Genesis 39

1 Now, Joseph, was taken down to Egypt, —and Potiphar, courtier of Pharaoh, chief of the royal executioners, an Egyptian bought him, at the hand of the Ishmaelites, who had brought him down thither.

Or quand on eut amené Joseph en Egypte, Potiphar, Eunuque de Pharaon, Prévôt de l'hôtel, Egyptien, l'acheta de la main des Ismaélites, qui l'y avaient amené.

2 And it came to pass that Yahweh, was with Joseph, so that he became a prosperous man, —and was in the house of his lord the Egyptian.

Et l'Eternel était avec Joseph; et il prospéra, et demeura dans la maison de son maître Egyptien.

3 And his lord saw, that, Yahweh, was with him—and that whatsoever, he was doing, Yahweh, was causing to prosper in his hand.

Et son maître vit que l'Eternel [était] avec lui, et que l'Eternel faisait prospérer entre ses mains tout ce qu'il faisait.

4 So Joseph found favour in his eyes and waited upon him, —and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had, gave he into his hand.

C'est pourquoi Joseph trouva grâce devant son maître, et il le servait. Et [son maître] l'établit sur sa maison, et lui remit entre les mains tout ce qui lui appartenait.

5 And it came to pass from the time that he made him overseer in his house and over all that he had, that Yahweh blessed the house of the Egyptian, for Joseph’s sake, —yea it came to pass, that the blessing of Yahweh, was with all that he had, in the house and in the field;

Et il arriva que depuis qu'il l'eut établi sur sa maison, et sur tout ce qu'il avait, l'Eternel bénit la maison de cet Egyptien à cause de Joseph; et la bénédiction de l'Eternel fut sur toutes les choses qui étaient à lui, tant en la maison, qu'aux champs.

6 so that he left all that he had in the hand of Joseph, and took note with him of nothing, save only the bread which, he himself, was eating. And so it was that Joseph was comely in form and comely in countenance.

Il remit donc tout ce qui [était] à lui entre les mains de Joseph, sans entrer avec lui en connaissance d'aucune chose, sinon du pain qu'il mangeait. Or Joseph [était] de belle taille, et beau à voir.

7 And it came to pass after these things, that his lord’s wife lifted up her eyes unto Joseph, —and she said—Come! lie with me.

Et il arriva après ces choses, que la femme de son maître jeta les yeux sur Joseph, et lui dit: Couche avec moi.

8 And he refused and said unto his lord’s wife, Lo! my lord, taketh no note with me as to what is in the house, —but, all that pertaineth to him, hath he delivered into my hand:

Mais il le refusa, et dit à la femme de son maître: Voici, mon maître n'entre en aucune connaissance avec moi des choses qui sont dans sa maison, et il m'a remis entre les mains tout ce qui lui appartient.

9 There is no one greater in this house than I, neither hath he withheld from me anything, save only thyself in that thou, art his wife, —how, then could I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?

Il n'y a personne dans cette maison qui soit plus grand que moi, et il ne m'a rien défendu que toi, parce que tu es sa femme; et comment ferais-je un si grand mal, et pécherais-je contre Dieu?

10 And it came to pass, that although she Spake unto Joseph day after day, yet hearkened he not unto her to lie beside her to be with her.

Et quoiqu'elle [en] parlât à Joseph chaque jour, toutefois il ne lui accorda pas de coucher auprès d'elle, ni d'être avec elle.

11 And it came to pass, when, on a certain day, he went into the house to attend to his business, —and there was no man of the household, there in the house,

Mais il arriva, un jour qu'il était venu à la maison pour faire ce qu'il avait à faire, et qu'il n'y avait aucun des domestiques dans la maison,

12 that she caught him by his garment, saying—Come! lie with me. Then left he his garment in her hand, and fled and gat forth outside,

Qu'elle le prit par sa robe, et lui dit: Couche avec moi. Mais il lui laissa sa robe entre les mains, s'enfuit, et sortit dehors.

13 And it came to pass when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, —and fled forth outside,

Et lorsqu'elle eut vu qu'il lui avait laissé sa robe entre les mains, et qu'il s'en était fui,

14 that she cried out to the men of her house and spake to them, saying, Look ye! he hath brought in to us a Hebrew man to insult us, —He came in unto me, to lie with me, so I cried out with a loud voice.

Elle appela les gens de sa maison, et leur parla, en disant: Voyez, on nous a amené un homme Hébreu pour se moquer de nous, il est venu à moi pour coucher avec moi; mais j'ai crié à haute voix.

15 And it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted high my voice, and cried out, then left he his garment beside me, and fled and gat forth outside.

Et sitôt qu'il a ouï que j'ai élevé ma voix, et que j'ai crié, il a laissé son vêtement auprès de moi, il s'est enfui, et est sorti dehors.

16 So she laid by his garment beside her, —until his lord should come into his house,

Et elle garda le vêtement de Joseph, jusqu'à ce que son maître fût revenu à la maison.

17 Then spake she unto him, according to these words, saying, —He hath been in unto me—the Hebrew servant whom thou didst bring in to us—to insult me.

Alors elle lui parla en ces mêmes termes, et dit: Le serviteur Hébreu que tu nous as amené, est venu à moi, pour se moquer de moi.

18 And it came to pass when I lifted high my voice and cried out, then left he his garment beside me, and fled outside.

Mais comme j'ai élevé ma voix, et que j'ai crié, il a laissé son vêtement auprès de moi, et s'en est fui.

19 And it came to pass, when his lord heard the words of his wife which she spake unto him saying, According to these words, hath thy servant done to me, Then was kindled his anger.

Et sitôt que le maître de [Joseph] eut entendu les paroles de sa femme, qui lui disait: Ton serviteur m'a fait ce que je t'ai dit, sa colère s'enflamma.

20 So Joseph’s lord took him and delivered him up to the prison: the place where, the prisoners of the king, were imprisoned, —so he was there, in the prison.

Et le maître de Joseph le prit, et le mit dans une étroite prison; dans l'endroit où les prisonniers du Roi étaient renfermés, et il fut là en prison.

21 And it came to pass that, Yahweh, was with Joseph, and extended unto him lovingkindness, —and gave him his favour in the eyes of the chief of the prison.

Mais l'Eternel fut avec Joseph; il étendit [sa] gratuité sur lui, et lui fit trouver grâce envers le maître de la prison.

22 So the chief of the prison delivered up, into Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison, —and of all that was doing there, he, was the doer.

Et le maître de la prison mit entre les mains de Joseph tous les prisonniers qui [étaient] dans la prison, et tout ce qu'il y avait à faire, il le faisait.

23 After nothing, was the chief of the prison looking, of whatever was in his hand, —in that Yahweh, was with him, and whatsoever, he was doing, Yahweh, was causing to prosper.

[Et] le maître de la prison ne revoyait rien de tout ce que [Joseph] avait entre ses mains; parce que l'Eternel était avec lui, et que l'Eternel faisait prospérer tout ce qu'il faisait.
