Amos 6
1 Alas for the careless in Zion, and for them who put confidence in the mountain of Samaria, —the distinguished among the first group of nations, to whom came in the house of Israel.
Malheur à ceux qui vivent tranquilles dans Sion, Et en sécurité sur la montagne de Samarie, A ces grands de la première des nations, Auprès desquels va la maison d’Israël!…
2 Pass ye over to Calneh, and see, and go on from thence to Hamath the great, —and go down to Gath of the Philistines, are they better than these kingdoms? or their boundary larger than your boundary?
Passez à Calné et voyez, Allez de là jusqu’à Hamath la grande, Et descendez à Gath chez les Philistins: Ces villes sont-elles plus prospères que vos deux royaumes, Et leur territoire est-il plus étendu que le vôtre?…
3 Ye who are putting far away the day of calamity, —but bringing near the abode of violence:
Vous croyez éloigné le jour du malheur, Et vous faites approcher le règne de la violence.
4 Who are lying on beds of ivory, and sprawling on their couch of pleasure, —and eating the well-fed of the flock, and the fatted calves out of the midst of the stalls:
Ils reposent sur des lits d’ivoire, Ils sont mollement étendus sur leurs couches; Ils mangent les agneaux du troupeau, Les veaux mis à l’engrais.
5 Who are bawling at the bidding of the harp, —like David, have they invented for themselves instruments of song:
Ils extravaguent au son du luth, Ils se croient habiles comme David sur les instruments de musique.
6 Who are quaffing bowls of wine, and, with the best of oils, anointing themselves, —and are not afflicted for the injury of Joseph: —
Ils boivent le vin dans de larges coupes, Ils s’oignent avec la meilleure huile, Et ils ne s’attristent pas sur la ruine de Joseph!
7 Therefore, at once, shall they go into exile among the first of the exiles, —so shall be disturbed the revelry of sprawlers.
C’est pourquoi ils seront emmenés à la tête des captifs; Et les cris de joie de ces voluptueux cesseront.
8 Sworn hath the Lord, Yahweh, by his own life, Declareth Yahweh, God of hosts, abhorring am I, the grandeur of Jacob, and, his palaces, I hate, —therefore will I cast off the city and the fulness thereof.
Le Seigneur, l’Éternel, l’a juré par lui-même; L’Éternel, le Dieu des armées, a dit: J’ai en horreur l’orgueil de Jacob, Et je hais ses palais; Je livrerai la ville et tout ce qu’elle renferme.
9 And it shall come to pass, though there be left remaining ten men in one house, yet shall they die;
Et s’il reste dix hommes dans une maison, ils mourront.
10 And a man’s near of kin, even he who is about to burn the bones, shall carry him out of the house, when he shall say to him that is in the hinder parts of the house—Are there yet any with thee? and he shall say—No one. Then shall he say—Hush! for we must not invoke the name of Yahweh.
Lorsqu’un parent prendra un mort pour le brûler Et qu’il enlèvera de la maison les ossements, Il dira à celui qui est au fond de la maison: Y a-t-il encore quelqu’un avec toi? Et cet homme répondra: Personne… Et l’autre dira: Silence! Ce n’est pas le moment de prononcer le nom de l’Éternel.
11 For lo! Yahweh, is giving command, and will smite the great house into ruins, —and the little house with clefts.
Car voici, l’Éternel ordonne: Il fera tomber en ruines la grande maison, Et en débris la petite maison.
12 Shall horses run upon crag? or will a man plough [there] with oxen? For ye have turned to poison the sentence of justice, and the fruit of righteousness, to wormwood:
Est-ce que les chevaux courent sur un rocher, Est-ce qu’on y laboure avec des bœufs, Pour que vous ayez changé la droiture en poison, Et le fruit de la justice en absinthe?
13 Who rejoice in a thing of nought, —who say, Have we not by our own strength, taken to ourselves horns?
Vous vous réjouissez de ce qui n’est que néant, Vous dites: N’est-ce pas par notre force Que nous avons acquis de la puissance?
14 For behold me! raising up against you, O house of Israel, Declareth Yahweh, the God of hosts—a nation! And they shall crush you, from the entering in of Hamath, unto the torrent-bed of the waste plain.
C’est pourquoi voici, je ferai lever contre vous, maison d’Israël, Dit l’Éternel, le Dieu des armées, une nation Qui vous opprimera depuis l’entrée de Hamath Jusqu’au torrent du désert.
