2 Chronicles 24
1 Seven years old, was Joash when he began to reign, and, forty years, reigned he, in Jerusalem, —and, the name of his mother, was Zibiah, of Beersheba.
Joas était âgé de sept ans lorsqu’il commença de régner; et il régna 40 ans à Jérusalem; et le nom de sa mère était Tsibia, de Beër-Shéba.
2 And Joash did that which was right, in the eyes of Yahweh, -all the days of Jehoiada the priest.
Et Joas fit ce qui est droit aux yeux de l’Éternel, tous les jours de Jehoïada, le sacrificateur.
3 And Jehoiada took for him two wives, —and he begat sons and daughters.
Et Jehoïada prit deux femmes pour [Joas], et il engendra des fils et des filles.
4 And it came to pass, after this, that it was near the heart of Joash to renew the house of Yahweh.
Et il arriva, après cela, que Joas eut à cœur de restaurer la maison de l’Éternel.
5 So he gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said unto them—Go ye out unto the cities of Judah, and gather out of all Israel silver to repair the house of your God, year by year, and, ye, shall hasten the matter, —but the Levites hastened it not.
Et il assembla les sacrificateurs et les lévites, et leur dit: Allez par les villes de Juda, et recueillez de l’argent de tout Israël, pour réparer la maison de votre Dieu, d’année en année, et hâtez cette affaire. Mais les lévites ne la hâtèrent point.
6 Then the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said unto him, Wherefore hast thou not required of the Levites, to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the tribute of Moses the servant of Yahweh, and of the convocation of Israel, —for the tent of testimony?
Et le roi appela Jehoïada, le chef, et lui dit: Pourquoi n’as-tu pas exigé des lévites qu’ils apportent, de Juda et de Jérusalem, le tribut de Moïse, serviteur de l’Éternel, [imposé à] la congrégation d’Israël pour la tente du témoignage?
7 For, as for Athaliah the Lawless, her sons, brake up the House of God, —moreover, all the hallowed things of the house of Yahweh, offered they unto the Baalim.
Car Athalie, cette méchante femme, [et] ses fils, avaient dévasté la maison de Dieu, et, toutes les choses saintes de la maison de l’Éternel, ils les avaient aussi employées pour les Baals.
8 So the king bade [them], and they made a certain chest, —and set it in the gate of the house of Yahweh, outside.
Et le roi commanda, et on fit un coffre, et on le mit à la porte de la maison de l’Éternel, en dehors.
9 And they made a proclamation, throughout Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in unto Yahweh the tribute of Moses the servant of God, laid upon Israel in the desert.
Et on publia dans Juda et dans Jérusalem qu’on apporte à l’Éternel le tribut de Moïse, serviteur de Dieu, [imposé] à Israël, dans le désert.
10 And all the rulers and all the people rejoiced, —and brought in and cast into the chest, until they had finished.
Et tous les princes et tout le peuple s’en réjouirent; et ils apportèrent [l’argent] et le jetèrent dans le coffre, jusqu’à ce qu’on ait fini.
11 And it came to pass, what time the chest was brought into the office of the king by the hand of the Levites, and when they had seen that abundant was the silver, that the scribe of the king came in, and the officer of the chief priest, and they emptied the chest, and bare it, and put it back in its place, —thus, they did, day by day, and collected silver, in abundance;
Et il arrivait que, lorsque c’était le temps d’apporter le coffre au contrôle du roi, par la main des lévites, et qu’on voyait qu’il y avait beaucoup d’argent, le secrétaire du roi et l’officier du principal sacrificateur venaient et vidaient le coffre; et ils le reportaient et le remettaient à sa place. Ils faisaient ainsi jour par jour, et on recueillit de l’argent en abondance.
12 and the king and Jehoiada gave it unto such as were doing the work of labouring upon the house of Yahweh, and they were hiring masons and carpenters, to renew the house of Yahweh, —moreover also, such as were fashioners of iron and bronze, to repair the house of Yahweh.
Et le roi et Jehoïada le donnaient à ceux qui faisaient l’ouvrage du service de la maison de l’Éternel, et ceux-ci prenaient à gage des tailleurs de pierres et des charpentiers pour restaurer la maison de l’Éternel, et aussi des ouvriers en fer et en airain pour réparer la maison de l’Éternel.
13 So the doers of the work wrought, and the work of restoration went forward, in their hand, —and they caused the house of God to stand forth according to its due proportions, and made it strong.
Et ceux qui faisaient l’ouvrage travaillèrent, et l’œuvre de restauration se fit par leur moyen, et ils rétablirent la maison de Dieu en son état, et la consolidèrent.
14 And, when they had finished, they brought in before the king and Jehoiada the rest of the silver, and he made it into utensils for the house of Yahweh, utensils of attendance, and bowls and spoons, even utensils of gold and silver. Then were they offering ascending-sacrifices in the house of Yahweh, continually, all the days of Jehoiada.
Et quand ils eurent achevé, ils apportèrent devant le roi et devant Jehoïada le reste de l’argent; et on en fit des ustensiles pour la maison de l’Éternel, des ustensiles pour le service et pour les holocaustes, et des coupes, et des ustensiles d’or et d’argent. Et on offrit des holocaustes dans la maison de l’Éternel continuellement, tous les jours de Jehoïada.
15 But Jehoiada waxed old and became satisfied with days, and died, —a hundred and thirty years old, when he died.
Et Jehoïada devint vieux et rassasié de jours, et il mourut. Il était âgé de 130 ans quand il mourut.
16 And they buried him in the city of David, with the kings, —because he had done good in Israel, both toward God and his house.
Et on l’enterra dans la ville de David avec les rois, car il avait fait du bien en Israël, et pour Dieu et pour sa maison.
17 Now, after the death of Jehoiada, came the rulers of Judah, and bowed themselves down unto the king, —then, hearkened the king unto them.
Et après la mort de Jehoïada, les chefs de Juda vinrent et s’inclinèrent devant le roi; alors le roi les écouta.
18 And they forsook the house of Yahweh, God of their fathers, and served the Sacred Stems, and the images, —so there was wrath against Judah and Jerusalem, for this their guilt.
Et ils abandonnèrent la maison de l’Éternel, le Dieu de leurs pères, et servirent les ashères et les idoles; et il y eut de la colère contre Juda et contre Jérusalem, parce qu’ils s’étaient rendus coupables en cela.
19 And he sent among them prophets, to bring them back unto Yahweh, —and they testified against them, but they would not give ear.
Et l’Éternel envoya parmi eux, pour les ramener à lui, des prophètes qui témoignèrent contre eux; mais ils n’écoutèrent point.
20 And, the spirit of God, clothed Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest, and he took his stand above the people, —and said unto them, Thus, saith God, Wherefore are, ye, transgressing the commandments of Yahweh, so that ye cannot prosper, because ye have forsaken Yahweh, therefore hath he forsaken you.
Et l’Esprit de Dieu revêtit Zacharie, fils de Jehoïada, le sacrificateur, et il se tint debout au-dessus du peuple, et leur dit: Ainsi dit Dieu: Pourquoi transgressez-vous les commandements de l’Éternel? Vous ne réussirez point; car vous avez abandonné l’Éternel, et il vous abandonnera aussi.
21 So they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones, by the commandment of the king, —in the court of the house of Yahweh.
Et ils conspirèrent contre lui, et le lapidèrent avec des pierres par l’ordre du roi, dans le parvis de la maison de l’Éternel.
22 Thus Joash the king, remembered not, the lovingkindness which Jehoiada his father had done for him, but slew his son, —and, as he died, he said, Yahweh see and require!
Et le roi Joas ne se souvint pas de la bonté dont Jehoïada, père de Zacharie, avait usé envers lui, et il tua son fils. Et comme il mourait, il dit: Que l’Éternel regarde et redemande!
23 And it came to pass, when the year had gone round, that the force of Syria came up against him, and they entered Judah, and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the rulers of the people, from among the people, —and, all the spoil of them, sent they unto the king of Damascus.
Et il arriva, quand l’année fut révolue, que l’armée de Syrie monta contre Joas, et entra en Juda et à Jérusalem; et ils détruisirent d’entre le peuple tous les chefs du peuple, et envoyèrent toutes leurs dépouilles au roi, à Damas.
24 Although, with a comparatively few men, came the force of Syria, yet, Yahweh, delivered into their hand an exceeding large force, —because they had forsaken Yahweh, the God of their fathers, —and, upon Joash, executed they judgments.
Car l’armée de Syrie vint avec un petit nombre d’hommes, et l’Éternel livra en leurs mains une très grande armée, parce qu’ils avaient abandonné l’Éternel, le Dieu de leurs pères. Ainsi [les Syriens] firent justice de Joas.
25 And, when they had departed from him, for they left him with sore diseases, his own servants conspired against him, for the blood of the son of Jehoiada the priest, and slew him upon his bed, and he died, —and, though they buried him in the city of David, yet did they not bury him in the sepulchres of the kings.
Et quand ils l’eurent quitté, (or ils l’avaient laissé dans de grandes maladies, ) ses serviteurs conspirèrent contre lui, à cause du sang des fils de Jehoïada, le sacrificateur; et ils le tuèrent sur son lit, et il mourut; et on l’enterra dans la ville de David, mais on ne l’enterra pas dans les sépulcres des rois.
26 Now, these, are they that conspired against him, —Zabad son of Shimeath the Ammonitess, and Jehozabad son of Shimrith the Moabitess.
Et ce sont ici ceux qui conspirèrent contre lui: Zabad, fils de Shimhath, l’Ammonite, et Jozabad, fils de Shimrith, la Moabite.
27 But, as for his sons, and the greatness of the oracle on him, and the foundation of the house of God, lo! there they are written, in the commentary of the Book of Kings, —and Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.
Et quant à ses fils, et à la grandeur du tribut qui lui fut imposé, et aux constructions de la maison de Dieu, voici, ces choses sont écrites dans les commentaires du livre des rois. Et Amatsia, son fils, régna à sa place.
