Exodus 22
1 When a man stealeth an ox or a sheep, and slayeth it, or selleth it, with five of the herd, shall he make good—for the ox, or with four of the flock, for the sheep.
“Quien robe un buey o una oveja y la mate o la venda, deberá devolver cinco bueyes por un buey y cuatro ovejas por una oveja.
2 If, in the place of breaking in, the thief be found and he is smitten so that he dieth, there is due for him no shedding of blood:
“Si se descubre a un ladrón entrando en la casa de alguien y es golpeado hasta la muerte, nadie será culpable de asesinato.
3 should the sun have arisen upon him, there would be shedding of blood due for him, —he is surely to make restitution, if he hath nothing, then is he to be sold, for his theft.
Pero si ocurre durante el día, entonces alguien es culpable de asesinato. El ladrón debe devolver todo lo robado. Si no tiene nada, entonces debe ser vendido para pagar lo que fue robado.
4 If the thing stolen is found in his hand—whether ox or ass or sheep, alive, with two, shall he make restitution.
Si lo que fue robado es un animal vivo que todavía tiene, ya sea un buey, un asno o una oveja, debe devolver el doble.
5 When a man causeth a field or a vineyard to be depastured, or hath sent in his own cattle and stripped the field of another, he shall, surely make restitution, out of his own field, according to the yield thereof; or if, all the field, he depasture, with the best of his own field, or with the best of his own vineyard, shall he make restitution.
“Si el ganado pasta en un campo o en un viñedo y su dueño lo deja vagar para que pasten en el campo de otro, el dueño debe pagar una compensación con lo mejor de sus propios campos o viñedos.
6 When a fire breaketh out and hath come upon thorns and so there is consumed a stack of sheaves, or the standing corn, or the field, he that kindled the fire, shall surely make restitution.
“Si se inicia un incendio que se extiende a los arbustos espinosos y luego quema el grano apilado o en pie, o incluso todo el campo, la persona que inició el fuego debe pagar una compensación completa.
7 When a man giveth unto his neighbour silver or jewelry, to keep, and it is stolen out of the house of the man:
“Si alguien le da a su vecino dinero o posesiones para que las guarde y se las roban de la casa del vecino, si el ladrón es atrapado debe pagar el doble.
8 if the thief be found, he shall give in restitution double, if the thief be not found, then shall the owner of the house be brought near unto God to swear that he hath not laid his hand on the property of his neighbour.
Si el ladrón no es atrapado, el propietario de la casa debe comparecer ante los jueces para averiguar si se llevó la propiedad de su vecino.
9 For any affair of trespass—for an ox, for an ass, for a sheep, for a mantle for anything lost as to which one could say—This is it, unto God, shall come the affair of them both, —he whom God shall condemn, shall make restitution of double to his neighbour.
“Si hay una discusión sobre la propiedad de un buey, un asno, una oveja, una prenda de vestir, o cualquier cosa que se haya perdido y alguien dice: ‘Esto es mío’, ambas partes deben llevar su caso ante los jueces. Aquel al que los jueces encuentren culpable debe devolverle el doble al otro.
10 When a man delivereth unto his neighbour, an ass, or an ox or a sheep, or any beast, to keep, —and it dieth or is fractured, or is driven away, no one beholding,
“Si alguien pide a un vecino que cuide un asno, un buey, una oveja o cualquier otro animal, pero éste muere o se lesiona o es robado sin que nadie se dé cuenta,
11 the oath of Yahweh, shall come between them both, That he hath not laid his hand on the property of his neighbour, —then shall the owner thereof accept it and he shall not make restitution.
entonces se debe prestar un juramento ante el Señor para decidir si el vecino ha tomado la propiedad del dueño. El propietario debe aceptar el juramento y no exigir una compensación.
12 But, if it be verily stolen, from him, he shall make restitution to the owner thereof.
“Sin embargo, si el animal fue realmente robado al vecino, debe compensar al propietario.
13 If it be, verily torn in pieces, he shall bring it in as a witness—for that which was torn, he shall not make restitution.
Si fue matado y despedazado por un animal salvaje, el vecino deberá presentar el cadáver como prueba y no necesita pagar indemnización.
14 And when a man asketh aught of his neighbour, and it is fractured or dieth, its owner, not being with it, he shall, surely make restitution.
“Si alguien toma prestado un animal del vecino y éste resulta herido o muere mientras su dueño no está presente, debe pagar una indemnización en su totalidad.
15 If, its owner, was with it, he shall not make restitution, —if it is, hired, it cometh into its hire.
Si el propietario estaba presente, no se pagará ninguna compensación. Si el animal fue alquilado, sólo se debe pagar el precio del alquiler.
16 And, when a man enticeth a virgin who is not betrothed, and lieth with her, he shall, surely pay a purchase-price, that she may be his wife.
“Si un hombre seduce a una virgen no comprometida para casarse y se acuesta con ella, debe pagar el precio completo de la novia para que se convierta en su esposa.
17 If her father utterly refuse, to give her to him, silver, shall he weigh out, according to the purchase-price of virgins.
Si el padre de ella se niega rotundamente a dársela, el hombre debe pagar la misma cantidad que el precio de la novia por una virgen.
18 A sorceress, shalt thou not suffer to live.
“No se debe permitir que viva una mujer que practique la brujería.
19 Whosoever lieth with a beast shall surely be put to death.
“Todo aquel que tenga relaciones sexuales con un animal debe ser ejecutado.
20 He that sacrificeth to the gods shall be devoted to destruction, —except [he sacrificeth] to Yahweh alone.
“Cualquiera que se sacrifique a cualquier otro dios que no sea el Señor debe ser apartado y ejecutado.
21 And, a sojourner, shalt thou not tread down neither shalt thou drive him away, —for sojourners, ye became in the land of Egypt.
“No se debe explotar o maltratar a un extranjero. Recuerden que ustedes mismos fueron una vez extranjeros en Egipto.
22 Neither widow nor fatherless, shalt thou humiliate:
“No se aprovechen de ninguna viuda o huérfano.
23 if thou, do humiliate, him, when he in anywise crieth out unto me, I will, surely hear, his outcry:
Si los maltratan, y ellos me piden ayuda, responderé a su clamor.
24 so shall kindle mine anger, and I will slay you with the sword, —and your wives, shall become widows, and your, sons fatherless.
Me enfadaré y mataré a quien se aproveche de ellos con espada. Entonces sus esposas se convertirán en viudas y sus hijos quedarán huérfanos.
25 If, silver, thou wilt lend unto my people—unto the humbled one by thee, thou shalt not be to him like one that lendeth on interest, —thou shalt not lay upon him interest.
“Si le prestas dinero a mi pueblo porque son pobres, no te comportes como un prestamista con ellos. No debes cobrarles ningún interés.
26 If thou, do take in pledge, the mantle of thy neighbour, by the going in of the sun, shalt thou restore it to him;
“Si necesitas la capa de tu vecino como garantía de un préstamo, debes devolvérsela antes de la puesta de sol,
27 for that is his only covering, that, is his mantle, for his skin, —wherein shall he sleep? and it shall come to pass when he maketh outcry unto me, then will I hear because, gracious, I am.
porque es la única ropa que tiene para su cuerpo. ¿De otro modo, con qué dormirá? Y si me pide ayuda, le escucharé, porque soy misericordioso.
28 God, shalt thou not revile, —and a prince among thy people, shalt thou not curse.
“No desprecies a Dios ni maldigas al líder de tu pueblo.
29 Thy fulness and thine outflow, shalt thou not delay, —the firstborn of thy sons, shalt thou give to me.
“No retengas las ofrendas requeridas de tus productos, aceite de oliva y vino. Debes darme el primogénito de tus hijos.
30 Thus, shalt thou do with thine ox with thy sheep, —seven days, shall it be with its dam, on the eighth day, shalt thou give it to me.
También debes darme el primogénito de tus vacas, ovejas y cabras. Podrás dejarlos con sus madres durante los primeros siete días, pero debes darmelos al octavo día.
31 Holy men, therefore shall ye truly become to me, —and flesh in the field torn to pieces, shall ye not eat, to the dogs, shall ye cast it.
“Ustedes deben ser un pueblo santo para mí. No coman ningún cadáver de animal que encuentren en el campo y que haya sido asesinado por animales salvajes. Láncenlos a los perros para que se lo coman”.
