let thee hear, —Lest thou shouldest say Mine idol wrought them, Yea, my carved image and my molten image, commanded them!

je t’ai annoncé ces choses il y a longtemps; je te les ai déclarées avant qu’elles n’arrivent, de peur que tu ne dises: « Mon idole les a faites; mon dieu de bois ou de fonte les a ordonnées. »

6 Thou hast heard—see it whole, And will, ye, not tell? I have let thee hear new things—from the present time, Even secrets which ye knew not.

Tu l’as entendu; vois, tout s’est accompli; mais vous, ne le déclarerez-vous pas? Maintenant, je te fais entendre des choses nouvelles, cachées, que tu ne connais point.

7 Now, are they created, and not in time past, And, before to-day, thou hadst not heard of them, —Lest thou shouldest say, Lo! I knew them!

C’est maintenant qu’elles sont créées, et non auparavant; jusqu’à ce jour, tu n’en avais pas entendu parler, de peur que tu ne dises: « Voici, je le savais! »

8 Nay! thou hadst not heard, Nay! thou hadst not known, Nay! in time past, thine ear, was not opened, —For I knew that thou, wouldst be treacherous, Yea a transgressor from birth, hast thou been called.

Tu n’en as rien entendu, tu n’en as rien su; jamais ton oreille n’en a rien perçu, parce que je savais que tu es tout à fait infidèle, que ton nom est Prévaricateur dès le sein de ta mère.

9 For the sake of mine own Name, will I defer mine anger, And for my praise, will I restrain myself towards thee, —So as not to cut thee off.

A cause de mon nom, je retiens ma colère, et à cause de ma gloire, je patiente avec toi, pour ne pas t’exterminer.

10 Lo! I have refined thee, but not as silver, —I have tested thee, in a smelting-pot of affliction.

Voici, je t’ai fondu, mais sans obtenir l’argent; je t’ai éprouvé au creuset de l’affliction.

11 For mine own sake—for mine own sake, will I effectually work For how should it be profaned? And, my glory—to another, will I not give.

C’est pour l’amour de moi, pour l’amour de moi que je le fais; car comment mon nom serait-il profané? Je ne donnerai pas ma gloire à un autre.

12 Hearken unto me O Jacob, And Israel, my called one, —I, am, the Same I, the first, yea, I, the last:

Ecoute-moi, Jacob, et toi, Israël, que j’ai appelé; c’est moi, moi qui suis le premier, moi aussi qui suis le dernier.

13 Surely, mine own hand, founded the earth, And, my right hand, stretched out the heavens, —While I was calling unto them, they stood forth, at once

C’est aussi ma main qui a fondé la terre, et ma droite qui a étendu les cieux; c’est moi qui les appelle, et aussitôt ils se présentent.

14 Assemble yourselves—all of you and hear, Who among them, hath told these things? he whom Yahweh loveth, will execute—His pleasure, on Babylon, And his stroke on the Chaldeans.

Assemblez-vous tous et écoutez: qui d’entre eux a annoncé ces choses? — Celui qu’aime Yahweh accomplira sa volonté dans Babel, et son bras sera contre les Chaldéens. —

15 I—I, have spoken, Yea I have called him, —I have brought him in, and he shall make prosperous his way.

Moi, moi, j’ai parlé, et je l’ai appelé; je l’ai fait venir, et sa voie sera prospère.

16 Draw ye near unto me—hear ye this, Not in advance in secret, have I spoken, From the very time it cometh into being, there, am I, —And, now, My Lord Yahweh hath sent me and his spirit.

Approchez-vous de moi, entendez ceci: Dès l’origine je n’ai pas parlé en cachette; depuis que ces choses arrivent, je suis là; — Et maintenant le Seigneur Yahweh m’envoie avec son Esprit. —

17 Thus saith Yahweh—Thy Redeemer, The Holy One of Israel, —I—Yahweh, am thy God, Teaching thee to profit, Guiding thee in the way thou shouldest go.

Ainsi parle Yahweh, ton rédempteur, le Saint d’Israël: Moi, Yahweh, ton Dieu, je t’enseigne pour ton bien, je te conduis dans le chemin où tu dois marcher.

18 Oh! that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments, —Then had been, like a river, thy prosperity, And, thy righteousness, like the waves of the sea:

Oh! sois attentif à mes commandements, et ta paix sera comme un fleuve, ta justice comme les flots de la mer;

19 Then had been, like the sand, thy seed, And, the offspring of thy body, like the grains thereof, —Neither cut off nor destroyed had been his name from before me.

ta postérité sera comme le sable et le fruit de tes entrailles comme les grains de sable; son nom ne sera ni retranché ni effacé devant moi.

20 Come ye forth out of Babylon, Flee from among the Chaldeans, With triumphant voice, tell ye—let this be heard, Let it go forth as far as the end of the earth, —Say ye—Yahweh hath redeemed his servant Jacob!

Sortez de Babylone, fuyez les Chaldéens avec des cris de joie! Publiez-le, proclamez-le, faites-le savoir jusqu’à l’extrémité de la terre! Dites: « Yahweh a racheté son serviteur Jacob!

21 And they thirsted not, when, through dry places, he led them, Waters out of the rock, caused he to flow out to them, —Yea be cleft a rock and, there gushed out waters:

Ils n’ont pas soif dans le désert où il les a conduits; il fait couler pour eux l’eau du rocher; il fend le rocher, et les eaux jaillissent! »

22 No well-being, saith Yahweh to the lawless,

Il n’y a pas de paix pour les méchants, dit Yahweh.
