Acts 22
1 Brethren and fathers! Hear ye, the defence, which I now make unto you: —
»Werte Brüder und Väter, hört jetzt meine Rechtfertigung vor euch an!«
2 And, when they heard that, in the Hebrew language, he had begun to address them, they kept the more quiet. And he saith—
Als sie nun hörten, daß er in hebräischer Sprache zu ihnen redete, verhielten sie sich noch ruhiger; und er fuhr fort:
3 I, am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but nurtured in this city, at the feet of Gamaliel, —trained after the strictness of our ancestral law; being jealous for God just as, all ye, are this day;
»Ich bin ein Jude, geboren zu Tarsus in Cilicien, aber hier in dieser Stadt erzogen: zu den Füßen Gamaliels habe ich meine Ausbildung in strenger Befolgung des Gesetzes unserer Väter erhalten und bin ein ebensolcher Eiferer für Gott gewesen, wie ihr alle es noch heute seid.
4 and, this way, I persecuted unto the death, binding and delivering up into prisons both men and women: —
Als solcher habe ich auch diese Glaubensrichtung bis auf den Tod verfolgt, indem ich Männer wie Frauen in Ketten legte und ins Gefängnis werfen ließ,
5 as, even the High-priest, beareth me witness, and all the Eldership, —from whom, letters also, accepting to the brethren, unto Damascus, was I journeying, to bring them who were there bound unto Jerusalem, that they might be punished.
wie mir das auch der Hohepriester und der gesamte Rat der Ältesten bezeugen können. Von diesen habe ich mir sogar Briefe an unsere Volksgenossen geben lassen und mich nach Damaskus begeben, um auch die Leute dort gefesselt zur Bestrafung nach Jerusalem zu bringen.
6 But it befell me, as I was journeying and drawing nigh unto Damascus, that, about mid-day—suddenly—out of heaven, there flashed a great light all around me;
Da geschah es, als ich mich auf dem Wege dorthin befand und in die Nähe von Damaskus gekommen war, daß mich zur Mittagszeit plötzlich ein helles Licht vom Himmel her umstrahlte.
7 I fell also to the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me—Saul! Saul! Why, me, art thou persecuting?
Ich stürzte zu Boden und hörte eine Stimme, die mir zurief: ›Saul, Saul! Was verfolgst du mich?‹
8 And, I, answered—Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me—I, am Jesus the Nazarene, whom, thou, art persecuting!
Ich antwortete: ›Wer bist du, Herr?‹ Er sagte zu mir: ›Ich bin Jesus von Nazareth, den du verfolgst!‹
9 Now, they who were with me, beheld, indeed, the light, but heard not, the voice, of him that was speaking with me
Meine Begleiter nahmen zwar das Licht wahr, hörten aber die Stimme dessen nicht, der zu mir redete.
10 And said—What shall I do, Lord? And, the Lord, said unto me—Arise, and be going thy way into Damascus, and, there, shall it be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.
Ich fragte dann: ›Was soll ich tun, Herr?‹ Da antwortete mir der Herr: ›Steh auf und geh nach Damaskus! Dort wirst du Auskunft über alles erhalten, was dir zu tun verordnet ist.‹
11 But, as I could not see clearly owing to the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them who were with me, I came into Damascus.
Weil ich nun, von dem Glanz jenes Lichtes geblendet, nicht sehen konnte, wurde ich von meinen Begleitern an der Hand geführt und gelangte so nach Damaskus.
12 And, one Ananias, a man devout according to the law, well-attested by all the Jews that dwelt there,
Dort kam ein gewisser Ananias, ein gesetzesfrommer Mann, der sich der Anerkennung aller dortigen Juden erfreute,
13 coming unto me, and standing over me, said—Saul, brother! look up. And, I, in that very hour, looked up on him.
zu mir, trat vor mich hin und sagte zu mir: ›Bruder Saul, werde wieder sehend!‹, und augenblicklich erhielt ich das Augenlicht zurück und konnte ihn sehen.
14 And he said—The God of our fathers, hath chosen thee to get to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, —and to hear a voice out of his mouth.
Er aber fuhr fort: ›Der Gott unserer Väter hat dich dazu bestimmt, seinen Willen zu erkennen und den Gerechten zu sehen und einen Ruf aus seinem Munde zu vernehmen;
15 Because thou shalt be a witness to him unto all men, of the things which thou hast seen and heard.
denn du sollst Zeugnis für ihn vor allen Menschen ablegen von dem, was du gesehen und gehört hast.
16 And, now, what art thou going to do? Arise, and get thyself immersed, and have thy sins bathed away, calling upon his name.
Und nun – was zögerst du noch? Stehe auf, laß dich taufen und wasche deine Sünden ab, indem du seinen Namen anrufst!‹
17 And it came to pass, when had returned unto Jerusalem, and was praying in the temple, that I came to be in a trance,
Als ich dann nach Jerusalem zurückgekehrt war und im Tempel betete, geriet ich in eine Verzückung
18 and saw him, saying unto me—Haste thee, and go forth speedily out of Jerusalem, inasmuch as they will not accept thy witness concerning me.
und sah ihn, der mir gebot: ›Beeile dich und verlaß Jerusalem schleunigst! Denn man wird hier dein Zeugnis über mich nicht annehmen.‹
19 And, I, said—Lord! they themselves, well know that I was imprisoning and beating in every synagogue them who were believing on thee.
Da entgegnete ich: ›Herr, sie wissen doch selbst, daß ich es gewesen bin, der die an dich Gläubigen ins Gefängnis werfen und in den Synagogen auspeitschen ließ;
20 And, when the blood of Stephen thy witness was being shed, even I myself, was standing by, and approving, and guarding the mantles of them who were slaying him.
und als das Blut deines Zeugen Stephanus vergossen wurde, da habe auch ich dabeigestanden und Freude daran gehabt und Wache bei den Mänteln derer gehalten, die ihn ums Leben brachten.‹
21 And he said unto me—Be taking thy journey; because, I, unto nations afar off, will send thee.
Doch er antwortete mir: ›Mache dich auf den Weg, denn ich will dich in die Ferne zu den Heiden senden!‹«
22 And they hearkened unto him as far as this word, and lifted up their voice, saying—Away from the earth, with such a man as this, for it is not fit that he should live.
Bis zu diesem Wort hatten sie ihm ruhig zugehört; nun aber erhoben sie ein Geschrei: »Hinweg mit einem solchen Menschen von der Erde! Er darf nicht am Leben bleiben!«
23 Now, as they were both making an outcry and tearing their mantles, —dust, also were throwing into the air,
Während sie noch so schrien und dabei ihre Mäntel abwarfen und Staub in die Luft schleuderten,
24 the captain ordered him to be brought into the castle, saying, that, with scourging, he should be put to the test, —that he might find out, for what cause they were, thus, clamouring against him.
ließ der Oberst ihn in die Burg hineinbringen und gab Befehl, man solle ihn unter Geißelhieben verhören, damit man herausbrächte, aus welchem Grunde sie so wütend gegen ihn schrien.
25 But, when they had stretched him out with straps, Paul said unto the by-standing centurion—A Roman, and uncondemned, is it allowed you to be scourging?
Als man ihn nun schon für die (Geißelung mit) Riemen ausgestreckt hatte, sagte Paulus zu dem Hauptmann, der dabeistand: »Dürft ihr einen römischen Bürger geißeln, und noch dazu, ehe ein richterliches Urteil vorliegt?«
26 And, when the centurion heard [that], he went unto the captain, and reported, saying—What art thou going to do? For, this man, is, a Roman?
Als der Hauptmann das hörte, begab er sich zu dem Oberst und meldete ihm: »Was willst du tun? Dieser Mann ist ja ein römischer Bürger!«
27 And the captain, coming up, said to him—Tell me! Art, thou, a, Roman? And, he, said—Yea!
Da trat der Oberst herzu und sagte zu ihm: »Sage mir: bist du wirklich ein römischer Bürger?« Er erwiderte: »Ja.«
28 And the captain answered—I, for a large sum, this citizenship acquired! And, Paul, said—But, I, am even, [free-] born!
Da antwortete der Oberst: »Ich habe mir dieses Bürgerrecht für viel Geld erworben.« Paulus sagte: »Ich dagegen bin sogar als römischer Bürger geboren!«
29 Straightway, therefore, they who were about to put him to the test, withdrew from him; and, even the captain, was struck with fear, when he found out he was, a Roman, and because, him, he had bound.
So ließ man denn sofort von dem beabsichtigten peinlichen Verhör ab; aber auch der Oberst hatte einen Schrecken bekommen, da er erfahren hatte, daß er ein römischer Bürger sei, und weil er ihn hatte fesseln lassen.
30 But, on the morrow, being minded to get to know the certainty as to why he was being accused by the Jews, he released him, and ordered the High-priests and all the High-council to come together; and, bringing down Paul, set him before them.
Weil er aber über das Vergehen, das ihm von seiten der Juden vorgeworfen wurde, ins klare kommen wollte, ließ er ihm am folgenden Tage die Fesseln abnehmen und ordnete eine Versammlung der Hohenpriester und des ganzen Hohen Rates an; dann ließ er Paulus hinabführen und ihn vor sie stellen.
