Deuteronomy 18
1 Neither the priests the Levites [nor] any of the tribe of Levi, shall have either portion or inheritance with Israel, —the altar-flames of Yahweh and his inheritance, shall they eat.
“Vì các thầy tế lễ và toàn thể đại tộc Lê-vi không có một phần đất như các đại tộc khác của Ít-ra-ên, họ sẽ sinh sống bằng các lễ vật người ta đem dâng lên Chúa Hằng Hữu, kể cả lễ vật thiêu trên bàn thờ.
2 But inheritance, shall he not have, in the midst of his brethren, —Yahweh, is his inheritance, as he spake unto him.
Họ không có tài sản như các anh em mình, nhưng chính Chúa Hằng Hữu là sản nghiệp của họ như Ngài đã hứa.
3 This, therefore shall be the due of the priests from the people from them who offer the sacrifice whether ox or lamb, —there shall be given unto the priest, the shoulder and the two cheeks and the maw:
Khi người ta đem dâng một con bò hay một con chiên, phần của thầy tế lễ sẽ gồm có vai, hai gò má, và bụng.
4 the firstfruit of thy corn thy new wine and thine oil and the first of the fleece of thy flock, shalt thou give unto him.
Ngoài ra, thầy tế lễ còn nhận được các lễ vật đầu mùa gồm ngũ cốc, rượu, dầu, và lông chiên.
5 For of him, hath Yahweh thy God made choice out of all thy tribes, —to stand to minister in the name of Yahweh of him and his sons all the days.
Vì Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời của anh em, đã chọn họ trong số các đại tộc Ít-ra-ên để đứng phục vụ Ngài mãi mãi, hết thế hệ này đến thế hệ khác.
6 And when the Levite shall come in out of any of thy gates out of any part of Israel, where he is sojourning, —yea shall come in with all the desire of his soul, into the place which Yahweh shall choose,
Một người Lê-vi, dù đang sống tại bất kỳ một nơi nào trong lãnh thổ Ít-ra-ên, nếu dời đến ở tại thành Chúa Hằng Hữu sẽ chọn.
7 then may he minister in the name of Yahweh his God, —like any of his brethren the Levites who are standing there before Yahweh.
Người ấy luôn luôn được phép phục vụ Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời mình, như tất cả những người Lê-vi khác đang có sứ mệnh phục vụ Chúa Hằng Hữu tại đó.
8 Portion for portion, shall they eat, —apart from his possessions upon his patrimony.
Người này sẽ được chia phần đồng đều với anh em mình, dù người ấy có lợi tức riêng ở nhà.”
9 When thou art coming into the land which Yahweh thy God is giving unto thee, thou shalt not learn to do according to the abominable doings of those nations.
“Khi vào đến đất Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời của anh em ban cho, anh em không được bắt chước những hành động đáng tởm của các dân bản xứ đang sống tại đó.
10 There shall not be found in thy midst—One who causeth his son or his daughter to pass through fire, —Or who useth divination, hidden arts or enchantments Or who muttereth incantations;
Tuyệt đối không ai được thiêu sống con mình để tế thần, không ai được làm nghề thầy bói, giải điềm, phù thủy,
11 Or who bindeth with spells, —Or who asketh of a familiar spirit or an oracle, Or who seeketh unto the dead.
bỏ bùa mê, đồng cốt, thầy pháp, hay thầy chiêu hồn.
12 For, an abomination unto Yahweh, is everyone who doeth these things, —and on account of these abominations, is Yahweh thy God dispossessing them from before thee.
Ai làm những việc này đều bị Chúa Hằng Hữu ghê tởm. Chính vì thế mà Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời của anh em, đuổi những dân tộc kia đi.
13 Blameless, shalt thou be with, Yahweh thy God;
Trước mặt Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời của anh em, anh em phải là người hoàn hảo.
14 for, these nations whom thou art dispossessing, unto them who use hidden arts and unto diviners, do hearken, but as for thee, not so, doth Yahweh thy God suffer thee.
Các dân tộc kia bói toán đủ điều, nhưng Chúa không cho phép anh em làm những điều đó.”
15 A prophet out of thy midst of thy brethren like unto me, will Yahweh thy God, raise up unto thee—unto him, shall ye hearken:
“Nhưng, Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời sẽ dấy lên một Tiên Tri như tôi từ giữa vòng con dân Ít-ra-ên. Anh em phải nghe lời người đó.
16 according to all which thou didst ask of Yahweh thy God, in Horeb, in the day of the convocation saying, —Let me no further hearken unto the voice of Yahweh my God, and this great fire, let me not see any more lest I die.
Đây chính là điều anh em thỉnh cầu Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời của anh em, trong lúc hội họp tại Núi Hô-rếp. Vì sợ chết, nên anh em cầu xin đừng cho nghe tiếng của Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời của anh em, đừng cho thấy lửa cháy hừng hực nữa.
17 And Yahweh said unto me: They have well said what they have spoken.
Lúc ấy, Chúa Hằng Hữu phán cùng tôi: ‘Họ đã xin một điều hợp lý.
18 A prophet, will I raise up unto them, out of the midst of their brethren, like unto thee, —and I will put my words in his mouth, so shall he speak unto them whatsoever I shall command him.
Ta sẽ chọn một người trong Ít-ra-ên, đưa lên làm tiên tri như con. Ta sẽ đặt lời Ta trong miệng người ấy, người ấy sẽ nói cho dân nghe những lời Ta dạy.
19 And it shall come to pass, that, the man who will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I, myself will require it of him.
Khi người ấy nhân danh Ta nói điều gì, ai không vâng lời sẽ bị Ta trừng trị.
20 Howbeit the prophet who shall presume to speak a word in my name which I have not commanded him to speak, or who shall speak in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.
Nhưng nếu một tiên tri nhân danh Ta nói điều gì Ta không bảo nói, hay nhân danh các thần khác để nói tiên tri, người ấy phải chết.’
21 And, when thou shalt say in thy heart, —In what manner shall we know the word which Yahweh hath not spoken!?,
Nếu anh em thắc mắc: ‘Làm sao biết được lời nào của tiên tri nói không phải là lời của Chúa Hằng Hữu?’
22 When the prophet shall speak in the name of Yahweh and the word shall not come to pass, neither shall come in, that, is the word which Yahweh, hath not spoken, —presumptuously, hath the prophet spoken it, thou shall not be in dread of him.
Thì đây, khi một tiên tri nhân danh Chúa Hằng Hữu nói điều gì, nếu việc không xảy ra đúng như thế, lời tiên tri ấy dĩ nhiên không phải do Chúa bảo nói, nhưng tiên tri chỉ nói vì tự phụ. Đừng sợ người ấy.”
