Acts 7
1 And the High-priest said—Are these things, so?
Le grand prêtre lui demanda: « En est-il bien ainsi? »
2 And, he, said—Brethren and fathers, hearken! The God of Glory, appeared unto our father Abraham, while he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Haran, —
Étienne répondit: « Mes frères et mes pères, écoutez. Le Dieu de gloire apparut à notre père Abraham, lorsqu’il était en Mésopotamie, avant qu’il vint demeurer à Haran,
3 And said unto him—Get thee forth, out of thy land, and from among thy kindred, and come unto the land which, unto thee, I will point out.
et lui dit: « Quitte ton pays et ta famille, et va dans le pays que je te montrerai. »
4 Then, coming forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, he dwelt in Haran; and, from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, in which, ye, now dwell;
Alors il quitta le pays des Chaldéens et s’établit à Haran. De là, après la mort de son père, Dieu le fit émigrer dans ce pays que vous habitez maintenant.
5 And gave him no inheritance therein, not even a place to set his foot on; and yet promised to give it unto him in possession, and unto his seed after him, when as yet he had not a child.
Et il ne lui donna aucune propriété dans ce pays, pas même où poser le pied; mais il lui promit, à une époque où le patriarche n’avait pas d’enfants, de lui en donner la possession, à lui et à sa postérité après lui.
6 But God, spake thus—His seed shall be a sojourner in a foreign land, and they will bring it into bondage, and ill-treat it four-hundred years;
Dieu parla ainsi: « Sa postérité habitera en pays étranger; on la réduira en servitude, et on la maltraitera pendant quatre cents ans.
7 And, the nation unto which they shall be in bondage, will, I, judge—said God; and, after these things, shall they come forth, and render divine service unto me, in this place.
Mais la nation qui les aura tenus en esclavage, c’est moi qui la jugerai, dit le Seigneur. Après quoi ils sortiront et me serviront en ce lieu. » —
8 And he gave unto him a covenant of circumcision; and, thus, he begat Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day, and Isaac, Jacob, and Jacob, the twelve patriarchs.
Puis il donna à Abraham l’alliance de la circoncision; et ainsi Abraham après avoir engendré Isaac le circoncit le huitième jour; Isaac engendra et circoncit Jacob, et Jacob les douze patriarches.
9 And, the patriarchs, being jealous of Joseph, gave him up into Egypt; and, God, was, with him,
Poussés par la jalousie, les patriarches vendirent Joseph pour être emmené en Égypte. Mais Dieu était avec lui,
10 And rescued him out of all his tribulations, and gave him favour and wisdom before Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he appointed him governor over Egypt and all his house.
et il le délivra de toutes ses épreuves, et lui donna grâce et sagesse devant Pharaon, roi d’Égypte, qui le mit à la tête de l’Égypte et de toute sa maison.
11 And there came a famine upon all Egypt and Canaan, and great tribulation, and our fathers could not find pasture.
Or il survint une famine dans tout le pays d’Égypte et dans celui de Chanaan. La détresse était grande, et nos pères ne trouvaient pas de quoi se nourrir.
12 But Jacob, hearing there was corn in Egypt, sent off our fathers, first;
Jacob, ayant appris qu’il y avait des vivres en Égypte, y envoya nos pères une première fois.
13 And, the second time, Joseph was made known unto his brethren, and, the race of Joseph was made, manifest, unto Pharaoh.
Et la seconde fois, Joseph fut reconnu par ses frères, et Pharaon sut quelle était son origine.
14 And Joseph, sending forth, called for Jacob his father, and all the kindred, consisting of seventy-five souls;
Alors Joseph envoya chercher son père Jacob et toute sa famille, composée de soixante-quinze personnes.
15 And Jacob went down [into Egypt]. And he died, he, and our fathers;
Et Jacob descendit en Égypte, où il mourut, ainsi que nos pères.
16 And were brought over into Shechem, and laid in the tomb which Abraham had purchased, for a price of silver, of the sons of Hamor in Shechem.
Et ils furent transportés à Sichem, et déposés dans le sépulcre qu’Abraham avait acheté à prix d’argent des fils d’Hémor, à Sichem.
17 Now, just as the time of the promise was drawing near wherewith God had agreed with Abraham, the people grew, and were multiplied in Egypt, —
Comme le temps approchait où devait s’accomplir la promesse que Dieu avait jurée à Abraham, le peuple s’accrut et se multiplia en Égypte,
18 Until there arose another sort of king over Egypt, who had not known Joseph.
jusqu’à ce que parut dans ce pays un autre roi qui n’avait pas connu Joseph.
19 The same, dealing craftily with our race, ill-treated our fathers, so as to cause their babes to be exposed, to the end they might not be suffered to live.
Ce roi, usant d’artifice envers notre race, maltraita nos pères, au point de leur faire exposer leurs enfants, afin qu’ils ne vécussent pas.
20 In which season, Moses, was born, and was exceeding goodly, —who was nourished up three months in the house of his father;
À cette époque naquit Moïse, qui était beau aux yeux de Dieu; il fut nourri trois mois dans la maison de son père.
21 But, when he was exposed, the daughter of Pharaoh rescued him, and nourished him for herself, as a son.
Et quand il eut été exposé, la fille de Pharaon le recueillit et l’éleva comme son fils.
22 And, so Moses was trained in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in his words and works.
Moïse fut instruit dans toute la sagesse des Égyptiens, et il était puissant en paroles et en œuvres.
23 And, when there was being fulfilled unto him a period of forty years, it came up on his heart to look after his brethren the sons of Israel;
Quand il eut atteint l’âge de quarante ans, il lui vint dans l’esprit de visiter ses frères, les enfants d’Israël.
24 And, seeing one being wronged, he defended him, and avenged him that was getting worn out, smiting the Egyptian.
Il en vit un qu’on outrageait; prenant sa défense, il vengea l’opprimé en tuant l’Égyptien.
25 But he supposed his brethren would understand that, God, through his hand, would give them deliverance; whereas they understood not.
Or il pensait que ses frères comprendraient que Dieu leur accordait la délivrance par sa main; mais ils ne le comprirent pas.
26 On the following day also, he appeared unto them, as they were contending, and would have reconciled them in peace, saying—Men! ye are, brothers! Wherefore wrong ye one another?
Le jour suivant, en ayant rencontré deux qui se battaient, il les exhorta à la paix en disant: « Hommes, vous êtes frères: pourquoi vous maltraiter l’un l’autre? »
27 But, he that was wronging his neighbour, thrust him away, saying—Who hath appointed, thee, to be ruler and judge over us?
Mais celui qui maltraitait son prochain le repoussa, en disant: « Qui t’a établi chef et juge sur nous?
28 Art, thou, wishing, to kill me, in the same way thou didst kill, yesterday, the Egyptian?
Veux-tu me tuer, comme tu as tué hier l’Égyptien? »
29 And Moses fled at this saying, and became a sojourner in the land of Midian, where he begat two sons.
À cette parole, Moïse s’enfuit et alla habiter dans la terre de Madian, où il engendra deux fils.
30 And, when forty years were fulfilled, there appeared unto him, in the desert of Mount Sinai, a messenger, in a flame of fire, in a bush.
Quarante ans après, au désert du mont Sinaï, un ange lui apparut dans la flamme d’un buisson en feu.
31 And, Moses, seeing it, marvelled at the sight; and, as he was going near to observe, there came a voice of the Lord—
À cette vue, Moïse fut saisi d’étonnement, et comme il s’approchait pour examiner, la voix du Seigneur se fit entendre [à lui]:
32 I, am the God of thy fathers, The God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob. And Moses becoming, terrified, durst not observe.
« Je suis le Dieu de tes pères, le Dieu d’Abraham, d’Isaac et de Jacob. » — Et Moïse tout tremblant n’osait regarder.
33 And the Lord said unto him—Loose the sandals of thy feet; for, the place whereon thou art standing, is, hallowed ground.
Alors le seigneur lui dit: « Ôte la chaussure de tes pieds, car le lieu que tu foules est une terre sainte.
34 I have, indeed seen, the ill-treatment of my people that is in Egypt, and, unto their groaning, have I hearkened, and have come down to rescue them. Now, therefore, come! I will send thee into Egypt.
J’ai vu l’affliction de mon peuple qui est en Égypte, j’ai entendu ses gémissements, et je suis descendu pour le délivrer. Viens donc maintenant et je t’enverrai en Égypte. » —
35 The same Moses whom they had refused, saying—Who hath appointed thee to be ruler and judge? the same, both as ruler and redeemer, did God send, by the hand of the messenger who had appeared unto him in the bush:
Ce Moïse qu’ils avaient renié en disant: Qui t’a établi chef et juge? c’est lui que Dieu a envoyé comme chef et libérateur, avec l’assistance de l’ange qui lui était apparu dans le buisson.
36 The same, led them forth, doing wonders and signs in Egypt, and in the Red Sea, and in the desert, forty years:
C’est lui qui les a fait sortir, en opérant des prodiges et des miracles dans la terre d’Égypte, dans la mer Rouge et au désert pendant quarante ans.
37 The same, is the Moses that said unto the sons of Israel—A prophet, unto you, will God raise up, from among your brethren, like unto me:
C’est ce Moïse qui dit aux enfants d’Israël: « Dieu vous suscitera d’entre vos frères un prophète comme moi: [écoutez-le]. »
38 The same, is he that came to be in the assembly in the desert, with the messenger who was speaking with him in Mount Sinai, and with our fathers, he who welcomed living utterances, to give unto us:
C’est lui qui, au milieu de l’assemblée, au désert, conférant avec l’ange qui lui parlait sur le mont Sinaï, et avec nos pères, a reçu des oracles vivants pour nous les transmettre.
39 Unto whom, our fathers would not become obedient, but thrust him away, and turned in their hearts unto Egypt,
Nos pères, loin de vouloir lui obéir, le repoussèrent, et, retournant de cœur en Égypte,
40 Saying unto Aaron—Make as gods who shall go before us; for, as for this Moses who brought us forth out of Egypt, we know not what hath befallen him!
ils dirent à Aaron: « Fais-nous des dieux qui marchent devant nous; car ce Moïse qui nous a fait sortir du pays d’Égypte, nous ne savons ce qu’il est devenu. »
41 And so they fell to calf-making in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their hands.
Ils fabriquèrent alors un veau d’or, et ils offrirent un sacrifice à l’idole et se réjouirent de l’œuvre de leurs mains.
42 But God, turned, and delivered them up to be doing divine service unto the host of heaven, —just as it is written in a book of the prophets—Victims and sacrifices did ye offer unto me, forty years in the desert, O house of Israel?
Mais Dieu se détourna et les livra au culte de l’armée du ciel, selon qu’il est écrit au livre des prophètes: « M’avez-vous offert des victimes et des sacrifices pendant quarante ans au désert, maison d’Israël…?
43 Nay! but ye took with you the tent of Moloch, and the star of the god Rephan, —the forms which ye made to bow down unto them: therefore will I carry you away beyond Babylon.
Vous avez porté la tente de Moloch et l’astre de votre dieu Raiphan, ces images que vous avez faites pour les adorer! C’est pourquoi je vous transporterai au delà de Babylone. » —
44 The tent of witness, was with our fathers in the desert, according as he who was speaking unto Moses, gave instructions, to make it, according to the model which he had seen.
Nos pères dans le désert avaient le tabernacle du témoignage, comme l’avait ordonné celui qui dit à Moïse de le construire selon le modèle qu’il avait vu.
45 Which our fathers succeeding to, also brought in, with Joshua, when taking possession of the nations, which God put out from before our fathers until the days of David;
L’ayant reçu de Moïse, nos pères l’apportèrent, sous la conduite de Josué, lorsqu’ils firent la conquête du pays sur les nations que Dieu chassa devant eux, et il y subsista jusqu’aux jours de David.
46 Who found favour before God, and asked to find a habitation for the God of Jacob.
Ce roi trouva grâce devant Dieu, et demanda d’élever une demeure pour le Dieu de Jacob.
47 But, Solomon, built him a house.
Néanmoins ce fut Salomon qui lui bâtit un temple.
48 Although indeed, the Most High, not in hand-made places, dwelleth; just as, the prophet, saith—
Mais le Très-Haut n’habite pas dans les temples faits de main d’homme, selon la parole du prophète:
49 Heaven is my thrown, and, the earth, is my footstool: What manner of house, will ye build me, saith the Lord, —Or what shall be the place of my resting?
« Le ciel est mon trône, et la terre l’escabeau de mes pieds. Quelle demeure me bâtirez-vous, dit le Seigneur, ou quel sera le lieu de mon repos?
50 Hath not, my hand, made all these things?
N’est-ce pas ma main qui a fait toutes ces choses? » —
51 Ye stiff-necked and uncircumcised in hearts and in ears, ye, always, against the Holy Spirit, do strive! As your fathers, ye also:
Hommes à la tête dure, incirconcis de cœur et d’oreilles, vous résistez toujours au Saint-Esprit; tels furent vos pères, tels vous êtes.
52 Which of the prophets, did not your fathers persecute? Yea they slew them who declared beforehand concerning the coming of the Righteous One—of whom, now, ye, have become, betrayers and murderers!
Quel prophète vos pères n’ont-ils pas persécuté? Ils ont même tué ceux qui annonçaient d’avance la venue du Juste; et vous, aujourd’hui, vous l’avez trahi et mis à mort.
53 Who, indeed, received the law through ranks of messengers, —and guarded it not.
Vous qui avez reçu la Loi, en considération des anges qui vous l’intimaient, et vous ne l’avez pas gardée!… »
54 And, while they were hearing these things, they were being pierced in their hearts, and began gnashing their teeth against him.
En entendant ces paroles, la rage déchirait leurs cœurs, et ils grinçaient des dents contre lui.
55 But he, being already full of Holy Spirit, looking steadfastly into heaven, saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God;
Mais Étienne, qui était rempli de l’Esprit-Saint, ayant fixé les yeux au ciel, vit la gloire de Dieu, et Jésus debout à la droite de son Père.
56 And said—Lo! I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man, standing, on the right hand of God.
Et il dit: « Voici que je vois les cieux ouverts, et le Fils de l’homme debout à la droite de Dieu. »
57 And, crying out with a loud voice, they held their ears, and rushed with one accord upon him;
Les Juifs poussèrent alors de grands cris, en se bouchant les oreilles, et se jetèrent tous ensemble sur lui.
58 And, thrusting him forth outside the city, proceeded to stone him. And, the witnesses, laid their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.
Et l’ayant entraîné hors de la ville, ils le lapidèrent. Les témoins déposèrent leurs vêtements aux pieds d’un jeune homme nommé Saul.
59 And they stoned Stephen, as he was invoking and saying—Lord Jesus! give welcome unto my spirit.
Pendant qu’ils le lapidaient, Étienne priait en disant: « Seigneur Jésus, recevez mon esprit! »
60 And, kneeling down, he cried out with a loud voice—Lord! do not charge against them, this sin. And, having said this, he fell asleep.
Puis s’étant mis à genoux, il s’écria d’une voix forte: « Seigneur, ne leur imputez pas ce péché. » Après cette parole, il s’endormit [dans le Seigneur]. Or, Saul avait approuvé le meurtre d’Étienne.
