Hebrews 11
1 But faith is, of things hoped for, a confidence, of facts, a conviction, when they are not seen;
Or la foi est la substance des choses qu’on espère, une conviction de celles qu’on ne voit point.
2 For, thereby, well-attested were the ancients.
C’est pour l’avoir possédée que les anciens ont obtenu un bon témoignage.
3 By faith, we understand the ages to have been fitted together, by declaration of God, —to the end that, not out of things appearing, should that which is seen, have come into existence. (aiōn g165)
C’est par la foi que nous reconnaissons que le monde a été formé par la parole de Dieu, en sorte que les choses que l’on voit n’ont pas été faites de choses visibles. (aiōn g165)
4 By faith, a fuller sacrifice, did Abel, offer unto God, than Cain, —through which, he received witness that he was righteous, there being a witnessing upon his gifts, by God; and, through it, though he died, he yet is speaking.
C’est par la foi qu’Abel offrit à Dieu un sacrifice plus excellent que celui de Caïn; c’est par elle qu’il fut déclaré juste, Dieu approuvant ses offrandes, et c’est par elle que, mort, il parle toujours.
5 By faith, Enoch was translated, so as not to see death, and was not found, because that, God, had translated him; for, before the translation, he had received witness that he had become well-pleasing unto God; —
C’est par la foi qu’Énoch fut enlevé sans qu’il eût subi la mort: « on ne le trouva plus, parce que Dieu l’avait enlevé »; car avant cet enlèvement, il avait reçu ce témoignage « qu’il avait plu à Dieu. »
6 But, apart from faith, it is impossible to be well-pleasing; for he that approacheth unto God—must needs have faith, that he is, and that, to them who seek him out, a rewarder he becometh.
Or, sans la foi, il est impossible de plaire à Dieu; car il faut que celui qui s’approche de Dieu croie qu’il existe, et qu’il est le rémunérateur de ceux qui le cherchent.
7 By faith, Noah, having received intimation concerning the things not yet seen, filled with reverence, prepared an ark to the saving of his house—through which he condemned the world, and, of the righteousness by way of faith, became heir.
C’est par la foi que Noé, divinement averti des événements qu’on ne voyait pas encore, construisit, avec une pieuse crainte, une arche pour sauver sa famille; c’est par elle qu’il condamna le monde, et devint héritier de la justice qui s’obtient par la foi.
8 By faith, being called, Abraham obeyed—to come forth into a place he was destined to receive for an inheritance; and he came forth, not well knowing whither he was coming.
C’est par la foi qu’Abraham, obéissant à l’appel de Dieu, partit pour un pays qu’il devait recevoir en héritage, et se mit en chemin sans savoir où il allait.
9 By faith, he sojourned in the land of promise, as a foreign land, in tents, dwelling, along with Isaac and Jacob, the joint-heirs of the same promise;
C’est par la foi qu’il séjourna dans la terre promise, comme dans une terre étrangère, habitant sous des tentes, ainsi qu’Isaac et Jacob, héritiers comme lui de la même promesse.
10 For he was awaiting the city having foundations, whose architect and builder is, God.
Car il attendait la cité aux solides fondements, dont Dieu est l’architecte et le constructeur.
11 By faith, even Sarah herself, received power for founding a seed, even beyond the season of life’s prime, —seeing that, faithful, she reckoned, him that had promised;
C’est par la foi que Sara, elle aussi, qui n’était plus dans l’âge de concevoir, en reçut la vertu, parce qu’elle crut à la fidélité de Celui qui en avait fait la promesse.
12 Wherefore, even from one, were born, and, as to these things, one who had become dead, —like the stars of the heaven, for multitude, and as the sand that is by the lip of the sea, that cannot be numbered.
C’est pourquoi, d’un seul homme, déjà comme mort, sortit une postérité aussi nombreuse que les étoiles du ciel, et que les grains de sable innombrables qui sont sur le bord de la mer.
13 In faith, all these died—not bearing away the promises, but, from afar, beholding and saluting them, and confessing that, strangers and sojourners, were they upon the land.
C’est dans la foi que ces patriarches sont tous morts, sans avoir reçu l’effet des promesses; mais ils l’ont vu et salué de loin, confessant « qu’ils étaient étrangers et voyageurs sur la terre. »
14 For, they who such things as these are saying, make it clear that, of a paternal home they are in quest;
Ceux qui parlent ainsi montrent bien qu’ils cherchent une patrie.
15 And, if indeed of that they had been mindful, from which they had come out, they might, in that case, have had an opportunity, to return;
Et certes, s’ils avaient entendu par là celle d’où ils étaient sortis, ils auraient eu le moyen d’y retourner.
16 But, now, after a better one, are they reaching, that is, a heavenly; wherefore God is not ashamed of them, to be invoked as, their God, —for he hath prepared for them, a city.
Mais c’est à une patrie meilleure, à la patrie du ciel, que tendent leurs aspirations. C’est pourquoi Dieu n’a pas honte de s’appeler « leur Dieu », car il leur a préparé une cité.
17 By faith, Abraham, when tested, offered up Isaac, and, the only-begotten, would he have offered up, who the promises had accepted, —
C’est par la foi qu’Abraham mis à l’épreuve, offrit Isaac en sacrifice. Ainsi celui qui avait reçu les promesses,
18 Even him of whom it had been said—In Isaac, shall there be called to thee, a seed:
et à qui il avait été dit: « C’est d’Isaac que naîtra ta postérité », offrit ce fils unique,
19 Accounting that, even from among the dead, God, was able, to raise [him], —whence, even in similitude, he bare him away.
estimant que Dieu est assez puissant pour ressusciter même les morts; aussi le recouvra-t-il comme en figure.
20 By faith, even concerning things to come, did Isaac bless Jacob and Esau.
C’est par la foi qu’Isaac bénit Jacob et Esaü, en vue des choses à venir.
21 By faith, Jacob, when about to die, blessed each of the sons of Joseph; and bowed in worship on the top of his staff.
C’est par la foi que Jacob mourant bénit chacun des fils de Joseph et qu’il « se prosterna appuyé sur le sommet de son sceptre ».
22 By faith, Joseph, when drawing to his end—concerning the exodus of the sons of Israel, called to remembrance, and, concerning his bones, gave commandment.
C’est par la foi que Joseph, près de sa fin, fit mention de la sortie des fils d’Israël, et qu’il donna des ordres au sujet de ses restes.
23 By faith, Moses, when born—was hid three months by his parents, because, they saw, that, goodly, was, the child, and were not affrighted, at the decree of the king.
C’est par la foi que Moïse à sa naissance, fut caché pendant trois mois par ses parents, parce qu’ils virent que l’enfant était beau, et qu’ils ne craignirent pas l’édit du roi.
24 By faith, Moses, when grown up—refused to be called the son of a daughter of a Pharaoh,
C’est par la foi que Moïse, devenu grand, renonça au titre de fils de la fille de Pharaon,
25 Rather choosing—to be jointly suffering ill-treatment with the people of God, than, for a season, to be having, sins enjoyment;
aimant mieux d’être maltraité avec le peuple de Dieu, que de jouir des délices passagères du péché:
26 Accounting—as greater riches than Egypt’s treasures, the reproach of the Anointed One; for he was looking away unto the recompense.
il considéra l’opprobre du Christ comme une richesse plus grande que les trésors de l’Égypte; car il avait les yeux fixés sur la récompense.
27 By faith, he forsook Egypt—not put in fear of the wrath of the king; for, as seeing him who cannot be seen, he persevered.
C’est par la foi qu’il quitta l’Égypte, sans redouter la colère du roi; car il tint ferme, comme s’il voyait celui qui est invisible.
28 By faith, he hath kept the passover and the besmearing of the blood, lest, he that was destroying the first-born, should be touching them.
C’est par la foi qu’il célébra la Pâque et fit l’aspersion du sang, afin que l’exterminateur des premiers-nés ne touchât pas à ceux des Israélites.
29 By faith, they passed through the Red Sea, as over dry land, —which the Egyptians, seizing an attempt to do, were swallowed up.
C’est par la foi qu’ils passèrent la mer Rouge comme une terre ferme, tandis que les Égyptiens qui tentèrent le passage furent engloutis.
30 By faith, the walls of Jericho, fell, having been surrounded for seven days.
C’est par la foi que les murailles de Jéricho tombèrent, après qu’on en eût fait le tour pendant sept jours.
31 By faith, Rahab the harlot perished not with them who refused to yield, she having welcomed the spies with peace.
C’est par la foi que Rahab la courtisane ne périt pas avec les rebelles, pour avoir donné aux espions une sûre hospitalité.
32 And what more can I say? For, time, will fail me while I go on telling—concerning Gideon, Barak, Sampson, Jephthah, David also, and Samuel, and the prophets, —
Et que dirai-je encore? Le temps me manquerait si je voulais parler aussi de Gédéon, de Barac, de Samson, de Jephté, de David, de Samuel et des prophètes:
33 Who, through faith—prevailed in contest over kingdoms, wrought righteousness, attained unto promises, shut the mouths of lions,
par la foi, ils ont conquis des royaumes, exercé la justice, obtenu l’effet des promesses, fermé la gueule des lions,
34 Quenched the power of fire, escaped the mouths of the sword, were made powerful from weakness, became mighty in battle, overturned, camps of aliens;
éteint la violence du feu, échappé au tranchant de l’épée, triomphé de la maladie, déployé leur vaillance à la guerre, mis en fuite des armées ennemis;
35 Women received, by resurrection, their dead; but, others, were put to the rack, not accepting redemption, that, unto a better resurrection, they might attain:
par eux des femmes ont recouvré leurs morts ressuscités. Les uns ont péri dans les tortures, refusant la délivrance afin d’obtenir une meilleure résurrection;
36 Others, again, of mockings and scourgings, received trial, nay! further, of bonds and imprisonments:
d’autres ont souffert les moqueries et les verges; de plus, les chaînes et les cachots;
37 They were stoned, were pierced through, were sawn asunder, by murder, with a sword, died, went about in sheep-skins, in goat-hides, —being in want, suffering tribulation, enduring ill-treatment:
ils ont été lapidés, sciés, éprouvés; ils sont morts par le tranchant de l’épée; ils ont erré çà et là, couverts de peaux de brebis et de chèvres, dénués de tout, persécutés, maltraités,
38 Of whom the world, was not worthy—upon deserts, wandering, and mountains, and in caves, —and in the caverns of the earth.
— eux dont le monde n’était pas digne; — ils ont été errants dans les déserts et les montagnes, dans les cavernes et dans les antres de la terre.
39 And, these all, though they obtained witness through their faith, yet bare not away, the promise:
Cependant eux tous que leur foi a rendus recommandables, n’ont pas obtenu l’objet de la promesse
40 God, for us, something better providing, —that, not apart from us, should they be made, perfect.
parce que Dieu nous a fait une condition meilleure pour qu’ils n’obtinssent pas sans nous la perfection du bonheur.
