Genesis 24
1 Now, Abraham, was old, far gone in days, —and, Yahweh, had blessed Abraham, in all things.
Et Abraham était vieux, avancé en âge, et l'Éternel avait béni Abraham en toute chose.
2 So Abraham said unto his servant, elder of his house, ruler of all that he had, —Place, I pray thee thy hand under my thigh;
Alors Abraham dit à son serviteur, le plus ancien de sa maison, qui avait le gouvernement de tout ce qui lui appartenait: Pose ta main sous ma hanche,
3 that I may put thee on oath, by Yahweh God of the heavens and God of the earth—That thou wilt not take a wife for my son, from among the daughters of the Canaanites in the midst of whom, I, am dwelling:
afin que je t'adjure au nom de l'Éternel, Dieu des cieux et Dieu de la terre, de ne choisir pour la femme de mon fils aucune des filles des Cananéens au milieu desquels je demeure,
4 but unto my own land and unto my own kindred, wilt go, —So shalt thou take a wife for my son—for Isaac.
mais d'aller dans mon pays et dans ma patrie choisir une femme pour mon fils Isaac.
5 And the servant said unto him, Peradventure the woman may not be willing to follow me into this land, —May I take back thy son, into the land from whence thou camest?
Alors le serviteur lui dit: Peut-être la femme ne voudra-t-elle pas me suivre dans ce pays-ci: dois-je pour lors reconduire ton fils dans le pays d'où tu es sorti?
6 And Abraham said unto him, —Beware that thou do not take back my son thither!
Et Abraham lui dit: Garde-toi d'y reconduire mon fils!
7 Yahweh, God of the heavens, and God of the earth, who took me out of the house of my father, and out of the land of my kindred, and, who spake to me, and who sware to me, saying, To thy seed, will I give this land, he, will send his messenger before thee, so shalt thou take a wife for my son from thence.
L'Éternel, Dieu du ciel, qui m'a tiré de la maison de mon père, et de ma patrie et qui m'a fait cette promesse et ce serment: Je donnerai ce pays-ci à ta postérité, Lui-même enverra son ange pour te précéder, afin que tu ramènes de là une femme pour mon fils.
8 But if unwilling be the woman to follow thee, then shalt thou be clear from this mine oath, —Only my son, shalt thou not take back thither
Que si la femme ne voulait pas te suivre, alors tu seras libéré de ce serment que je t'impose; seulement ne dois-tu pas reconduire mon fils là.
9 So the servant placed his hand, under the thigh of Abraham, his lord, —and sware to him, over this thing.
Le serviteur posa donc la main sous la hanche d'Abraham, son seigneur, et lui prêta le serment dans ce sens.
10 Then took the servant ten camels, from among the camels of his lord, and went his way, —all the goods of his master being in his hand, —so be mounted, and went his way unto Mesopotamia, unto the city of Nahor.
Alors le serviteur prit dix chameaux parmi les chameaux de son maître, et il partit chargé de toutes sortes de beaux dons de son seigneur, et il se mit en route et gagna la Mésopotamie, la ville de Nachor.
11 And he made the camels kneel down outside the city, against the well of water, —at the time of evening, at the time of the coming forth of the women that drew water,
Et il agenouilla les chameaux en dehors de la ville près d'une fontaine au temps de la soirée, au temps où sortent celles qui puisent l'eau.
12 Then he said, O Yahweh, God of my lord Abraham! I pray thee cause it to fall out before me today, that thou deal in lovingkindness with my lord Abraham.
Et il dit: Éternel, Dieu de mon seigneur Abraham, daigne me faire rencontrer aujourd'hui, et use de bienveillance envers mon seigneur Abraham!
13 Here am, I, stationed by the fountain of water, —and, the daughters of the men of the city, are coming forth to draw water:
Voici je reste posté près de la fontaine, et les filles des hommes de la ville sortent pour puiser de l'eau.
14 so it shall come to pass that the young woman unto whom I shall say. Let down pray. thy pitcher that I may drink, and she shall say, Drink, and to thy camels also, will I give to drink, that, her! hast thou appointed for thy servant for Isaac, And, hereby, shall I get to know, that thou hast dealt in lovingkindness with my lord!
Or, qu'il se fasse que la jeune fille à qui je dirai: Penche donc ta cruche, afin que je boive, et qui dira: Bois! et j'abreuverai aussi tes chameaux, se trouve être celle que tu as destinée à ton serviteur Isaac; et à cela je reconnaîtrai que tu uses de bienveillance envers mon seigneur.
15 And it came to pass, ere yet, he, had done speaking, that lo! Rebekah, was coming forth who had been born to Bethuel son of Milcah, wife of Nahor, brother of Abraham, —with her pitcher upon her shoulder,
Et il n'avait pas encore achevé de parler que voici venir Rebecca, qui était née à Béthuel, fils de Milca, femme de Nachor, frère d'Abraham, sa cruche sur son épaule.
16 Now the young woman! was of very pleasing appearance, a virgin whom, no man, had known, —and she went down unto the fountain, and filled her pitcher and came up.
Or la jeune fille était très belle de figure, encore vierge, et nul homme ne l'avait connue. Et elle descendit à la fontaine, et emplit sa cruche et remonta.
17 And the servant ran to meet her, —and said, I pray thee let me drink a little water out of thy pitcher.
Alors le serviteur courut au-devant d'elle, et dit: Laisse-moi donc boire un peu d'eau de ta cruche!
18 And she said, Drink my lord, —And she hastened and lowered her pitcher on her hand and let him drink.
Et elle répondit: Bois, mon seigneur! et vite elle abaissa sa cruche sur sa main et lui donna à boire.
19 And when she had done giving him drink, —she said For thy camels also, will I draw, until they have done drinking.
Et après l'avoir entièrement désaltéré, elle dit: Je puiserai aussi pour tes chameaux jusqu'à ce qu'ils soient entièrement abreuvés.
20 So she hastened and emptied her pitcher into the drinking-trough, and ran again unto the well, to draw, —and she drew for all his camels.
Et vite elle vida sa cruche dans l'auge, et courut encore à la fontaine pour puiser, et elle puisa pour tous ses chameaux.
21 Now the man, was eagerly watching her, —keeping silence to see—whether Yahweh had prospered his way., or not.
Et l'homme la contemplait en silence pour voir si l'Éternel donnerait ou non du succès à son voyage.
22 And it came to pass when the camels had done drinking, that the man took a ring of gold, half a shekel its weight, —and two bracelets for her hands, ten of gold their weight;
Et lorsque les chameaux eurent fini de s'abreuver, l'homme prit un anneau d'or, pesant un demi-sicle, et deux bracelets pour ses poignets, du poids de dix sicles d'or,
23 and said Whose daughter art, thou? I pray thee, tell me. Is there in the house of thy father a place for us to tarry the night?
et dit: De qui es-tu fille? Indique-le moi donc! Y a-t-il pour nous dans la maison de ton père une place où passer la nuit?
24 And she said unto him, Daughter of Bethuel, am, I,—[Bethuel] son of Milcah whom she bare to Nahor.
Et elle lui répondit: Je suis fille de Béthuel, fils de Milca, que celle-ci a enfanté à Nachor.
25 And she said unto him, Both straw and fodder in plenty, have we, —also a place to tarry the night.
Et elle lui dit: Et paille et fourrage sont en abondance chez nous, et il y a gîte aussi pour passer la nuit.
26 Then the man bowed his head, and bent himself down unto Yahweh;
Alors l'homme s'inclina et se prosterna devant l'Éternel,
27 and said, Blessed be Yahweh. God of my lord Abraham, who hath not withdrawn his lovingkindness and his faithfulness, from my lord, —I—being in the way, Yahweh led me unto the house of the brethren of my lord!
et dit: Béni soit l'Éternel, Dieu de mon seigneur Abraham, qui ne s'est pas départi de son amour et de sa fidélité envers mon seigneur! Pour moi, l'Éternel m'a guidé sur la route de la maison des frères de mon seigneur.
28 And the young woman ran, and told the household of her mother, —according to these words.
Et la jeune fille courut informer de ces choses la maison de sa mère.
29 Now, Rebekah, had a brother, whose name, was Laban, —so Laban ran unto the man outside, unto the fountain.
Or Rebecca avait un frère, dont le nom était Laban. Et Laban accourut vers l'homme dehors à la fontaine.
30 And it came to pass, when he saw the ring, and the bracelets on the hands of his sister, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister saying, Thus, did the man speak unto me, that he came unto the man, and lo! he was standing by the camels near the fountain;
Et ayant vu l'anneau et les bracelets aux mains de sa sœur, et entendu les discours de Rebecca, sa sœur, qui disait: Ainsi m'a parlé cet homme, il vint auprès de l'homme; et voici, il se tenait près de ses chameaux à la fontaine.
31 and he said, Come in. thou blessed of Yahweh, —Wherefore shouldst thou stand outside, when I have made ready the house and a place for the camels?
Et il dit: Entre, béni de l'Éternel! pourquoi te tiens-tu dehors? J'ai disposé la maison, et il y a place pour les chameaux.
32 So the man came in towards the house, and ungirded the camels, —and there was given him straw and fodder for the camels, and water for bathing his own feet and the feet of the men who were with him;
Et l'homme entra dans la maison; et [Laban] débâta les chameaux, et donna de la paille et du fourrage pour les chameaux, et de l'eau pour laver ses pieds et les pieds des gens de sa suite.
33 and [food] was set before him to eat, But he said, I cannot eat, until I have spoken my words. And he said—Speak!
Et on lui servit à manger. Mais il dit: Je ne mangerai point que je n'aie dit ce que j'ai à dire.
34 Then said he, —Servant of Abraham, am I.
Et [Laban] répondit: Parle! Et il dit: Je suis serviteur d'Abraham.
35 Now, Yahweh, having blessed my lord exceedingly, and made him great, —and given him flocks and herds and silver and gold, and men-servants and maid-servants, and camels, and asses,
Et l'Éternel a grandement béni mon seigneur qui a est un homme considérable, et auquel Il a donné des brebis et des bœufs et de l'argent et de l'or et des serviteurs et des servantes, et des chameaux et des ânes.
36 then did Sarah wife of my lord, bear a son to my lord, after she had become old, —so he gave to him all that he had;
Et Sarah, femme d'Abraham, mon seigneur, a dans sa vieillesse enfanté un fils à mon seigneur, et il lui a donné tout ce qu'il possède.
37 And my lord put me on oath saying, —Thou shalt not take a wife for my son, of the daughters of the Canaanites in whose land, I, am dwelling;
Et mon seigneur m'a adjuré en ces termes: Tu ne choisiras pour femme de mon fils aucune des filles des Cananéens dont j'habite le pays;
38 but, unto the house of my father, shalt thou go, and unto my family, —and take a wife for my son.
mais tu te rendras dans la maison de mon père et dans ma famille, et tu y choisiras une femme pour mon fils.
39 So I said unto my lord, —Peradventure the woman will not follow me.
Et je dis à mon seigneur: Peut-être la femme ne voudra-t-elle pas me suivre!
40 And he said unto me, —Yahweh, before whom I have walked to and fro, will send his messenger with thee, so shall he prosper thy way, and thou shalt take a wife for my son out of my kindred and out of the house of my father.
Et il me dit: L'Éternel en la présence de qui j'ai marché, enverra son ange avec toi, et fera réussir ton voyage, et tu prendras une femme pour mon fils dans ma famille et dans la maison de mon père.
41 Then, shalt thou clear thyself from mine oath, for thou shalt go in unto my kindred, —and, if they will not grant her unto thee, then shalt thou be clear from mine oath.
Alors tu seras libéré du serment que tu me fais, si tu vas t'adresser à ma famille; et si on ne te l'accorde pas, tu seras libéré du serment que tu me fais.
42 So I came in to-day, unto the fountain, —and I said O Yahweh God of my lord Abraham! if, I pray thee thou art prospering my way whereon I am going,
Et en arrivant aujourd'hui à la fontaine, j'ai dit: Éternel, Dieu de mon seigneur Abraham, si tu daignes faire réussir mon voyage que je fais:
43 here, am I stationed by the fountain of water, —so then it shall come to pass that, the maiden that is coming forth to draw, and I shall say unto her Let me drink. I pray thee a little water out of thy pitcher;
voici, je me tiendrai près de la fontaine; et qu'il se fasse que la jeune fille sortant pour puiser de l'eau, à qui je dirai: Laisse-moi donc boire un peu d'eau de ta cruche,
44 and she shall say unto me Both, thou, drink, and for thy camels also, will I draw, the same, shall be the woman whom Yahweh hath appointed for the son of my lord.
et qui me répondra: Bois toi-même, et je puiserai aussi pour tes chameaux, se trouve être la femme que l'Éternel a destinée au fils de mon seigneur.
45 Ere yet, I, could make an end of speaking unto mine own heart, lo! then Rebekah, coming forth, with her pitcher on her shoulder, and she went down to the fountain, and drew, —and I said unto her Let me drink I pray thee!
Je n'avais pas encore fini de parler en mon cœur que voilà que Rebecca sort, la cruche sur l'épaule, et descend à la fontaine et puise; et je lui dis: Donne-moi donc à boire!
46 So she hastened and lowered her pitcher from off her, and said. Drink! and to thy camels also, will I give to drink, —So I drank and the camels also, she let drink.
Et vite elle abaissa sa cruche de dessus son épaule et dit: Bois, et j'abreuverai aussi tes chameaux, et je bus et elle abreuva aussi les chameaux.
47 Then I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said Daughter of Bethuel son of Nahor, whom, Milcah, bare to him, —Then put I the ring upon her nose, and the bracelets upon her hands;
Puis je lui fis cette question: De qui es-tu fille? Et elle répondit: De Béthuel, fils de Nachor à qui Milca l'a enfanté. Et je mis l'anneau à sa narine, et les bracelets à ses poignets.
48 and bowed my head and bent myself down unto Yahweh, —and I blessed Yahweh God of my lord Abraham, who had led me in a way of faithfulness, to take the daughter of the brother of my lord for his son.
Et je m'inclinai et me prosternai devant l'Éternel, et je bénis l'Éternel, Dieu de mon seigneur Abraham, qui m'a guidé dans la vraie voie pour marier la fille du frère de mon seigneur à son fils.
49 Now, therefore, if ye are dealing in lovingkindness and faithfulness with my lord, tell me, —and, if not, tell me, that I may turn unto the right hand or unto the left.
Et maintenant, si votre intention est de témoigner à mon seigneur bienveillance et fidélité, déclarez-le-moi; dans le cas contraire, déclarez-le-moi, afin que je me tourne à droite ou à gauche.
50 Then answered Laban and Bethuel and said, from Yahweh, hath come forth the word, —we cannot speak unto thee ill or well.
Alors Laban et Béthuel répondirent et dirent: Ceci procède de l'Éternel; nous ne pouvons rien te dire ni en mal, ni en bien.
51 Lo! Rebekah, is before thee, Take her and go thy way, —And let her become wife unto the son of thy lord, as Yahweh hath spoken.
Voilà Rebecca devant toi; prends-la et t'en va, et qu'elle devienne la femme du fils de ton seigneur, ainsi qu'a prononcé l'Éternel.
52 And it came to pass when Abraham’s servant heard their words, that he bowed himself down towards the earth unto Yahweh.
Et lorsque le serviteur d'Abraham entendit leur discours, il se prosterna contre terre devant l'Éternel.
53 Then the servant brought forth jewels of silver and jewels of gold and raiment, and gave unto Rebekah, —and precious things, gave he to her brother and to her mother.
Et le serviteur sortit des joyaux d'argent et des joyaux d'or, et des habillements, et les donna à Rebecca, et il donna des objets de prix à son frère et à sa mère.
54 And they did eat and drink he, and the men who were with him, and they tarried the night, —and when they arose in the morning, he said Let me go unto my lord!
Alors ils mangèrent et burent, lui et les gens de sa suite, et passèrent la nuit. Et le matin ils se levèrent, et il dit: Laissez-moi retourner vers mon seigneur.
55 Then said her brother and her mother, Let the young woman remain with us some days or rather ten, —After that, she shall go.
Et le frère et la mère de Rebecca dirent: Que la jeune fille reste avec nous quelques jours, soit dix jours; ensuite tu partiras.
56 And he said unto them, Do not hinder me, when, Yahweh, hath prospered my journey, —Let me go, that I may take my journey unto my lord!
Mais il leur dit: Ne me retardez pas! L'Éternel a fait réussir mon voyage, laissez-moi partir, afin que je retourne chez mon seigneur.
57 Then said they, We must call the young woman and ask at her mouth.
Et ils dirent: Nous appellerons la jeune fille et nous lui demanderons de se prononcer.
58 So they called Rebekah and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go.
Et ils appelèrent Rebecca et lui dirent: Vas-tu avec cet homme? Et elle répondit: Je vais.
59 So they let go Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham’s servant and his men.
Sur quoi ils laissèrent partir Rebecca, leur sœur, et sa nourrice et le serviteur d'Abraham et son monde.
60 And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, Our sister! become thou, thousands of ten thousands, —And let thy seed take possession of the gate of them that hate them!
Et ils bénirent Rebecca et lui dirent: O toi, notre sœur! deviens des milliers de myriades, Et que ta race occupe la porte de tes ennemis!
61 Then mounted Rebekah and her young woman and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man, —so the servant took Rebekah. and went his way.
Alors Rebecca et ses femmes se levèrent, et se placèrent sur les chameaux, et suivirent l'homme; et le serviteur ayant pris Rebecca se mit en route.
62 Now, Isaac, had come in at the entrance, of Beer-lahai-roi, —for, he, was dwelling in the land of the South:
Cependant Isaac était revenu de la fontaine du Vivant-qui-voit, car il habitait le Midi du pays.
63 and Isaac came forth to meditate in the field at the approach of evening, —so he lifted up his eyes and looked, and lo! camels, coming in.
Et Isaac était sorti pour se livrer à ses pensées dans les champs à l'approche du soir; et il leva les yeux et regarda, et voilà que des chameaux arrivaient.
64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and saw Isaac, —so she alighted with haste from off the camel;
Et Rebecca levant les yeux aperçut Isaac, et elle descendit de son chameau.
65 and said unto the servant, Who is this man that is walking in the field to meet us? And the servant said, That, is my lord. So she took the veil and covered herself.
Et elle dit au serviteur: Qui est cet homme qui s'avance par les champs à notre rencontre? Et le serviteur dit: C'est mon seigneur. Alors elle prit son voile et s'en couvrit.
66 And the servant recounted to Isaac, —all the things which he had done.
Et le serviteur raconta à Isaac toutes les choses qu'il avait faites.
67 And Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother; thus he took Rebekah and she became his wife and he loved her, —and Isaac consoled himself, for the loss of his mother.
Et Isaac introduisit Rebecca dans la tente de Sarah, sa mère, et il prit Rebecca, et elle devint sa femme et il l'aima; et Isaac se consola après le deuil de sa mère.
