Genesis 16
1 But Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children, —she had, however, an Egyptian handmaid, whose name was Hagar.
Igitur Sarai, uxor Abram, non genuerat liberos: sed habens ancillam ægyptiam nomine Agar,
2 So then Sarai said unto Abram Behold, I pray thee, Yahweh hath restrained me, from bearing, go in I pray thee unto, my handmaid, peradventure I may be built up from, her, And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.
dixit marito suo: Ecce, conclusit me Dominus, ne parerem. Ingredere ad ancillam meam, si forte saltem ex illa suscipiam filios. Cumque ille acquiesceret deprecanti,
3 So Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian. her handmaid, at the end of ten years of Abram’s dwelling in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband, to be to him as a wife.
tulit Agar ægyptiam ancillam suam post annos decem quam habitare cœperant in terra Chanaan: et dedit eam viro suo uxorem.
4 And he went in unto Hagar and she conceived, —and when she saw that she had conceived, lightly esteemed, was her lady, in her eyes.
Qui ingressus est ad eam. At illa concepisse se videns, despexit dominam suam.
5 Then said Sarai unto Abram: My wrong, is, on thee! I, gave my handmaid into thy bosom, and when she seeth that she hath conceived, then am I lightly esteemed in her eyes Yahweh judge betwixt me and her.
Dixitque Sarai ad Abram: Inique agis contra me: ego dedi ancillam meam in sinum tuum, quæ videns quod conceperit, despectui me habet: judicet Dominus inter me et te.
6 And Abram said unto Sarai, Lo! thy handmaid, is in thy hand, do to her what is good in thine eyes. So Sarai humbled her, and she fled from her face.
Cui respondens Abram: Ecce, ait, ancilla tua in manu tua est, utere ea ut libet. Affligente igitur eam Sarai, fugam iniit.
7 And the messenger of Yahweh found her by the fountain of water in the desert, —by the fountain in the way to Shur.
Cumque invenisset eam angelus Domini juxta fontem aquæ in solitudine, qui est in via Sur in deserto,
8 So he said Hagar! handmaid of Sarai! Whence hast thou come, and whither wouldst thou go? And she said, From the face of Sarai, my lady, am, I, fleeing.
dixit ad illam: Agar ancilla Sarai, unde venis? et quo vadis? Quæ respondit: A facie Sarai dominæ meæ ego fugio.
9 And the messenger of Yahweh said to her, Return unto thy lady, —and humble thyself under her hands.
Dixitque ei angelus Domini: Revertere ad dominam tuam, et humiliare sub manu illius.
10 And the messenger of Yahweh said to her, I will, greatly multiply, thy seed—so that it shall not be numbered for multitude.
Et rursum: Multiplicans, inquit, multiplicabo semen tuum, et non numerabitur præ multitudine.
11 And the messenger of Yahweh said to her, Behold thee! with child, and about bearing a son—and thou shalt call his name Ishmael ["God hearkeneth"] for Yahweh hath hearkened unto thy humiliation.
Ac deinceps: Ecce, ait, concepisti, et paries filium: vocabisque nomen ejus Ismaël, eo quod audierit Dominus afflictionem tuam.
12 But, he, will be a wild ass of a man, his hand, against every one, and every one’s hand against him—yet, in presence of all his brethren, shall he have his habitation.
Hic erit ferus homo: manus ejus contra omnes, et manus omnium contra eum: et e regione universorum fratrum suorum figet tabernacula.
13 And she called the name of Yahweh, who had spoken unto her, Thou GOD of vision! For she said. Do I even here, retain my vision after a vision?
Vocavit autem nomen Domini qui loquebatur ad eam: Tu Deus qui vidisti me. Dixit enim: Profecto hic vidi posteriora videntis me.
14 On this account, is the well called, the well of the life of vision, lo! it is between Kadesh and Bered.
Propterea appellavit puteum illum Puteum viventis et videntis me. Ipse est inter Cades et Barad.
15 So Hagar bare to Abram a son, —and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bare, Ishmael.
Peperitque Agar Abræ filium: qui vocavit nomen ejus Ismaël.
16 Now, Abram, was eighty—six years old, —when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.
Octoginta et sex annorum erat Abram quando peperit ei Agar Ismaëlem.
