1 Samuel 24
1 And it came to pass, when Saul had returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying: Lo! David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.
Et lorsque Saül fut revenu, après avoir poursuivi les Philistins, on lui porta une nouvelle, en disant: Voilà que David est dans le désert d’Engaddi.
2 Then Saul took three thousand chosen men, out of all Israel, —and went to seek David and his men, over the face of the rocks of the mountain-goats.
Saül donc, prenant trois mille hommes choisis de tout Israël, alla pour chercher David et ses hommes, même sur les rochers les plus escarpés, qui sont accessibles seulement aux chamois.
3 And he came into the sheep-folds by the way, there, being a cave, which Saul entered, to cover his feet, —David and his men, in the hinder part of the cave, having taken up their abode.
Et il vint aux parcs de brebis, qui s’offraient à lui pendant qu’il était en chemin; et il y avait là une caverne, dans laquelle entra Saul pour un besoin naturel: or, David et ses hommes étaient cachés dans la partie intérieure de la caverne.
4 So David’s men said unto him—Lo! the day of which Yahweh said unto thee—Lo! I am about to deliver up thine enemy, into thy hand: therefore shall thou do unto him, as shall be good in thine eyes. And David arose, and cut off the corner of the robe which belonged to Saul, by stealth.
Et les serviteurs de David lui dirent: Voici le jour dont le Seigneur vous a dit: C’est moi qui te livrerai ton ennemi, afin que tu lui fasses comme il plaira à tes yeux. David se leva donc, et coupa sans bruit le bord du manteau de Saül.
5 And it came to pass afterwards that David’s heart smote him, —because he had cut off the corner [of the robe] which belonged to Saul.
Après cela David frappa sa poitrine de ce qu’il avait coupé le bord du manteau de Saül.
6 And he said unto his men—Far be it from me, of Yahweh, that I should do this thing unto my lord, unto the Anointed of Yahweh, to thrust forth my hand against him, —for, the Anointed of Yahweh, is he!
Et il dit à ses hommes: Que le Seigneur me soit propice, afin que je ne commette point ce crime contre mon seigneur, le christ du Seigneur, que de porter ma main sur lui, parce qu’il est le christ du Seigneur.
7 So David did chide his men with the words, and did not suffer them to rise up against Saul. And, Saul, rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.
Et David réprima ses hommes par ses paroles, et il ne permit pas qu’ils s’élevassent contre Saül: or, Saül se levant de la caverne, continuait son chemin commencé.
8 Then David rose up, afterwards, and went forth out of the cave, and cried out after Saul, saying—My lord, O king! And, when Saul looked about behind him, David inclined his face to the earth, and bowed himself down.
Or David se leva aussi après lui; et, sorti de la caverne, il cria derrière Saül, disant: Mon seigneur roi! Et Saül regarda derrière lui, et David, s’inclinant penché vers la terre, se prosterna,
9 Then said David to Saul, Wherefore shouldst thou hearken unto the words of the sons of earth, saying, —Lo! David is seeking thy hurt?
Et dit à Saül: Pourquoi écoutez-vous les paroles d’hommes qui disent: David cherche votre perte?
10 Lo! this day, have thine own eyes seen, how Yahweh had delivered thee up, to-day, into my hand in the cave, and, when one bade me slay thee, I looked with compassion upon thee, —and I said—I will not thrust forth my hand against my lord, for, the Anointed of Yahweh, is he!
Voilà qu’aujourd’hui vos yeux ont vu que le Seigneur vous a livré à ma main dans la caverne; et j’ai pensé à vous tuer, mais mon œil vous a épargné; car j’ai dit: Je n’étendrai pas ma main sur mon seigneur, parce que c’est le christ du Seigneur.
11 But, my father, see, yea, see, the corner of thy robe in my hand, —for, in that I cut off the corner of thy robe, and yet did not slay thee, know thou, and see, that there is not in my hand either wrong or transgression, neither have I sinned against thee, yet art thou hunting my life, to take it.
Bien plus, mon père, voyez, et reconnaissez le bord de votre manteau dans ma main, et que quand j’ai coupé l’extrémité de votre manteau, je n’ai pas étendu ma main sur vous; remarquez et voyez qu’il n’y a pas de mal en ma main, ni d’iniquité, et que je n’ai pas péché contre vous; mais vous, vous tendez des embûches à mon âme, pour la détruire.
12 Let Yahweh do justice betwixt me and thee, and let Yahweh avenge me of thee, —but, mine own hand, shall not be upon thee.
Que le Seigneur juge entre moi et vous, et que le Seigneur me venge de vous; mais que ma main ne soit pas sur vous.
13 As saith the proverb of the ancients, From the lawless, proceedeth lawlessness, —mine own hand, therefore shall not be upon thee.
Comme il est dit aussi dans l’ancien proverbe: C’est des impies que sortira l’impiété: que ma main donc ne soit pas sur vous.
14 After whom, hath the king of Israel come forth? After whom, art thou in pursuit? After a dead dog! after a single flea!
Qui poursuivez-vous, roi d’Israël? qui poursuivez-vous? c’est un chien mort que vous poursuivez, et une puce.
15 Therefore shall, Yahweh, become, judge, and do justice betwixt me and thee, —that he may see, and plead my cause, and justly deliver me out of thy hand.
Que le Seigneur soit juge, et qu’il juge entre moi et vous; qu’il voie et juge ma cause et qu’il me délivre de votre main.
16 And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Thy voice, is this, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept.
Or, lorsque David eut achevé de tenir ces discours à Saül, Saül dit: N’est-ce point là ta voix, mon fils David? Et Saül éleva sa voix, et pleura;
17 And he said unto David, More righteous, art thou than I, for, thou, hast requited me, good, but, I, have requited thee, evil.
Puis il dit à David: Tu es plus juste que moi, toi; car toi, tu m’as fait du bien, et moi, je t’ai rendu du mal.
18 Thou, then, hast told to-day, how thou hast dealt with me, for good, —how, when Yahweh had surrendered me into thy hand, thou didst not slay me.
C’est même toi qui m’as montré aujourd’hui le bien que tu m’as fait: comment le Seigneur m’a livré à ta main, et comment tu ne m’as point tué.
19 Yet, when a man findeth his enemy, will he let him get easily away? Yahweh, then, give thee, good, reward for what, this day, thou hast done unto me.
Qui, en effet, lorsqu’il a trouvé son ennemi, le laisse aller dans une bonne voie? Mais que le Seigneur te paie de retour, pour ce que tu as fait aujourd’hui à mon égard.
20 Now, therefore, lo! I know that thou, shalt indeed become king, —and that the kingdom of Israel, shall be established in thy hand.
Et maintenant comme je sais que très certainement tu dois régner, et que tu dois avoir en ta main le royaume d’Israël,
21 Now, therefore, swear unto me by Yahweh, that thou wilt not eat off my seed, after me, —and wilt not destroy my name out of the house my father.
Jure-moi par le Seigneur que tu ne détruiras point ma race après moi, et que tu n’ôteras pas mon nom de la maison de mon père.
22 So David sware unto Saul, —and Saul departed unto his own house, but, David and his men, went up on the stronghold.
Et David le jura à Saül. Saul donc s’en alla en sa maison; et David et ses hommes montèrent dans des lieux plus sûrs.
