Genesis 42
1 Then saw Jacob that there was corn in Egypt, —and Jacob said to his sons, Wherefore look ye one at another?
Or, Jacob, ayant vu qu'il y avait vente en Égypte, dit à ses fils: D'où vient votre nonchalance?
2 And he said, Lo I have heard that there is corn in Egypt, —Go down thither and buy corn for us from thence, that we may live and not die.
Je sais qu'il y a du blé en Égypte; descendez-y et achetez-nous un peu de blé, afin que nous vivions et ne mourions pas.
3 So Joseph’s ten brethren went down, —to buy corn from the Egyptians;
Et les dix frères de Joseph allèrent acheter du blé en Égypte.
4 but, Benjamin, Joseph’s own brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren, —for he said, Lest there befall him any mischief.
Mais Jacob n'envoya pas, avec ses frères, Benjamin, le frère de Joseph: Car, dit-il, j'ai peur qu'une maladie ne le prenne en chemin.
5 Thus came in the sons of Israel, to buy corn in the midst of them that came—for the famine was in the land of Canaan.
Les fils de Jacob allèrent donc acheter, en compagnie de ceux qui partaient: car la famine était en la terre de Chanaan.
6 Now, Joseph—he, it was, that was in power over the land, he, it was that was selling corn to all the people of the land, —so Joseph’s brethren came in, and bowed themselves down to him, with their faces to the earth.
Or, Joseph était le chef de la contrée, et il vendait à tous les peuples de la terre; les frères de Joseph, étant arrivés, se prosternèrent devant lui, la face contre terre.
7 And Joseph beheld his brethren and recognised them, —and made himself a stranger unto them and spake with them harsh things and said unto them—Whence have ye come in? And they said, From the land of Canaan, to buy food.
À la vue de ses frères, Joseph les reconnut; mais il ne se fit point connaître à eux; il leur parla même avec sévérité, et il leur dit: D'où venez-vous? Et ils dirent: De la terre de Chanaan, acheter du blé.
8 And Joseph recognised his brethren, —whereas they, recognised him not.
Joseph reconnaissait bien ses frères, mais ils ne le reconnaissaient point.
9 And Joseph remembered the dreams which he had dreamed regarding them, —so he said unto them—Spies, are, ye! to see the nakedness of the land, have ye come in!
Il se souvint alors des songes qu'il avait eus, et il leur dit: Vous êtes des espions; vous êtes venus épier ce qui se fait en la contrée.
10 And they said unto him, Nay, my lord, —but, thy servants, are come to buy food.
Et ils dirent: Non, seigneur, tes serviteurs sont venus acheter des vivres.
11 All of us, are, sons of one man, —honest men, are we: thy servants are not, spies.
Nous sommes tous fils d'un seul homme, nous sommes pacifiques, et tes serviteurs ne sont pas des espions.
12 And he said unto him, —Nay! but, the nakedness of the land, are ye come in to see.
Non, reprit-il, vous êtes venus pour voir ce qui se fait en la contrée.
13 And they said: We, thy twelve servants, are, brethren, sons of one man in the and of Canaan, —and lo! the youngest: is with our father this day, and, the one, is not!
Et ils dirent: Tes serviteurs étaient douze frères en la terre de Chanaan; le plus jeune, est aujourd'hui avec notre père, et l'autre ne vit plus.
14 And Joseph said unto them, —The very thing, that I spake unto you, saying—Spies, are, ye.
Joseph leur dit: C'est bien cela, c'est ce que je vous ai dit: vous êtes des espions;
15 Hereby, shall ye be proved, —By the life of Pharaoh, ye shall not go forth from hence, save only by the coming in of your youngest brother hither.
C'est par là que vous serez reconnus. Par la santé du Pharaon! vous ne sortirez pas d'ici que votre frère le plus jeune n'y soit venu.
16 Send—from among you—one that he may fetch your brother, but be, ye, held as prisoners, that your words may be proved whether, truth, is with you, —and, if not, by the life of Pharaoh, surely, spies, ye are.
Envoyez l'un de vous et qu'il amène votre frère; en attendant, vous allez être retenus jusqu'à ce que vos paroles soient confirmées, et que l'on sache si vous dites vrai ou non. Si vous avez menti, par la santé du Pharaon! vous êtes des espions.
17 So he drew them all together into ward, for three days.
Et il les mit en prison trois jours.
18 And Joseph said unto them on the third day, This, do and live, —God himself, do, I, revere.
Le troisième jour venu, il leur dit: Faites ce que je vais vous dire, et vous vivrez, car je crains Dieu.
19 If ye, are, honest men, one brother of you shall be kept as a prisoner in your house of ward, —but, ye, go, take in corn for the famine of your houses;
Si vous êtes pacifiques, que l'un de vous reste en prison, et que les autres partent; allez, emportez votre blé,
20 and your youngest brother, shall ye bring in unto me, that your words may be confirmed, and ye die not. And they did so.
Et amenez-moi votre frère le plus jeune: ainsi vos paroles seront confirmées; si vous vous y refusez, apprêtez-vous à mourir. Et ils firent comme il avait dit.
21 And they said each man unto his brother—Verily guilty, we are, respecting our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul when he appealed unto us for favour and we hearkened not, —therefore, hath come in unto us this distress.
Sur quoi, chacun dit à son frère: Oui, c'est mérité, car nous sommes coupables au sujet de notre frère; nous n'avons eu aucun souci de l'affliction de son âme; lorsqu'il nous suppliait, nous ne l'avons pas écouté; c'est pourquoi cette affliction est tombée sur nous.
22 And Reuben responded to them, saying—Spake I not unto you saying, Do not sin against the child! And ye hearkened not? His very blood, therefore lo! it is required.
Ruben ajouta: Ne vous ai-je point dit: Ne maltraitez pas l'enfant? Mais vous n'avez rien voulu entendre, et voilà que son sang est vengé.
23 But, they, knew not that Joseph was hearkening, —for, the interpreter, was between them.
Ils parlaient entre eux et ne savaient pas que Joseph les entendait, car il s'était servi avec eux d'un interprète.
24 So he turned away from them, and wept, —then came back unto them and spake unto them, and took away from them Simeon, and bound him prisoner before their eyes.
Et Joseph, s'étant éloigné, pleura; revenu auprès d'eux, il leur parla, prit Siméon, et l'enchaîna devant eux.
25 Then commanded Joseph that their bags should be filled with corn, and their silver be returned each man’s into his sack, and provision be given for the journey, —and it was done to them thus.
Cependant, Joseph ordonna qu'on remplit leurs sacs, que dans chacun on remît l'argent, et qu'on leur donnât des vivres pour la route; et il fut fait comme il avait dit.
26 So they lifted up their corn on their asses, —and went their way, from thence.
Après avoir chargé le blé sur leurs ânes, ils se mirent en route.
27 And the first opened his sack to give fodder to his ass at the inn, —and beheld his silver, yea there, it was in the mouth of his sack!
Or, l'un d'eux, ayant délié son sac pour faire manger les ânes à la première halte, vit, à l'entrée du sac, sa bourse d'argent.
28 So he said unto his brethren My silver hath been returned, yea verily, there it is in my sack! Then went forth their heart and they turned trembling—each man unto his brother saying. What is this that God hath done to us?
Et il dit à ses frères: L'argent m'a été rendu, le voici dans mon sac; leur cœur fut saisi, ils se troublèrent; car ils se disaient les uns aux autres: Pourquoi Dieu nous a-t-il fait cela?
29 So they came in unto Jacob their father to the land of Canaan, —and told him all that had befallen them saying:
Arrivés chez Jacob, leur père, en la terre de Chanaan, ils lui racontèrent tout ce qui leur était advenu, disant:
30 The man that is lord of the land spake unto us harsh things, —and then delivered us up. as spies of the land.
L'homme maître de la contrée nous a parlé sévèrement, et il nous a emprisonnés comme espions.
31 And we said unto him Honest men, are, we, —we are not spies!
Nous lui avons dit: Nous sommes pacifiques, nous ne sommes point des espions.
32 Twelve brethren, are, we, sons of our father, —the one, is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.
Nous étions douze frères, fils du même père; l'un ne vit plus, et le plus jeune est aujourd'hui avec notre père, en la terre de Chanaan.
33 Then said the man the lord of the land unto us, Hereby, shall I get to know that honest men, ye are, —One brother of you, leave ye remaining with me, and corn for the famine of your houses, take ye and go your way;
Mais l'homme maître de la contrée nous a dit: Vous me donnez vous-mêmes le moyen de savoir si vous n'êtes pas des espions, et si vous êtes pacifiques: laissez-moi l'un de vous, et, prenant les vivres que vous avez achetés pour votre maison, partez.
34 And bring ye in your youngest brother unto me, So must I get to know that ye are, not spies, but are honest men: Your brother, will I give up to you, and with the land, shall ye traffic.
Allez me chercher votre plus jeune frère: je connaîtrai alors que vous n'êtes point des espions, mais que vous êtes pacifiques; je vous rendrai votre frère, et vous pourrez négocier en ce pays.
35 And it came to pass when, they, were emptying their, sacks then lo! each man’s bundle of silver, was in his sack, —and when they beheld their bundles of silver—they and their father, they were afraid,
Or, lorsqu'ils vidèrent leurs sacs, chacun trouva dans son sac sa bourse d'argent; ils virent les bourses d'argent, leur père les vit aussi, et ils eurent crainte.
36 And Jacob their father said unto them, Me, have ye bereaved, —Joseph, is not, and, Simeon, is not, and Benjamin, ye would take! Against me, have happened all these things.
Sur quoi Jacob, leur père, s'écria: Vous m'avez privé de mes enfants. Joseph n'est plus; Siméon n'est plus; me prendrez-vous aussi Benjamin? C'est sur moi que tout tombe.
37 Then spake Reuben unto his father saying, My two sons, shalt thou put to death, if I bring him not unto thee, —Come give him up upon my hand, and I, will restore him unto thee.
Ruben répondit à son père: Fais mourir mes deux fils si je ne te ramène le tien; remets-le entre mes mains, et je le reconduirai près de toi.
38 And he said, My son shall not go down with you, —For, his brother, is dead and, he alone, is left, and as surely as there befall him any mischief by the way wherein ye go, so surely shall ye bring down my grey hairs with sorrow unto hades. (Sheol h7585)
Mais Jacob dit: Mon fils ne partira pas avec vous; son frère est mort, celui-ci seul m'est resté; une maladie le prendra dans le chemin où vous irez, et, de tristesse, vous ferez descendre ma vieillesse au sein de la terre. (Sheol h7585)
