Genesis 42
1 Then saw Jacob that there was corn in Egypt, —and Jacob said to his sons, Wherefore look ye one at another?
Et Jacob vit qu’il y avait du blé en Égypte; et Jacob dit à ses fils: Pourquoi vous regardez-vous les uns les autres?
2 And he said, Lo I have heard that there is corn in Egypt, —Go down thither and buy corn for us from thence, that we may live and not die.
Et il dit: Voici, j’ai appris qu’il y a du blé en Égypte; descendez-y, et achetez-nous-en là, afin que nous vivions, et que nous ne mourions pas.
3 So Joseph’s ten brethren went down, —to buy corn from the Egyptians;
Et dix frères de Joseph descendirent pour acheter du blé en Égypte;
4 but, Benjamin, Joseph’s own brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren, —for he said, Lest there befall him any mischief.
mais Jacob n’envoya pas Benjamin, le frère de Joseph, avec ses frères, car il disait: De peur qu’un accident ne lui arrive!
5 Thus came in the sons of Israel, to buy corn in the midst of them that came—for the famine was in the land of Canaan.
Et les fils d’Israël allèrent pour acheter du blé, parmi ceux qui allaient; car la famine était dans le pays de Canaan.
6 Now, Joseph—he, it was, that was in power over the land, he, it was that was selling corn to all the people of the land, —so Joseph’s brethren came in, and bowed themselves down to him, with their faces to the earth.
Et Joseph était gouverneur du pays; il vendait le blé à tout le peuple du pays. Et les frères de Joseph vinrent, et se prosternèrent devant lui la face contre terre.
7 And Joseph beheld his brethren and recognised them, —and made himself a stranger unto them and spake with them harsh things and said unto them—Whence have ye come in? And they said, From the land of Canaan, to buy food.
Et Joseph vit ses frères, et les reconnut; et il fit l’étranger vis-à-vis d’eux, et leur parla durement, et leur dit: D’où venez-vous? Et ils dirent: Du pays de Canaan, pour acheter des vivres.
8 And Joseph recognised his brethren, —whereas they, recognised him not.
Et Joseph reconnut ses frères; et eux ne le reconnurent pas.
9 And Joseph remembered the dreams which he had dreamed regarding them, —so he said unto them—Spies, are, ye! to see the nakedness of the land, have ye come in!
Et Joseph se souvint des songes qu’il avait songés à leur sujet, et il leur dit: Vous êtes des espions; c’est pour voir les lieux ouverts du pays que vous êtes venus.
10 And they said unto him, Nay, my lord, —but, thy servants, are come to buy food.
Et ils lui dirent: Non, mon seigneur; mais tes serviteurs sont venus pour acheter des vivres.
11 All of us, are, sons of one man, —honest men, are we: thy servants are not, spies.
Nous sommes tous fils d’un seul homme; nous sommes d’honnêtes gens; tes serviteurs ne sont pas des espions.
12 And he said unto him, —Nay! but, the nakedness of the land, are ye come in to see.
Et il leur dit: Non; mais vous êtes venus pour voir les lieux ouverts du pays.
13 And they said: We, thy twelve servants, are, brethren, sons of one man in the and of Canaan, —and lo! the youngest: is with our father this day, and, the one, is not!
Et ils dirent: Tes serviteurs étaient douze frères; nous sommes fils d’un seul homme, au pays de Canaan; et voici, le plus jeune est aujourd’hui avec notre père, et l’un n’est plus.
14 And Joseph said unto them, —The very thing, that I spake unto you, saying—Spies, are, ye.
Et Joseph leur dit: C’est ce que je vous disais, en disant: Vous êtes des espions.
15 Hereby, shall ye be proved, —By the life of Pharaoh, ye shall not go forth from hence, save only by the coming in of your youngest brother hither.
Par ceci vous serez mis à l’épreuve: Vie du Pharaon! si vous sortez d’ici, à moins que votre jeune frère ne vienne ici!
16 Send—from among you—one that he may fetch your brother, but be, ye, held as prisoners, that your words may be proved whether, truth, is with you, —and, if not, by the life of Pharaoh, surely, spies, ye are.
Envoyez l’un de vous, et qu’il aille chercher votre frère; et vous, vous serez liés, et vos paroles seront mises à l’épreuve, [pour voir] si la vérité est avec vous: sinon, vie du Pharaon! certainement vous êtes des espions.
17 So he drew them all together into ward, for three days.
Et il les fit mettre ensemble sous garde pendant trois jours.
18 And Joseph said unto them on the third day, This, do and live, —God himself, do, I, revere.
Et, le troisième jour, Joseph leur dit: Faites ceci, et vous vivrez; moi je crains Dieu.
19 If ye, are, honest men, one brother of you shall be kept as a prisoner in your house of ward, —but, ye, go, take in corn for the famine of your houses;
Si vous êtes d’honnêtes gens, l’un de vous, qui êtes frères, sera lié dans la maison où vous avez été sous garde; et vous, allez, emportez du blé pour la faim de vos maisons;
20 and your youngest brother, shall ye bring in unto me, that your words may be confirmed, and ye die not. And they did so.
et amenez-moi le plus jeune de vos frères, et vos paroles se trouveront vraies; et vous ne mourrez pas. Et ils firent ainsi.
21 And they said each man unto his brother—Verily guilty, we are, respecting our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul when he appealed unto us for favour and we hearkened not, —therefore, hath come in unto us this distress.
Et ils se dirent l’un à l’autre: Certainement nous sommes coupables à l’égard de notre frère; car nous avons vu la détresse de son âme quand il nous demandait grâce, et nous ne l’avons pas écouté; c’est pourquoi cette détresse est venue sur nous.
22 And Reuben responded to them, saying—Spake I not unto you saying, Do not sin against the child! And ye hearkened not? His very blood, therefore lo! it is required.
Et Ruben leur répondit, disant: Ne vous ai-je pas parlé, disant: Ne péchez pas contre l’enfant? Mais vous n’avez pas écouté; et aussi, voici, son sang est redemandé.
23 But, they, knew not that Joseph was hearkening, —for, the interpreter, was between them.
Et ils ne savaient pas que Joseph comprenait, car il y avait entre eux un interprète.
24 So he turned away from them, and wept, —then came back unto them and spake unto them, and took away from them Simeon, and bound him prisoner before their eyes.
Et il se détourna d’auprès d’eux, et pleura; et il revint vers eux, et leur parla, et prit d’avec eux Siméon, et le lia devant leurs yeux.
25 Then commanded Joseph that their bags should be filled with corn, and their silver be returned each man’s into his sack, and provision be given for the journey, —and it was done to them thus.
Et Joseph commanda de remplir de blé leurs sacs, et de leur remettre leur argent à chacun dans son sac, et de leur donner des provisions pour le chemin; et on leur fit ainsi.
26 So they lifted up their corn on their asses, —and went their way, from thence.
Et ils chargèrent leur blé sur leurs ânes, et s’en allèrent de là.
27 And the first opened his sack to give fodder to his ass at the inn, —and beheld his silver, yea there, it was in the mouth of his sack!
Et l’un [d’eux] ouvrit son sac pour donner à manger à son âne, dans le caravansérail, et il vit son argent, et voici, il était à l’ouverture de son sac.
28 So he said unto his brethren My silver hath been returned, yea verily, there it is in my sack! Then went forth their heart and they turned trembling—each man unto his brother saying. What is this that God hath done to us?
Et il dit à ses frères: Mon argent m’a été rendu; et même, le voici dans mon sac! Et le cœur leur manqua, et ils furent saisis de peur, se disant l’un à l’autre: Qu’est-ce que Dieu nous a fait?
29 So they came in unto Jacob their father to the land of Canaan, —and told him all that had befallen them saying:
Et ils vinrent vers Jacob, leur père, au pays de Canaan, et ils lui racontèrent tout ce qui leur était arrivé, disant:
30 The man that is lord of the land spake unto us harsh things, —and then delivered us up. as spies of the land.
L’homme, le seigneur du pays, nous a parlé durement, et nous a traités comme des espions du pays;
31 And we said unto him Honest men, are, we, —we are not spies!
et nous lui avons dit: Nous sommes d’honnêtes gens, nous ne sommes pas des espions.
32 Twelve brethren, are, we, sons of our father, —the one, is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.
Nous étions douze frères, fils de notre père: l’un n’est plus, et le plus jeune est aujourd’hui avec notre père au pays de Canaan.
33 Then said the man the lord of the land unto us, Hereby, shall I get to know that honest men, ye are, —One brother of you, leave ye remaining with me, and corn for the famine of your houses, take ye and go your way;
Et l’homme, le seigneur du pays, nous a dit: À ceci je connaîtrai que vous êtes d’honnêtes gens: Laissez auprès de moi l’un de vos frères, et prenez [du blé] pour la faim de vos maisons, et allez-vous-en.
34 And bring ye in your youngest brother unto me, So must I get to know that ye are, not spies, but are honest men: Your brother, will I give up to you, and with the land, shall ye traffic.
Et amenez-moi votre plus jeune frère, et je connaîtrai que vous n’êtes pas des espions, mais que vous êtes d’honnêtes gens: je vous donnerai votre frère, et vous trafiquerez dans le pays.
35 And it came to pass when, they, were emptying their, sacks then lo! each man’s bundle of silver, was in his sack, —and when they beheld their bundles of silver—they and their father, they were afraid,
Et il arriva, comme ils vidaient leurs sacs, que voici, chacun avait son paquet d’argent dans son sac; et ils virent, eux et leur père, leurs paquets d’argent, et ils eurent peur.
36 And Jacob their father said unto them, Me, have ye bereaved, —Joseph, is not, and, Simeon, is not, and Benjamin, ye would take! Against me, have happened all these things.
Et Jacob, leur père, leur dit: Vous m’avez privé d’enfants: Joseph n’est plus, et Siméon n’est plus, et vous voulez prendre Benjamin! Toutes ces choses sont contre moi.
37 Then spake Reuben unto his father saying, My two sons, shalt thou put to death, if I bring him not unto thee, —Come give him up upon my hand, and I, will restore him unto thee.
Et Ruben parla à son père, disant: Tu feras mourir mes deux fils si je ne te le ramène; remets-le entre mes mains, et je te le ramènerai.
38 And he said, My son shall not go down with you, —For, his brother, is dead and, he alone, is left, and as surely as there befall him any mischief by the way wherein ye go, so surely shall ye bring down my grey hairs with sorrow unto hades. (Sheol h7585)
Mais il dit: Mon fils ne descendra pas avec vous; car son frère est mort, et lui seul est resté; si quelque accident lui arrivait dans le chemin où vous allez, vous feriez descendre mes cheveux blancs avec douleur au shéol. (Sheol h7585)
