< 1 Samuel 17 >
1 And the Philistines gathered together their hosts, unto battle, and they were gathered together unto Socoh, which belongeth unto Judah, —and they encamped between Socoh and Azekah in Ephes-dammim;
To naah Philistin kaminawk loe misatuk hanah, Judah prae Sokoh vangpui ah amkhueng o; Sokoh hoi Azekah vangpui salak ih Ephes-Dammim ah ataihaih im to a sak o.
2 and, Saul and the men of Israel, gathered themselves together, and encamped in the vale of Elah, and set the army in array against the Philistines.
Saul hoi Israel kaminawk doeh nawnto amkhueng o toeng moe, Elah azawn ah atai o pacoengah, Philistin kaminawk hoi angtuk hanah angphaeng o.
3 And, the Philistines, were standing near the hill on one side, and, the Israelites, were standing near the hill on the other side, —while, the valley, was between them.
Philistinnawk loe ho bang ih mae ah oh o, Israel kaminawk doeh hae bang ih mae ah oh o, nihcae salakah azawn to oh.
4 And there came forth a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, Goliath, his name, from Gath, —his height, six cubits and a span;
Philistin kaminawk ataihaih ahmuen ah Gath acaeng Goliah, tiah ahmin kaom kami to oh; anih loe dong tarukto pacoeng kar to sang.
5 with a helmet of bronze on his head, and, with a scaly coat of mail, was he clad, —the weight of the coat, being five thousand shekels of bronze;

6 and, greaves of bronze, on his feet, —and, a javelin of bronze, between his shoulders;
A khok to sumkamling hoiah padap moe, a hnukbang ah sumkamling tayae to avak.
7 and, the shaft of his spear, was like a weaver’s beam, and, the flashing head of his spear, was six hundred shekels of iron, —and, his shield-bearer, was coming on before him.
Anih ih tayae haa loe caham haa baktiah ah noet; anih ih tayae loe shekel cumvai tarukto azit; anih ih aphaw sinkung loe anih hmaa ah caeh.
8 And he took his stand, and cried unto the ranks of Israel, and said unto them, Wherefore should ye come out, to set in array for battle? Am not, I, a Philistine, while, ye, are servants unto Saul? Choose you a man, and let him come down unto me:
Goliath loe angdoet moe, Israel misatuh angraengnawk khaeah, Tipongah misatuk hanah nang zoh o loe? Kai loe Philistin kami ah ka oh, nangcae loe Saul ih tamna ah na ai maw na oh o? Kai hoi angtuk hanah kami maeto qoi oh, anih to kai khaeah angzo o sak tathuk ah.
9 If he prevail in fighting with me, and smite me, then will we become your servants, —but, if, I, prevail over him, and smite him, then shall ye become our servants, and serve, us.
Anih mah kai tuh thaih moe, na hum nahaeloe, nangcae ih tamna ah ka oh o han; toe anih to ka pazawk moe, ka hum nahaeloe, nangcae doeh kaicae ih tamna ah om oh loe, kaicae ih tok to sah oh, tiah a naa.
10 And the Philistine said—I, reproach the ranks of Israel, this day, —give me a man, that we may fight together.
Philistin kami mah, Vaihniah Israel misatuh angraengnawk hoi angtuk hanah ka kawk, kami maeto mah na patoeh oh, anih hoiah kang tuk hoi han, tiah a naa.
11 When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and feared exceedingly.
Philistin kami ih lok to Saul hoi Israel kaminawk mah thaih o naah, palungboeng o moe, a zit o.
12 Now, David, was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem-judah, whose, name, was Jesse, and, who, had eight sons, —and, the man, in the days of Saul was old, advanced in years.
Judah prae Bethlehem vangpui ah kaom, Ephrathah kami David ampa Jesse loe, capa tazetto sak; anih ih saningcoeh capa thumtonawk loe Saul ih misatuh kami ah oh o.
13 And the three eldest sons of Jesse had followed Saul to the battle, —and, the names of his three sons who went into the battle, were Eliab the firstborn, and, the next to him, Abinadab, and, the third, Shammah.
Jesse capa kacoeh thumtonawk loe misa angtukhaih ahmuen ah Saul hnukah bang o; misatuk naah kacaeh anih capa thumtonawk loe, a calu Eliab, hnetto haih capa Abinadab hoi thumto haih capa Shammah cae hae ni.
14 But, as for David, he, was the youngest, —and, the three eldest, followed Saul;

15 whereas, David, kept going and returning from Saul, —to tend his father’s sheep at Bethlehem.
Toe David loe Saul khae hoi Bethlehem ah ampa ih tuu toep hanah caeh.
16 And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, —and presented himself forty days.
Philistin kami mah ni quipalito thung, aduem akhawn tacawt moe, hang thuih.
17 And Jesse said unto David his son, Take, I pray thee, unto thy brethren—this ephah of parched corn, and these ten loaves, —and run to the camp unto thy brethren;
Jesse mah a caa David khaeah, Hae ah kaom daengh tangcae cang Ephah maeto hoi takaw kae hato sinh loe, namyanawk ataihaih ahmuen ah karangah thak paeh.
18 also these ten slices of soft cheese, shalt thou take to the captain of their thousand, —and, as for thy brethren, give good heed to their welfare, their pledge, also shalt thou receive.

19 Now, Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the vale of Elah, ready to fight with the Philistines.
Namyanawk hoi Israel kaminawk loe, Saul khaeah oh o boih moe, Elah azawn ah Philistinawk tuk hanah atai o, tiah a naa.
20 So then David rose up early in the morning, and entrusted the sheep to a keeper, and took up [the provisions] and went his way, as Jesse had commanded him, —and came into the circular rampart, as, the force, was going forth into the ranks, and shouted for the fight.
David loe khawnthaw ah angthawk moe, angmah ih tuunawk to tuutoep kami maeto khaeah aap, Jesse mah thuih ih lok baktih toengah, hmuenmaenawk to lak pacoengah, a caeh. Anih loe misatuh kaminawk misatuk han hang o li naah phak.
21 So Israel and the Philistines set in array for battle, army against army.
Israel misatuh kaminawk hoi Philistin misatuh kaminawk loe maeto hoi maeto misa angtuk hanah amsak o.
22 Then David entrusted the provisions that were upon him to the care of the keeper of the stores, and ran unto the ranks, —and came and asked for the welfare of his brethren.
David loe angmah ih hmuennawk to hmuenmae pakuemkung khaeah caehtaak, misa angtukhaih ahmuen ah a cawnh moe, amyanawk to ban sinh.
23 Now, as he was speaking with them, lo! the champion coming up, Goliath the Philistine, by name, of Gath, [coming up] out of the ranks of the Philistines, and he spake according to these words, —and David heard [them].
Nihcae hoi lokthuih o li naah, khenah, Gath ah kaom Philistin kaminawk thungah thacak koek, Goliath, tiah ahmin kaom kami loe Philistin misatuh kaminawk hmaa ah tacawt moe, a thuih zong ih lok baktih toengah, kami hnaphaih hoiah hangh let bae; anih hanghaih lok to David mah thaih.
24 Now, all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from before him, and feared exceedingly.
Israel kaminawk mah to kami to hnuk o naah, paroeai zit o moe, cawnh o taak boih.
25 And the men of Israel said—Have ye seen this man that is coming up? For, to reproach Israel, is he coming. So then it shall be, that, the man that shall smite him, the same, will the king enrich with great riches, and, his own daughter, will give him, and, his father’s house, will he make free in Israel.
Israel kaminawk mah, Hmaa bangah angzo hae kami hae na hnuk o maw? Israel kaminawk hnaphnaehaih hoiah ni angzoh; anih hum thaih kami loe siangpahrang mah pop parai tangqum to paek tih; a canu doeh zu ah paek ueloe, ampa ih imthung takoh boih doeh Israel prae thungah tamut conghaih loisak tih, tiah a naa o.
26 Then spake David unto the men that were standing by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that shall smite yonder Philistine, and so shall take away reproach from off Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he hath reproached the ranks of a Living God?
To naah David mah anih taengah angdoe kaminawk khaeah, Aicae Israel kaminawk hnaphnae hae Philistin kami hum kami loe timaw hnu tih? Kahing Sithaw ih misatuh kaminawk hnaphnae, tangyat hin aat ai hae Philistin kami loe mi aa? tiah a naa.
27 And the people answered him, according to this word saying, —So, shall it be done to the man that shall smite him.
To naah kaminawk mah anih khaeah, Anih hum thaih kami loe, to tiah sah pae tih, tiah a naa o.
28 Now Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men, —then was kindled the anger of Eliab against David, and he said—Wherefore is it that thou hast come down? and to whom hast thou entrusted those few sheep in the wilderness? I, know thy pride, and the foolishness of thy heart, for, to see the battle, hast thou come down.
David loe kaminawk hoiah lok apaeh, tiah amya kacoeh koek Eliab mah hnuk naah, David nuiah palungphui moe, anih khaeah, Tih sak hanah hae ah nang zoh loe? 29 And David said, What have I done, now? Was there not, a cause?
David mah, Timaw ka sak pazae moeng boeh? Vaihi lok ka thui thai mak ai maw? tiah a naa.
30 Then turned he from him unto another, and said—according to this word, —and the people returned him an answer, like the first.
To pacoengah kami maeto khaeah angqoi moe, to hmuen kawng to a thui let bae; to ih kaminawk mah a thuih pae tangcae lok to a thuih pae o let.
31 And the words which David spake were overheard, —and, when they told them before Saul, he summoned him.
David mah thuih ih lok to nihcae mah thaih o naah, Saul khaeah thuih pae o; to pongah Saul mah anih to kawksak.
32 And David said unto Saul, Let not the heart of my lord fail, because of him, —thy servant, will go, and fight with this Philistine.
David mah Saul khaeah, Mi kawbaktih doeh hae Philistin kami pongah palugboeng hmah nasoe; na tamna kai ka caeh moe, anih to ka tuk han, tiah a naa.
33 And Saul said unto David—Thou art not able to go against this Philistine, to fight with him, —for, a youth, art, thou, but, he, a man of war, from his youth.
Saul mah David khaeah, To Philistin kami tuk hanah na caeh thai tang mak ai; nang loe saning na nawk vop; anih loe nawkta nathuem hoi kamtong misatuh zong kami ah oh boeh, tiah a naa.
34 Then said David unto Saul, Thy servant used to tend his father’s sheep, —and there would come a lion, or a bear, and carry off a lamb out of the flock;
Toe David mah Saul khaeah, Na tamna kai loe pa ih tuu to ka toep pae; to naah kaipui hoi taqomnawk angzoh o moe, tuu takha thung ih tuunawk to kaek o naah,
35 and I would go out after him, and smite him, and rescue it out of his mouth, —and, if he rose against me, I would catch him by his beard, and smite him, and slay him.

36 Thy servant could slay, either a lion or a bear, —and, this uncircumcised Philistine, shall become, as one of them, for he hath reproached the ranks of a Living God.
Na tamna kai loe kaipui doeh, taqom doeh ka hum boeh; hae tangyat hin aat ai Philistin kami doeh, kahing Sithaw ih misatuh kaminawk to a hnaphnae pongah, to tiah ni om toeng tih.
37 And David said, Yahweh, who hath rescued me out of the power of the lion, and out of the power of the bear, he, will rescue us out of the hand of this Philistine. Then said Saul unto David—Go! and, Yahweh, will be with thee.
Kaipui hoi taqom ban thung hoiah kai pahlongkung, Angraeng loe Philistin kaminawk ban thung hoiah doeh na pahlong let tih, tiah a naa. Saul mah David khaeah, To tiah nahaeloe, Caeh ah, na taengah Angraeng om nasoe, tiah a naa.
38 And Saul clad David with his own military coat, and set a helmet of bronze upon his head, —and clad him with a coat of mail.
To pacoengah Saul mah David to angmah ih misa angvaenghaih aphaw to angkhuksak; misatukhaih khok padaphaih to abuensak moe, sumkamling lumuek to angmueksak.
39 And David girded his sword above his military coat, but was reluctant to go, for he had not proved them, —so David said unto Saul—I cannot go in these, for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.
David loe a khukbuen nuiah sumsen to pathlet; caeh han tha pathok, toe to baktih hmuennawk to angkhuk vai ai pongah hnaep ai. David mah Saul khaeah, Kang khuk zong ai pongah, ka caeh thai ai, tiah a naa. To pongah David mah aphaw to angkhring ving.
40 Then took he his stick in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the torrent-bed, and put them in the shepherd’s-pouch which he had—even in the wallet, and had his sling in his hand, —and so drew near unto the Philistine.
A ban ah cunghet to sinh, vacong ih palang thlung pangato a khuih moe, tuu toep naah avak ih pasah thungah pacaeng; a ban ah ngazai to sinh moe, Philistin kami to a hmaang.
41 And the Philistine came on and on, and drew near unto David, —and the man carrying the shield was before him.

42 And, when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him, —for he was a youth, and ruddy, a stripling of fair countenance.

43 Then said the Philistine unto David, A dog, am, I, that thou art coming unto me, with sticks? And the Philistine cursed David, by his god.

44 And the Philistine said unto David, —Come, unto me, that I may give thy flesh to the birds of heaven, and to the beasts of the field.
Anih mah David khaeah, Hae ah angzo ah, na ngan to van ih tavanawk hoi taw ih moinawk khaeah ka paek han, tiah a naa.
45 Then said David unto the Philistine—Thou, art coming unto me with sword, and with spear, and with javelin, —but, I, am coming unto thee in the name of Yahweh of hosts, God of the ranks of Israel which thou hast reproached.
David mah Philistin kami khaeah, Kai tuk hanah sumsen, tayae, aphaw hoiah nang zoh; toe kai loe na patoek ih misatuh kaminawk ih Angraeng, Israel misatuh kaminawk ih Sithaw hmin hoiah ni nang tuk hanah kang zoh.
46 This day, will Yahweh deliver thee into my hand, and I will smite thee, and take thy head from off thee, and will give thy dead body and the dead bodies of the host of Philistines, this day, unto the birds of heaven, and unto the wild beasts of the earth, —that all the earth may know that Israel hath a God;
Vaihniah Angraeng mah nang hae ka ban ah paek tih; nang to kang hum moe, na tahnong to kang takroek pae pat han; vaihniah Philistin misatuh kaminawk ih qok to van ih tavaanawk hoi long ih moinawk khaeah ka paek han, to tiah ni Israel kaminawk khaeah Sithaw oh, tiah long pum mah panoek tih.
47 and that all this gathered host may know that, not with sword and with spear, doth Yahweh save, —for, unto Yahweh, belongeth the battle, and he will deliver you into our hand.

48 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew near to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the ranks to meet the Philistine.

49 And David thrust his hand into his pouch, and took from thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine, in his forehead, —that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell upon his face, to the earth.
Angmah ih pasah to tapawh tathuk moe, palang thlung maeto a lak pacoengah, Philistin kami to lu pataeh ah zai phaek; to naah anih to long ah cangku hmawk.
50 Thus David prevailed over the Philistine, with the sling and with the stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him, —but, sword, was there none in the hand of David.
David loe a ban ah sumsen to sin ai, Philistin kami to ngazai hoi palang thlung hoiah misatuk moe, pazawk.
51 So David ran, and stood by the Philistine, and took his sword and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off, therewith, his head, —and, when the Philistines saw that their hero was slain, they fled.
David loe cawnh moe, anih ih tak nuiah angdoet; Philistin kami ih sumsen to a suekhaih tabu thung hoiah aphongh moe, a hum pacoengah, anih ih tahnong to takroek pat. Angmacae thung ih thacak koek kami loe duek boeh, tiah Philistin kaminawk mah hnuk o naah, hnuk angnawn o moe, cawnh o.
52 Then arose the men of Israel and Judah, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, as far as the entrance into Gath, and as far as the gates of Ekron, —and the slain of the Philistines fell in the way to the two gates, even as far as Gath and as far as Ekron.

54 And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it into Jerusalem, —but, his armour, put he into his tent.

55 And, when Saul saw David going forth to meet the Philistine, he said unto Abner, prince of the host, Whose son is the young man, Abner? And Abner said, By the life of thy soul, O king! I know not.
David mah Philistin kaminawk tuk hanah hmaang, tiah Saul mah hnuk naah, misatuh ukkung angraeng Abner khaeah, Hae thendoeng loe mi ih capa maw? tiah a naa. Abner mah, Nang na hing baktih toengah, aw siangpahrang, ka thui thai ai, tiah a naa.

57 And, when David returned from smiting the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul, —with the head of the Philistine in his hand.
