Acts 10
1 But, a certain man in Caesarea, by name Cornelius, a centurion of the band called Italian, —
Il y avait à Césarée un homme du nom de Corneille, centurion de ce qu'on appelait le régiment d'Italie,
2 Devout, and fearing God with all his house, doing many alms unto the people, and supplicating God continually,
homme pieux et craignant Dieu de toute sa maison, qui faisait généreusement aux gens des dons pour les indigents et qui priait toujours Dieu.
3 Saw, in a vision, manifestly, as if about the ninth hour of the day, a messenger of God, coming in unto him, and saying unto him—Cornelius!
Vers la neuvième heure du jour, il vit clairement dans une vision un ange de Dieu qui venait à lui et lui disait: « Corneille! »
4 And he, looking steadfastly at him, and becoming full of fear, said—What is it, Lord? And he said unto him—Thy prayers and thine alms, have gone up for a memorial before God.
Lui, fixant les yeux sur lui et effrayé, dit: « Qu'y a-t-il, Seigneur? » Il lui dit: « Tes prières et tes dons aux indigents sont montés en souvenir devant Dieu.
5 Now, therefore, send men unto Joppa, and fetch one Simon who is surnamed Peter, —
Envoie maintenant des hommes à Joppé, et fais venir Simon, qu'on appelle aussi Pierre.
6 The same is a guest with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea.
Il est chez un corroyeur, nommé Simon, dont la maison est au bord de la mer.
7 And, when the messenger who had been speaking with him had departed, calling two of the domestics, and a devout soldier of them that constantly attended him,
Lorsque l'ange qui lui avait parlé fut parti, Corneille appela deux de ses domestiques et un soldat pieux parmi ceux qui le servaient continuellement.
8 And relating everything unto them, he sent them off unto Joppa.
Après leur avoir tout expliqué, il les envoya à Joppé.
9 Now, on the morrow, as those men were journeying, and, unto the city, drawing near, Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour;
Le lendemain, comme ils étaient en route et qu'ils approchaient de la ville, Pierre monta sur le toit de la maison pour prier, vers midi.
10 But he became hungry, and wished to eat, —and, while they were making ready, there came upon him a trance;
Il eut faim et voulut manger, mais pendant qu'on préparait le repas, il tomba en transe.
11 And he beholdeth heaven opened, and, corning down, a kind of vessel, like a large linen cloth, by its four corners, being let down upon the earth,
Il vit le ciel ouvert et un récipient qui descendait vers lui, comme une grande nappe étendue par les quatre coins sur la terre,
12 In which were all the quadrupeds and creeping things of earth and birds of heaven.
dans lequel se trouvaient toutes sortes d'animaux quadrupèdes de la terre, des bêtes sauvages, des reptiles et des oiseaux du ciel.
13 And there came a voice unto him—Rise, Peter! slay and eat.
Une voix s'adressa à lui: « Lève-toi, Pierre, tue et mange! »
14 But Peter said—By no means, Lord! because, at no time, have I eaten anything common or unclean.
Mais Pierre dit: « Non, Seigneur, car je n'ai jamais rien mangé de commun ou d'impur. »
15 And a voice [came] again, a second time, unto him—What things, God, hath cleansed, be not, thou, making common.
La deuxième fois, une voix se fit entendre: « Ce que Dieu a purifié, tu ne dois pas l'appeler impur. »
16 Now, this, took place thrice; and, straightway, was the vessel taken up into heaven.
Cela se fit trois fois, et aussitôt la chose fut reçue au ciel.
17 And, as within himself Peter was doubting what the vision which he had seen might mean, lo! the men who had been sent by Cornelius, having sought out the house of Simon, stood at the gate,
Comme Pierre était très perplexe sur la signification de la vision qu'il avait eue, voici que les hommes envoyés par Corneille, s'étant informés de la maison de Simon, se présentèrent devant la porte,
18 And, calling, enquired whether, Simon who was surnamed Peter, was there being entertained.
et appelèrent pour demander si Simon, appelé aussi Pierre, y était logé.
19 And, as Peter was pondering over the vision, the Spirit said—Lo! two men, seeking thee.
Pendant que Pierre réfléchissait à la vision, l'Esprit lui dit: « Voici, trois hommes te cherchent.
20 But rise, go down, and be journeying with them, nothing, doubting; because, I, have sent them.
Mais lève-toi, descends, et va avec eux, sans douter de rien; car je les ai envoyés. »
21 And Peter, going down unto the men, said—Lo! I, am he whom ye are seeking: What is the cause, for which ye are come?
Pierre descendit vers les hommes, et dit: « Voici, je suis celui que vous cherchez. Pourquoi êtes-vous venus? »
22 And they said—Cornelius, a centurion, a man righteous and fearing God, well-attested by the whole nation of the Jews, hath been divinely instructed by a holy messenger to send for thee unto his house, and to hear words from thee.
Ils répondirent: « Corneille, centurion, homme juste et craignant Dieu, et dont toute la nation des Juifs parle en bien, a été chargé par un saint ange de vous inviter dans sa maison et d'écouter ce que vous direz. »
23 Inviting them in, therefore, he entertained them; but, on the morrow, he rose up and went forth with them, and certain of the brethren who were from Joppa went with him;
Il les fit donc venir et leur procura un logement. Le lendemain, Pierre se leva et sortit avec eux, et quelques-uns des frères de Joppé l'accompagnèrent.
24 And, on the morrow, he entered into Caesarea. And, Cornelius, was expecting them, having called together his kinsfolk and intimate friends.
Le lendemain, ils entrèrent dans Césarée. Corneille les attendait, ayant convoqué ses parents et ses amis proches.
25 And, when it came about that Peter entered, Cornelius met him, and, falling at his feet, did homage.
Lorsque Pierre entra, Corneille vint à sa rencontre, se jeta à ses pieds et l'adora.
26 But, Peter, raised him up, saying—Arise! I also myself, am, a man.
Mais Pierre le releva, en disant: « Lève-toi! Moi aussi, je suis un homme. »
27 And, conversing with him, he went in, and findeth many come together;
Comme il parlait avec lui, il entra et trouva beaucoup de gens rassemblés.
28 And said unto the—Ye, well know, how unlawful it is, for, a Jew, to be joining himself or coming in unto one of another race. And yet, unto me, hath God pointed out that I should be calling no man, common or unclean.
Il leur dit: « Vous savez vous-mêmes qu'il est interdit à un homme de race juive de s'unir ou de s'approcher d'un homme d'une autre nation; mais Dieu m'a montré que je ne devais appeler aucun homme impie ou impur.
29 Wherefore, even without gainsaying, came I when sent for. I ask, therefore, for what reason ye sent for me.
C'est pourquoi je suis aussi venu sans me plaindre quand on m'a envoyé chercher. Je vous demande donc pourquoi vous m'avez fait venir. »
30 And Cornelius said—Four days ago, counting unto this very hour, I was keeping, the ninth hour, as one of prayer, in my house. And lo! a man stood before me, in bright clothing,
Corneille dit: « Il y a quatre jours, j'ai jeûné jusqu'à cette heure-ci; à la neuvième heure, j'ai prié dans ma maison, et voici qu'un homme se tenait devant moi, vêtu d'un vêtement éclatant
31 And saith—Cornelius! thy prayer hath been heard, and, thine alms, have been remembered before God.
et disant: 'Corneille, ta prière a été entendue, et Dieu se souvient de tes dons aux indigents'.
32 Send, therefore, unto Joppa, and fetch Simon, who is surnamed Peter. The same is being entertained in the house of one Simon a tanner, by the sea.
Envoie donc à Joppé et fais venir Simon, qu'on appelle aussi Pierre. Il loge dans la maison d'un corroyeur nommé Simon, au bord de la mer. Quand il sera arrivé, il te parlera.
33 Immediately, therefore, I sent unto thee: Thou, also hast, well, done in coming. Now, therefore, all we, before God are present, to hear all things that have been enjoined upon thee by the Lord.
Je t'ai donc envoyé sur-le-champ, et tu as bien fait de venir. Maintenant donc, nous sommes tous ici présents devant Dieu pour entendre tout ce que Dieu vous a ordonné. »
34 And Peter, opening his mouth, said—Of a truth, I find that God is no respecter of persons;
Pierre ouvrit la bouche et dit: En vérité, je sais que Dieu ne fait pas de favoritisme,
35 But, in every nation, he that feareth him and worketh righteousness, is acceptable unto him.
mais qu'il accepte dans toutes les nations celui qui le craint et qui pratique la justice.
36 As touching the word he hath sent unto the sons of Israel, announcing the glad tidings of peace through Jesus Christ—the same, is Lord, of all,
La parole qu'il a envoyée aux enfants d'Israël, annonçant la bonne nouvelle de la paix par Jésus-Christ, qui est le Seigneur de tous,
37 Ye yourselves, know what hath come to pass throughout the whole of Judaea, beginning from Galilee, after the immersion which John proclaimed, respecting Jesus who was of Nazareth: —
vous savez vous-mêmes ce qui s'est passé, et qui a été proclamé dans toute la Judée, à commencer par la Galilée, après le baptême que Jean a prêché,
38 How God anointed him with Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed by the adversary, because, God, was with him.
comment Dieu a oint du Saint-Esprit et de puissance Jésus de Nazareth, qui allait de lieu en lieu faisant du bien et guérissant tous ceux qui étaient opprimés par le diable, car Dieu était avec lui.
39 We also, are witnesses of all things which he did, both in the country of the Jews and Jerusalem; whom they even slew by suspending upon a tree; —
Nous sommes témoins de tout ce qu'il a fait, tant dans le pays des Juifs qu'à Jérusalem, où ils l'ont aussi tué, en le pendant au bois.
40 The same, God raised up on the third day, and gave him to become, manifest,
Dieu l'a ressuscité le troisième jour et l'a fait connaître,
41 Not unto all the people, but unto witnesses who had been fore-appointed by God, unto us, who, indeed, did eat and drink with him after his rising from among the dead.
non pas à tout le peuple, mais à des témoins choisis d'avance par Dieu, à nous qui avons mangé et bu avec lui après sa résurrection des morts.
42 And he charged us to proclaim unto the people, and bear full witness, that—This, is he that hath been marked out by God to be judge of living and dead.
Il nous a ordonné de prêcher au peuple et d'attester que c'est lui qui a été établi par Dieu comme juge des vivants et des morts.
43 Unto the same, do all the prophets bear witness, That, remission of sins, is to be received through his name, by every one that believeth on him.
Tous les prophètes témoignent de lui que, par son nom, quiconque croit en lui reçoit le pardon des péchés. »
44 While Peter was yet speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who were hearing the word.
Comme Pierre prononçait encore ces paroles, le Saint-Esprit tomba sur tous ceux qui écoutaient la parole.
45 And the faithful, of the circumcision, who had come with Peter, were amazed, —in that, upon the nations also, the free-gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out;
Ceux des circoncis qui avaient cru étaient dans l'étonnement, tous ceux qui étaient venus avec Pierre, parce que le don du Saint-Esprit était aussi répandu sur les païens.
46 For they heard them speaking with tongues, and magnifying God. Then answered Peter—
Car ils les entendaient parler en d'autres langues et magnifier Dieu. Pierre répondit:
47 Surely then, the water, can no man forbid, that these should not be immersed, —seeing that, the Holy Spirit, they have received, as well as we.
« Quelqu'un peut-il interdire à ces gens d'être baptisés d'eau? Ils ont reçu le Saint-Esprit, tout comme nous. »
48 And he commanded them in the name of Jesus Christ to be immersed. Then, requested they him, to abide still some days.
Il leur ordonna de se faire baptiser au nom de Jésus-Christ. Puis ils lui demandèrent de rester quelques jours.
