1 Samuel 17
1 And the Philistines gathered together their hosts, unto battle, and they were gathered together unto Socoh, which belongeth unto Judah, —and they encamped between Socoh and Azekah in Ephes-dammim;
Aber die Philister sammelten ihr Heere zum Krieg, und zwar zogen sie sich nach Socho, das zu Juda gehört, zusammen und bezogen bei Ephes Dammin zwischen Socho und Aseka ein Lager.
2 and, Saul and the men of Israel, gathered themselves together, and encamped in the vale of Elah, and set the army in array against the Philistines.
Saul aber und die israelitische Mannschaft hatten sich versammelt und ein Lager im Terebinthenthale bezogen und rüsteten sich zum Angriff auf die Philister.
3 And, the Philistines, were standing near the hill on one side, and, the Israelites, were standing near the hill on the other side, —while, the valley, was between them.
Die Philister hatten sich auf der einen, Israel auf der anderen Seite am Berge hin aufgestellt, sodaß das Thal zwischen ihnen lag.
4 And there came forth a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, Goliath, his name, from Gath, —his height, six cubits and a span;
Da trat der Mittelsmann aus den Reihen der Philister hervor; der hieß Goliath aus Gath, war sechs Ellen und eine Spanne hoch,
5 with a helmet of bronze on his head, and, with a scaly coat of mail, was he clad, —the weight of the coat, being five thousand shekels of bronze;
hatte einen Helm von Erz auf dem Haupt und trug einen Schuppenpanzer; und zwar belief sich das Gewicht des Panzers auf 5000 Sekel Erz.
6 and, greaves of bronze, on his feet, —and, a javelin of bronze, between his shoulders;
An den beinen trug er eherne Schienen und einen ehernen Schild zwischen den Schultern.
7 and, the shaft of his spear, was like a weaver’s beam, and, the flashing head of his spear, was six hundred shekels of iron, —and, his shield-bearer, was coming on before him.
Sein Speerschaft aber war wie ein Weberbaum, und die Spitze seines Speers betrug 600 Sekel Eisen, und sein Schildträger schritt vor ihm her.
8 And he took his stand, and cried unto the ranks of Israel, and said unto them, Wherefore should ye come out, to set in array for battle? Am not, I, a Philistine, while, ye, are servants unto Saul? Choose you a man, and let him come down unto me:
Der trat auf und rief den reihen Israels die Worte zu: Warum zieht ihr aus, um euch zum Angriff zu rüsten? Bin ich nicht der Philister und ihr Sauls Knechte? Wählt einen von euch aus, daß er gegen mich auftrete!
9 If he prevail in fighting with me, and smite me, then will we become your servants, —but, if, I, prevail over him, and smite him, then shall ye become our servants, and serve, us.
Vermag er mit mir zu kämpfen und besiegt mich, so wollen wir euch unterthan sein; bin aber ich ihm überlegen und besiege ihn, so werdet ihr uns unterthan und müßt uns dienen!
10 And the Philistine said—I, reproach the ranks of Israel, this day, —give me a man, that we may fight together.
Und der Philister rief: Ich habe am heutigen Tage die Reihen Israels verhöhnt: schafft mir einen Gegner, daß wir miteinander kämpfen!
11 When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and feared exceedingly.
Als saul und ganz Israel diese reden des Philisters hörten, erschraken sie und fürchteten sich sehr.
12 Now, David, was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem-judah, whose, name, was Jesse, and, who, had eight sons, —and, the man, in the days of Saul was old, advanced in years.
David aber war der Sohn dieses Ephrathiters aus Bethlehem in Juda; der hieß Isai und hatte acht Söhne. In den Tagen Sauls war der Mann alt und in die Jahre gekommen.
13 And the three eldest sons of Jesse had followed Saul to the battle, —and, the names of his three sons who went into the battle, were Eliab the firstborn, and, the next to him, Abinadab, and, the third, Shammah.
Die drei ältesten Söhne Isais aber waren unter Saul in den Krieg gezogen. Seine drei Söhne, die in den Krieg gezogen waren, hießen: der älteste Eliab, sein zweiter Abinadab und der dritte Samma.
14 But, as for David, he, was the youngest, —and, the three eldest, followed Saul;
David aber war der jüngste; die drei älteren waren unter Saul ausgezogen.
15 whereas, David, kept going and returning from Saul, —to tend his father’s sheep at Bethlehem.
David aber ging öfter von Saul hinweg heim, um in Bethlehem seines Vaters Schafe zu hüten.
16 And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, —and presented himself forty days.
Aber der Philister trat früh und spät herzu und stellte sich hin, vierzig Tage lang.
17 And Jesse said unto David his son, Take, I pray thee, unto thy brethren—this ephah of parched corn, and these ten loaves, —and run to the camp unto thy brethren;
Nun gebot einst Isai seinem Sohne David: Nimm doch für deine brüder ein Epha von diesem Röstkorn und zehn Laibe von diesem Brot und bringe sei eilends deinen Brüdern ins Lager;
18 also these ten slices of soft cheese, shalt thou take to the captain of their thousand, —and, as for thy brethren, give good heed to their welfare, their pledge, also shalt thou receive.
und diese zehn Milchkäse bringe dem Hauptmann und erkundige dich nach dem Befinden deiner Brüder und laß dir ein Pfand von ihnen geben.
19 Now, Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the vale of Elah, ready to fight with the Philistines.
Saul und sie und die ganze israelitische Mannschaft befinden sich nämlich im Terebinthenthal im Kampfe mit den Philistern.
20 So then David rose up early in the morning, and entrusted the sheep to a keeper, and took up [the provisions] and went his way, as Jesse had commanded him, —and came into the circular rampart, as, the force, was going forth into the ranks, and shouted for the fight.
Da überließ David am andern Morgen früh die Schafe einem Hüter, lud auf, und machte sich dem Befehl Isais gemäß auf den Weg. Als er zur Wagenburg kam, rückte das Heer eben in Schlachtordnung aus, und man erhob das Kriegsgeschrei.
21 So Israel and the Philistines set in array for battle, army against army.
Sowohl Israel als die Philister standen kampfbereit, Reihe gegen Reihe.
22 Then David entrusted the provisions that were upon him to the care of the keeper of the stores, and ran unto the ranks, —and came and asked for the welfare of his brethren.
Da entledigte sich David seines Gepäcks, überließ es dem Troßwächter und lief in die Schlachtreihe. Als er hinkam, fragte er seine Brüder nach ihrem Ergehen.
23 Now, as he was speaking with them, lo! the champion coming up, Goliath the Philistine, by name, of Gath, [coming up] out of the ranks of the Philistines, and he spake according to these words, —and David heard [them].
Während er nun mit ihnen sprach, kam eben der Mittelsmann - er hieß der Philister Goliath aus Gath - aus den Reihen der Philister heran und führte die erwähnten Reden, so daß David es hörte.
24 Now, all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from before him, and feared exceedingly.
Als aber die israelitischen Krieger den Mann erblickten, flohen sie alle vor ihm und fürchteten sich sehr.
25 And the men of Israel said—Have ye seen this man that is coming up? For, to reproach Israel, is he coming. So then it shall be, that, the man that shall smite him, the same, will the king enrich with great riches, and, his own daughter, will give him, and, his father’s house, will he make free in Israel.
Und einer aus Israel rief: Habt ihr den Mann gesehen, der da herankommt? Um Israel zu verhöhnen, kommt er heran, und wer ihn erschlägt, den will der König zu einem sehr reichen Manne machen und will ihm seine Tochter geben und seines Vaters Familie steuerfrei machen in Israel!
26 Then spake David unto the men that were standing by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that shall smite yonder Philistine, and so shall take away reproach from off Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he hath reproached the ranks of a Living God?
Da fragte David die neben ihm stehenden Männer: Was soll demjenigen geschehen, der diesen Philister da erschlägt und die Schmach von Israel wegnimmt? Denn wer ist dieser unbeschnittene Philister, daß er die Reihen des lebendigen Gottes höhnen durfte?
27 And the people answered him, according to this word saying, —So, shall it be done to the man that shall smite him.
Die Leute antworteten ihm ganz ebenso: So und so wird dem, der ihn erschlägt, geschehen.
28 Now Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men, —then was kindled the anger of Eliab against David, and he said—Wherefore is it that thou hast come down? and to whom hast thou entrusted those few sheep in the wilderness? I, know thy pride, and the foolishness of thy heart, for, to see the battle, hast thou come down.
Als aber sein ältester bruder Eliab hörte, wie er mit den Männern sprach, geriet Eliab in heftigen Zorn über David und rief: Wozu bist du eigentlich hergekommen und wem hast du jene paar Schafe in der Steppe überlassen? Ich kenne deine Frechheit und deinen boshaften Sinn: ja, um den Krieg anzusehen, bist du hergekommen!
29 And David said, What have I done, now? Was there not, a cause?
David erwiderte: Nun, was habe ich denn gethan? Es war ja bloß ein Wort.
30 Then turned he from him unto another, and said—according to this word, —and the people returned him an answer, like the first.
Und er wandte sich von ihm ab einem andern zu und fragte ihn in derselben Weise, und die Leute erwiderten ihm wie das erste Mal.
31 And the words which David spake were overheard, —and, when they told them before Saul, he summoned him.
Als nun kund wurde, wie david sich aussprach, machte man Saul Mitteilung davon, und er ließ ihn kommen.
32 And David said unto Saul, Let not the heart of my lord fail, because of him, —thy servant, will go, and fight with this Philistine.
Da redete David Saul an: Mein Herr lasse den Mut nicht sinken: dein Sklave wird hingehen und mit diesem Philister kämpfen.
33 And Saul said unto David—Thou art not able to go against this Philistine, to fight with him, —for, a youth, art, thou, but, he, a man of war, from his youth.
Saul erwiderte David: Du kannst diesem Philister nicht gegenübertreten, um mit ihm zu kämpfen, denn du bist ein Knabe, und er ein Kriegsmann von Jugend auf!
34 Then said David unto Saul, Thy servant used to tend his father’s sheep, —and there would come a lion, or a bear, and carry off a lamb out of the flock;
David entgegnete Saul: dein Sklave hütete seinem Vater die Schafe: wenn da ein Löwe oder ein Bär kam und ein Schaf von der Herde forttrug,
35 and I would go out after him, and smite him, and rescue it out of his mouth, —and, if he rose against me, I would catch him by his beard, and smite him, and slay him.
so lief ich ihm nach und schlug ihn und riß es ihm aus dem Rachen; leistete er mir aber Widerstand, so faßte ich ihn am bart und schlug ihn tot.
36 Thy servant could slay, either a lion or a bear, —and, this uncircumcised Philistine, shall become, as one of them, for he hath reproached the ranks of a Living God.
Löwen, wie Bären hat dein Sklave erschlagen, und diesem unbeschnittenem Philister soll es ebenso ergehen, wie einem von jenen, weil er die Schlachtreihen des lebendigen Gottes verhöhnt hat!
37 And David said, Yahweh, who hath rescued me out of the power of the lion, and out of the power of the bear, he, will rescue us out of the hand of this Philistine. Then said Saul unto David—Go! and, Yahweh, will be with thee.
David schloß: Jahwe, der mich aus den Krallen der Löwen und Bären errettet hat, der wird mich aus der Hand dieses Philisters erretten! Da sprach Saul zu David: Gehe hin, und Jahwe wird mit dir sein!
38 And Saul clad David with his own military coat, and set a helmet of bronze upon his head, —and clad him with a coat of mail.
Und Saul legte david seinen Waffenrock an und setzte ihm einen ehernen Helm aufs Haupt und legte ihm einen Panzer an,
39 And David girded his sword above his military coat, but was reluctant to go, for he had not proved them, —so David said unto Saul—I cannot go in these, for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.
und David gürtete sein Schwert über seinen Waffenrock und bemüht sich zu gehen, ich habe es noch nie versucht! Da zog man ihm die Rüstung wieder aus,
40 Then took he his stick in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the torrent-bed, and put them in the shepherd’s-pouch which he had—even in the wallet, and had his sling in his hand, —and so drew near unto the Philistine.
und er nahm seinen Stock in die Hand und suchte sich fünf glatte Steine aus dem Bachthal aus und legte sie in die Hirtentasche, die er besaß, und in den Bausch des Gewands, nahm seine Schleuder zur Hand und trat gegen den Philister vor.
41 And the Philistine came on and on, and drew near unto David, —and the man carrying the shield was before him.
Der Philister rückte aber immer näher an David heran, und der Mann, der ihm den Schild trug, ging vor ihm her.
42 And, when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him, —for he was a youth, and ruddy, a stripling of fair countenance.
Als aber der Philister hinsah und david erblickte, verachtete er ihn, weil er noch ein Knabe war und rötlich und von schmuckem Aussehen.
43 Then said the Philistine unto David, A dog, am, I, that thou art coming unto me, with sticks? And the Philistine cursed David, by his god.
Und der Philister redete David an: Bin ich denn ein Hund, daß du mit Stöcken zu mir kommst? Und der Philister verfluchte David bei seinem Gott.
44 And the Philistine said unto David, —Come, unto me, that I may give thy flesh to the birds of heaven, and to the beasts of the field.
Und der Philister rief david zu: Komm her, daß ich dein Fleisch den Vögeln unter dem Himmel und den Tieren auf dem Feld übergebe!
45 Then said David unto the Philistine—Thou, art coming unto me with sword, and with spear, and with javelin, —but, I, am coming unto thee in the name of Yahweh of hosts, God of the ranks of Israel which thou hast reproached.
David entgegnete dem Philister: Du trittst mir entgegen mit Schwert, Speer und Schild; ich aber trete dir entgegen mit dem Namen Jahwes der Heerscharen, des Gottes der Schlachtreihen Israels, die du verhöhnt hast:
46 This day, will Yahweh deliver thee into my hand, and I will smite thee, and take thy head from off thee, and will give thy dead body and the dead bodies of the host of Philistines, this day, unto the birds of heaven, and unto the wild beasts of the earth, —that all the earth may know that Israel hath a God;
am heutigen Tage hat dich Jahwe in meine Hnad geliefert, daß ich dich erschlagen und dir den Kopf abhauen werde, und deinen Leichnam und die Leichname des Philisterheeres werde ich heute noch den Vögeln unter dem Himmel und den wilden Tieren auf der Erde übergeben, daß die ganze Erde erkennen soll, daß Israel einen Gott hat,
47 and that all this gathered host may know that, not with sword and with spear, doth Yahweh save, —for, unto Yahweh, belongeth the battle, and he will deliver you into our hand.
und daß diese ganze Versammlung erkennen soll, daß Jahwe nicht durch Schwert und Speer Rettung schafft; denn Jahwes Sache ist der Kampf, und er wird euch in unsere Hand liefern.
48 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew near to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the ranks to meet the Philistine.
Als nun der Philister sich aufmachte und herankam und david entgegen ging, lief david schnell dem Philister entgegen nach der Schlachtreihe zu;
49 And David thrust his hand into his pouch, and took from thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine, in his forehead, —that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell upon his face, to the earth.
dann griff David mit seiner Hand nach der Tasche, nahm einen Stein heraus, schleuderte ihn und traf den Philister an die Stirn. Und der Stein drang in seine Stirne ein, so daß er auf sein Angesicht zur Erde niederfiel.
50 Thus David prevailed over the Philistine, with the sling and with the stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him, —but, sword, was there none in the hand of David.
Und David überwand den Philister mit Schleuder und Stein und schlug den Philister tot, obwohl David kein Schwert zur Hnad hatte.
51 So David ran, and stood by the Philistine, and took his sword and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off, therewith, his head, —and, when the Philistines saw that their hero was slain, they fled.
David aber lief hin, trat neben den Philister, ergriff sein Schwert, zog es aus der Scheide und tötete ihn vollends. Dann hieb er ihm damit den Kopf ab. Als aber die Philister sahen, daß ihr Riese tot war, ergriffen sie die Flucht.
52 Then arose the men of Israel and Judah, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, as far as the entrance into Gath, and as far as the gates of Ekron, —and the slain of the Philistines fell in the way to the two gates, even as far as Gath and as far as Ekron.
Aber die Männer von Israel und Juda rafften sich auf, erhoben den Kriegsruf und verfolgten die Philister bis nach Gath hin und bis vor die Thore von Ekron, so daß die Erschlagenen der Philister noch in den Thorwegen fielen, sowohl was Gath als was Ekron anlangt.
53 And the sons of Israel returned from hotly pursuing the Philistines, —and plundered their camps.
Darauf kehrten die Israeliten von der Verfolgung der Philister zurück und plünderten ihr Lager.
54 And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it into Jerusalem, —but, his armour, put he into his tent.
David aber nahm den Kopf des Philisters und brachte ihn nach Jerusalem und seine Rüstung legte er in sein Zelt.
55 And, when Saul saw David going forth to meet the Philistine, he said unto Abner, prince of the host, Whose son is the young man, Abner? And Abner said, By the life of thy soul, O king! I know not.
Als Saul David dem Philister entgegen schreiten sah, fragte er seinen Feldherrn Abner: Wessen Sohn ist doch der Jüngling, Abner? Abner antwortete: So wahr du lebst, o König, ich weiß es nicht!
56 Then said the king, —Ask, thou, whose son the stripling is?
Der König erwiderte: Erkundige dich, wessen Sohn der junge Mann ist.
57 And, when David returned from smiting the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul, —with the head of the Philistine in his hand.
Als dann David nach der Erlegung des Philisters zurückkehrte, nahm ihn Abner und führte ihn vor Saul, während er noch den Kopf des Philisters in der Hand hielt.
58 And Saul said unto him, Whose son art, thou, O young man? And David said, Son of thy servant Jesse, the Bethlehemite.
Saul fragte ihn: Wessen Sohn bist du, Jüngling? David antwortete: Der Sohn deines Sklaven Isai zu Bethlehem.
