1 Chronicles 11
1 Then did all Israel gather themselves together to David, unto Hebron, saying, —Lo! thy bone and thy flesh, are we.
Toen kwam heel Israël tot David in Hebron en zeide: Zie, wij zijn uw vlees en bloed!
2 Moreover also, in time past even when Saul was king, thou, wast he that led out and brought in Israel, —and Yahweh thy God said unto thee, Thou, shalt shepherd my people Israel, Yea, thou, shalt be chief ruler, over my people Israel.
Reeds vroeger, toen Saul nog koning was, waart gij het, die Israël te velde deedt trekken en terugbracht. En tot u heeft Jahweh, uw God, gezegd: "Gij zult mijn volk Israël weiden; gij zult de leider van mijn volk Israël zijn!"
3 Thus came all the elders of Israel unto the king, to Hebron, and David solemnised to them a covenant in Hebron, before Yahweh, —and they anointed David to be king over Israel, according to the word of Yahweh, through Samuel.
Toen alle oudsten van Israël dus bij den koning in Hebron gekomen waren, sloot David met hen in Hebron een verbond voor het aanschijn van Jahweh, en werd David door hen tot koning over Israël gezalfd, juist zoals Jahweh door Samuël had voorspeld.
4 Then went David and all Israel to Jerusalem, the same, was Jebus, —where were the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land.
Nu trok David met heel Israël naar Jerusalem op, dat wil zeggen: Jeboes, waar de Jeboesieten woonden, de inheemse bevolking.
5 And the inhabitants of Jebus said unto David, Thou shalt not come in hither, —But David captured the citadel of Zion, the same, is the city of David.
De bewoners van Jeboes riepen tot David: Hier komt ge niet binnen! Maar David veroverde de Sionsvesting, de zogenaamde Davidstad.
6 And David said, Whosoever smiteth the Jebusites, first, shall become a chief, and a ruler, —So then Joab son of Zeruiah, went up first, and became a chief.
Bij die gelegenheid sprak David: Wie het eerst een Jeboesiet neerslaat, wordt opperste bevelhebber. En Joab was het, de zoon van Seroeja, die het eerst naar boven kroop, en bevelhebber werd.
7 And David dwelt in the citadel, —for this cause, did they call it, The City of David.
Daarna vestigde David zich in de vesting, die hij Davidstad noemde,
8 And he built the city round about, from Millo even as far as the circuit, —but, Joab, suffered the remainder of the city to live.
en hij bouwde de stad in heel haar omvang van het Millo af tot aan het paleis. De rest van de stad werd door Joab gerestaureerd.
9 Thus did David wax greater and yet greater, —and, Yahweh of Hosts, was with him.
Zo werd David hoe langer hoe machtiger, daar Jahweh der heirscharen met hem was.
10 Now, these, are the chiefs of the heroes, that pertained to David, who held strongly with him in his kingdom, with all Israel, to make him king, —according to the word of Yahweh, concerning Israel.
Hier volgen de aanvoerders van Davids helden, die zich verdienstelijk maakten voor zijn heerschappij over heel Israël, en hem hielpen koning te worden van Israël, naar het woord van Jahweh.
11 And, this, is the number of the heroes who pertained to David, —Jashobeam son of a Hachmonite, chief of the thirty, the same, brandished his spear over three hundred—slain at one time.
Hier volgt dus een op somming van Davids helden. Jasjobam, de zoon van Chakmoni, was de aanvoerder der Drie. Hij zwaaide zijn lans tegen driehonderd man, die hij in één keer versloeg.
12 And, after him, was Eleazar son of Dodai, the Ahohite, —he, was among the three heroes;
Na hem kwam Elazar, de zoon van Dodo, den Achochiet, ook een van de drie helden.
13 he, was with David in Pas-dammim, where, the Philistines, were gathered together to battle, and there was a field-plot full of barley, —and, the people, fled, from before the Philistines;
Hij bevond zich met David te Pas-Dammim, toen de Filistijnen zich daar verzameld hadden voor de strijd. Na hem kwam Sjamma, de zoon van Age uit Harari. Eens, toen de Filistijnen zich voor de strijd te Lechi verzameld hadden, waar een stuk land was, geheel met gerst beplant, was het volk voor de Filistijnen op de vlucht geslagen;
14 so they took their stand in the midst of the plot and rescued it, and smote the Philistines, —and Yahweh wrought a great victory.
maar hij ging midden op het veld staan en wist het te behouden, door de Filistijnen te verslaan. Zo verleende Jahweh hun een grote overwinning.
15 And three of the thirty chiefs went down upon the rock, unto David, into the cave of Adullam, —a host of Philistines, being encamped in the vale of Rephaim.
Een andere keer daalden drie van de dertig aanvoerders af, en kwamen bij David in de spelonk van Adoellam, terwijl een bende Filistijnen in de vallei der Refaïeten gelegerd was.
16 Now, David, then was in the stronghold, —and, a garrison of Philistines, then was in Bethlehem.
David bevond zich toen in de bergvesting, en de Filistijnen hadden Betlehem bezet.
17 And David longed, and said—Who will give me to drink of the water, out of the well of Bethlehem, that is within the gate?
Toen nu David eens het verlangen te kennen gaf, of iemand hem water te drinken kon geven uit de bron bij de poort van Betlehem,
18 And the three brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was within the gate, and bare it, and brought it in unto David, —yet would not David drink it, but poured it out unto Yahweh;
drongen de Drie door de legermacht der Filistijnen heen, putten water uit de bron bij de poort van Betlehem, namen het mee en brachten het bij David. Maar David wilde er niet van drinken, en goot het uit ter ere van Jahweh, terwijl hij uitriep:
19 and said—Far be it from me, of my God, that I should do this! The blood of these men, shall I drink, with their lives? For, with their lives, have they brought it! So he would not drink it. These things, did the three heroes.
Bij Jahweh; ik denk er niet aan, zo iets te doen. Ik zou het bloed en het leven van die drie mensen drinken; want ze hebben hun leven gewaagd, om het mij te kunnen brengen! Daarom wilde hij het niet drinken. Zulke dingen deden de drie helden.
20 And, Abishai brother of Joab—he, was the chief of three, he, having brandished his spear against three hundred—who were slain, —and so, he, had a name among three.
Absjai, de broeder van Joab, was de aanvoerder van de Dertig. Hij zwaaide zijn lans tegen driehonderd man, die hij doodde. Hij was bekend bij de Drie,
21 Of the three in the second rank, was he honourable, therefore became he their captain, —though, unto the [first] three, did he not attain.
en om twee feiten was hij beroemder dan de Dertig, zodat hij hun aanvoerder werd; maar tegen de Drie kon hij niet op.
22 Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, son of a man of valour, hero of many a deed, from Kabziel—he, smote the two [sons] of Ariel of Moab, he, also went down and smote a lion in the midst of a pit, in time of snow;
Benaja, de zoon van Jehojada, was een dapper man uit Kabseël, met een uitstekende staat van dienst. Hij versloeg de twee zonen van Ariël uit Moab. Ook doodde hij midden in een kuil een leeuw op een dag, dat er sneeuw lag.
23 he, also smote an Egyptian, a man of [great] stature, five cubits, and, in the hand of the Egyptian, was a spear like a weaver’s beam, so he went down unto him with a staff, —and wrested the spear out of the hand of the Egyptian, and slew him with his spear.
Verder versloeg hij een Egyptenaar, een man van ongewone afmetingen, vijf el lang, die met een lans als een weversboom was gewapend; hij ging met een stok op hem af, wrong hem de lans uit de vuist, en stak hem met zijn eigen lans dood.
24 These things, did Benaiah son of Jehoiada, so, he, had a name among three heroes.
Zulke dingen deed Benaja, de zoon van Jehojada! Daardoor was hij bekend bij de Drie.
25 Among the thirty, lo! honourable, was he, but, unto the [first] three, did he not attain, —howbeit David set him over his council.
Maar ofschoon hij beroemder was dan de Dertig, tegen de Drie kon hij niet op! Hem stelde David over zijn lijfwacht aan.
26 Now, the heroes of the forces, were, —Asahel, brother of Joab, Elhanan, son of Dodo, of Bethlehem;
Tenslotte de helden: Asaël, de broer van Joab; Elchanan, de zoon van Dodo uit Betlehem;
27 Shammoth, the Harorite, Helez the Paltite;
Sjammot uit Harar; Chéles uit Bet-Pélet;
28 Ira, son of Ikkesh, the Tekoite, Abiezer, the Anathothite;
Ira, de zoon van Ikkesj uit Tekóa; Abiézer uit Anatot;
29 Sibbecai, the Hushathite, Ilai, the Ahohite;
Sibbekai uit Choesja; Ilai uit Achoch;
30 Maharai, the Netophathite, Heled, son of Baanah, the Netophathite;

31 Ithai, son of Ribai, of Gibeah, of the sons of Benjamin, —Benaiah, the Pirathonite;

34 the sons of Hashem, the Gizonite, Jonathan, son of Shageh, the Hararite;

35 Ahiam, son of Sacar, the Hararite, Eliphal, son of Ur;

47 Eliel, and Obed, and Jaasiel, of Zobah.
Eliël, Obed en Jaäsiël, uit Soba.
