Exodus 17
1 And all the assembly of the sons of Israel set forward out of the desert of Sin, by their removings, at the bidding of Yahweh, —and encamped in Rephidim, and there was no water for the people to drink.
Et toute l'assemblée des enfants d'Israël partit du désert de Sin, faisant leurs stations selon l'ordre de l'Éternel, et ils vinrent camper à Raphidim; et il n'y avait point d'eau à boire pour le peuple.
2 And the people found fault with Moses, and said—Give us water, that we may drink. And Moses said to them, Why should ye find fault with me? Why should ye put Yahweh to the proof?
Alors le peuple querella Moïse et dit: Donnez -nous de l'eau à boire! Et Moïse leur dit: Pourquoi me querellez-vous? Pourquoi tentez-vous l'Éternel?
3 So the people thirsted, there for water, and the people murmured against Moses, —and said—Wherefore is it that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill me and my sons and my cattle, with thirst?
Et là le peuple avait soif d'eau et murmurait contre Moïse et disait: Pourquoi nous as-tu amenés ici de l'Egypte pour me faire mourir, moi et mes fils et mes troupeaux, de soif!
4 And Moses made outcry unto Yahweh saying, What am I to do, with this people? Yet a little, and they will stone me.
Alors Moïse éleva ses cris vers l'Éternel et dit: Comment m'y prendrai-je avec ce peuple? peu s'en faut qu'on ne me lapide.
5 Then said Yahweh unto Moses—Pass over before the people, and take with thee some of the elders of Israel, —thy staff also wherewith thou didst smite the river, take thou in thy hand, so shalt thou go thy way.
Et l'Éternel dit à Moïse: Passe devant le peuple, et prends avec toi des Anciens d'Israël, et prends en ta main le bâton dont tu as frappé le Nil, puis va.
6 Behold me! standing before thee, there upon the rock in Horeb, then shalt thou smite the rock and there shall come forth therefrom water, and the people shall drink. And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel.
Voici, je me tiendrai devant toi là sur un rocher d'Horeb, et tu frapperas le rocher, et il en sortira de l'eau, et le peuple boira. Et c'est ce que Moïse exécuta en présence des Anciens d'Israël.
7 So he called the name of the place, Massah, and Meribah, —because of the fault-finding of the sons of Israel, and because of their putting Yahweh to the proof, saying, Is Yahweh in our midst or is he not?
Et l'on donna à ce lieu le nom de Massa et Mériba (tentation et querelle), à cause de la querelle faite par les enfants d'Israël, et parce qu'ils avaient tenté l'Éternel en disant: L'Éternel est-Il ou non au milieu de nous?
8 Then came in Amalek, —and fought with Israel, in Rephidim.
Et Amalek vint attaquer Israël à Raphidim.
9 And Moses said unto Joshua—Choose for us men, and go forth, fight with Amalek, —to-morrow, am, I, stationing myself upon the top of the hill, with the staff of God in my hand.
Alors Moïse dit à Josué: Choisis-nous des hommes, et pars et combats Amalek; demain je me tiendrai sur le sommet de la colline, le bâton de Dieu à la main.
10 So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, to fight with Amalek, —and Moses, Aaron and Hur, went up to the top of the hill.
Et Josué se conforma à l'ordre que lui donnait Moïse de combattre Amalek. Et Moïse, Aaron et Hur montèrent au sommet de la colline.
11 And it shall be when Moses shall lift on high his hands, then shall Israel prevail, but when he shall let down his hands, then shall Amalek prevail.
Et il arrivait que quand Moïse avait la main élevée, Israël l'emportait, et que dès qu'il baissait la main, Amalek l'emportait.
12 But, the hands of Moses, were weary, so they took a stone, and put under him, and he sat thereupon, —and, Aaron and Hur, upheld his hands—on this side, one and on that side, one, and so his hands became steady, until the going in of the sun.
Mais les mains de Moïse se fatiguèrent; alors ils prirent une pierre qu'ils mirent sous lui, et il s'assit dessus, et Aaron et Hur soutinrent ses mains, l'un par-ci, l'autre par-là, et ainsi, ses mains tinrent ferme jusqu'au coucher du soleil.
13 So Joshua overthrew Amalek and his people, with the edge of the sword.
Et Josué fit tomber Amalek et son peuple sous le tranchant de l'épée.
14 Then said Yahweh unto Moses—Write this as a remembrancer in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua—that I will, wipe out, the remembrance of Amalek, from under the heavens.
Alors l'Éternel dit à Moïse: Écris ceci en souvenir dans le livre, et confie aux oreilles de Josué que j'effacerai la mémoire d'Amalek sous le ciel.
15 And Moses built an altar, —and called the name thereof, Yahweh-nissi.
Et Moïse bâtit un autel auquel il donna le nom de Éternel ma bannière,
16 And he said—Because of a hand against the throne of Yah, Yahweh hath war with Amalek, —from generation to generation!
et dit: La main à la bannière de l'Éternel! guerre de l'Éternel avec Amalek d'âge en âge!
