Deuteronomy 4
1 Now, therefore, O Israel, hearken thou unto the statutes, and unto the regulations, which, I, am teaching you, to do [them], —to the end ye may live and enter and possess the land, which, Yahweh, the God of your fathers, is giving unto you.
Nun aber höre, Israel, die Satzungen und die Rechte, die ich euch lehre, daß ihr darnach thun sollt, damit ihr am Leben bleibt und in den Besitz des Landes gelangt, das Jahwe, der Gott eurer Väter, euch verleihen will.
2 Ye shall not add unto the word which, I, am commanding you, neither shall ye take away therefrom, —that ye may keep the commandments of Yahweh your God, which, I, am commanding you.
Ihr sollt zu den Geboten, die ich euch gebe, weder etwas hinzufügen, noch etwas davon wegnehmen; sondern ihr sollt die Gebote Jahwes, eures Gottes, die ich euch gebe, befolgen.
3 Yours are the eyes, that have seen what Yahweh did in Baal-peor, for every man who went after Baal-peor, did Yahweh thy God destroy out of thy midst;
Mit eigenen Augen konntet ihr sehen, was Jahwe wegen des Baal-Peor gethan hat: Alle die, welche dem Baal-Peor nachliefen, hat Jahwe, euer Gott, aus eurer Mitte hinweggetilgt;
4 but, ye who kept on cleaving unto Yahweh your God, alive, are ye all to-day.
ihr aber, die ihr treulich an Jahwe, eurem Gotte, festhieltet, seid heute noch alle am Leben.
5 See! I have taught you statutes, and regulations, as Yahweh my God commanded me, —that ye should do so, in the midst of the land whereinto ye are entering to possess it.
Merkt euch, ich habe euch Satzungen und Rechte gelehrt, wie mir Jahwe, mein Gott, befohlen hat, damit ihr darnach thut dort in dem Land, in das ihr zieht, um es in Besitz zu nehmen.
6 Therefore shall ye observe, and do [them], for that, will be your wisdom, and discernment, in the eyes of the peoples, —who will hear all these statutes, and will say—Nevertheless, a people wise and discerning, is this great nation.
Beobachtet und befolgt sie! Denn daß wird auch in den Augen der anderen Völker eure Weisheit und Klugheit ausmachen; wenn sie von allen diesen Satzungen hören, werden sie sprechen: Wahrlich, ein weises und kluges Volk ist diese große Nation!
7 For what great nation is there which hath gods nigh unto it, —like Yahweh our God, whensoever we have cried out unto him.
Denn wo wäre irgend eine große Nation, die einen Gott hätte, der ihr so nahe ist, wie uns Jahwe, unser Gott, so oft wir ihn anrufen?
8 Or what great nation which hath righteous statutes and regulations, like all this law, which, I, am setting before you to-day?
Und wo wäre irgend eine große Nation, die so vollkommene Satzungen und Rechte besäße, wie dieses ganze Gesetz, das ich euch heute vorlege?
9 Only take thou heed to thyself and keep thy soul diligently, so that thou forget not the things which thine own eyes have seen, and so that they go not out of thy heart, all the days of thy life, —but thou shalt make them known unto thy sons and unto thy sons’ sons: —
Nur hüte dich und nimm dich wohl in acht, daß du die Dinge, welche du mit eigenen Augen gesehen hast, nicht vergessest, und daß sie dir Zeit deines Lebens nicht aus dem Sinne kommen; sondern thue sie deinen Kindern und Kindeskindern kund.
10 What day thou didst stand before Yahweh thy God, in Horeb, when Yahweh said unto me, Gather unto me the people, that I may let them hear my words, —which they must learn that they may revere me all the days which they are living upon the soil, their children also, must they teach.
Vergiß nicht den Tag, da du am Horeb vor Jahwe, deinem Gotte, standest, als mir Jahwe befahl: Versammle mir das Volk! Ich will sie meine Worte vernehmen lassen, damit sie mich fürchten lernen die ganze Zeit, während sie auf dem Erdboden leben, und sie auch ihre Kinder lehren.
11 So ye drew near and stood, under the mountain. Now, the mountain, was burning with fire, up to the midst of the heavens, —darkness, cloud, and thick gloom.
Da tratet ihr herzu und stelltet euch am Fuße des Berges auf; der Berg aber stand in hellem Feuer bis in den Himmel hinein, während im Übrigen Finsternis, Gewölk und Dunkelheit war.
12 Then spake Yahweh unto you out of the midst of the fire, —a voice of words, ye were hearing, no form, were ye seeing, there was only a voice.
Jahwe redete zu euch mitten aus dem Feuer heraus; den Schall der Worte hörtet ihr, nur den Schall allein, eine Gestalt aber konntet ihr nicht wahrnehmen.
13 Then declared he unto you his covenant which he commanded you to do, the ten words, —and wrote them upon two tables of stone.
Er verkündete euch seinen Bund, den er euch zu halten gebot, die zehn Worte, und schrieb sie auf zwei steinerne Tafeln.
14 And unto me, gave Yahweh command, at that time, to teach you statutes and regulations, —that ye should do them, in the land whereinto ye are passing over to possess it.
Mir aber trug Jahwe damals auf, euch Satzungen und Rechte zu lehren, damit ihr darnach thätet in dem Land, in das ihr hinüberziehen werdet, um es in Besitz zu nehmen.
15 Ye must take diligent heed, therefore unto your own souls, for ye saw no manner of form, on the day Yahweh spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire;
So nehmt euch nun - es gilt euer Leben! wohl in acht, da ihr am Tag, als Jahwe am Horeb aus dem Feuer zu euch redete, keinerlei Gestalt gesehen habt,
16 lest ye should break faith, and make you an image, a form of any likeness, —a model of male or female;
daß ihr nicht so verderbt handelt und euch ein Schnitzbild in Gestalt irgend welches Standbildes verfertigt, sei es die Figur eines männlichen oder eines weiblichen Wesens,
17 a model of any beast that is in the earth, —a model of any winged bird, that flieth in the heavens;
die Figur irgend welches vierfüßigen Tiers auf Erden oder die Figur irgend welches beschwingten Vogels, der am Himmel fliegt,
18 a model of any thing that creepeth on the ground, —a model of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth;
die Figur irgend eines Tiers, das auf dem Erdboden umherkriecht, oder die Figur irgend eines Fisches, der sich im Wasser unter der Erde befindet,
19 or lest thou shouldest lift up thine eyes towards the heavens and see the sun and the moon, and the stars—all the host of the heavens, and shouldest be seduced, and shouldest bow thyself down to them and he led to serve them, —the which Yahweh thy God hath assigned unto all the peoples under all the heavens;
und das du, wenn du deine Blicke gen Himmel schweifen Iässest und die Sonne, den Mond und die Sterne, das ganze Heer des Himmels, betrachtest, dich nicht dazu verleiten lässest, dich vor ihnen niederzuwerfen und ihnen Verehrung zu bezeigen. Denn Jahwe, dein Gott, hat sie allen Völkern unter allen Himmelsstrichen zugeteilt;
20 whereas you, hath Yahweh taken, and brought you forth out of a smelting-pot of iron, out of Egypt, —that ye might become his own inherited people as at this day.
euch aber hat Jahwe genommen und euch aus dem Eisenschmelzofen, aus Ägypten, herausgeführt, daß ihr ein Volk würdet, das ihm besonders zu eigen gehört, wie es jetzt der Fall ist.
21 But, Yahweh shewed himself angry with me, for your sakes, —and sware that I should not pass over the Jordan, and that I should not enter into the good land, which, Yahweh thy God, is giving unto thee as an inheritance;
Über mich aber war Jahwe um euretwillen so zornig geworden, daß er schwur, ich solle nicht den Jordan überschreiten und nicht das schöne Land betreten, das dir Jahwe, dein Gott, zum Eigentume geben will;
22 for, I, am about to die in this land, I am not to pass over the Jordan, —but, ye, are to pass over, and possess this good land.
sondern ich werde in diesem Lande sterben, ohne den Jordan überschritten zu haben. Ihr aber werdet hinüberziehn, um dieses schöne Land in Besitz zu nehmen.
23 Take heed to yourselves lest ye forget the covenant of Yahweh your God, which he hath solemnised with you, —and so make for yourselves an image, the form of anything, the which Yahweh thy God hath forbidden thee;
Seid auf eurer Hut, daß ihr nicht des Bundes, den Jahwe, euer Gott, mit euch geschlossen hat, vergesset und euch ein Schnitzbild in der Gestalt von irgend etwas anfertigt, was dir Jahwe, dein Gott, verboten hat.
24 seeing that as for Yahweh thy God, a consuming fire, he is, —a jealous GOD.
Denn Jahwe, dein Gott, ist ein verzehrendes Feuer, ein eifriger Gott!
25 When thou shalt beget sons, and sons’ sons, and become careless in the land and break faith and make an image the form of any thing, and shalt do the thing that is wicked in the eyes of Yahweh thy God provoking him to anger,
Wenn ihr, nachdem dir Kinder und Kindeskinder geboren sind, und ihr längst eingelebt seid im Lande, verderbt handeln solltet, indem ihr euch ein Schnitzbild in Gestalt von irgend etwas anfertigt und euch so gegen Jahwe, euren Gott, versündigtet, so daß er erzürnt würde,
26 I take both the heavens and the earth to witness against you to-day, that ye shall, perish, speedily, from off the land which ye are passing over the Jordan to possess, —ye shall not prolong your days thereupon; for, ye shall surely be laid waste;
so nehme ich heute den Himmel und die Erde zu Zeugen gegen euch, daß ihr dann schIeunigst aus dem Lande vertilgt werden sollt, in das ihr über den Jordan hinüberziehen werdet, um es in Besitz zu nehmen. Ihr werdet dann nicht eine lange Reihe von Jahren darin bleiben, sondern gänzlich daraus vertilgt werden.
27 and Yahweh will scatter you among the peoples, —and ye shall have left remaining of you men easily counted, among the nations whither Yahweh will drive you;
Und zwar wird euch Jahwe unter die Völker zerstreuen, und nur eine geringe Zahl von euch wird übrig bleiben unter den Nationen, unter welche euch Jahwe wegführen wird.
28 and ye will serve there gods made by the hands of man, —wood or stone, which neither see nor hear nor eat nor smell.
Dort werdet ihr Götter verehren, die von Menschenhänden gemacht sind, hölzerne und steinerne, die weder sehen noch hören, weder essen noch riechen können.
29 If thou shalt seek from thence, Yahweh thy God, then shalt thou find him, —when thou shalt search after him with all thy heart, and with all thy soul.
Dort wirst du dann Jahwe, deinen Gott, suchen und wirst ihn finden, wenn du von ganzem Herzen und von ganzer Seele nach ihm verlangst.
30 In thy distress, when all these things have found thee out—in the afterpart of the days, thou wilt return unto Yahweh thy God, and wilt hearken to his voice.
In deiner Not, wenn dich alles dies betroffen haben wird, wirst du dich in der darauf folgenden Zeit zu Jahwe, deinem Gotte, bekehren und auf seine Stimme hören.
31 For, a GOD of compassion, is Yahweh thy God, he will not forsake thee neither will he destroy thee, —nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.
Denn Jahwe, dein Gott, ist ein barmherziger Gott; er wird dich nicht fahren lassen und will nicht dein Verderben, und er wird des Bundes mit deinen Vätern nicht vergessen, den er ihnen eidlich bekräftigt hat.
32 For ask, I pray you, of the former days which were before thee, even from the day when God created man upon the earth, yea from one end of the heavens even to the other end of the heavens, —whether aught was ever brought to pass, like this great thing, or was ever heard of like it:
Denn frage doch in den früheren Zeiten nach, die vor dir gewesen sind, seit der Zeit, wo Gott Menschen auf der Erde erschaffen hat, und von einem Ende des Himmels bis zum andern, ob je so große Dinge geschehen sind, oder ob je dergleichen gehört wurde!
33 Did a people ever hear the voice of a god speaking out of the midst of fire, as, thou, didst hear, and yet live?
Ob jemals ein Volk Gott vernehmlich mitten aus dem Feuer heraus reden hörte, wie du es gehört hast, und am Leben blieb!
34 Or did a god ever make trial of entering in to take unto him a nation out of the midst of a nation, by provings, by signs and by wonders and by fighting, and by a firm hand and by a stretched-out arm, and by great terrors, —according to all that Yahweh your God did for you in Egypt, before your eyes?
Oder ob je ein Gott auch nur den Versuch gemacht hat, auf Erden zu kommen, um sich mit Machterweisen, Zeichen und Wundern, mit Krieg, mit starker Hand und ausgerecktem Arm und mit erstaunlicher Gewalt eine Nation aus der Mitte einer andern herauszuholen, wie es doch Jahwe, euer Gott, vor deinen Augen in Ägypten mit euch gethan hat!
35 Thou, wast allowed to see that thou mightest know, that Yahweh, he is God, there is none other than he alone.
Du hast solches zu sehen bekommen, damit du erkennen solltest, daß Jahwe der wahre Gott ist, daß es außer ihm keinen giebt.
36 Out of the heavens, he let thee hear his voice to instruct thee, —and, upon the earth, he let thee see his great fire, and his own words, thou didst hear out of the midst of the fire.
Vom Himmel her lies er dich seine Stimme hören, um dich zurecht zu leiten, und auf der Erde ließ er dich sein großes Feuer sehen, und aus dem Feuer heraus hast du seine Worte vernommen.
37 And because that he loved thy fathers, therefore chose he his seed after him, —and brought thee forth with his presence with his great might, out of Egypt;
Zum Danke dafür, daß er deine Väter lieb gewonnen und ihre Nachkommen nach ihnen erwählt und dich in eigener Person mit seiner großen Kraft auf Ägypten hinweggeführt hat,
38 to dispossess nations, greater and stronger than thou from before thee, —to bring thee in. to give unto thee their land for an inheritance: As at this day.
in der Absicht, Völker, die größer und stärker sind, als du, vor dir zu vertreiben, damit er dich in ihr Land bringe und es dir zum Eigentume gebe, wie es jetzt geschieht, -
39 So then thou must consider to-day, and bring it back to thy heart, that, Yahweh, he is God in the heavens above and upon the earth beneath, —there is none other.
sollst du jetzt erkennen und dir zu Herzen nehmen, daß Jahwe Gott ist im Himmel droben und drunten auf Erden und keiner sonst,
40 So shalt thou keep his statutes and his commandments which, I, am commanding thee to-day, that it may go well with thee, and with thy sons after thee, —and to the end thou mayest prolong thy days upon the soil, which Yahweh thy God, is giving thee, all the days.
und sollst auch seine Satzungen und Gebote, die ich dir heute gebe, beobachten, damit es dir und deinen Kindern nach dir wohlergehe, und du allezeit lange leben mögest in dem Lande, das dir Jahwe, dein Gott, verleihen will.
41 Then, did Moses set apart three cities, over the Jordan, —towards the rising of the sun:
Damals sonderte Mose in dem jenseits des Jordan gegen Sonnenaufgang gelegenen Gebiete drei Städte aus,
42 that the manslayer might flee thither who should slay his neighbour unawares, he, not having hated him, aforetime, —and might flee unto one of these cities, and live:
damit ein solcher, der etwa seinen Nächsten unvorsätzlich und ohne daß er ihm schon längst feind war, getötet hätte, sich dorthin flüchten und durch die Flucht in eine dieser Städte sein Leben retten könnte:
43 namely Bezer, in the desert of the table-land, for the Reubenites, —and Ramoth in Gilead for the Gadites, and Golan in Bashan, for the Manassites.
Bezer in der Steppe auf der Hochebene für die Rubeniten, Ramoth in Gilead für die Gaditen und Golan in Basan für die Manassiten.
44 This, then is the law which Moses set before the sons of Israel:
Und dies ist das Gesetz, das Mose den Israeliten vorlegte.
45 These, are the testimonies, and the statutes and the regulations, —which Moses spake unto the sons of Israel when they came forth out of Egypt:
Dies sind die Verordnungen, Satzungen und Rechte, welche Mose den Israeliten bei ihrem Auszug aus Ägypten verkündigte,
46 over the Jordan in the valley over against Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, —whom Moses and the sons of Israel smote, when they came forth out of Egypt:
jenseits des Jordan im Thale, gegenüber von Beth-Peor im Lande des Amoriterkönigs Sihon, der zu Hesbon wohnte, den Mose und die Israeliten bei ihrem Auszug aus Ägypten besiegt
47 so they took possession of his land, and the land of Og king of Bashan the two kings of the Amorites, who were over the Jordan, —towards the rising of the sun;
und dessen Land sie, wie auch das Land Ogs, des Königs von Basan, erobert hatten, das Land der beiden Amoriterkönige, welche jenseits des Jordan auf der Seite nach Sonnenaufgang herrschten,
48 from Aroer which is on the edge of the ravine of Arnon, even unto Mount Sion, the same, is Hermon;
von Aroer am Ufer des Arnonflusses an bis zum Berge Sion, das ist dem Hermon,
49 and all the waste plain over the Jordan, towards sunrise, even unto the sea of the waste plain, —under the slopes of the Pisgah.
samt der ganzen Steppe auf der Ostseite des Jordan bis zum Meere der Steppe am Fuße der Abhänge des Pisga.
