< 1 Samuel 17 >
1 And the Philistines gathered together their hosts, unto battle, and they were gathered together unto Socoh, which belongeth unto Judah, —and they encamped between Socoh and Azekah in Ephes-dammim;
2 and, Saul and the men of Israel, gathered themselves together, and encamped in the vale of Elah, and set the army in array against the Philistines.
Saũlũ na andũ a Isiraeli makĩũngana, makĩamba hema ciao kĩanda-inĩ kĩa Ela, makĩĩhaarĩria ũrĩa mekũrũa na Afilisti.
3 And, the Philistines, were standing near the hill on one side, and, the Israelites, were standing near the hill on the other side, —while, the valley, was between them.
Afilisti magĩikara kĩrĩma-inĩ kĩmwe, nao andũ a Isiraeli magĩikara kĩrĩa kĩngĩ, hagakĩgĩa kĩanda gatagatĩ kao.
4 And there came forth a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, Goliath, his name, from Gath, —his height, six cubits and a span;
5 with a helmet of bronze on his head, and, with a scaly coat of mail, was he clad, —the weight of the coat, being five thousand shekels of bronze;
Eekĩrĩte ngũbia ya gĩcango mũtwe, na akehumba nguo ya mbaara ya gĩcango ĩrĩ na ũritũ wa cekeri ngiri ithano;
6 and, greaves of bronze, on his feet, —and, a javelin of bronze, between his shoulders;
eyohete indo cia kũgitĩra mũthiimo cia gĩcango, na agacuuria kĩberethi gĩa gĩcango gatagatĩ ga ciande ciake.
7 and, the shaft of his spear, was like a weaver’s beam, and, the flashing head of his spear, was six hundred shekels of iron, —and, his shield-bearer, was coming on before him.
8 And he took his stand, and cried unto the ranks of Israel, and said unto them, Wherefore should ye come out, to set in array for battle? Am not, I, a Philistine, while, ye, are servants unto Saul? Choose you a man, and let him come down unto me:
Goliathũ akĩrũgama, akĩanĩrĩra kũrĩ itungati cia Isiraeli, akiuga atĩrĩ, “Nĩ kĩĩ gĩtũmĩte mũũke mwĩyaare mĩhari ya mbaara? Githĩ niĩ ndikĩrĩ Mũfilisti, na inyuĩ githĩ mũtikĩrĩ ndungata cia Saũlũ? Thuurai mũndũ ũmwe mũreke aikũrũke oke kũrĩ niĩ.
9 If he prevail in fighting with me, and smite me, then will we become your servants, —but, if, I, prevail over him, and smite him, then shall ye become our servants, and serve, us.
Angĩhota kũrũa na niĩ na anjũrage-rĩ, ithuĩ tũgũtuĩka ndungata cianyu; no ndamũtooria na ndĩmũũrage-rĩ, inyuĩ mũgũtuĩka ndungata ciitũ na mũtũtungatagĩre.”
10 And the Philistine said—I, reproach the ranks of Israel, this day, —give me a man, that we may fight together.
Ningĩ Mũfilisti ũcio akiuga atĩrĩ, “Ũmũthĩ nĩndoogita itungati cia Isiraeli! Heei mũndũ tũrũe nake.”
11 When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and feared exceedingly.
Rĩrĩa maiguire ciugo cia Mũfilisti ũcio, Saũlũ na andũ othe a Isiraeli makĩmaka, magĩĩtigĩra mũno.
12 Now, David, was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem-judah, whose, name, was Jesse, and, who, had eight sons, —and, the man, in the days of Saul was old, advanced in years.
13 And the three eldest sons of Jesse had followed Saul to the battle, —and, the names of his three sons who went into the battle, were Eliab the firstborn, and, the next to him, Abinadab, and, the third, Shammah.
14 But, as for David, he, was the youngest, —and, the three eldest, followed Saul;
Daudi nĩwe warĩ mũnini wao. Acio atatũ akũrũ nĩmarũmĩrĩire Saũlũ,
15 whereas, David, kept going and returning from Saul, —to tend his father’s sheep at Bethlehem.
no Daudi agathiiaga gwĩ Saũlũ, na agacooka nĩguo akarĩithie ngʼondu cia ithe kũu Bethilehemu.
16 And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, —and presented himself forty days.
Ihinda rĩa matukũ mĩrongo ĩna Mũfilisti ũcio nĩoimagĩra o rũciinĩ na hwaĩ-inĩ, akarũgama akeyonithania harĩo.
17 And Jesse said unto David his son, Take, I pray thee, unto thy brethren—this ephah of parched corn, and these ten loaves, —and run to the camp unto thy brethren;
Na rĩrĩ, Jesii akĩĩra mũriũ Daudi atĩrĩ, “Oya eba ĩno ya ngano hĩhie, na mĩgate ĩno ikũmi nĩ ũndũ wa ariũ a nyũkwa, ũhiũhe ũcitware kũu kambĩ-inĩ.
18 also these ten slices of soft cheese, shalt thou take to the captain of their thousand, —and, as for thy brethren, give good heed to their welfare, their pledge, also shalt thou receive.
Nacio cienyũ ici ikũmi cia ngorono ũcitware kũrĩ mũnene wa gĩkundi kĩao. Ũkĩrore ũrĩa ariũ a nyũkwa matariĩ ũnjookerie ũhoro wao wa kũnyũmĩrĩria.
19 Now, Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the vale of Elah, ready to fight with the Philistines.
Na rĩrĩ, marĩ hamwe na Saũlũ na andũ othe a Isiraeli kĩanda-inĩ kĩa Ela makĩrũa na Afilisti.”
20 So then David rose up early in the morning, and entrusted the sheep to a keeper, and took up [the provisions] and went his way, as Jesse had commanded him, —and came into the circular rampart, as, the force, was going forth into the ranks, and shouted for the fight.
Kwarooka gũkĩa-rĩ, Daudi agĩtiga mbũri irĩ na mũrĩithi, akĩoya mĩrigo, akiumagara agĩthiĩ, o ta ũrĩa Jesii aamwathĩrĩire. Nake agĩkinya kambĩ-inĩ o rĩrĩa mbũtũ cia ita cioimagaraga ikangʼethanĩre, irĩ na mbugĩrĩrio ya mbaara.
21 So Israel and the Philistines set in array for battle, army against army.
Andũ a Isiraeli na Afilisti maaharagĩria ita ciao igaikara ingʼethanĩire.
22 Then David entrusted the provisions that were upon him to the care of the keeper of the stores, and ran unto the ranks, —and came and asked for the welfare of his brethren.
Nake Daudi agĩtiga indo iria aakuuĩte harĩ mũndũ ũrĩa wamenyagĩrĩra indo, agĩtengʼera harĩa ikundi icio cia mbaara ciarĩ na akĩgeithia ariũ a nyina.
23 Now, as he was speaking with them, lo! the champion coming up, Goliath the Philistine, by name, of Gath, [coming up] out of the ranks of the Philistines, and he spake according to these words, —and David heard [them].
Rĩrĩa aaragia nao, Goliathũ, njamba ĩyo ya Afilisti kuuma Gathu, ĩkiumĩra gĩkundi-inĩ kĩayo ĩkĩanagĩrĩra ciugo cia kũmoogita o ta ũrĩa yamenyerete, nake Daudi akĩigua.
24 Now, all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from before him, and feared exceedingly.
Rĩrĩa andũ a Isiraeli moonire mũndũ ũcio, othe makĩmũũrĩra marĩ na guoya mũnene.
25 And the men of Israel said—Have ye seen this man that is coming up? For, to reproach Israel, is he coming. So then it shall be, that, the man that shall smite him, the same, will the king enrich with great riches, and, his own daughter, will give him, and, his father’s house, will he make free in Israel.
Na rĩrĩ, andũ a Isiraeli mooranagia atĩrĩ, “Nĩmũkuona ũrĩa mũndũ ũyũ aikaraga akiumagĩra? Oimagĩra nĩgeetha oogite Isiraeli. Mũthamaki nĩekũheana ũtonga mũingĩ kũrĩ mũndũ ũrĩa ũngĩmũraga. Nĩegũcooka ahe mũndũ ũcio mũirĩtu wake amũhikie, nayo nyũmba ya ithe ndĩgũcooka kũrĩha igooti thĩinĩ wa Isiraeli.”
26 Then spake David unto the men that were standing by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that shall smite yonder Philistine, and so shall take away reproach from off Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he hath reproached the ranks of a Living God?
Daudi akĩũria andũ arĩa maarũngiĩ hakuhĩ nake atĩrĩ, “Atĩ mũndũ ũrĩa ũkũũraga Mũfilisti ũyũ, na ehererie Isiraeli thoni ici egwĩkwo atĩa? Mũfilisti ũyũ ũtarĩ mũruu nake nũũ, atĩ nĩguo oogite ita cia Ngai ũrĩa ũrĩ muoyo?”
27 And the people answered him, according to this word saying, —So, shall it be done to the man that shall smite him.
Nao magĩcookera ũhoro ũcio maaragia, makĩmwĩra atĩrĩ, “Ũguo nĩguo gũgwĩkwo kũrĩ mũndũ ũrĩa ũkũmũũraga.”
28 Now Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men, —then was kindled the anger of Eliab against David, and he said—Wherefore is it that thou hast come down? and to whom hast thou entrusted those few sheep in the wilderness? I, know thy pride, and the foolishness of thy heart, for, to see the battle, hast thou come down.
Nĩnjũũĩ ũrĩa ũrĩ mwĩtĩĩi, na ũrĩa ngoro yaku ĩrĩ maramari; ũikũrũkĩte gũkũ no ũndũ wa kwĩrorera mbaara.”
29 And David said, What have I done, now? Was there not, a cause?
Daudi akiuga atĩrĩ, “Kaĩ ndagĩĩka atĩa? Anga ndiagĩrĩirwo nĩ kwaria?”
30 Then turned he from him unto another, and said—according to this word, —and the people returned him an answer, like the first.
Nake agĩcooka akĩhũgũkĩra mũndũ ũngĩ na akĩmwarĩria ũhoro o ro ũcio, nao andũ makĩmũcookeria ũhoro o ta mbere.
31 And the words which David spake were overheard, —and, when they told them before Saul, he summoned him.
Ũhoro ũcio Daudi oigire nĩwaiguirwo, ũkĩmenyithio Saũlũ, nake Saũlũ agĩtũmana ageetwo.
32 And David said unto Saul, Let not the heart of my lord fail, because of him, —thy servant, will go, and fight with this Philistine.
Daudi akĩĩra Saũlũ atĩrĩ, “Ndũkareke mũndũ o na ũmwe akue ngoro nĩ ũndũ wa Mũfilisti ũyũ; ndungata yaku nĩĩgũthiĩ ĩkarũe nake.”
33 And Saul said unto David—Thou art not able to go against this Philistine, to fight with him, —for, a youth, art, thou, but, he, a man of war, from his youth.
Saũlũ akĩmũcookeria atĩrĩ, “Ndũngĩhota gũthiĩ kũrũa na Mũfilisti ũyũ; wee ũrĩ o mũndũ mũnini, nake atũire arũaga mbaara kuuma arĩ o mũnini.”
34 Then said David unto Saul, Thy servant used to tend his father’s sheep, —and there would come a lion, or a bear, and carry off a lamb out of the flock;
No Daudi akĩĩra Saũlũ atĩrĩ, “Niĩ ndungata yaku ndũire ndĩithagia ngʼondu cia baba. Na rĩrĩa mũrũũthi kana nduba ĩngĩnyiita na ĩkuue ngʼondu kuuma rũũru-inĩ,
35 and I would go out after him, and smite him, and rescue it out of his mouth, —and, if he rose against me, I would catch him by his beard, and smite him, and slay him.
ndĩmĩrũmagĩrĩra, ngamĩgũtha, ngateithũra ngʼondu ĩyo kuuma kanua-inĩ kayo. Na rĩrĩa yenda kũndũgĩrĩra ngamĩnyiita nderu, ngamĩgũtha, ngamĩũraga.
36 Thy servant could slay, either a lion or a bear, —and, this uncircumcised Philistine, shall become, as one of them, for he hath reproached the ranks of a Living God.
Ndungata yaku yanooraga mũrũũthi na nduba o cierĩ; Mũfilisti ũyũ ũtarĩ mũruu o nake egũtuĩka o ta ĩmwe yacio, tondũ nĩogitĩte ita rĩa Ngai ũrĩa ũrĩ muoyo.
37 And David said, Yahweh, who hath rescued me out of the power of the lion, and out of the power of the bear, he, will rescue us out of the hand of this Philistine. Then said Saul unto David—Go! and, Yahweh, will be with thee.
Jehova ũrĩa wahonokirie harĩ gĩthu kĩa mũrũũthi o na gĩthu kĩa nduba-rĩ, nĩekũhonokia guoko-inĩ kwa Mũfilisti ũyũ.” Saũlũ akĩĩra Daudi atĩrĩ, “Thiĩ, na Jehova arokorwo hamwe nawe.”
38 And Saul clad David with his own military coat, and set a helmet of bronze upon his head, —and clad him with a coat of mail.
39 And David girded his sword above his military coat, but was reluctant to go, for he had not proved them, —so David said unto Saul—I cannot go in these, for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.
Daudi akĩĩoha rũhiũ rwake rwa njora igũrũ rĩa nguo icio, na akĩgeria gũkinyũkia, tondũ ndaacimenyerete. No akĩĩra Saũlũ atĩrĩ, “Ndingĩhota gũthiĩ na indo ici, nĩ ũndũ ndicimenyerete.” Nake agĩciruta.
40 Then took he his stick in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the torrent-bed, and put them in the shepherd’s-pouch which he had—even in the wallet, and had his sling in his hand, —and so drew near unto the Philistine.
Agĩcooka akĩnyiita rũthanju rwake na guoko, agĩthuura tũhiga tũtano tũnyoroku kuuma karũũĩ-inĩ, agĩtwĩkĩra kamũhuko-inĩ gake ka mũrĩithi, akĩnyiita kĩgũtha gĩake na guoko, agĩthiĩ, agĩkuhĩrĩria Mũfilisti ũcio.
41 And the Philistine came on and on, and drew near unto David, —and the man carrying the shield was before him.
Hĩndĩ ĩyo Mũfilisti ũcio no gũũka ookaga akuhĩrĩrie Daudi, na mũndũ ũrĩa wamũkuuagĩra ngo arĩ mbere yake.
42 And, when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him, —for he was a youth, and ruddy, a stripling of fair countenance.
Nake akĩrora Daudi, akĩona atĩ aarĩ o mũndũ mũnini, mũtune mwĩrĩ na agathakara, nake akĩmũira.
43 Then said the Philistine unto David, A dog, am, I, that thou art coming unto me, with sticks? And the Philistine cursed David, by his god.
Akĩĩra Daudi atĩrĩ, “Kaĩ niĩ ndĩ ngui atĩ nĩguo ũgĩũke kũrĩ niĩ na thanju?” Nake Mũfilisti ũcio akĩruma Daudi akĩgwetaga ngai ciake.
44 And the Philistine said unto David, —Come, unto me, that I may give thy flesh to the birds of heaven, and to the beasts of the field.
Akĩmwĩra atĩrĩ, “Ũka haha, na nĩngũhe nyoni cia rĩera-inĩ na nyamũ cia gĩthaka nyama ciaku!”
45 Then said David unto the Philistine—Thou, art coming unto me with sword, and with spear, and with javelin, —but, I, am coming unto thee in the name of Yahweh of hosts, God of the ranks of Israel which thou hast reproached.
Daudi akĩĩra Mũfilisti ũcio atĩrĩ, “Wee ũroka kũrĩ niĩ na rũhiũ rwa njora, na itimũ na kĩberethi, no niĩ ndĩroka kũrĩ we na rĩĩtwa rĩa Jehova Mwene-Hinya-Wothe, Ngai ũrĩa mwene ita rĩa Isiraeli, ũrĩa wee ũnyararithĩtie.
46 This day, will Yahweh deliver thee into my hand, and I will smite thee, and take thy head from off thee, and will give thy dead body and the dead bodies of the host of Philistines, this day, unto the birds of heaven, and unto the wild beasts of the earth, —that all the earth may know that Israel hath a God;
Ũmũthĩ Jehova nĩegũkũneana kũrĩ niĩ, na nĩngũkũgũtha ũgwe thĩ, na ngũtinie kĩongo. Ũmũthĩ nĩngũhe nyoni cia rĩera-inĩ na nyamũ cia gĩthaka ciimba cia ita rĩa Afilisti, nayo thĩ yothe ĩmenye atĩ nĩ kũrĩ Ngai thĩinĩ wa Isiraeli.
47 and that all this gathered host may know that, not with sword and with spear, doth Yahweh save, —for, unto Yahweh, belongeth the battle, and he will deliver you into our hand.
Arĩa othe moonganĩte haha nĩmekũmenya atĩ Jehova ndahonokanagia na rũhiũ rwa njora kana itimũ; nĩgũkorwo mbaara nĩ ya Jehova, nĩekũmũneana inyuothe moko-inĩ maitũ.”
48 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew near to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the ranks to meet the Philistine.
49 And David thrust his hand into his pouch, and took from thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine, in his forehead, —that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell upon his face, to the earth.
Agĩikia guoko mondo-inĩ yake akĩruta kahiga kamwe, akĩhiũria kĩgũtha, nake akĩgũtha Mũfilisti ũcio thiithi. Kahiga kau gagĩtoonyerera thiithi-inĩ wake, akĩgũa, agĩturumithia ũthiũ wake thĩ.
50 Thus David prevailed over the Philistine, with the sling and with the stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him, —but, sword, was there none in the hand of David.
Nĩ ũndũ ũcio Daudi akĩhoota Mũfilisti ũcio na kĩgũtha na kahiga; ndaarĩ na rũhiũ rwa njora guoko-inĩ gwake akĩgũtha Mũfilisti ũcio na akĩmũũraga.
51 So David ran, and stood by the Philistine, and took his sword and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off, therewith, his head, —and, when the Philistines saw that their hero was slain, they fled.
52 Then arose the men of Israel and Judah, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, as far as the entrance into Gath, and as far as the gates of Ekron, —and the slain of the Philistines fell in the way to the two gates, even as far as Gath and as far as Ekron.
Andũ a Isiraeli na Juda makiumĩra maanĩrĩire, makĩingatithia Afilisti nginya itoonyero rĩa Gathu na nginya ihingo-inĩ cia Ekironi. Arĩa moragĩtwo maagwĩte njĩra-inĩ ĩrĩa ĩthiiaga Sharaimu nginya Gathu na Ekironi.
53 And the sons of Israel returned from hotly pursuing the Philistines, —and plundered their camps.
Rĩrĩa andũ a Isiraeli maacookire kuuma kũingatithia Afilisti, magĩtaha indo kambĩ-inĩ ciao.
54 And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it into Jerusalem, —but, his armour, put he into his tent.
55 And, when Saul saw David going forth to meet the Philistine, he said unto Abner, prince of the host, Whose son is the young man, Abner? And Abner said, By the life of thy soul, O king! I know not.
Na rĩrĩa Saũlũ eroreire Daudi agĩthiĩ gũtũnga Mũfilisti, akĩũria Abina, mũnene wa mbũtũ cia ita, atĩrĩ, “Mwanake ũyũ nĩ mũriũ waũ?” Abina akĩmũcookeria atĩrĩ, “Ti-itherũ o ta ũrĩa ũtũũraga muoyo wee mũthamaki, niĩ ndiũĩ nĩ waũ.”
56 Then said the king, —Ask, thou, whose son the stripling is?
Nake mũthamaki akĩmwĩra atĩrĩ, “Ta gĩtuĩrie ũmenye mwanake ũcio nĩ mũriũ waũ.”
57 And, when David returned from smiting the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul, —with the head of the Philistine in his hand.
58 And Saul said unto him, Whose son art, thou, O young man? And David said, Son of thy servant Jesse, the Bethlehemite.
Saũlũ akĩmũũria atĩrĩ, “Mwanake ũyũ, ũrĩ mũriũ waũ?” Nake Daudi akĩmwĩra atĩrĩ, “Niĩ ndĩ mũrũ wa ndungata yaku Jesii wa Bethilehemu.”
