< Acts 8 >

1 And, Saul, was taking pleasure with them in his death. Moreover there arose, in that day, a great persecution against the assembly which was in Jerusalem; [and], all, were scattered abroad throughout the countries of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.
Saulus autem erat consentiens neci eius. Facta est autem in illa die persecutio magna in Ecclesia, quæ erat Ierosolymis, et omnes dispersi sunt per regiones Iudææ, et Samariæ præter Apostolos.
2 Howbeit reverent men assisted at the burial of Stephen, and made great lamentation over him.
Curaverunt autem Stephanum viri timorati, et fecerunt planctum magnum super eum.
3 But, Saul, went on to lay waste the assembly, along the houses, going in, and, dragging off both men and women, was
Saulus autem devastabat Ecclesiam per domos intrans, et trahens viros, ac mulieres, tradebat in custodiam.
4 They, indeed, therefore, who were scattered abroad, passed through, telling the good-news of the word;
Igitur qui dispersi erant pertransibant, evangelizantes verbum Dei.
5 And, Philip, going down unto the city of Samaria, proclaimed unto them the Christ.
Philippus autem descendens in civitatem Samariæ, prædicabant illis Christum.
6 And the multitudes began to give heed unto the things that were being spoken by Philip, with one accord, when they heard him, and saw the signs which he was working.
Intendebant autem turbæ his, quæ a Philippo dicebantur unanimiter audientes, et videntes signa quæ faciebat.
7 For, from many who had impure spirits, shouting with a loud voice, they were going out, and, many that were paralysed and lame, were cured.
Multi enim eorum, qui habebant spiritus immundos, clamantes voce magna exibant. Multi autem paralytici, et claudi curati sunt.
8 And there came to be great joy in that city.
Factum est ergo gaudium magnum in illa civitate.
9 But, a certain man named Simon, was already in the city, practising magical arts, and astonishing the nation of Samaria, —saying that himself was someone great:
Vir autem quidam nomine Simon, qui ante fuerat in civitate magnus, seducens gentem Samariæ, dicens se esse aliquem magnum:
10 Unto whom all were giving heed, from small even to great, saying—This, is the Power of God, which is called Great.
cui auscultabant omnes a minimo usque ad maximum, dicentes: Hic est virtus Dei, quæ vocatur magna.
11 And they were giving heed to him, because that, for a considerable time, with his magical arts, he had astonished them.
Attendebant autem eum: propter quod multo tempore magiis suis dementasset eos.
12 But, when they believed Philip telling the good news concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they proceeded to be immersed, both men and women.
Cum vero credidissent Philippo evangelizanti de regno Dei, in nomine Iesu Christi baptizabantur viri, ac mulieres.
13 And, Simon himself also, believed; and, having been immersed, was in constant attendance on Philip, —and, beholding signs and great works of power coming to pass, was astonished.
Tunc Simon et ipse credidit: et cum baptizatus esset, adhærebat Philippo. Videns etiam signa, et virtutes maximas fieri, stupens admirabatur.
14 And the Apostles who were in Jerusalem, hearing that Samaria had welcomed the word of God, sent out unto them Peter and John;
Cum autem audissent Apostoli, qui erant Ierosolymis, quod recepisset Samaria verbum Dei, miserunt ad eos Petrum, et Ioannem:
15 Who, indeed, going down, prayed for them, that they might receive Holy Spirit; —
Qui cum venissent, oraverunt pro ipsis ut acciperent Spiritum sanctum:
16 For, not yet, had it, upon any one of them, fallen, but, only, to begin with, they had been immersed into the name of the Lord Jesus.
Nondum enim in quemquam illorum venerat, sed baptizati tantum erant in nomine Domini Iesu.
17 Then, proceeded they to lay their hands upon them, and they were receiving Holy Spirit.
Tunc imponebant manus super illos, et accipiebant Spiritum sanctum.
18 But Simon, seeing that, through means of the laying on of the hands of the Apostles, the Spirit was being given, offered unto them money,
Cum vidisset autem Simon quia per impositionem manus Apostolorum daretur Spiritus sanctus, obtulit eis pecuniam,
19 Saying—Give unto me also this authority, —in order that, on whomsoever may lay my hands, he may receive Holy Spirit.
dicens: Date et mihi hanc potestatem, ut cuicumque imposuero manus, accipiat Spiritum sanctum. Petrus autem dixit ad eum:
20 And Peter said unto him—Thy silver, with thee, go to destruction! Because, the free-gift of God, thou didst suppose could, with money, be obtained!
Pecunia tua tecum sit in perditionem: quoniam donum Dei existimasti pecunia possideri.
21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter; for, thy heart, is not upright before God.
Non est tibi pars, neque sors in sermone isto. cor enim tuum non est rectum coram Deo.
22 Repent, therefore, from this thy baseness, and entreat of the Lord—whether, after all, the purpose of thy heart shall be forgiven thee;
Pœnitentiam itaque age ab hac nequitia tua: et roga Deum, si forte remittatur tibi hæc cogitatio cordis tui.
23 For see that thou servest as a gall-root of bitterness, and a bond of unrighteousness.
In felle enim amaritudinis, et obligatione iniquitatis video te esse.
24 And Simon, answering, said—Entreat ye, in my behalf, unto the Lord; that, nothing, may come upon me, of the things whereof ye have spoken!
Respondens autem Simon, dixit: Precamini vos pro me ad Dominum, ut nihil veniat super me horum, quæ dixistis.
25 They, therefore, having fully borne witness, and spoken the word of the Lord, began their return unto Jerusalem, and, unto many villages of the Samaritans, were they telling the glad tidings.
Et illi quidem testificati, et locuti verbum Domini, redibant Ierosolymam, et multis regionibus Samaritanorum evangelizabant.
26 And, a messenger of the Lord, spake unto Philip, saying—Arise, and be journeying along southward, unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, —the same, is desert.
Angelus autem Domini locutus est ad Philippum, dicens: Surge, et vade contra meridianum ad viam, quæ descendit ab Ierusalem in Gazam: hæc est deserta.
27 And, arising, he journeyed. And lo! a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch, one in power under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who was over all her treasure [who] had come to worship in Jerusalem;
Et surgens abiit. Et ecce vir Æthiops, eunuchus, potens Candacis Reginæ Æthiopum, qui erat super omnes gazas eius: venerat adorare in Ierusalem:
28 And was returning, and, sitting in his chariot, and was reading the prophet Isaiah.
et revertebatur sedens super currum suum, legensque Isaiam prophetam.
29 And the Spirit said unto Philip—Go near, and join thyself unto this chariot!
Dixit autem Spiritus Philippo: Accede, et adiunge te ad currum istum.
30 And, running near, Philip heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said—Dost thou, then, understand what thou art reading?
Accurrens autem Philippus, audivit eum legentem Isaiam prophetam, et dixit: Putasne intelligis quæ legis?
31 And, he, said—How indeed should be able—unless someone shall guide me? And he called upon Philip, to come up and sit with him.
Qui ait: Et quomodo possum, si non aliquis ostenderit mihi? Rogavitque Philippum ut ascenderet, et sederet secum.
32 Now, the passage of Scripture which he was reading, was, this: —As a sheep, unto slaughter, was he led, and, as a lamb, before him that sheareth it, is dumb, so, he openeth not his mouth.
Locus autem Scripturæ, quem legebat, erat hic: Tamquam ovis ad occisionem ductus est: et sicus agnus coram tondente se, sine voce, sic non aperuit os suum.
33 In his humiliation, his judgment was taken away, —his generation, who shall describe? because, his life, is taken away from the earth.
In humilitate iudicium eius sublatum est. Generationem eius quis enarrabit, quoniam tolletur de terra vita eius?
34 And the eunuch, making answer unto Philip, said—I pray thee! Of whom, is the prophet saying this? of himself, or, of some different person?
Respondens autem eunuchus Philippo, dixit: Obsecro te, de quo Propheta dicit hoc? de se, an de alio aliquo?
35 And Philip, opening his mouth, and beginning from this scripture, told him the glad tidings of Jesus.
Aperiens autem Philippus os suum, et incipiens a Scriptura ista, evangelizavit illi Iesum.
36 And, as they were journeying along the way, they came unto a certain water, —and the eunuch saith—Lo! water! What doth hinder my being immersed?
Et dum irent per viam, venerunt ad quamdam aquam: et ait Eunuchus: Ecce aqua, quid prohibet me baptizari?
Dixit autem Philippus: Si credis ex toto corde, licet. Et respondens ait: Credo, Filium Dei esse Iesum Christum.
38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still; and they went down, both, into the water, both Philip and the eunuch, —and he immersed him.
Et iussit stare currum: et descenderunt uterque in aquam, Philippus et Eunuchus, et baptizavit eum.
39 But, when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, and the eunuch saw him no more; for he was going on his way rejoicing.
Cum autem ascendissent de aqua, Spiritus Domini rapuit Philippum, et amplius non vidit eum Eunuchus. Ibat autem per viam suam gaudens.
40 Now Philip was found at Azotus; and, passing through, he was telling the glad tidings unto all the cities, until he came unto Caesarea.
Philippus autem inventus est in Azoto, et pertransiens evangelizabat civitatibus cunctis, donec veniret Cæsaream.
