Deuteronomy 7
1 When Yahweh thy God shall bring thee into the land which thou art going in to possess, and shall clear away many nations from before thee—the Hittites and the Girgashites and the Amorites, and the Canaanites and the Perizzites, and the Hivites and the Jebusites—seven nations greater in number and stronger than thou;
Lorsque le Seigneur ton Dieu t’aura introduit dans la terre dans laquelle tu entres pour la posséder, et qu’il aura détruit beaucoup de nations devant toi, l’Héthéen, le Gergézéen, l’Amorrhéen, le Chananéen, le Phérézéen, l’Hévéen et le Jébuséen, sept nations beaucoup plus nombreuses que toi et beaucoup plus fortes que toi,
2 and Yahweh thy God shall deliver them up before thee, and thou shalt smite them, thou shalt devote them to destruction, thou shalt not solemnise with them a covenant neither shalt thou shew them favour;
Et que le Seigneur ton Dieu te les aura livrées, tu les battras jusqu’à une entière extermination. Tu ne feras point d’alliance avec elles, et tu n’auras pas pitié d’elles;
3 neither shalt thou intermarry with them, —thy daughter, shalt thou not give unto his son, nor his daughter, shalt thou take for thy son;
Tu ne contracteras pas non plus de mariages avec elles. Tu ne donneras point ta fille à son fils, et tu n’accepteras pas sa fille pour ton fils,
4 for he will turn aside thy son from following me, and they will serve other gods, —so shall the anger of Yahweh kindle upon you, and he will destroy thee, speedily.
Parce qu’elle persuadera à ton fils de ne pas me suivre, et de servir plutôt des dieux étrangers; ainsi s’irritera la fureur du Seigneur, et il te perdra soudain.
5 Verily, thus, shall ye do unto them: Their altars, shall ye tear down, And their pillars, shall ye break in pieces, —And their sacred stems, shall ye hew down, And their carved images, shall ye burn up in the fire.
Mais au contraire, voici ce que vous leur ferez: Renversez leurs autels, brisez leurs statues, coupez leurs bois sacrés, et brûlez leurs images taillées au ciseau:
6 For a holy people, art thou unto Yahweh thy God: of thee, hath Yahweh thy God, made choice, that thou shouldest become his people as a treasure, above all the peoples that are on the face of the ground:
Parce que tu es un peuple consacré au Seigneur ton Dieu. C’est toi qu’a choisi le Seigneur ton Dieu, afin que tu sois son peuple particulier entre tous les peuples qui sont sur la terre.
7 not because ye were more in number than any of the peoples, did Yahweh become attached to you and make choice of you, —for, ye, were fewer than any of the peoples;
Ce n’est pas parce que vous l’emportiez par le nombre sur toutes les nations, que le Seigneur s’est uni à vous, et vous a choisis, puisque vous êtes moins nombreux que tous les peuples;
8 but because Yahweh loved you and because he would keep the oath which he sware unto your fathers, did Yahweh bring you forth with a firm hand, —and redeem thee out of the house of servants, out of the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
Mais c’est parce que le Seigneur vous a aimés et qu’il a gardé le serment qu’il a juré à vos pères; c’est pour cela qu’il vous a retirés de l’Egypte par une main puissante, et qu’il vous a délivrés de la maison de servitude, de la main de Pharaon, roi d’Egypte.
9 So then, thou must know that, Yahweh thy God, he, is God, —the faithful GOD, keeping his covenant and his lovingkindness with them that love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations
Ainsi, tu sauras que le Seigneur ton Dieu est lui-même le Dieu fort et fidèle, gardant son alliance et sa miséricorde à ceux qui l’aiment, et à ceux qui gardent ses préceptes, jusqu’à mille générations;
10 but requiting them who hate him unto his face to destroy them, —he will not be slack towards him that hateth him, unto his face, will he requite him.
Et rendant soudain à ceux qui le haïssent, en sorte qu’il les détruit, et ne diffère pas, leur rendant sur-le-champ ce qu’ils méritent.
11 So shalt thou keep the commandment and the statutes and the regulations, which I am commanding thee to-day, to do them.
Garde donc les préceptes, les cérémonies et les ordonnances que moi, je te commande aujourd’hui de pratiquer.
12 Then shall it come to pass if ye will hearken unto these regulations, and keep and do them, then will Yahweh thy God keep with thee the covenant and the lovingkindness which he sware unto thy fathers;
Si, après avoir entendu ces ordonnances, tu les gardes et les pratiques, le Seigneur ton Dieu aussi te gardera l’alliance et la miséricorde qu’il a jurée à tes pères;
13 and will love thee, and bless thee and multiply thee, —and bless the fruit of thy body and the fruit of thy ground thy corn and thy new wine and thine oil the young of thy kine and the ewes of thy flock, upon the soil which he swart unto thy fathers to give unto thee.
Il t’aimera, il te multipliera, il bénira les enfants, et le fruit de ta terre, ton blé et tes vignes, ton huile et ton gros bétail, les troupeaux de tes brebis dans la terre, au sujet de laquelle il a juré à tes pères qu’il te la donnerait.
14 Blessed shalt thou be beyond all the peoples, —there shall not be in thee a barren male or female, nor among thy cattle;
Car tu seras béni entre tous les peuples. Il n’y aura pas chez toi de stérile de l’un et de l’autre sexe, tant dans les hommes que dans tes troupeaux.
15 and Yahweh, will turn away, from thee, all disease, —and as for all the sore sicknesses of Egypt which thou knowest, he will not lay them upon thee, but will put them upon all who hate thee;
Le Seigneur éloignera de toi toute langueur; et les infirmités terribles de l’Egypte que tu connais, il ne te les apportera pas, à toi, mais à tous tes ennemis.
16 and thou shalt devour all the peoples whom, Yahweh thy God, is delivering up unto thee, thine eye shall not look with pity upon them, neither shalt thou serve their gods, for a snare, would it be unto thee.
Tu dévoreras tous les peuples que le Seigneur ton Dieu doit te donner. Ton œil ne les ménagera pas, et tu ne serviras point leurs dieux, afin qu’ils ne soient pas pour toi une ruine.
17 Although thou mightest say in thy heart: More in number, are these nations than I, —how can, I dispossess them?
Si tu dis en ton cœur: Ces nations sont plus nombreuses que moi; comment pourrai-je les détruire?
18 thou must not be afraid of them, —thou must, remember, what Yahweh thy God did, unto Pharaoh and unto all Egypt:
Ne crains point, mais rappelle-toi ce qu’a fait le Seigneur ton Dieu à Pharaon et à tous les Egyptiens,
19 the great provings which thine own eyes saw, and the signs and the wonders and the firm hand and the stretched-out arm, wherewith Yahweh thy God brought thee forth, —so, will Yahweh thy God do unto all the peoples, before whom thou art afraid.
Les très grandes plaies, qu’ont vues tes yeux, les signes et les prodiges, la main forte et le bras étendu, pour que le Seigneur ton Dieu te retirât de l’Egypte: ainsi fera-t-il à tous les peuples que tu redoutes.
20 Moreover also, the hornet, will Yahweh thy God send among them, —until they are destroyed who are left remaining, and who are hiding themselves from thy face.
De plus, le Seigneur ton Dieu enverra aussi les frelons contre eux, jusqu’à ce qu’il détruise et perde entièrement tous ceux qui t’auront échappé et qui auront pu se cacher.
21 Thou shalt not be affrighted at their presence, —for Yahweh thy God in thy midst is a Go great and to be revered.
Tu ne les craindras point, parce que le Seigneur ton Dieu est au milieu de toi, Dieu grand et terrible.
22 So will Yahweh thy God, clear away these nations from before thee little by little, —thou mayest not consume them at once, lest the wild beast of the field should multiply ever thee.
Lui-même, il exterminera ces nations en ta présence, peu à peu et par parties. Tu ne pourras pas les détruire toutes à la fois, de peur que les bêtes de la terre ne se multiplient contre toi.
23 But Yahweh thy God will deliver them up before thee, —and discomfit them with a great discomfiture, until they are destroyed;
Mais le Seigneur ton Dieu les mettra en ta présence, et il les fera mourir jusqu’à ce qu’ils soient entièrement détruits.
24 and will deliver their kings into thy hand and thou shalt destroy their name, from under the heavens, —not a man shall stand before thee, until thou hast destroyed them.
Et il livrera leurs rois en tes mains, et tu extermineras leurs noms de dessous le ciel; nul ne pourra te résister, jusqu’à ce que tu les aies brisés.
25 The carved images of their gods, shalt thou consume with fire, —thou shalt not covet the silver and gold upon them to take unto thee, lest thou be ensnared thereby; for the abomination of Yahweh thy God, it is;
Tu brûleras au feu leurs images taillées au ciseau; tu ne convoiteras point l’argent et l’or dont elles ont été faites, et tu n’en prendras rien pour toi, de peur que tu ne tombes dans un piège, parce que c’est l’abomination du Seigneur ton Dieu.
26 and thou shalt not bring an abomination into thy house, and so become devoted to destruction, like it, thou shalt, abhor, it, and thou shalt, loathe it, because a thing devoted to destruction, it is.
Et tu ne porteras rien de l’idole dans ta maison, afin que tu ne deviennes pas anathème, comme elle-même l’est. Tu la détesteras comme de la fange, et tu l’auras en abomination comme de la souillure et des ordures, parce que c’est un anathème.
