Proverbs 20
1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler; and whosoever erreth thereby is not wise.
El vino es mofador, el licor alborotador; nunca será sabio el que a ellos se entrega.
2 The terror of a king is as the roaring of a lion: he that provoketh him to anger sinneth [against] his own life.
Semejante al rugido de león es el furor del rey; quien provoca su ira peca contra sí mismo.
3 It is an honour for a man to keep aloof from strife: but every fool will be quarrelling.
Es honor del hombre abstenerse de altercados; todos los necios se meten en pendencias.
4 The slothful will not plow by reason of the winter; therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.
A causa del frío no ara el perezoso, por eso mendigará en vano en la siega.
5 Counsel in the heart of man is [like] deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.
Aguas profundas son los pensamientos del corazón humano, mas el sabio sabe sacarlos.
6 Most men wilt proclaim every one his own kindness: but a faithful man who can find?
Muchos se jactan de su bondad, pero un hombre fiel, ¿quién lo hallará?
7 A just man that walketh in his integrity, blessed are his children after him.
El justo procede sin tacha, bienaventurados sus hijos después de él.
8 A king that sitteth on the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.
El rey, sentado como juez en el trono, con su sola mirada ahuyenta todo lo malo.
9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?
¿Quién podrá decir: “He purificado mi corazón, limpio estoy de mi pecado”?
10 Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them alike are an abomination to the LORD.
Peso falso y falsa medida son dos cosas abominables ante Yahvé.
11 Even a child maketh himself known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.
Ya el niño muestra por sus acciones si su conducta ha de ser pura y recta.
12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.
El oído que oye, y el ojo que ve, ambas son obras de Yahvé.
13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, [and] thou shalt be satisfied with bread.
Huye el sueño, para que no empobrezcas; abre tus ojos, y te saciarás de pan.
14 It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.
“Malo, malo”, dice el comprador, pero después de haber comprado se gloría.
15 There is gold, and abundance of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.
Hay oro y perlas en abundancia, mas la alhaja más preciosa son los labios instruidos.
16 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger; and hold him in pledge [that is surety] for strangers.
Tómate el vestido del que salió fiador por un extraño, y exígele una prenda por lo que debe al extranjero.
17 Bread of falsehood is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
El pan injustamente adquirido le gusta al hombre, pero después se llena su boca de guijos.
18 Every purpose is established by counsel: and by wise guidance make thou war,
Los consejos aseguran el éxito de los proyectos; no hagas la guerra sin previa deliberación.
19 He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that openeth wide his lips.
No tengas trato con el que revela secretos y es chismoso, ni con aquel cuyos labios siempre se abren.
20 Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in the blackest darkness.
Si uno maldice a su padre y a su madre, su antorcha se apagará en densas tinieblas.
21 An inheritance [may be] gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.
Lo que uno comenzó a adquirir apresuradamente, no tiene fin venturoso.
22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil: wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.
No digas: “Yo devolveré el mal”; espera en Yahvé, y Él te salvará.
23 Divers weights are an abomination to the LORD; and a false balance is not good.
Yahvé abomina las pesas falsas, y falsa balanza es cosa mala.
24 A man’s goings are of the LORD; how then can man understand his way?
Es Yahvé quien dirige los pasos del hombre; ¿qué sabe el hombre de su destino?
25 It is a snare to a man rashly to say, [It is] holy, and after vows to make inquiry.
Es un lazo para el hombre decir a la ligera: “Consagrado”, sin meditar antes de hacer el voto.
26 A wise king winnoweth the wicked, and bringeth the [threshing] wheel over them.
El rey sabio avienta a los malhechores, y hace pasar sobre ellos la rueda.
27 The spirit of man is the lamp of the LORD, searching all the innermost parts of the belly.
Antorcha de Yahvé es el espíritu del hombre, escudriña todos los secretos del corazón.
28 Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.
Bondad y fidelidad guardan al rey, y la clemencia le afirma el trono.
29 The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the hoary head.
Los jóvenes se glorían de su fuerza, el adorno de los ancianos son las canas.
30 Stripes that wound cleanse away evil: and strokes [reach] the innermost parts of the belly.
Los azotes que hieren son medicina contra el mal, como las llagas que penetran hasta el interior del cuerpo.
