1 Samuel 6
1 And it came to pass, that the ark of Yahweh was in the country of the Philistines, seven months.
L’Arche du Seigneur était depuis sept mois dans le territoire des Philistins,
2 Then called the Philistines for the priests and for the diviners, saying, What shall we do with the ark of Yahweh? Let us know, wherewith we shall send it to its own place.
lorsqu’ils mandèrent prêtres et devins et leur dirent: "Comment procéderons-nous pour l’arche de l’Eternel? Apprenez-nous la façon de la renvoyer au lieu de sa résidence."
3 And they said—If ye are going to send away the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it away, empty, but ye must, surely return, to him, a guilt-offering, —then, shall ye be healed, and it shall be known to you, wherefore his hand would not turn away from you.
Ceux-là répondirent: "Si vous renvoyez l’arche du Dieu d’Israël, ne la renvoyez point à vide, il faut aussi lui offrir un expiatoire; alors vous serez guéris, et vous saurez pourquoi sa main ne cesse de vous frapper.
4 And they said—What shall be the guilt-offering, that we shall return to him? And they said—By the number of the lords of the Philistines, five tumours of gold, and five mice of gold, —for, one plague, was on you all, and on your lords.
Quel expiatoire, dirent-ils, devons-nous lui offrir? Autant, répondit-on, que les Philistins ont de princes: cinq images d’hémorroïdes en or et cinq mulots en or; car vous souffrez d’une même plaie, vous tous et vos princes.
5 Wherefore ye shall make likenesses of your turnouts, and likenesses of your mice that are laying waste the land, and shall, give unto the, God of Israel, glory, —Peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your god, and from off your land.
Faites donc des simulacres de vos hémorroïdes et des mulots qui ravagent le pays, et offrez-les en hommage au Dieu d’Israël; peut-être cessera-t-il de faire peser sa main sur vous, sur votre dieu et votre pays.
6 Wherefore, then, should ye make your heart dull, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh made their heart dull! When he had done his great doings upon them, did they not let them go, and they departed?
Et pourquoi endurcir votre cœur comme l’ont fait les Egyptiens et Pharaon? Assurément, quand il les eut accablés de sa puissance, ils ont dû renvoyer ce peuple et il est parti!
7 Now, therefore, take and get ready, one new waggon, and two milch kine, whereon hath never come yoke, —then shall ye fasten the kine in the waggon, and withdraw their calves from them, into the shed;
Donc, faites fabriquer un chariot neuf, et prenez deux vaches laitières qui n’aient pas encore porté le joug; attelez ces vaches au chariot, et faites ramener leurs petits, séparés d’elles, à l’étable.
8 and ye shall take the ark of Yahweh, and place it in the waggon, also, the jewels of gold which ye send back to him as a guilt-offering, shall ye put into a coffer, at the side thereof, —so shall ye let it go, and it shall depart.
Prenez alors l’arche de l’Eternel, placez-la sur le chariot, et, à côté d’elle, posez dans un coffret les simulacres d’or que vous lui aurez destinés comme offrande d’expiation; puis vous la laisserez partir,
9 Then shall ye look—if, by the way of its own boundary, it goeth up to Beth-shemesh, he, it was who caused us this great affliction, —but, if not, then shall we know that it was not, his hand, that smote us, a chance, it was, that befell us.
et vous la suivrez des yeux: si elle s’achemine vers son territoire, à Beth-Chémech, c’est elle qui nous a infligé cette grande calamité; sinon, nous en conclurons que ce n’est pas sa main, mais le hasard seul, qui nous a frappés."
10 The men, therefore, did so, and took two milch kine, and fastened them in the waggon, —but, their calves, shut they up in the shed.
Ainsi fit-on. L’On prit deux vaches laitières, qu’on attela à un chariot, en retenant les veaux à l’étable;
11 And they put the ark of Yahweh, into the waggon, —also the coffer, with the mice of gold, and the likenesses of their tumours.
et l’on mit l’arche du Seigneur sur le chariot, ainsi que le coffret contenant les mulots d’or et les simulacres d’hémorroïdes.
12 And the kine went straight along the road, on the way to Beth-shemesh, yea, along the main highway, they went, lowing as they went, turning not aside, to the right hand or to the left. And, the lords of the Philistines, went along after them, as far as the bounds of Beth-shemesh.
Les vaches marchèrent droit dans la direction de Beth-Chémech, suivirent toujours une même voie tout en mugissant, et ne s’en écartèrent ni à droite ni à gauche; les princes des Philistins marchèrent derrière elles, jusqu’aux confins de Beth-Chémech.
13 Now, they of Beth-shemesh, were reaping their wheat-harvest in the vale, —so they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to meet it.
Les gens de Beth-Chémech faisaient alors la coupe du froment dans la vallée; en levant les yeux, ils aperçurent l’arche et se réjouirent à cette vue.
14 And, the waggon, entered into the field of Joshua, a man of Beth-shemesh, and stood still, there, where also, was a great stone, —so they clave into pieces the planks of the waggon, and, the kine, offered they up as an ascending-sacrifice, unto Yahweh.
Le chariot, arrivé au champ de Josué, de Beth-Chémech, s’y arrêta; là se trouvait une grande pierre. On fendit en morceaux le bois du chariot, et l’on immola les vaches en holocauste à l’Eternel.
15 And, the Levites, took down the ark of Yahweh, and the coffer that was with it, wherein were the jewels of gold, and put them upon the great stone, —and, the men of Beth-shemesh, caused to go up ascending-offerings and offered sacrifices, that day, unto Yahweh.
Les lévites avaient descendu l’arche du Seigneur et le coffret qui l’accompagnait contenant les objets d’or, et avaient posé le tout sur la grosse pierre; alors les gens de Beth-Chémech offrirent, le même jour, des holocaustes et autres sacrifices à l’Eternel.
16 And, the five lords of the Philistines, saw it, —and returned unto Ekron, the same day.
Ce que voyant, les cinq princes des Philistins s’en retournèrent à Ekron ce jour-là.
17 Now, these, are the golden boils which, the Philistines returned as a guilt-offering unto Yahweh, —For Ashdod, one, for Gaza, one, for Ashkelon, one, for Gath, one, for Ekron, one;
Quant aux hémorroïdes imitées en or, que les Philistins avaient offertes en expiation à l’Eternel, en voici le compte: une pour Asdod, une pour Gaza, une pour Ascalon, une pour Gath, une pour Ekron.
18 And the golden mice, by the number of all the cities of the Philistines, pertaining to the five lords, both fortified cities, and country villages, —yea, even the great meadow whereon they rested the ark of Yahweh, until this day, is in the field-land of Joshua, the man of Beth-shemesh.
Mais le nombre des mulots d’or égalait celui de toutes les villes des Philistins soumises aux cinq princes, depuis la ville forte jusqu’à la place ouverte, et jusqu’à la grosse pierre sur laquelle on posa l’arche du Seigneur et qui subsiste aujourd’hui encore, dans le champ de Josué de Beth-Chémech.
19 And, when he smote the men of Beth-shemesh, because they looked into the ark of Yahweh, yea smote of the people seventy men [and] fifty thousand men, the people mourned, for that Yahweh had smitten the people with a great smiting.
Le Seigneur frappa les habitants de Beth-Chémech, pour avoir regardé dans l’arche; il frappa, dans cette population, soixante-dix hommes sur cinquante mille. Le peuple fut consterné de cette grande mortalité que lui avait infligée le Seigneur;
20 Then said the men of Beth-shemesh, Who is able to stand before Yahweh, this holy God? and, unto whom, shall he go up from us?
et les gens de Beth-Chémech se dirent: "Qui peut subsister devant l’Eternel, ce Dieu saint? Et où l’arche montera-t-elle de chez nous?"
21 And they sent messengers unto the inhabitants of Kiriath-jearim, saying, —The Philistines have returned the ark of Yahweh, come down, fetch it up unto you.
Ils envoyèrent alors des messagers aux habitants de Kiryath-Yearim, pour leur dire: "Les Philistins ont restitué l’arche du Seigneur; venez, faites-la monter chez vous."
