Genesis 20

1 And Abraham brake up from thence, towards the land of the South, and fixed his dwelling between Kadesh and Shur, so he sojourned in Gerar.

Parti de là pour la terre australe, Abraham habita entre Cadès et Sur, et demeura comme étranger à Gérara.

2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife: My, sister, is she, —So Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah.

Or il dit de Sara sa femme: C’est ma sœur. Abimélech, roi de Gérara, envoya donc vers lui et la fit enlever.

3 Then God went in unto Abimelech, in a dream of the night, —and said to him, Behold thee dead! because of the woman whom thou hast taken, seeing that, she, is a married woman.

Mais Dieu vint vers Abimélech dans un songe pendant la nuit, et lui dit: Voilà que tu mourras, à cause de la femme que tu as enlevée; car elle a un mari.

4 Now, Abimelech, had not come near unto her, —so he said, O My Lord! a nation even a righteous one, wilt thou slay?

Or Abimélech ne l’avait pas touchée, et il dit: Seigneur, perdrez-vous une nation qui est dans l’ignorance, et innocente?

5 Had not, he himself, said to me, My sister, is she? and even she herself, said, My brother, is he? In the integrity of my heart and in the pureness of my hand, have I done this!

Lui-même ne m’a-t-il pas dit: C’est ma sœur? Et elle-même n’a-t-elle pas dit: C’est mon frère? C’est dans la simplicité de mon cœur et dans la pureté de mes mains que je l’ai fait.

6 And God said unto him in a dream, I, also, knew, that in the integrity of thy heart, thou didst this, so then, even I myself, withheld thee from sinning against me, for this reason, have I not suffered thee to touch her.

Et Dieu lui dit: Et moi aussi je sais que c’est avec un cœur simple que tu l’as fait; et c’est pour cela que je t’ai gardé, afin que tu ne péchasses pas contre moi, et que je n’ai pas permis que tu la touchasses.

7 Now, therefore restore the man’s wife, for a prophet, is he, that he may pray for thee and live thou, —But if thou art not going to restore her, know, that thou shalt die, thou—and all that are thine.

Maintenant donc rends à son mari cette femme; parce que c’est un prophète, et il priera pour toi, et tu vivras; mais si tu ne la rends pas, sache que tu mourras de mort, toi et tout ce qui est à toi.

8 So Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and spake all these words in their ears, and the men feared greatly.

Aussitôt, se levant de nuit, Abimélech appela tous ses serviteurs, et fit entendre toutes ces paroles à leurs oreilles; et tous ces hommes furent saisis d une grande crainte.

9 Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said to him, What hast thou done to us? and wherein had I sinned against thee, that thou shouldst have brought in over me and over my kingdom, a sin so great? Deeds, which should not be done, hast thou done with me.

Puis Abimélech appela aussi Abraham et lui dit: Que nous as-tu fait? et en quoi t’avons-nous offensé, pour que tu aies attiré sur moi et sur mon royaume un si grand péché? ce que tu ne devais pas faire, tu nous l’as fait.

10 And Abimelech said unto Abraham, —What hadst thou seen, that thou shouldst have done this thing?

Et de nouveau se plaignant, il dit: Qu’as-tu vu, pour agir ainsi?

11 And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely there is no fear of God, in this place, —therefore will they slay me for the sake of my wife.

Abraham répondit: J’ai pensé en moi-même, disant: Peut-être n’y a-t-il point la crainte de Dieu en ce lieu-ci, et ils me feront mourir à cause de ma femme.

12 Moreover also, in truth, my sister daughter of my father, she is, only not daughter of my mother, —so she became my wife.

D’ailleurs elle est vraiment aussi ma sœur, étant fille de mon père, quoiqu’elle ne soit pas fille de ma mère; et je l’ai prise pour femme.

13 And so it came to pass when the Gods caused me to wander from my father’s house, that I said to her, This, is thy lovingkindness, wherewith thou shalt deal with me, —Into whatsoever place we enter, say of me My brother, is he.

Or quand Dieu me fit sortir de la maison de mon père, je dis à Sara: Tu me feras cette grâce: dans tous les lieux où nous irons, tu diras que je suis ton frère.

14 Then took Abimelech sheep and oxen and men—servants and maid-servants, and gave to Abraham, —and restored to him Sarah his wife.

Abimélech prit donc des brebis, des bœufs, des serviteurs et des servantes, et il les donna à Abraham; et il lui rendit Sara sa femme.

15 And Abimelech, said, Lo! my land is before thee, —wherever it may seem good in thine eyes, dwell.

Et il dit: La terre est devant vous; partout où il te plaira, habites-y.

16 And to Sarah, he said, Lo! I have given a thousand of silver unto thy brother: Lo! that is for thee as a covering of eyes, to all who are with thee, —And so in every way, hath right been done.

Mais à Sara il dit: Voilà que j’ai donné à ton frère mille pièces d’argent, pour que tu aies un voile sur les yeux devant tous ceux qui seront avec toi, et en quelque lieu que tu ailles: et souviens-toi que tu as été enlevée.

17 And Abraham prayed unto God, —and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maid-servants, so that they bare children,

Mais Abraham ayant prié, Dieu guérit Abimélech, sa femme et ses servantes, et elles enfantèrent;

18 For Yahweh, had restrained from bearing, every female of the house of Abimelech, —because of Sarah, wife of Abraham.

Car le Seigneur avait frappé de stérilité toute la maison d’Abimélech, à cause de Sara femme d’Abraham.
