Ezekiel 16
1 And the word of Yahweh came unto me, saying:
Het woord van Jahweh werd tot mij gericht:
2 Son of man Let Jerusalem know her abominations,
Mensenkind, ge moet Jerusalem haar gruwel doen kennen
3 Therefore shalt thou say— Thus saith My Lord. Yahweh To Jerusalem, Thine origin and thy birth, were of the land of the Canaanite, — Thy father was the Amorite And thy mother a Hittite
en zeggen: Zo spreekt Jahweh, de Heer, tot Jerusalem! Uw land van afkomst en geboorte is Kanaän; uw vader was een Amoriet, uw moeder een Hittiet.
4 And, as for thy birth, in the day thou wast born, Thy navel-cord was not cut, And, in water, wast thou not bathed to cleanse thee, — And, as for being salted, thou was not salted, And, as for being bandaged, thou wast not bandaged.
Op deze manier zijt ge ter wereld gekomen: Toen ge geboren werdt, heeft niemand uw navelstreng afgeknipt, of u met water schoongewassen; met zout werdt ge niet ingewreven, niet in doeken gewikkeld.
5 No eye, threw a shield over thee, by doing for thee one of these things taking pity on thee, - But thou wast cast out on the face of the field Because thy person, was abhorred, in the day thou wast born.
Geen oog ontfermde zich over u, om uit medelijden u een van die zorgen te wijden. Neen, op de dag van uw geboorte werdt ge te vondeling gelegd op het vrije veld, omdat men uw leven niets waard vond.
6 And I passed by thee, and looked upon thee, thrusting about thee in thy blood, And said to thee— Despite thy blood, live! Yea I said to thee— Despite thy blood, live!
Toen kwam Ik u voorbij, en zag u spartelen in uw bloed. Ik sprak tot u, terwijl ge met bloed waart besmeurd: Blijf leven!
7 Into myriads—like the bud of the field, made I thee, And thou didst increase and become well grown, and didst attain to most excellent adornments, — Thy breasts were well-formed And thy hair was grown, But thou thyself wast utterly naked.
fris als een veldbloem maakte Ik u. Ge groeide op en werdt groot; ge bereikte de leeftijd der stonden: uw borsten waren ontwikkeld, uw haar begon te groeien; maar ge waart nog altijd bloot en naakt.
8 And I passed by thee and looked upon thee and lo! thy time was the time for endearments, So I spread my skirt over thee, and covered thy shame, And took an oath to thee And entered into covenant with thee. Declareth My Lord. Yahweh. And thou didst become mine.
Weer kwam Ik langs u, en bemerkte, dat de tijd der liefde voor u was gekomen; Ik spreidde mijn mantelslip over u uit, en bedekte uw schaamte. Ik zwoer u trouw, en sloot een verbond met u, zegt Jahweh, de Heer; zo werdt gij de mijne!
9 And I bathed thee in water, and rinsed thy blood from off thee, And anointed thee with oil;
Ik wies u met water, spoelde uw bloed van u af, en zalfde u met olie;
10 And clothed thee with an embroidered dress, And sandalled thee in red leather, And wrapped thee about with fine linen, And put over thee a mantle of silk.
Ik deed u bonte kleren aan, gaf u schoeisel van het fijnste leder, bond u een hoofddoek om van damast, hulde u in een sluier van zijde.
11 Then decked I thee with ornaments, And put bracelets upon thy hands, And a neckchain upon thy throat;
Ik smukte u met sieraden, deed armbanden aan uw polsen, een snoer om uw hals;
12 And put a nose-jewel upon thy nose, And earrings in thine ears, And a crown of adorning, upon thy head.
Ik gaf u een ring door uw neus en hangers aan uw oren een prachtige kroon op uw hoofd.
13 Thus wast thou adorned with gold and silver, And thy raiment was of fine linen and silk and embroidered work, Fine flour and honey and oil, didst thou eat, — And so thou becamest exceedingly beautiful, And didst attain unto royalty.
Zo waart ge getooid met goud en zilver; uw kleren waren van damast en zijde en bonte weefsels. Het fijnste meel en honing en olie mocht ge eten. Ge werdt een stralende schoonheid, geschikt voor het koningschap!
14 Then went forth thy fame among the nations. for thy beauty, - For perfect, it was—in my splendour which I had put upon thee, Declareth My Lord, Yahweh.
Van uw schoonheid ging een roep uit onder de volken, want die was volmaakt door de opschik, waarmee Ik u begiftigd had, spreekt Jahweh, de Heer!
15 Then didst thou trust in thy beauty, And become unchaste, because of thy fame, - And didst pour out thine unchastity upon every passer-by, his it was!
Maar ge werdt vrijmoedig met uw schoonheid, en uw gevierdheid hadt ge veil. Iedereen, die voorbij kwam, hebt ge uw lust getoond, aan hem u overgegeven.
16 Yea thou didst take of thy raiment and madest thee high places of hangings, And didst commit unchastity thereon, - Which ought not to have befallen And not to have come to pass.
Ge hebt uw kleren misbruikt, om er bonte hoogten van te maken: daarop hebt ge de deerne gespeeld, onbeschaamd en onbevreesd.
17 But thou didst take thine adorning jewels Of my gold and of my silver which I had given thee, And didst make thee images of the male, — And didst act unchastely with them;
Ge hebt uw sieraden gehaald, het goud en zilver, dat Ik u had geschonken; ge hebt er mannenbeelden van gemaakt, en daarmee ontucht bedreven.
18 And thou didst take thine embroidered raiment, and cover them, - And mine oil and mine incense, didst thou set before them;
Ge hebt uw bonte gewaden genomen, en ze daarmee bekleed; mijn olie en wierook hebt ge er voor neergezet.
19 And my food which I had given thee, Fine flour and oil and honey wherewith I fed thee, And didst set it before them for a satisfying odour Yea so it was, — Saith My Lord Yahweh.
Het voedsel dat Ik u gegeven had, het fijnste meel, olie en honing, die Ik u tot spijs had geschonken, hebt ge hun aangeboden tot een liefelijke offergeur: zo was het, spreekt Jahweh, de Heer.
20 And thou didst take thy sons and thy daughters, Whom thou hadst borne unto me, And didst sacrifice them unto them to be devoured, - Is this of thine unchastity. a light thing?
Zelfs hebt ge de zonen en de dochters, die ge Mij geschonken hadt, niet gespaard, maar ze hun ten offer gebracht, opdat zij ze konden verslinden. Was uw ontucht nog niet erg genoeg,
21 Yea thou didst slay my children, — And didst deliver them up. that they should be caused to pass through the fire unto them.
dat ge mijn zonen moest slachten, ze door het vuur deedt gaan, en ze zo hebt opgeofferd?
22 And in all thine abominations, and thine unchaste ways, thou rememberedst not the days of thy youth, When thou wast utterly naked. When thou wast thrusting about thee in thy blood!
Nooit hebt ge bij al die gruwelen en ontucht eens teruggedacht aan de dagen van uw jeugd, toen ge naakt waart en ontbloot, en in uw bloed lag te trappelen.
23 And it came to pass after all thy wickedness, Woe! Woe! to thee, Exclaimeth My Lord Yahweh;
Na al die boosheid: wee u, wee u! spreekt Jahweh, de Heer:
24 That thou didst build thee a brothel, — and didst make thee a height in every broadway:
hebt ge u een bordeel gebouwd, en uw kraam geopend in elke straat;
25 At the head of every road, didst thou build thy height, And bring thy beauty into disgust, And open thy feet to every passer-by, So didst thou make thine unchaste ways to abound.
op elke straathoek hebt ge uw kraam gebouwd, uw schoonheid onteerd, aan elken voorbijganger u aangeboden, en voortdurend ontucht gepleegd.
26 Then didst thou extend thine unchaste acts unto the sons of Egypt—thy neighbour great of flesh, - And caused thine unchaste ways to abound provoking me to anger.
Ge hebt ontucht bedreven met de Egyptenaren, uw geile buren; voortdurend hebt ge ontucht gepleegd, om Mij te tergen.
27 Lo! therefore, I have stretched out my hand against thee, And diminished thine allotted portion, — And have delivered thee up unto the desire of them who hate thee The daughters of the Philistines, who are ashamed of thy lewd way.
Zie, toen strekte Ik mijn hand al naar u uit, Ik kortte uw erfdeel in, en gaf u over aan de haat van uw vijandinnen, aan de Filistijnse meisjes, die zich schaamden over uw schandelijk gedrag.
28 Thou didst also extend thine unchastity unto the sons of Assyria, because thou wast insatiable. Yet though thou didst behave unchastely with them, yet even so couldst thou not be satisfied,
Daarna hebt ge u aan de Assyriërs vergooid, omdat ge nog niet bevredigd waart; ook met hen hebt ge ontucht bedreven, en ge kondt er maar niet genoeg van krijgen.
29 Thou didst therefore cause thine unchaste ways to abound unto the land of Canaan as towards Chaldea. Yet even herewith, wast thou not satisfied.
Zonder ophouden hebt ge ontucht bedreven met het handelsland Chaldea, maar ook daar werdt ge niet bevredigd.
30 How weak was thy heart! Exclaimeth My Lord Yahweh, — That thou couldst have done all these things, The doing of a lewd woman without shame:
Hoe heftig was uw hartstocht, zegt Jahweh, de Heer, dat ge dit alles, dit gedoe van een onbeschaamde deerne, volhieldt,
31 That thou couldst have built thy brothel at the head of every road, And thy height, couldst have made in every broadway, - Yet becamest not as a harlot to lay claim to a harlot’s hire.
dat ge uw bordeel hebt gebouwd op elke straathoek, aan elke weg uw kraam hebt geopend, en toch geen echte deerne waart, die het enkel voor geld doet.
32 A wife who committeth adultery, instead of her husband accepteth strangers.
O overspelige vrouw, in plaats van uw eigen man neemt ge vreemden;
33 To all harlots, they give a present, — But, thou, didst give thy presents to all thy lovers, And didst bribe them to come in unto thee from every side, in thine unchastity!
en terwijl men aan alle deernen een vergoeding geeft, hebt gij geschenken aan al uw minnaars uitgedeeld: ge hebt ze omgekocht, om van alle kanten met ontuchtige bedoelingen tot u te komen.
34 And so there came about in thee, the reverse of women, in thine unchastity, In that they did not follow thee for purposes of lewdness, — And in that thou gavest a present while, no present, was given to thee So didst thou become, the reverse.
Ge deedt juist het omgekeerde van de andere vrouwen: ge waart een deerne, maar men behoefde u niet achterna te lopen; gij gaaft geschenken, maar u werd geen vergoeding gegeven; juist het omgekeerde hebt ge gedaan!
35 Therefore O harlot, hear thou the word of Yahweh;
Daarom deerne, luister naar het woord van Jahweh!
36 Thus saith My Lord Yahweh, — Because thy money, was poured out, and thy shame, was uncovered, in thine unchastity, unto thy lovers, —and unto all thine abominable manufactured gods, even as the blood of thy children, whom thou didst deliver up unto them,
Dit zegt Jahweh, de Heer: Omdat ge voor uw minnaars en voor al uw gruwelijke schandgoden in uw ontucht uw schaamte ontbloot en uw naaktheid onthuld hebt, en het bloed van uw zonen aan hen hebt geofferd,
37 Therefore behold me! gathering together all thy lovers unto whom thou didst make thyself pleasant, Even all whom thou lovedst, With all whom thou hatedst, — Yea I will gather them together unto thee from every side And will uncover thy shame unto them, And they shall see all thy shame.
daarom breng Ik al uw minnaars bijeen, voor wie ge zo lief waart; zowel hen die ge bemind hebt, als hen die ge hebt achtergesteld. Ik breng ze van alle kanten rond u samen, om voor hen uw schaamte te onthullen, zodat ze u in heel uw naaktheid kunnen aanschouwen!
38 So will I judge thee. with the judgments meted out to adulteresses and shedders of blood, - And will repay thee with the blood of indignation and jealousy;
Ik zal aan u het vonnis voltrekken van een vrouw, die trouw breekt en bloed vergiet, en zo mijn toorn en jaloezie op u koelen.
39 And will deliver thee into their hand. And they shall pull down thy brothel And break in pieces thy heights, And strip thee of thy raiment, And take away thine adorning jewels, - And leave thee utterly naked.
Ik zal u aan hen overleveren; zij zullen uw bordeel afbreken, uw kramen omvertrekken, u de kleren van het lijf rukken, uw sieraden afnemen, en u naakt en bloot laten liggen.
40 Then will they bring up against thee a gathered host, And they will stone thee with stones, - And cut thee to pieces with their swords;
Zij zullen een vergadering over u houden, u met keien stenigen, en met hun zwaard u in stukken houwen.
41 And burn up thy houses with fire, And execute upon thee judgments before the eyes of many women, —So will I cause thee to cease from acting unchastely, Moreover also a present, shalt thou not give any more.
Dan steken ze uw huizen in brand, en zullen ten aanschouwen van talrijke vrouwen het vonnis aan u voltrekken. Zo maak Ik een einde aan uw ontucht, en zult ge geen geschenken meer uitdelen!
42 So will I let mine indignation find rest in thee, And my jealousy shall depart from thee, —And I will be quiet, and not be provoked any more.
Ik zal mijn woede op u koelen, mijn jaloezie op u stillen, en Ik zal voldaan zijn en niet meer ontstemd.
43 Because thou hast not remembered the days of thy youth, But hast enraged me with all these things Therefore also behold! I thy way, upon thine own head, will place Declareth My Lord Yahweh, And thou shalt not commit a crime above all thine abominations
Omdat ge nooit eens terugdacht aan de dagen van uw jeugd, maar Mij door dat alles hebt blijven prikkelen, daarom zal ook Ik uw gedrag op uw hoofd laten neerkomen, spreekt Jahweh, de Heer, en zult ge bij al uw gruwelen tenminste geen ontucht meer doen!
44 Lo! every one who useth proverbs, against thee, shall use a proverb saying, — Like the mother, so her daughter!
Zie, elke spreukendichter past op u het gezegde toe: Zo moeder, zo dochter!
45 The daughter of thy mother, thou art! One abhorring her own husband and her own children, — Yea the sister of thy sisters, thou art Who abhorred their own husbands and their own children, Your mother was a Hittite, And your father an Amorite.
Een echte dochter zijt ge van uw moeder, die haar man en haar kinderen verliet; ge zijt het evenbeeld van uw zusters, die niets om haar man en om haar kinderen gaven. Uw moeder was een Hittiet, uw vader een Amoriet.
46 And thine elder sister, was Samaria, she and her daughters, dwelling on thy left hand, — And thy sister younger than thou dwelling on thy right hand was Sodom and her daughters.
Uw oudste zuster, die aan uw linkerhand woont, is Samaria met haar dochters; uw jongste zuster, die aan uw rechterhand woont, is Sodoma met haar dochters.
47 Yet not in their ways, didst thou walk, nor according to their abominations, didst thou do, — As though that were quite too little, thou didst corrupt thyself beyond them in all thy ways.
Ge hebt u niet tevreden gesteld, in haar voetspoor te treden, en gruwelen als zij te bedrijven: heel uw gedrag was stuitender nog dan het hare!
48 As I live, Declareth My Lord Yahweh, Very! Sodom thy sister had not done, neither she nor her daughters, —as thou and thy daughters have done.
Zo waar Ik leef, zegt Jahweh, de Heer: Uw zuster Sodoma met haar dochters heeft het zo bont niet gemaakt als gij met uw dochters.
49 Lo! this became the iniquity of Sodom thy sister, — Pride, fulness of bread, and careless security came to her and to her daughters, And the hand of the oppressed and the needy, she strengthened not.
Dit was enkel de zonde van Sodoma, uw zuster: zij met haar dochters leden aan overmoed, aan zwelgerij en zorgeloze rust; den misdeelde en behoeftige ondersteunden zij niet;
50 So then they became haughty, and committed abomination before me, - And I took them away. when I saw [it],
ze waren hovaardig, en bedreven gruwelen in mijn ogen. Toch heb Ik ze verstoten, zoals ge gezien hebt.
51 Nor did, Samaria, commit, one-half thy sins, — But thou didst multiply thine abominations more than they, And didst cause thy sisters to appear righteous, by all the abominations which thou didst commit.
Ook Samaria heeft nog niet de helft misdaan van wat gij hebt bedreven. Ge hebt veel erger gruwelen bedreven dan zij beiden, en door uw stuitend gedrag uw zusters nog in een gunstig daglicht geplaatst.
52 Thou also bear thine own reproach, which thou didst adjudge to thy sisters, by thy sins in which thou wast more abominable than they, thou didst make them appear more righteous than thou, — Thou also, therefore turn thou pale and bear thine own reproach, for making thy sisters appear righteous!
Draag dan ook gij uw schande, gij die voor uw zusters in de bres zijt gesprongen; want door uw veel zwaardere zonden zijn zij bij u vergeleken onschuldig. Schaam u dus en draag uw schande, dat ge uw zusters nog verontschuldigt.
53 When therefore I bring back their captivity, The captivity of Sodom and her daughters, And the captivity of Samaria and her daughters Then will I bring back thy captivities in their midst:
Ik zal haar lot ten beste keren: het lot van Sodoma met haar dochters, en het lot van Samaria met haar dochters,
54 That thou mayest bear thine own reproach, And take to thyself reproach because of all that thou didst in comforting them.
opdat ge uw schande moogt dragen en u moogt schamen over al wat ge misdreven hebt, en gij die beiden berusting kunt brengen.
55 When thy sisters Sodom and her daughters shall return to their former estate, And Samaria and her daughters shall return to their former estate Then thou and thy daughters, shall return to your former estate.
Uw zuster Sodoma zal met haar dochters in haar vroegere staat worden hersteld, en Samaria zal met haar dochters terugkeren tot haar vroegere toestand.
56 And Sodom thy sister was never heard in thy mouth, —In the day of thy pride:
Was uw zuster Sodoma niet tot een schimpwoord op uw lippen, ten tijde van uw overmoed,
57 Before thy wickedness was discovered, As now, [thou art] the reproach of the daughters of Syria and all round about her the daughters of the Philistines, —who are despising thee on every side.
voordat uw schaamte ontbloot werd? Nu zijt ge net als zij de spot der vrouwen van Edom met heel zijn omgeving, de spot der Filistijnse vrouwen, die van alle kanten u honen.
58 As for thy crime and thine abominations, thou thyself, dost bear them, — Declareth Yahweh.
Uw ontucht en uw schanddaad, ge zult ze dragen, zegt Jahweh, de Heer.
59 For Thus, saith My Lord, Yahweh, Therefore will I deal with thee just as thou hast dealt, - In that thou didst despise an oath by breaking a covenant.
Zo spreekt Jahweh, de Heer: Eerst als Ik met u gedaan heb, zoals gij met Mij hebt gedaan: met u, die de eed zo gering acht, dat ge het verbond hebt verbroken:
60 Therefore will I remember my covenant with thee in the days of thy youth, — And will establish for thee a covenant age-abiding.
dan zal Ik het verbond weer gedenken, dat Ik in uw jeugd met u aanging, en zal Ik een eeuwigdurend verbond met u sluiten.
61 Thou shalt therefore remember thy ways and take to thyself reproach, by receiving thy sisters. The older than thou, And the younger than thou, - And I will give them unto thee for daughters Though not by thine own covenant.
Dan zult ge met schaamte terugdenken aan uw gedrag, als Ik uw oudere zusters met uw jongere zusters neem, en ze u tot dochters geef, zonder het aan u verplicht te zijn.
62 But I myself, will establish my covenant with thee— And thou shalt know that I, am Yahweh:
Ik zal mijn verbond met u aangaan, en gij zult erkennen, dat Ik Jahweh ben;
63 To the end thou mayest remember and turn pale, and there be to thee no more, an opening of mouth, because of thy reproach, - In that I have accepted a propitiatory covering for thee as to all that thou hast done, Declareth My Lord. Yahweh.
opdat ge tot inkeer komt en bloost, en van schaamte geen woord durft zeggen, als Ik u alles vergeef wat ge misdreven hebt, zegt Jahweh, de Heer.
