Genesis 4
1 Now, the man, having come to know Eve his wife, —she conceived and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a Man, even Yahweh!
Og Adam budde saman med Eva, kona si, og ho vart med barn, og åtte Kain. Då sagde ho: «Ein son hev eg fenge av Herren!»
2 And she went on to bear his brother, Abel, —and Abel became a feeder of sheep, whereas Cain, was a tiller of the round.
Sidan åtte ho Abel, bror hans. Og Abel vart sauehyrding, og Kain var jorddyrkar.
3 So it came to pass, after certain days, that Cain brought in of the fruit of the ground, a present to Yahweh:
Og det hende, då det leid av ei tid, at Kain bar fram åt Herren ei gåva av grøda på marki.
4 Abel, also, even, he, brought in of the firstlings of his sheep, and of their fat, and Yahweh approved of Abel and of his present;
Og Abel bar og fram ei gåva, og han gav av frumselambi or fenaden sin og feittet deira. Og Herren såg blidt til Abel og gåva hans,
5 but of Cain and his present, he approved not, —and it angered Cain greatly, and his countenance fell.
men ansa ikkje Kain og hans gåva. Då vart Kain brennande harm, og stirde nedfyre seg.
6 So then Yahweh said unto Cain, —Wherefore hath it angered thee, and wherefore hath thy countenance fallen?
Og Herren sagde til Kain: «Kvi er du harm, og kvi stend du og stirer nedfyre deg?
7 Shall it not, if thou do right, be lifted up? But if thou do not right, at the entrance a sin-bearer is lying, —Unto thee, moreover, shall be his longing, though, thou, rule over him.
Hev du godt i tankar, kann du ikkje då lyfta upp augo? Og hev du ikkje godt i tankar, so ligg syndi framfyre døri og lurer. Ho trår etter deg, men du lyt halda henne i age.»
8 And Cain said unto Abel his brother Let us go into the field And it came to pass when they were in the field that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
Og Kain sagde det med Abel, bror sin. Og det gjekk so til, medan dei var utpå marki, at Kain rauk på Abel, bror sin, og slo honom i hel.
9 Then said Yahweh unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said I know not, the keeper of my brother, am, I?
Då sagde Herren til Kain: «Kvar er Abel, bror din?» Og han svara: «Eg veit ikkje. Skal eg gjæta bror min?»
10 And he said, What hast thou done? With a voice, the shed-blood of thy brother is crying out to me from the ground,
Då sagde han: «Kva hev du gjort! Høyr, blodet åt bror din ropar til meg frå jordi!
11 Now therefore, accursed, art thou, —from the ground which hath opened her mouth, to receive the shed-blood of thy brother at thy hand.
Og no skal du vera bannlyst frå den jordi som let upp munnen og tok imot blodet åt bror din av di hand.
12 Though thou till the ground, it shall not go on to give its vigour to thee. A wanderer and a fugitive, shalt thou be in the earth.
Når du dyrkar marki, skal ho ikkje meir gjeva deg sin avle. Heimlaus og fredlaus skal du vera på jordi.»
13 And Cain said unto Yahweh—Greater is my punishment than I can bear.
Då sagde Kain til Herren: «Skuldi mi er større enn eg kann bera.
14 Lo! thou has driven me out, this day, from off the face of the ground And from thy face, shall I be hid, So shall I become a wanderer and a fugitive in the earth. And it shall come to pass, whosoever findeth me, will slay me.
Sjå, du driv meg i dag ut or landet, og eg lyt løyna meg for dine augo og vera heimlaus og fredlaus på jordi, og kven som finn meg, kjem til å slå meg i hel.»
15 And Yahweh said to him—Not so, whosoever slayeth Cain seven—fold, shall it be avenged. So Yahweh set, for Cain, a sign, that none finding him should smite him.
Då sagde Herren til honom: «Nei! for drep nokon Kain, so skal det hemnast sju gonger.» Og Herren gav Kain eit merke, so dei ikkje skulde slå honom i hel, kven som fann honom.
16 So Cain went forth from the presence of Yahweh, —and dwelt in the land of Nod, eastward of Eden.
So hadde Kain seg utor Herrens augo, og busette seg i eit land som heiter Nod, austanfor Eden.
17 And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived, and bare Enoch, —Now it happened that he was building a city, so he called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.
Og Kain budde saman med kona si, og ho vart med barn, og åtte Hanok. Sidan tok han seg til å byggja ein by, og kalla byen Hanok, etter son sin.
18 And there was born to Enoch Irad, and, Irad, begat Mehujael, —and Mehujael, begat Methusael, —and Methusael, begat Lamech.
Og Hanok vart far til Irad; og Irad fekk sonen Mehujael, og Mehujael fekk sonen Metusael, og Metusael fekk sonen Lamek.
19 And Lamech took to himself two wives, —the name of the one, was Adah, and, the name of the second Zillah.
Og Lamek tok seg tvo konor. Den eine heitte Ada, og den andre heitte Silla.
20 And Adah bare Jabal, —he, was father of such as dwell in tents, and have cattle;
Og Ada åtte sonen Jabal. Frå honom er dei ætta dei som bur i tjeldbuder og held buskap.
21 and, the name of his brother, was Jubal, —he, was father of everyone handling lyre and flute,
Og bror hans heitte Jubal. Frå honom er dei ætta all dei som spelar på harpa og fløyta.
22 And, as for Zillah, she also, bare Tubal-Cain, a sharpener of every cutting instrument of bronze and iron, —and, the sister of Tubal-Cain, was Naamah.
Og Silla åtte og ein son. Han vart kalla Tubalkain; og han smidde alle slag bitjarn, både av jarn og av kopar. Og syster åt Tubalkain heitte Na’ama.
23 Then said Lamech to his wives, Adah and Zillah! hear ye my voice, Ye wives of Lamech! give ear to my tale, For a man, have I slain in dealing my wounds, Yea, a youth, in smiting my blows:
Og Lamek kvad til konorne sine: «Ada og Silla, høyr mine ord, Lameks konor, lyd på mi røyst! Ein mann drep eg for kvart sår, og ein svein for kvar skråma eg fær.
24 If, sevenfold, be, the avenging of Cain, Then, of Lamech, seventy and seven.
For Kain skal sju gonger hemnast, men Lamek sju-ti og sju.»
25 And Adam again knew his wife, and she bare a son, and called his name Seth, —For God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, because Cain slew him!
Og Adam budde med kona si som han fyrr hadde gjort, og ho åtte ein son, og kalla honom Set. «For Gud hev sett meg ein annan son i staden hans Abel, » sagde ho, «for di Kain slo honom i hel.»
26 And to Seth—to him also, was born a son, and he called his name Enosh, —then, was a beginning made, to call on the name of Yahweh.
Og Set fekk og ein son, og kalla honom Enos. Då tok dei til å kalla på Herren.
