Esther 1
1 And it came to pass, in the days of Ahasuerus, —the same, Ahasuerus that reigned from India even unto Ethiopia, a hundred and twenty-seven provinces:
Dans les jours d’Assuérus, qui régna depuis l’Inde jusqu’à l’Ethiopie sur cent vingt-sept provinces,
2 in those days, —when King Ahasuerus was sitting on the throne of his kingdom, which was in Shusan the palace;
Quand il s’assit sur le trône de son royaume, Suse était la première ville de son royaume.
3 in the third year of his reign, he made a banquet unto all his rulers, and his servants, —the power of Persia and Media, the nobles and the rulers being before him;
Or, à la troisième année de son règne, il fit un grand festin à tous les princes de sa cour et à ses serviteurs, aux plus braves des Perses, aux illustres des Mèdes, et aux gouverneurs des provinces, en sa présence,
4 when he showed the riches of the glory of his kingdom, and the splendour of his excellent majesty, many days, a hundred and eighty days;
Pour montrer les richesses de la gloire de son empire, et la grandeur et le faste de sa puissance, pendant longtemps, c’est-à-dire cent quatre-vingts jours.
5 that, when these days were fulfilled, the king made—for all the people that were present in Shusan the palace, both for great and small—a banquet, seven days, —in the court of the garden of the palace of the king:
Et lorsque les jours du festin furent accomplis, il invita tout le peuple qui se trouva dans Suse, depuis le plus grand jusqu’au plus petit, et il commanda que pendant sept jours on préparât un festin dans le vestibule de son jardin et du bois qui avait été planté par la magnificence et la main des rois.
6 white stuff, cotton and blue, being held fast with cords of fine linen and purple, upon rods of silver, and pillars of white marble, —the couches being of gold and silver, upon a pavement of alabaster and white marble, and pearl and black marble.
Et de tous côtés étaient suspendues des tentures bleu céleste, d’un lin très fin couleur d’hyacinthe, soutenues par des cordons de fin lin et de pourpre, qui étaient passés dans des anneaux d’ivoire, et attachés à des colonnes de marbre. De plus, des lits d’or et d’argent étaient rangés sur un pavé d’émeraude et de marbre de Paros; ce qu’une peinture d’une admirable variété embellissait.
7 And they gave them drink in vessels of gold, vessels, from vessels, being diverse, —even the wine of the kingdom in abundance, by the bounty of the king.
Or ceux qui avaient été invités buvaient dans des coupes d’or, et les mets étaient présentés dans des plats toujours différents. Le vin aussi était servi comme il convenait à la magnificence royale, abondant et exquis.
8 And, the drinking, was according to the law, no one compelling, —for, so, had the king appointed unto every chief of his household, that every man, should do according to his pleasure.
Et il n’y avait personne qui contraignît à boire ceux qui ne le voulaient pas; mais il en fut comme le roi l’avait établi, en préposant à chaque table un des grands de sa cour, afin que chacun prît ce qu’il voudrait.
9 Also Vashti the queen, made a banquet for the women, —in the royal house which belonged to King Ahasuerus.
La reine Vasthi aussi fit un festin de femmes, dans le palais où le roi Assuérus avait coutume de demeurer.
10 On the seventh day, when merry was the heart of the king with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar and Carcas, the seven eunuchs who were waiting before King Ahasuerus, —
Ainsi au septième jour, lorsque le roi était plus gai, et qu’après avoir bu avec excès, il se fut échauffé par le vin, il ordonna à Maümam, Bazatha, Harbona, Bagatha, Abgatha, Zéthar et Charchas, les sept eunuques qui servaient en sa présence,
11 to bring in Vashti the queen, with the royal crown, —to show the peoples and the rulers her beauty, for, of pleasing appearance, was she.
D’introduire devant le roi la reine Vasthi, le diadème posé sur sa tête, pour montrer au peuple et aux grands de la cour sa beauté; car elle était très belle.
12 But Queen Vashti refused to come in at the command of the king, which was given through the eunuchs, —and the king was exceeding wroth, and, his anger, burned within him.
Vasthi refusa, et dédaigna de venir à l’ordre que le roi lui avait intimé par les eunuques. De là le roi irrité et enflammé d’une extrême fureur
13 Then said the king unto the wise men having knowledge of the times, —for, so, was the manner of the king before all having knowledge of law and judgment;
Demanda aux sages qui, selon l’usage des rois, étaient toujours près de lui, et par le conseil desquels il faisait toutes choses, parce qu’ils savaient les lois et le droit des anciens,
14 and, near unto him, were Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, Memucan, —the seven rulers of Persia and Media, who used to behold the face of the king, who sat first, in the kingdom—
(Or les premiers et les plus proches étaient Charséna, Séthar, Admatha, Tharsis, Marès, Marsana et Mamuchan, les sept chefs des Perses et des Mèdes, qui voyaient la face du roi, et avaient coutume de s’asseoir les premiers après lui.)
15 According to law, what ought to be done, with Queen Vashti, —for that she hath not performed the command of King Ahasuerus, through the eunuchs?
Quelle sentence méritait la reine Vasthi, qui n’avait pas voulu exécuter l’ordre que le roi Assuérus lui avait intimé par les eunuques.
16 Then said Memucan before the king and the rulers, Not against the king alone, hath Vashti the queen acted perversely, —but against all the rulers, and against all the peoples, who are in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus.
Et Mamuchan répondit, le roi l’entendant, et les grands de la cour: Ce n’est pas seulement le roi qu’a offensé la reine Vasthi, mais encore tous les peuples et tous les grands qui sont dans toutes les provinces du roi Assuérus;
17 For the report of the queen, will go forth, unto all women, so putting contempt upon their lords, in their eyes, —when it is reported to them, King Ahasuerus, commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she came not.
Car la parole de la reine parviendra à toutes les femmes, de manière qu’elles mépriseront leurs maris, et qu’elles diront: Le roi Assuérus a commandé que la reine Vasthi entrât auprès de lui; et elle n’a pas voulu.
18 And, this day, shall the ladies of Persia and Media, who have heard the report of the queen, tell it, unto all the lords of the king, —with enough of contempt and wrath.
Et d’après cet exemple toutes les femmes des princes des Perses et des Mèdes feront peu de cas des ordres de leurs maris; c’est pourquoi l’indignation du roi est juste.
19 If, unto the king, it seem good, let there go forth a royal declaration from before him, and let it be written among the laws of Persia and Media, so that it shall not pass away, —That Vashti, is not to come in, before King Ahasuerus, and, her royal estate, let the king give unto her neighbour, who is better than she.
S’il vous plaît ainsi, qu’un édit émane de vous, et qu’il soit écrit, selon la loi des Perses et des Mèdes, qu’il n’est jamais permis d’enfreindre, que Vasthi n’entrera jamais plus auprès du roi; que quant à sa dignité de reine, une autre plus digne qu’elle la recevra.
20 When the edict of the king which he shall make, is published throughout all his kingdom, for, great, it is, then, all wives, will give honour unto their lords, both great and small.
Et que cet édit soit publié dans toutes les provinces de votre empire (qui est très étendu), afin que toutes les femmes, tant des grands que des petits, rendent honneur à leurs maris.
21 And the thing seemed good in the eyes of the king, and the rulers, —and the king did according to the word of Memucan.
Le conseil de Mamuchan plut au roi et aux grands de la cour; et le roi agit d’après ce conseil,
22 So he sent letters, into all the provinces of the king, into every province according to she writing thereof, and unto every people according to their tongue, —That every man should he ruler in his own house, and issue his commands, according to the tongue of his people.
Et il envoya des lettres à toutes les provinces de son royaume, de manière que chaque nation pouvait entendre et lire, en diverses langues et en divers caractères, que les maris étaient les chefs et les maîtres dans leurs maisons, et que cela était publié parmi tous les peuples.
