Proverbs 26
1 As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not seemly for a fool.
Assim como a neve no verão, como a chuva na colheita, assim também não convém a honra para o tolo.
2 As the sparrow in her wandering, as the swallow in her flying, so the curse that is causeless lighteth not.
Como um pássaro a vaguear, como a andorinha a voar, assim também a maldição não virá sem causa.
3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the back of fools.
Açoite para o cavalo, cabresto para o asno; e vara para as costas dos tolos.
4 Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.
Não respondas ao tolo conforme sua loucura; para que não te faças semelhante a ele.
5 Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.
Responde ao tolo conforme sua loucura, para que ele não seja sábio aos seus próprios olhos.
6 He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool cutteth off [his own] feet, [and] drinketh in damage.
Quem manda mensagens pelas mãos do tolo é como quem corta os pés e bebe violência.
7 The legs of the lame hang loose: so is a parable in the mouth of fools.
[Assim] como não funcionam as pernas do aleijado, assim também é o provérbio na boca dos tolos.
8 As a bag of gems in a heap of stones, so is he that giveth honour to a fool.
Dar honra ao tolo é como amarrar uma pedra numa funda.
9 [As] a thorn that goeth up into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the month of fools.
Como espinho na mão do bêbado, assim é o provérbio na boca dos tolos.
10 [As] an archer that woundeth all, so is he that hireth the fool and he that hireth them that pass by.
[Como] um flecheiro que atira para todo lado, [assim] é aquele que contrata um tolo [ou] que contrata alguém que vai passando.
11 As a dog that returneth to his vomit, [so is] a fool that repeateth his folly.
Como um cão que volta a seu vômito, [assim] é o tolo que repete sua loucura.
12 Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.
Viste algum homem sábio aos seus próprios olhos? Mais esperança há para o tolo do que para ele.
13 The sluggard saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets.
O preguiçoso diz: Há uma fera no caminho; há um leão nas ruas.
14 [As] the door turneth upon its hinges, so doth the sluggard upon his bed.
[Como] a porta se vira em torno de suas dobradiças, [assim] o preguiçoso [se vira] em sua cama.
15 The sluggard burieth his hand in the dish; it wearieth him to bring it again to his mouth.
O preguiçoso põe sua mão no prato, e acha cansativo demais trazê-la de volta a sua boca.
16 The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason.
O preguiçoso se acha mais sábio aos próprios olhos do que sete que respondem com prudência.
17 He that passeth by, [and] vexeth himself with strife belonging not to him, is [like] one that taketh a dog by the ears.
Aquele que, enquanto está passando, [se envolve] em briga que não é sua, é [como] o que pega um cão pelas orelhas.
18 As a madman who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death;
Como o louco que lança faíscas, flechas e coisas mortíferas,
19 So is the man that deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Am not I in sport?
Assim é o homem que engana a seu próximo, e diz: Não estava eu [só] brincando?
20 For lack of wood the fire goeth out: and where there is no whisperer, contention ceaseth.
Sem lenha, o fogo se apaga; e sem fofoqueiro, a briga termina.
21 [As] coals are to hot embers, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to inflame strife.
O carvão é para as brasas, e a lenha para o fogo; e o homem difamador para acender brigas.
22 The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.
As palavras do fofoqueiro são como alimentos deliciosos, que descem ao interior do ventre.
23 Fervent lips and a wicked heart are [like] an earthen vessel overlaid with silver dross.
Como um vaso de fundição coberto de restos de prata, [assim] são os lábios inflamados e o coração maligno.
24 He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, but he layeth up deceit within him:
Aquele que odeia dissimula em seus lábios, mas seu interior abriga o engano;
25 When he speaketh fair, believe him not; for there are seven abominations in his heart:
Quando ele [te] falar agradavelmente com sua voz, não acredites nele; porque há sete abominações em seu coração;
26 Though [his] hatred cover itself with guile, his wickedness shall be openly shewed before the congregation.
Cujo ódio está encoberto pelo engano; sua maldade será descoberta na congregação.
27 Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it shall return upon him.
Quem cava uma cova, nela cairá; e quem rola uma pedra, esta voltará sobre ele.
28 A lying tongue hateth those whom it hath wounded; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.
A língua falsa odeia aos que ela atormenta; e a boca lisonjeira opera ruína.
