1 Samuel 31
1 Now, as, the Philistines, were fighting against Israel, the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell slain, in Mount Gilboa.
Et les Philistins livrèrent bataille à Israël, et les hommes d'Israël prirent la fuite devant eux; ils furent taillés en pièces dans la montagne de Gelboé.
2 And the Philistines followed hard after Saul, and after his sons, —and the Philistines smote Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchishua, sons of Saul.
Les Philistins entourèrent Saül et ses trois fils; ils tuèrent Jonathan, Aminadab et Melchisa, fils de Saül.
3 And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers discovered him, —and he was terrified at the archers.
Et le poids de la guerre tomba sur Saül; des archers l'atteignirent, et il fut blessé au flanc.
4 Then said Saul to his armour-bearer—Draw thy sword and pierce me through therewith, lest these uncircumcised come, and pierce me through, and abuse me. But his armour-bearer was not willing, for he was sore afraid. So Saul took his sword and fell thereon.
Alors, Saül dit au serviteur qui portait ses armes: Tire ton épée, et perce-moi, de peur que ces incirconcis ne m'approchent, ne me percent et ne m'outragent. Le serviteur, qui portait ses armes, ne le voulut pas, car il avait grande crainte; mais Saül prit l'épée et se jeta sur la pointe.
5 And, when his armour-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also, fell upon his sword, and died with him.
Le serviteur, qui portait ses armes, vit que Saül était mort; lui-même se jeta sur son épée, et il mourut avec son maître.
6 Thus died Saul, and his three sons, and his armour-bearer, yea all his men, on that day, together.
Ainsi Saül, ses trois fils et le serviteur qui portait ses armes, périrent ensemble ce jour-là.
7 And, when the men of Israel who were across the vale, and who were across the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel had fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities, and fled, and the Philistines entered, and took up their abode therein.
Les hommes d'Israël qui étaient de l'autre côté de cette vallée, ceux des rives du Jourdain virent que l'armée était en fuite, et que Saül et ses fils étaient morts; alors ils abandonnèrent leurs villes et se cachèrent; et les Philistins survinrent, et ils prirent possession de leurs demeures.
8 And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul, and his three sons, lying prostrate in Mount Gilboa.
Et, le lendemain, les vainqueurs dépouillèrent les morts; ils trouvèrent Saül et ses trois fils gisant dans les montagnes de Gelboé.
9 So they cut off his head, and stripped off his armour, —and sent throughout the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it in the house of their idols, and unto the people.
Ils défigurèrent le roi; ils lui ôtèrent ses armes, et ils les envoyèrent aux villes d'alentour en la terre des Philistins, annonçant ces nouvelles à leurs idoles et au peuple.
10 And they put his armour in a house of Ashtoreths, —and, his dead body, fastened they on the wall of Beth-shan.
Ils déposèrent les armes dans le temple d'Astarté, et ils clouèrent le corps au mur de Bethsam.
11 And, when the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard concerning him, what the Philistines had done unto Saul,
Or, ceux de Jabès-Galaad apprirent comment les Philistins avaient traité Saül.
12 then arose all the men of valour, and journeyed all the night, and took the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, from the wall of Beth-shan, —and came to Jabesh, and burned them there;
Et tous les hommes vaillants se levèrent; ils marchèrent toute la nuit, enlevèrent des murs de Bethsam les corps de Saül et de Jonathan, et les transportèrent à Jabès, où ils les brûlèrent.
13 and took their bones, and buried them under the tamarisk-tree in Jabesh, —and fasted seven days.
Enfin, ils recueillirent leurs ossements; ils les inhumèrent en un champ de Jabès, et ils jeûnèrent sept jours.
