1 Adam, Seth, Enosh:
[The first person God created was Adam]. Adam’s [son was] Seth. [Seth’s son was] Enosh. [Enosh’s son was] Kenan.
2 Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared:
[Kenan’s son was] Mahalalel. [Mahalalel’s son was] Jared. [Jared’s son was] Enoch.
3 Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech:
[Enoch’s son was] Methuselah. [Methusalah’s son was] Lamech. [Lamech’s son was] Noah.
4 Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
[Noah’s sons were] Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
5 The sons of Japheth, Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech and Tiras.
The sons (OR, descendants) of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras.
6 And, the sons of Gomer, Ashkenaz, and Diphath, and Togarmah.
The sons (OR, descendants) of Gomer were Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah.
7 And, the sons of Javan, Elishah, and Tarshish, —Kittim, and Rodanim.
The descendants of Javan were Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Rodanim.
8 The sons of Ham, Cush, and Mizraim, Put, and Canaan.
The sons of Ham were Cush, Mizraim (OR, Egypt), Put, and Canaan.
9 And, the sons of Cush, Seba, and Havilah, and Sabta, and Raama, and Sabteca. And, the sons of Raamah, Sheba, and Dedan.
The descendants of Cush were Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The sons (OR, descendants) of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan.
10 And, Cush, begat Nimrod, —he, began to be a mighty one in the earth.
Another descendant of Cush was Nimrod. When he grew up, he became a mighty warrior on the earth.
11 And, Mizraim, begat Ludim, and Anamim, and Lehabim, and Naphtuhim,
Mizraim (OR, Egypt) was the ancestor of the Lud people-group, the Anam people-group, the Lehab people-group, the Naphtuh people-group,
12 and Pathrusim, and Casluhim—whence went forth the Philistines, and Caphtorim.
the Pathrus people-group, the Casluh people-group, and the Caphtor people-group. The people of [the] Philistia [region] were descended from the Casluh people-group.
13 And, Canaan, begat Zidon his firstborn, and Heth;
Canaan’s first son was Sidon. He was also the ancestor of the Heth people-group,
14 and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, and the Girgashite;
the Jebus people-group, the Amor people-group, the Girgash people-group,
15 and the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite;
the Hiv people-group, the Ark people-group, the Sin people-group,
16 and the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite.
the Arvad people-group, the Zemar people-group, and the Hamath people-group.
17 The sons of Shem, Elam, and Asshur, and Arpachshad, and Lud, and Aram, —and Uz, and Hul, and Gethur, and Meshech.
The sons of Shem were Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram. Aram’s sons were Uz, Hul, Gether, and Meshech.
18 And, Arpachshad, begat Shelah, —and, Shelah, begat Eber.
Arphaxad was the father of Shelah, who was the father of Eber.
19 And, unto Eber, were born two sons, —the name of the one, was Peleg, for, in his days, was the earth divided, and, the name of his brother, was Joktan.
Eber had two sons. One was named Peleg [which sounds like the word that means ‘divided’] because during the time that he lived, [the people on] the earth were divided [into various language groups]. Peleg’s [younger] brother was Joktan.
20 And, Joktan, begat Almodad, and Sheleph, —and Hazarmaveth, and Jerah;
Joktan was the ancestor of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah,
21 and Hadoram, and Uzal, and Diklah;
Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah,
22 and Ebal, and Abimael, and Sheba;
Obal, Abimael, Sheba,
23 and Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab. All these, were the sons of Joktan.
Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab.
24 Shem, Arpachshad, Shelah;
The descendants of Shem, [in order from him to Abraham], were Arphaxad, Shelah,
25 Eber, Peleg, Reu;
Eber, Peleg, Reu,
26 Serug, Nahor, Terah;
Serug, Nahor, Terah,
27 Abram—the same, is Abraham.
and Abram, whose [name was later changed to] Abraham.
28 The sons of Abraham, Isaac and Ishmael.
Abraham’s sons were Isaac and Ishmael.
29 These, are their generations, —the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebaioth, then Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam;
[The son of Abraham’s slave wife Hagar was Ishmael.] Ishmael’s [twelve] sons were Nebaioth, Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,
30 Mishma, and Dumah, Massa, Hadad, and Tema;
Mishma, Dumah, Massa, Hadad, Tema,
31 Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. These, are the sons of Ishmael.
Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.
32 And, the sons of Keturah, the concubine of Abraham, she bare Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah, —and, the sons of Jokshan, Sheba, and Dedan;
[After]’s [wife Sarah died, he took another wife named] Keturah. The sons of Abraham and Keturah were Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. Jokshan’s sons were Sheba and Dedan.
33 and, the sons of Midian, Ephah, and Epher, and Hanoch, and Abida, and Eldaah. All these, were the sons of Keturah.
Midian’s sons were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah.
34 So then Abraham begat Isaac, —the sons of Isaac, were Esau and Israel.
The son of Abraham [and his wife Sarah] was Isaac, and Isaac’s sons were Esau and [Jacob, whose name was later changed to] Israel.
35 the sons of Esau, Eliphaz, Reuel, and Jeush, and Jalam, and Korah.
The sons of Esau were Eliphaz, Reuel, Jeush, Jalam, and Korah.
36 The sons of Eliphaz, Teman, and Omar, Zephi, and Gatam, Kenaz, and Timna, and Amalek.
The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho (OR, Zephi), Gatam, Kenaz, Timna, and Amalek.
37 The sons of Reuel, Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah.
Reuel’s sons were Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah.
38 And, the sons of Seir, Lotan, and Shobal, and Zibeon, and Anah, —and Dishon, and Ezer, and Dishan.
[Another descendant of Esau was Seir. His descendants lived in the Edom region]. Seir’s sons were Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan.
39 And, the sons of Lotan, Hori, and Homam, —and, Lotan’s sister, was Timna.
Lotan’s sons were Hori and Homam, and Lotan’s sister was Timna.
40 The sons of Shobal, Alian, and Manahath, and Ebal, Shephi and Onam. And, the sons of Zibeon, Aiah and Anah.
Shobal’s sons were Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam. Zibeon’s sons were Aiah and Anah.
41 The sons of Anah, Dishon, —and, the sons of Dishon, Hamran, and Eshban, and Ithran, and Cheran.
Anah’s son was Dishon. 1 Dishon’s sons were Hemdan (OR, Hamran), Eshban, Ithran, and Keran.
42 The sons of Ezer, Bilhan, and Zaavan, Jaakan. The sons of Dishan, Uz and Aran.
Ezer’s sons were Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan (OR, Jaakan). Dishan’s sons were Uz and Aran.
43 Now, these, are the kings, who reigned in the land of Edom, before there reigned a king of the sons of Israel, —Bela the son of Beor, and, the name of his city, was Dinhabah.
[These are the names of] the kings that ruled [the] Edom [region] before any kings ruled over Israel: Bela, the son of Beor, was king in Edom, and the name of the city [in which he lived] was Dinhabah.
44 And Bela died, —and there reigned in his stead, Jobab son of Zerah, of Bozrah.
When Bela died, Jobab, the son of Zerah from Bozrah [city], became the king.
45 And Jobab died, —and there reigned in his stead, Husham, of the land of the Temanites.
When Jobab died, Husham became the king. He was from the region where the Teman people-group lived.
46 And Husham died, —and there reigned in his stead, Hadad the son of Bedad, who smote Midian in the field of Moab, and, the name of his city, was Avith.
When Husham died, Hadad, the son of Bedad, became the king. He [ruled in] Avith city. Hadad’s [army] defeated [the army of the] Midian [people-group] in [the] Moab [region].
47 And Hadad died, —and there reigned in his stead, Samlah of Masrekah.
When Hadad died, Samlah became the king. He was from Masrekah [town].
48 And Samlah died, —and there reigned in his stead, Shaul, of Rehoboth by the River.
When Samlah died, Shaul became the king. He was from Rehoboth [city] along the [Euphrates] river.
49 And Shaul died, —and there reigned in his stead, Baal-hanan, the son of Achbor.
When Shaul died, Baal-Hanan, the son of Achbor, became the king.
50 And Baal-hanan died, —and there reigned in his stead, Hadad, and, the name of his city, was Pai, —and, the name of his wife, was Mehetabel, daughter of Matred, daughter of Mezahab.
When Baal-Hanan died, Hadad became the king. He was from Pau city. His wife’s name was Mehetabel; she was the daughter of Matred and the granddaughter of Me-Zahab.
51 And Hadad died. And there were chiefs of Edom: chief Timna, chief Aliah, chief Jetheth;
Then Hadad died. The leaders of the clans of the Edom people-group were Timna, Alvah, Jetheth,
52 chief Oholibamah, chief Elah, chief Pinon;
Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon,
53 chief Kenaz, chief Teman, chief Mibzar;
Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar,
54 chief Magdiel, chief Iram. These, were the chiefs of Edom.
Magdiel, and Iram.
