Isaiah 44
1 Now, then—hear, O Jacob, my Servant, —and Israel whom I have chosen:
Or, écoute, Jacob, ô mon serviteur! Israël, toi mon élu!
2 Thus, saith Yahweh—Who made thee and formed thee from birth, Who helpeth thee: Do not fear O my Servant Jacob, and Jeshurun whom I have chosen;
Ainsi parle l’Eternel, ton auteur, qui t’a formé dès le sein maternel, et qui sera ton appui: "Sois sans crainte, ô mon serviteur Jacob, Yechouroun, mon élu!
3 For I will pour, Water upon the thirsty soil, and Floods upon the dry ground, —I will pour My spirit upon thy seed, and My blessing upon thine offspring;
Car je veux répandre de l’eau sur le sol altéré, des rivières sur la terre aride; je veux répandre mon esprit sur ta postérité et ma bénédiction sur tes descendants.
4 So will they spring up among the grass, As willows by the water-courses:
Ils pousseront à travers les herbages comme les saules au bord des eaux courantes.
5 This one, will say Yahweh’s, am I, and That one, will call himself by the name of Jacob, and Yonder one will write on his hand—Yahweh’s, And after the name of Israel, will one entitle himself.
L’Un dira: "Je suis à l’Eternel," l’autre se réclamera du nom de Jacob; tel signera de sa main pour le Seigneur et se fera gloire du nom d’Isràël.
6 Thus saith Yahweh—King of Israel, Even his Redeemer, Yahweh of hosts, —I, am, First, and, I, Last, And besides me, there is no God.
Ainsi parle l’Eternel, roi et libérateur d’Israël, l’Eternel-Cebaot: "Je suis le premier, je suis le dernier, hors moi point de Dieu!
7 Who then, like me, can call, and declare it, and order it, for me, Seeing that I appointed an age-abiding people, —Or things yet to be, and that shall come to pass, Let them declare on their part.
Qui est comme moi? Qu’il proclame, qu’il expose qu’il me déduise les faits, depuis que j’ai fondé les races primitives; et les faits prochains et ceux de l’avenir, qu’il les annonce!
8 Do not ye dread, nor yet be alarmed, Have I not from olden time, told thee and declared? So that, ye, are my witnesses, —Whether there is a GOD besides me? Or is no Rock—I knew of none!
Ne craignez rien, ne vous alarmez point: ne vous l’ai-je pas dès longtemps appris et révélé, et n’êtes-vous pas mes témoins? Est-il un Dieu autre que moi, un Rocher protecteur sans mon aveu?
9 The fashioners of an image—all of them, are emptiness, And, the things they delight in, cannot profit, —And, their, witnesses, they, neither see nor know, That they may be ashamed.
Les fabricants d’images sculptées sont tous néant, et leurs beaux ouvrages ne servent de rien; eux-mêmes en sont témoins, mais ils ne voient ni ne comprennent, aussi seront-ils confondus.
10 Who hath fashioned a GOD, Oran image, hath molten? It cannot profit!
Qui donc va façonner un dieu, mouler une statue, incapables de se rendre utiles?
11 Lo! all his partners, turn pale, Even, the artificers themselves, are of the sons of earth, —Let them gather themselves together—all of them. Let them take their stand, Let them dread, and turn pale, together!
Certes tous ses adeptes seront confondus, les artisans eux-mêmes ne sont que des mortels. Qu’ils s’assemblent tous, qu’ils comparaissent! Ils seront terrifiés et confondus ensemble.
12 As for the smith, [with his] cutting-tool, —When he hath wrought in the live coals, And, with hammers, hath fashioned it, —And hath wrought it with his strong arm, Anon he is hungry, and hath no strength, He hath drunk no water and so hath become faint!
L’Ouvrier qui travaille le fer manie une hache, attise les charbons, façonne la chose à coups de marteau; il y dépense toute la force de son bras, endure et la faim qui l’exténue et la soif qui l’épuise.
13 As for the carpenter, —He hath stretched out a line hath drawn it with a pencil, Hath made it with carving tools, With compasses, hath rounded it, —And so hath made it after the figure of a great man, After the beauty of a son of earth, that it may remain in a house!
L’Ouvrier qui travaille le bois étend le cordeau, dessine l’idole avec la craie, la polit avec le rabot et la proportionne à l’aide du compas; il la modèle d’après la forme humaine, magnifique simulacre d’homme, pour être à demeure fixe dans la maison!
14 When one was cutting him down cedars, Then took he a holm-tree and an oak, And secured them for himself, among the trees of the forest, —He planted a fir-tree and the pouring rain made it grow;
Il s’est coupé des cèdres, il a pris un rouvre et un chêne, en les choisissant vigoureux parmi les arbres de la forêt; il a planté des pins, que la pluie fait grandir.
15 So it serveth for a man to burn, And he hath taken of the branches and warmed himself, Also he kindleth a fire, and baketh bread, —Also he maketh a GOD, and hath bowed himself down, Hath made of it a carved image, and adored it:
Tout cela sert à l’homme de combustible; il en prend une partie pour se chauffer, une autre pour allumer le feu qui doit faire cuire son pain; puis encore il fait un dieu et tombe à genoux, en taille une idole et se courbe devant elle!
16 The half thereof, hath he burned in the fire, Over half thereof, he eateth flesh, He roasteth roast, that he may be satisfied, —Also he warmeth himself, and saith, Aha, I am warm, I have seen a blaze;
La moitié donc, il la livre au feu; sur cette moitié il met rôtir sa viande, la mange et s’en rassasie; ou bien il s’y chauffe et dit: "Ah! la bonne chaleur! Je sens la flamme!"
17 And the residue thereof, Into a GOD, he maketh, Into his carved image, —Adoreth it, and boweth down and prayeth unto it, And saith Deliver me, for, my GOD, thou art!
Et puis le reste, il en fait un dieu, son idole; il l’adore, il se prosterne, il lui adresse des prières et s’écrie: "Protège-moi, car, tu es mon Dieu!"
18 They have not taken note, neither can they perceive, —He hath besmeared—past seeing—their eyes, Past understanding, their hearts;
Ils ne savent pas, ils ne comprennent pas! Non, leur œil est trop obtus pour voir, leur cœur pour comprendre.
19 And no one reflecteth—There is neither knowledge nor discernment—to say, Half thereof, have I burned up in the fire Moreover also I have baked, on the coals thereof, bread, I roasted flesh, and have been eating, —And of the remainder thereof, an abomination, shall I make? And, to a log of wood, shall I pay adoration?
Pas un ne réfléchit en lui-même, n’a de sens ni de raison pour dire: "J’Ai employé la moitié à faire du feu, et sur ses charbons j’ai cuit le pain, rôti la viande dont je me nourris, et du restant je ferais une impure idole, je rendrais hommage à une souche de bois!"
20 He is feeding on ashes, A deluded heart, hath turned him aside, —And he cannot deliver his own soul nor say, Is there not a falsehood in my right hand?
Il se repaît de cendres, son cœur abusé l’égare, il ne sait pas s’affranchir lui-même en disant: "N’Est-ce pas le mensonge qu’étreint ma main?"
21 Remember these things, O Jacob, And, Israel, —for, my Servant, thou art, —I have fashioned thee, a Servant of mine, thou art.
Songe à ceci, Jacob, et toi, ô Israël, car tu es mon serviteur; je t’ai formé expressément, toi, pour être mon serviteur: Israël, ne m’oublie pas!
22 O Israel, thou shalt not be forgotten of me, I have wiped out, As with a thick cloud, thy transgressions, And as with a broad cloud, thy sins, —Return unto me, for I have redeemed thee.
J’Ai dissipé tes méfaits comme un brouillard et tes péchés comme un nuage. Reviens à moi, je suis ton libérateur.
23 Shout in triumph ye heavens for Yahweh, hath effectually wrought. Shout, O ye underparts of the earth, Ring out, Ye mountains, into cries of triumph, Thou forest, and every tree therein, —For, Yahweh, hath redeemed, Jacob, And in Israel, will he get himself glory.
Chantez, cieux, car l’Eternel a agi; résonnez, profondeurs de la terre; éclatez en cris de joie, montagnes et vous, forêts, avec tous vos arbres! Car l’Eternel a délivré Jacob, et il s’est rendu glorieux en Israël.
24 Thus, saith Yahweh Who hath redeemed thee, Who hath fashioned thee from birth, —I—Yahweh, am the maker of all things, Stretching out the heavens, alone, Spreading forth the earth, of myself;
Ainsi parle l’Eternel, ton libérateur, qui t’a formé dès le sein maternel: "Je suis l’Eterne!, L’Auteur de toute chose, je déploie les cieux à moi seul, j’étends la terre, et personne ne me seconde.
25 Frustrating the signs of praters, And, diviners, he confoundeth, —Turning wise men backwards, And their knowledge, he maketh folly;
J’Annule les présages des diseurs de mensonges, je frappe de démence les devins, force les sages de reculer et fais taxer de folie leur science.
26 Establishing the word of his Servant, And the counsel of his Messengers, he maketh good, —Who saith of Jerusalem—She shall be inhabited! And of the cities of Judah—They shall be built! And the ruins thereof, will I set up!
J’Accomplis la parole de mon serviteur et fais aboutir le dessein de mes mandataires, je dis de Jérusalem "Elle sera habitée!" et des villes de Juda: "Elles seront rebâties, je relèverai leurs ruines!"
27 Who saith to the deep—Be dry and Thy rivers, will I drain!
Je dis aux eaux profondes: "Desséchez-vous!" Je tarirai tes fleuves.
28 Who saith of Cyrus—My Shepherd! and All my pleasure, shall he make good Even saying of Jerusalem—She shall be built! And of the temple—Be her foundation laid!
Je dis à Cyrus: "Tu es mon berger!" Lui, il exécutera ma volonté tout entière quand il dira à Jérusalem: "Sois rebâtie!" et au sanctuaire: "Sois fondé!"
