Psalms 44
1 For the Chief Musician; [a Psalm] of the sons of Korah. Maschil. We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the days of old.
Au chef des chantres. Par les fils de Coré. Maskîl. O Dieu! De nos oreilles nous l’avons entendue, nos pères nous l’ont racontée, l’œuvre que tu as accomplie de leurs jours, aux temps antiques.
2 Thou didst drive out the nations with thy hand, and plantedst them in; thou didst afflict the peoples, and didst spread them abroad.
Toi, de ta main, tu as dépossédé des nations, et tu les as implantés, eux; tu as ruiné des peuplades, et eux, tu les as multipliés.
3 For they gat not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.
Certes, ce n’est pas leur épée qui les a faits maîtres du pays, ni leur bras qui leur a donné la victoire: c’est ta droite, ton bras, la lumière de ta face; car tu les avais pris en affection.
4 Thou art my King, O God: command deliverance for Jacob.
C’Est toi qui es mon roi, ô Dieu! Décrète les triomphes de Jacob.
5 Through thee will we push down our adversaries: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.
Grâce à toi nous enfonçons nos ennemis, avec l’aide de ton nom, nous écrasons nos agresseurs.
6 For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.
Car je ne mets pas ma confiance en mon arc; ce n’est pas mon épée qui m’assure la victoire;
7 But thou hast saved us from our adversaries, and hast put them to shame that hate us.
mais c’est toi qui nous fait triompher de nos ennemis, qui couvres de confusion ceux qui nous haïssent.
8 In God have we made our boast all the day long, and we will give thanks unto thy name for ever. (Selah)
En Dieu nous nous glorifions sans cesse, et à jamais nous célébrons ton nom. (Sélah)
9 But now thou hast cast [us] off, and brought us to dishonour; and goest not forth with our hosts.
Pourtant tu nous as rejetés et humiliés, et tu n’accompagnes plus nos armées.
10 Thou makest us to turn back from the adversary: and they which hate us spoil for themselves.
Tu nous fais reculer devant l’ennemi: ceux qui nous haïssent pillent à leur aise.
11 Thou hast given us like sheep [appointed] for meat; and hast scattered us among the nations.
Tu nous livres comme des troupeaux dont on se nourrit, et nous éparpilles parmi les nations.
12 Thou sellest thy people for nought, and hast not increased [thy wealth] by their price.
Tu vends ton peuple à vil prix; tu n’estimes pas bien haut sa valeur.
13 Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us.
Tu fais de nous un objet d’opprobre pour nos voisins, la risée et la moquerie de notre entourage.
14 Thou makest us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.
Tu nous rends la fable des nations; nous excitons des hochements de tête parmi les peuples.
15 All the day long is my dishonour before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,
Tout le temps, mon déshonneur est là, sous mes yeux, et mon visage se couvre de honte
16 For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and the avenger.
à la voix de l’insulteur et du détracteur, à la vue de l’ennemi, avide de vengeance.
17 All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.
Tout cela nous est advenu, sans que nous t’ayons oublié, sans que nous ayons trahi ton alliance.
18 Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way;
Notre cœur n’a pas rétrogradé, ni nos pas n’ont dévié de ton chemin,
19 That thou hast sore broken us in the place of jackals, and covered us with the shadow of death.
pour que tu dusses nous reléguer dans la région des monstres et nous recouvrir des ombres de la mort.
20 If we have forgotten the name of our God, or spread forth our hands to a strange god;
Si nous avions oublié le nom de notre Dieu, étendu les mains vers un dieu étranger,
21 Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.
est-ce que Dieu ne l’aurait pas constaté, puisqu’il connaît les secrets du cœur?
22 Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.
Mais pour toi nous subissons chaque jour la mort; on nous considère comme des brebis destinées à la boucherie.
23 Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast [us] not off for ever.
Réveille-toi donc! Pourquoi demeures-tu endormi, Seigneur? Sors de ton sommeil, ne nous délaisse pas à jamais.
24 Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression?
Pourquoi dérobes-tu ta face, oublies-tu notre misère et notre oppression?
25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth.
Car notre âme est abaissée jusque dans la poussière, notre corps est couché de son long sur le sol.
26 Rise up for our help, and redeem us for thy lovingkindness’ sake.
Lève-toi pour nous venir en aide, délivre-nous par un effet de ta bonté!
