Deuteronomy 17
1 Thou shalt not sacrifice unto Yahweh thy God a bullock or a sheep wherein is a blemish, any unseemly thing: for an abomination unto Yahweh thy God, it would be.
Tu ne sacrifieras pas à l'Éternel, ton Dieu, un bœuf ou un mouton qui présente un défaut ou un mal quelconque, car c'est une abomination pour l'Éternel, ton Dieu.
2 When there shall be found in thy midst, within any of thy gates, which Yahweh thy God is giving unto thee, man or woman who doeth the thing which is wicked in the eyes of Yahweh thy God by transgressing his covenant;
S'il se trouve parmi vous, dans l'une des portes que l'Éternel, votre Dieu, vous donne, un homme ou une femme qui fasse ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Éternel, votre Dieu, en transgressant son alliance,
3 yea hath gone, and served other gods, and bowed down unto them, —whether unto the sun or unto the moon or unto any of the host of the heavens which I have not commanded;
et qui aille servir d'autres dieux et se prosterner devant eux, ou devant le soleil, ou la lune, ou l'une des étoiles du ciel, ce que je n'ai pas ordonné,
4 and it shall be told thee and thou shalt hear, —and shalt enquire diligently, and lo! true—certain, is the report, this abominable thing hath been done in Israel,
et qu'on vous le dise et que vous en entendiez parler, vous vous informerez avec soin. S'il est vrai, et si la chose est certaine, qu'une telle abomination se commet en Israël,
5 then shalt thou bring forth that man or that woman who hath done this wicked thing, within thy gates—the man, or the woman, —and shalt stone them with stones that they die.
tu feras venir à tes portes l'homme ou la femme qui a commis ce crime, cet homme ou cette femme-là, et tu les lapideras.
6 At the mouth of two witnesses or three witnesses, shall he that is to die be put to death, —he shall not be put to death at the mouth of one witness.
Sur la bouche de deux témoins, ou de trois témoins, celui qui doit mourir sera mis à mort. Sur la bouche d'un seul témoin, il ne sera pas mis à mort.
7 The hand of the witnesses, shall be upon him first to put him to death, and the hand of all the people, afterwards, —so shalt thou consume the wicked thing out of thy midst.
Les mains des témoins se poseront les premières sur lui pour le faire mourir, et ensuite les mains de tout le peuple. Ainsi vous éloignerez le mal du milieu de vous.
8 When any matter of judgment, shall be too difficult for thee—between blood and blood between plea and plea or between stroke and stroke, matters of contention within thy gates, then shalt thou arise and go up unto the place which Yahweh thy God shall choose;
S'il s'élève une affaire trop dure pour toi dans le jugement, entre sang et sang, entre plaidoyer et plaidoyer, et entre coup et coup, qui soit un sujet de litige dans tes portes, tu te lèveras, et tu monteras au lieu que choisira Yahvé ton Dieu.
9 and shalt come in unto the priests the Levites, and unto the judge who shall be in those days, —and shalt enquire and they shall declare unto thee, the sentence of judgment;
Tu iras vers les prêtres lévites et vers le juge qui sera en place en ces jours-là. Tu consulteras et ils te donneront le verdict.
10 and thou shalt do according to the sentence which they shall declare unto thee, out of that place, which Yahweh, shall choose, —yea thou shalt observe to do according to all which they shall direct thee:
Tu agiras selon les décisions du jugement qu'ils te donneront du lieu choisi par Yahvé. Tu observeras et tu feras tout ce qu'ils t'enseigneront.
11 according to the direction wherewith they direct thee and after the judgment which they shall announce to thee, shalt thou do, —thou shalt not turn aside from the sentence which they shall declare unto thee to the right hand or to the left.
Tu agiras selon les décisions de la loi qu'ils t'enseigneront et selon le jugement qu'ils te diront. Tu ne te détourneras pas de la sentence qu'ils t'annonceront, ni à droite, ni à gauche.
12 And, the man who shall do presumptuously by not hearkening unto the priest that standeth to minister there to Yahweh thy God, or unto the judge, that man shall die, and so shalt thou consume the wicked thing out of Israel.
L'homme qui aura la présomption de ne pas écouter le prêtre qui se tient là pour faire le service devant Yahvé ton Dieu, ou le juge, cet homme-là mourra. Tu feras disparaître le mal d'Israël.
13 And, all the people, shall hear and fear, —and shall not act presumptuously any more.
Tout le peuple écoutera et craindra, et il ne commettra plus d'acte de présomption.
14 When thou shalt enter into the land which Yahweh thy God is giving unto thee, and shalt possess it and dwell therein, —and shalt say—I will set over me a king, like all the nations that are round about me,
Lorsque tu seras arrivé dans le pays que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne, que tu le posséderas et que tu y habiteras, et que tu diras: « J'établirai un roi sur moi, comme toutes les nations qui m'entourent »,
15 thou shalt, set, over thee as king, him whom Yahweh thy God shall choose, —out of the midst of thy brethren, shalt thou set over thee a king, thou mayest not appoint over thee a man that is a foreigner, who is not thy brother.
tu établiras comme roi sur toi celui que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, aura choisi. Tu établiras comme roi sur toi un homme d'entre tes frères. Tu ne pourras pas mettre sur toi un étranger qui ne soit pas ton frère.
16 Moreover he shall not multiply to himself horses, neither shall he cause the people to return to Egypt that he may multiply horses, —when, Yahweh, hath said unto you, Ye shall not again return this way any more.
Seulement, il ne multipliera pas les chevaux pour lui-même, et il ne fera pas retourner le peuple en Égypte, afin de multiplier les chevaux, car l'Éternel vous a dit: « Vous ne retournerez plus par là. »
17 Neither shall he multiply to himself wives, that his heart turn not aside, —nor silver and gold, shall he multiply to himself greatly.
Il ne se multipliera pas de femmes, afin que son cœur ne se détourne pas. Il ne multipliera pas pour lui l'argent et l'or.
18 But it shall be when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, then shall he write for himself a copy of this law upon a scroll, out of that which is before the priests the Levites:
Lorsqu'il sera assis sur le trône de son royaume, il écrira lui-même une copie de cette loi dans un livre, d'après ce qui se trouve devant les prêtres lévitiques.
19 so shall it be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life, —that he may learn to revere Yahweh his God, to observe all the words of this law and these statutes to do them:
Il l'emportera et le lira tous les jours de sa vie, afin d'apprendre à craindre Yahvé son Dieu, à observer et à mettre en pratique toutes les paroles de cette loi et de ces statuts,
20 that his heart may not be lifted up above his brethren, and he may not turn aside from the commandment to the right hand or to the left, —that he may prolong his days over his kingdom—he and his sons, in the midst of Israel.
afin que son cœur ne s'élève pas au-dessus de ses frères et qu'il ne se détourne pas du commandement à droite ou à gauche, pour prolonger ses jours dans son royaume, lui et ses enfants, au milieu d'Israël.
