Genesis 28
1 Then Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, —and commanded him and said to him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan.
Isaac appela Jacob, le bénit, et lui donna cet ordre: Tu ne prendras pas une femme parmi les filles de Canaan.
2 Rise, go thy way to Padan-aram to the house of Bethuel, thy mother’s father, —and take thee from thence a wife, of the daughters of Laban, thy mother’s brother.
Lève-toi, va à Paddan-Aram, à la maison de Bethuel, père de ta mère, et prends-y une femme d’entre les filles de Laban, frère de ta mère.
3 And, GOD Almighty, bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, so shalt thou become a multitude of peoples.
Que le Dieu tout-puissant te bénisse, te rende fécond et te multiplie, afin que tu deviennes une multitude de peuples!
4 And may he give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee, —that thou mayest possess the land of thy sojournings, which God gave to Abraham.
Qu’il te donne la bénédiction d’Abraham, à toi et à ta postérité avec toi, afin que tu possèdes le pays où tu habites comme étranger, et qu’il a donné à Abraham!
5 So Isaac sent away Jacob, and he took his journey to Padan-aram, —unto Laban son of Bethuel, the Syrian, brother of Rebekah, mother of Jacob and Esau.
Et Isaac fit partir Jacob, qui s’en alla à Paddan-Aram, auprès de Laban, fils de Bethuel, l’Araméen, frère de Rebecca, mère de Jacob et d’Ésaü.
6 And Esau beheld that Isaac, when he blessed Jacob, and sent him to Padan-aram, to take to himself from thence a wife, that in blessing him, he laid command upon him, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan;
Ésaü vit qu’Isaac avait béni Jacob, et qu’il l’avait envoyé à Paddan-Aram pour y prendre une femme, et qu’en le bénissant il lui avait donné cet ordre: Tu ne prendras pas une femme parmi les filles de Canaan.
7 And that Jacob hearkened unto his father and unto his mother, —and took his journey to Padan-aram.
Il vit que Jacob avait obéi à son père et à sa mère, et qu’il était parti pour Paddan-Aram.
8 So then Esau beheld that displeasing, were the daughters of Caanan, —in the eyes of Isaac his father:
Ésaü comprit ainsi que les filles de Canaan déplaisaient à Isaac, son père.
9 Esau therefore went unto Ishmael, —and took Mahalath daughter of Ishmael son of Abraham sister of Nebaioth, to himself to wife, in addition to the wives that he had.
Et Ésaü s’en alla vers Ismaël. Il prit pour femme, outre les femmes qu’il avait, Mahalath, fille d’Ismaël, fils d’Abraham, et sœur de Nebajoth.
10 So Jacob went forth from Beer-sheba, and journeyed towards Haran.
Jacob partit de Beer-Schéba, et s’en alla à Charan.
11 And he lighted on a place, and tarried the night there, because the sun had gone in, —and he took of the stones of the place, and put for his pillow, and lay down in that place,
Il arriva dans un lieu où il passa la nuit; car le soleil était couché. Il y prit une pierre, dont il fit son chevet, et il se coucha dans ce lieu-là.
12 And he dreamed, and lo! a stairway, planted earthwards, with, its top, reaching towards the heavens, —and lo! messengers of God, ascending and descending thereon;
Il eut un songe. Et voici, une échelle était appuyée sur la terre, et son sommet touchait au ciel. Et voici, les anges de Dieu montaient et descendaient par cette échelle.
13 and lo! Yahweh, standing by him, —and he said, I, am Yahweh, God of Abraham thy father and God of Isaac, —The land whereon, thou, art lying, to thee, will I give it and to thy seed;
Et voici, l’Éternel se tenait au-dessus d’elle; et il dit: Je suis l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Abraham, ton père, et le Dieu d’Isaac. La terre sur laquelle tu es couché, je la donnerai à toi et à ta postérité.
14 And thy seed shall become as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt break forth westward and eastward, and northward and southward, —And all the families of the ground shall be blessed in thee and in thy seed.
Ta postérité sera comme la poussière de la terre; tu t’étendras à l’occident et à l’orient, au septentrion et au midi; et toutes les familles de la terre seront bénies en toi et en ta postérité.
15 Lo! then, I, am with thee, so will I keep thee in every place whithersoever thou mayest go, and will bring thee back unto this soil, —For I will not forsake thee until I have done that of which I have spoken to thee.
Voici, je suis avec toi, je te garderai partout où tu iras, et je te ramènerai dans ce pays; car je ne t’abandonnerai point, que je n’aie exécuté ce que je te dis.
16 And Jacob awoke from his sleep, and said. Surely, Yahweh was in this place, And I, knew it not.
Jacob s’éveilla de son sommeil et il dit: Certainement, l’Éternel est en ce lieu, et moi, je ne le savais pas!
17 And he feared and said, How fearful is this place! None other this, than the house of God! Nor this than the gate of the heavens
Il eut peur, et dit: Que ce lieu est redoutable! C’est ici la maison de Dieu, c’est ici la porte des cieux!
18 So Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone which he had put for his pillow, and put it for a pillar, —and poured out oil upon the top thereof;
Et Jacob se leva de bon matin; il prit la pierre dont il avait fait son chevet, il la dressa pour monument, et il versa de l’huile sur son sommet.
19 and called the name of that place—Beth-el, —nevertheless, Luz, was the name of the city, aforetime.
Il donna à ce lieu le nom de Béthel; mais la ville s’appelait auparavant Luz.
20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, —If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way whereon, I, am going, and give me bread to eat and raiment to put on;
Jacob fit un vœu, en disant: Si Dieu est avec moi et me garde pendant ce voyage que je fais, s’il me donne du pain à manger et des habits pour me vêtir,
21 and I come back in prosperity unto the house of my father, Then will Yahweh prove to be my God, —
et si je retourne en paix à la maison de mon père, alors l’Éternel sera mon Dieu;
22 And, this stone which I have put for a pillar, shall be the house of God, —And, of all which thou shalt give me, a tenth, will I tithe unto thee.
cette pierre, que j’ai dressée pour monument, sera la maison de Dieu; et je te donnerai la dîme de tout ce que tu me donneras.
