Genesis 20

1 And Abraham brake up from thence, towards the land of the South, and fixed his dwelling between Kadesh and Shur, so he sojourned in Gerar.

Abraham se transporta dans la terre du midi, et il demeura entre Cadès et Sur, puis il vint habiter en Gérare.

2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife: My, sister, is she, —So Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah.

Abraham dit alors de sa femme Sarra: Elle est ma sœur; car il avait crainte de dire: C'est ma femme, de peur qu'à cause d'elle les hommes de la ville ne le tuassent. Et Abimélech, roi de Gérare, fit enlever Sarra.

3 Then God went in unto Abimelech, in a dream of the night, —and said to him, Behold thee dead! because of the woman whom thou hast taken, seeing that, she, is a married woman.

Or, le Seigneur entra vers Abimélech pendant son sommeil, la nuit, et dit: Tu vas mourir à cause de la femme que tu as prise, car elle est mariée à un homme.

4 Now, Abimelech, had not come near unto her, —so he said, O My Lord! a nation even a righteous one, wilt thou slay?

Abimélech ne s'était point encore approché d'elle; il dit donc: Seigneur, perdrez-vous une nation juste pour avoir ignoré?

5 Had not, he himself, said to me, My sister, is she? and even she herself, said, My brother, is he? In the integrity of my heart and in the pureness of my hand, have I done this!

Lui-même ne m'a-t-il pas dit: C'est ma sœur? Elle-même n'a-t-elle point dit: Il est mon frère? C'est dans la pureté de mon cœur et l'équité de mes mains que j'ai fait cela.

6 And God said unto him in a dream, I, also, knew, that in the integrity of thy heart, thou didst this, so then, even I myself, withheld thee from sinning against me, for this reason, have I not suffered thee to touch her.

Le Seigneur lui dit, toujours pendant son sommeil: Je sais que tu as agi avec un cœur pur; aussi t'ai-je préservé de pécher contre moi. Je ne t'ai point laissé t'approcher de cette femme.

7 Now, therefore restore the man’s wife, for a prophet, is he, that he may pray for thee and live thou, —But if thou art not going to restore her, know, that thou shalt die, thou—and all that are thine.

Rends-la donc à son mari; c'est un prophète qui priera pour toi, et tu vivras; mais si tu ne la rends point, sache que tu périras avec tout ce qui est à toi.

8 So Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and spake all these words in their ears, and the men feared greatly.

Abimélech s'étant hâté de se lever de grand matin, appela tous ses serviteurs, et leur répéta toutes ces paroles, et tous ces hommes eurent grande crainte.

9 Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said to him, What hast thou done to us? and wherein had I sinned against thee, that thou shouldst have brought in over me and over my kingdom, a sin so great? Deeds, which should not be done, hast thou done with me.

Abimélech appela aussi Abraham, et il lui dit: Pourquoi nous as-tu traités de la sorte; avions-nous péché envers toi pour que tu fisses tomber ainsi sur moi et sur mon royaume ce grand péché? Tu m'as fait ce que personne ne ferait.

10 And Abimelech said unto Abraham, —What hadst thou seen, that thou shouldst have done this thing?

Et Abimélech ajouta: En vue de quoi en as-tu agi de la sorte?

11 And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely there is no fear of God, in this place, —therefore will they slay me for the sake of my wife.

Abraham répondit: Je me suis, en effet, dit: Peut-être n'y a-t-il point de piété en ce lieu, et vont-ils me tuer à cause de ma femme.

12 Moreover also, in truth, my sister daughter of my father, she is, only not daughter of my mother, —so she became my wife.

Du reste, elle est véritablement ma sœur de père et non de mère, et elle est devenue ma femme.

13 And so it came to pass when the Gods caused me to wander from my father’s house, that I said to her, This, is thy lovingkindness, wherewith thou shalt deal with me, —Into whatsoever place we enter, say of me My brother, is he.

Et il est advenu, lorsque Dieu m'a fait sortir de la maison de mon père, que j'ai dit à ma femme: Tu me rendras cet équitable service en tous lieux où nous irons; dis de moi: C'est mon frère.

14 Then took Abimelech sheep and oxen and men—servants and maid-servants, and gave to Abraham, —and restored to him Sarah his wife.

Abimélech prit mille doubles drachmes, et des brebis, et des veaux, et des serviteurs et des servantes, qu'il donna à Abraham, et il lui rendit sa femme Sarra.

15 And Abimelech, said, Lo! my land is before thee, —wherever it may seem good in thine eyes, dwell.

Et Abimélech dit à Abraham: Voilà ma terre devant toi, séjourne où il te plaira.

16 And to Sarah, he said, Lo! I have given a thousand of silver unto thy brother: Lo! that is for thee as a covering of eyes, to all who are with thee, —And so in every way, hath right been done.

Il dit aussi à Sarra: Tu vois, je donne à ton frère mille drachmes; elles seront pour faire respecter ton visage et celui de tes suivantes; sois désormais véridique en tout.

17 And Abraham prayed unto God, —and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maid-servants, so that they bare children,

Abraham pria Dieu, et Dieu guérit Abimélech, sa femme et ses servantes, et elles enfantèrent.

18 For Yahweh, had restrained from bearing, every female of the house of Abimelech, —because of Sarah, wife of Abraham.

Car le Seigneur avait fermé toutes les entrailles, en la maison d'Abimélech, à cause de Sarra, femme d'Abraham.
